Chapter 12: Blood Doesn't Lie

Chapter 12: Blood Doesn't Lie
The words "Your mother gave birth... to twins." echoed in Emily's mind long after everyone had left the bank.
She stood motionless before the frozen security footage.
The woman on the screen looked almost exactly like her.
The same dark eyes.
The same delicate features.
The same small birthmark near the left ear.
Only one difference stood out.
While Emily's face reflected kindness and uncertainty, the woman in the video carried an expression of quiet determination—almost as if she had spent her entire life preparing for this moment.
Daniel gently touched Emily's shoulder.
"We're going to find her."
Emily nodded, but her thoughts were elsewhere.
If she had a twin sister...
Why had they been separated?
Why had Sarah Carter hidden such a life-changing truth?
And most importantly...
Who had raised Elizabeth?
Ashford Manor – Later That Afternoon
Detective Michael Hayes transformed the library into a temporary investigation room.
The bank footage played repeatedly on a large monitor while officers compared old photographs of Sarah Carter with hospital records recovered from Eleanor Brooks.
Richard Collins stood by the fireplace, visibly shaken.
"I should have told you years ago."
Daniel looked at him.
"Tell us everything now."
Richard took a deep breath.
"The night Sarah gave birth wasn't supposed to become a secret."
"What changed?"
"Victor Hale."
The name immediately drew everyone's attention.
Richard continued.
"He arrived at the hospital before sunrise."
"He demanded that William give up any legal claim to the children."
Emily frowned.
"Why?"
"Because William's father—the chairman of Ashford Industries—had just suffered a stroke."
Richard paused.
"The board feared a scandal."
"They believed that if William acknowledged two daughters born outside his marriage..."
"...the company would collapse."
Hayes crossed his arms.
"So Victor wanted to protect the corporation."
Richard slowly shook his head.
"No."
"He wanted control."
A Forgotten Medical File
Eleanor Brooks quietly opened another envelope she had brought from her cottage.
"I hoped this would never be necessary."
Inside were original maternity records from St. Mary's Hospital.
The delivery notes confirmed what Richard had said.
Two healthy female infants.
Born twelve minutes apart.
Baby A.
Baby B.
The names had never been written.
Instead, each infant had been identified by a tiny inked footprint.
Emily stared at the page.
"My mother kept this hidden..."
Eleanor nodded.
"Sarah believed that if the records disappeared..."
"...no one could use them to find you."
Detective Hayes examined the documents carefully.
"There should be DNA samples preserved in the hospital archive."
Daniel looked up.
"If any remain after twenty-one years."
Hayes nodded.
"It's worth trying."
The DNA Test
Two days later, the laboratory processed emergency genetic testing using preserved hospital blood samples, Emily's DNA, and an old shaving brush recovered from William Ashford's private bathroom.
The waiting felt endless.
Emily sat in silence while Daniel paced the corridor outside the forensic laboratory.
Margaret prayed quietly.
Richard stared through the window without speaking.
Finally, Dr. Olivia Grant emerged carrying a sealed report.
She looked at Detective Hayes.
"The results are conclusive."
Hayes accepted the envelope.
No one breathed.
He opened the report.
His eyes scanned the final page.
Then he slowly looked toward Emily.
"There is a 99.999% probability..."
He paused.
"...that William Ashford was your biological father."
Emily closed her eyes.
A single tear rolled down her cheek.
Not because she was surprised.
Because she no longer had to wonder.
For the first time in her life...
She knew who she was.
Daniel walked toward her without saying a word.
He embraced her gently.
"Welcome home."
Emily cried quietly against his shoulder.
But There Was More...
Hayes turned another page.
"The laboratory also compared the preserved newborn blood samples."
Emily looked up.
"And?"
Dr. Grant smiled gently.
"The second infant is your full biological sibling."
"So it really is true."
Hayes nodded.
"You and Elizabeth are identical twins."
Margaret covered her mouth.
"My God..."
Mrs. Harris began crying openly.
Richard whispered,
"William never stopped searching."
The Hidden Bracelet
Later that evening, Emily returned to the attic chest where she had first found Sarah's letter.
This time, she searched more carefully.
She lifted every blanket.
Every toy.
Every faded piece of clothing.
At the very bottom, tucked inside a small velvet pouch, she found a silver baby bracelet.
Tiny.
Delicate.
Engraved with one name.
Elizabeth
Emily held it carefully.
Beneath the bracelet lay another folded note in Sarah's handwriting.
If one daughter finds this before the other, remember something important.
You were never separated because you were unwanted.
You were separated because someone believed they could only control one child if they lost the other.
Never blame your sister.
She is as much a victim as you are.
Find her before those who fear the truth do.
Emily folded the letter with trembling hands.
"No matter where you are..."
She whispered into the empty attic.
"...I'll find you."
A Dangerous Discovery
Meanwhile, Detective Hayes received the forensic analysis of the burner phone recovered from Vanessa's safe.
Although most messages had been deleted, technicians restored fragments of several conversations.
One message stood out.
Target confirmed.
Not Emily.
The other one.
Hayes frowned.
Another recovered message appeared beneath it.
Blood doesn't lie.
The rightful heir must never reach Ashford Manor alive.
Hayes immediately called Daniel.
"I think we've misunderstood everything."
Daniel answered instantly.
"What happened?"
"The attacks weren't meant to stop Emily."
"What?"
"The messages suggest Emily was never the primary target."
Daniel's face turned pale.
"You mean..."
"Elizabeth."
Hayes nodded.
"Someone has been hunting your sister for years."
Elsewhere...
In an isolated mountain cabin, miles away from Ashford Manor, a woman stood before a fireplace, staring into the flames.
She looked almost identical to Emily.
She wore dark clothing.
A silver pendant rested around her neck.
On the table beside her lay an old newspaper.
The headline read:
HOUSEKEEPER CLEARED IN ASHFORD NECKLACE SCANDAL
She traced Emily's photograph with her fingertips.
"So..."
She whispered.
"You survived."
A knock came at the cabin door.
The mysterious man known only as The Guardian entered without waiting for permission.
"It's time."
Elizabeth looked up.
"To do what?"
He placed a leather folder on the table.
Inside were copies of William Ashford's hidden will, financial records, and photographs from twenty-one years ago.
"You've spent your whole life believing one story."
He smiled faintly.
"Now you're ready to hear another."
Elizabeth slowly opened the folder.
As she read the first page, her expression hardened.
"If this is true..."
The Guardian nodded.
"It is."
She looked directly into his eyes.
"Then Emily has everything that should have been mine."
The Guardian said nothing.
He didn't need to.
The seed of doubt had already been planted.
Outside, snow began to fall across the lonely mountains.
Far away, Emily looked up at the same night sky, unaware that her sister was alive.
Unaware that forces far greater than inheritance were pulling them toward an inevitable reunion.
A reunion that would decide not only the future of Ashford Industries...
May you like
...but the fate of the entire Ashford family.
