Chapter 16: The Fire in the East Wing

Chapter 16: The Fire in the East Wing
A bitter wind swept across Ashford Manor before sunrise.
The ancient estate stood silent beneath a blanket of mist, its towering stone walls hiding secrets that had survived for more than two decades. Yet inside, every member of the Ashford household sensed that something had changed.
Vanessa was dead.
Elizabeth was on her way to the manor.
And somewhere in the shadows, the man known only as The Guardian had set his final plan into motion.
No one knew how little time remained.
A Warning Before Dawn
Emily awoke to the sound of someone knocking urgently on her bedroom door.
She glanced at the clock.
4:17 a.m.
She wrapped a robe around her shoulders and opened the door.
Daniel stood outside, his face pale.
"You need to come with me."
"What happened?"
"We found something."
Minutes later, Emily followed Daniel into the library, where Detective Hayes and Richard Collins were studying a large blueprint spread across the table.
Hayes looked up.
"The fire in the East Wing twenty-one years ago..."
Emily immediately remembered the story.
"The one my mother barely escaped?"
Hayes nodded.
"We've been looking at it the wrong way."
Richard pointed to the blueprint.
"This wasn't simply an arson attack."
He traced a red line across the old floor plan.
"It was an escape route."
Emily frowned.
"For whom?"
Richard's answer came quietly.
"For the twins."
The Hidden Passage
The blueprint revealed a network of forgotten service tunnels beneath Ashford Manor.
Most had been sealed decades earlier.
One, however, connected the East Wing to the abandoned glass house behind the greenhouse.
Daniel stared at the map.
"I grew up here."
"I never knew these tunnels existed."
Richard smiled sadly.
"Only your father, Victor Hale..."
He corrected himself.
"...and a handful of trusted servants knew."
Hayes tapped one section.
"The tunnel begins behind the fireplace in the old nursery."
Emily looked surprised.
"The nursery still exists."
Daniel nodded.
"No one has used it since..."
He stopped.
Since the night Sarah disappeared.
Beneath the Nursery
The old nursery smelled of dust and cedar.
Tiny wooden horses still stood on the shelves.
A faded rocking chair faced the fireplace.
Emily gently ran her fingers across the carved initials in the mantel.
W + S
William and Sarah.
Daniel knelt before the fireplace and pressed against one of the carved stones.
Nothing.
Richard stepped forward.
"Not there."
He reached higher and twisted a small brass candle holder.
A deep mechanical click echoed through the room.
The fireplace slowly shifted sideways.
A narrow stone staircase appeared behind it.
Cold air drifted upward.
Hayes switched on his flashlight.
"No one's been down here in years."
Richard quietly replied,
"I hope you're right."
The Tunnel
The passage was barely wide enough for two people.
Moisture dripped from the ceiling.
Old electric cables hung loosely along the walls.
Emily noticed children's drawings scratched into the stone with charcoal.
Tiny stick figures.
Two little girls holding hands.
Above them, someone had written one word.
Together
Emily swallowed hard.
"Did Sarah draw these?"
Mrs. Harris, who had joined the group, nodded slowly.
"No."
"She said you did."
Emily stared at her.
"I was only a baby."
Mrs. Harris smiled sadly.
"Not these."
She pointed farther down the wall.
"The drawings were made years later."
Everyone fell silent.
Hayes frowned.
"That's impossible."
Mrs. Harris whispered,
"Unless one of the twins came back."
Smoke
The group continued deeper into the tunnel.
Suddenly Daniel stopped.
"Do you smell that?"
Emily nodded.
Smoke.
Hayes looked ahead.
A faint orange glow flickered in the darkness.
Richard's face drained of color.
"No..."
They hurried forward.
The tunnel opened into a circular chamber beneath the East Wing.
Flames licked across the old wooden supports.
Fresh gasoline covered the floor.
Someone had set another fire.
"Get back!" Hayes shouted.
The ceiling groaned above them.
A heavy timber crashed to the ground, cutting off their path to the staircase.
Emily coughed as thick smoke filled the chamber.
Daniel grabbed her hand.
"This way!"
Richard pointed toward another narrow passage.
"It leads outside!"
They ran as burning beams collapsed behind them.
The Trap
The secondary passage ended at a heavy iron door.
Daniel pulled the handle.
It wouldn't move.
"It's locked!"
Hayes examined the hinges.
"They've been welded shut."
Emily looked around desperately.
"This wasn't an accident."
Richard nodded grimly.
"They wanted us trapped."
Smoke grew thicker.
Mrs. Harris collapsed to one knee, struggling to breathe.
Daniel helped her stand.
"We're getting out."
Hayes radioed for help.
Only static answered.
The stone walls blocked the signal.
They were alone.
Elizabeth Arrives
At that same moment, a black SUV stopped outside the front gates of Ashford Manor.
Elizabeth stepped out.
She had driven through the night after leaving the mountain cabin.
The estate looked exactly like the photographs she had studied as a child.
Beautiful.
Peaceful.
Nothing like the prison she had imagined.
As she approached the entrance, she noticed smoke rising from the eastern side of the mansion.
Then she heard shouting.
Fire engines raced toward the estate.
Elizabeth frowned.
"What happened?"
A terrified gardener ran past.
"The East Wing!"
"It's burning!"
Without another thought, Elizabeth ran toward the smoke.
A Sister's Instinct
Inside the tunnel, the heat became unbearable.
Daniel wrapped his jacket around Emily's shoulders.
"You have to stay low."
Emily nodded, coughing violently.
Suddenly...
A metallic clang echoed through the chamber.
Everyone turned.
The iron door shook once.
Twice.
Then burst open from the outside.
Fresh air rushed inside.
A silhouette appeared through the smoke.
A young woman.
Dark hair.
Gray coat.
Determined eyes.
She shouted,
"This way!"
Emily froze.
The voice...
It sounded strangely familiar.
Daniel looked between the two women in disbelief.
The resemblance was undeniable.
Elizabeth stared directly at Emily for the first time.
For several endless seconds...
Neither sister moved.
It was like looking into a mirror.
Emily whispered,
"Elizabeth?"
The stranger's eyes filled with emotion.
"You know my name."
Emily nodded through tears.
"I've been looking for you."
Another beam crashed behind them.
Elizabeth snapped back to reality.
"We have to move!"
She grabbed Emily's hand.
The contact sent a strange feeling through both of them.
Neither could explain it.
But both felt it.
An invisible bond that had survived twenty-one years of separation.
Together, they helped Margaret and Mrs. Harris through the opening while Daniel and Hayes supported Richard.
Just as the last person escaped...
The tunnel collapsed behind them with a deafening roar.
The secret passage was gone forever.
Ashes
Firefighters battled the blaze for nearly two hours.
Fortunately, the flames remained contained beneath the East Wing.
The mansion itself survived.
But the underground tunnels had been completely destroyed.
Detective Hayes stood beside the smoking ruins.
"This was deliberate."
Daniel nodded.
"They were destroying evidence."
"No."
A calm voice answered behind him.
Everyone turned.
Elizabeth stood beside Emily.
Smoke covered both sisters' faces.
Their identical features stunned the firefighters and police officers alike.
Elizabeth looked toward the ruins.
"They weren't destroying evidence."
She met Hayes's eyes.
"They were trying to bury us alive."
Silence fell over the crowd.
Then Emily reached for her sister's hand.
Elizabeth hesitated only a moment before taking it.
For the first time since the night they were born...
The Carter twins stood side by side.
But before anyone could celebrate, a firefighter approached Hayes carrying a half-burned metal box recovered from the collapsed tunnel.
"We found this in the deepest chamber."
Hayes carefully opened it.
Inside lay a charred leather folder.
One page had survived.
Across the top, in William Ashford's unmistakable handwriting, were the words:
"If both of my daughters stand together, no one can steal what belongs to them."
Below the sentence, however, the rest of the page had burned away.
The most important secret remained hidden.
Far away, inside an abandoned chapel overlooking the valley, The Guardian watched live news footage of the East Wing fire.
When he saw Emily and Elizabeth standing together, his expression darkened.
"So..."
he murmured.
"They've finally met."
He calmly closed his laptop.
Reached into a locked case.
And removed an old revolver that had belonged to Victor Hale.
"The game is over."
he whispered.
May you like
"Now the war begins."
