Chapter 11 — The Empire Falls

Chapter 11 — The Empire Falls
Charlotte did not scream.
She did not cry.
She simply stared at Adrian.
"Say it again."
Adrian looked at her.
"Your mother is alive."
The words seemed impossible.
Charlotte turned toward Edward.
He couldn't look at her.
"Father?"
Edward's face was pale.
"Charlotte..."
"Tell me he's lying."
Edward remained silent.
Charlotte's voice rose.
"Tell me!"
Edward finally looked at her.
"He isn't."
Something inside Charlotte broke.
She stepped backward.
Her hand found the edge of the table.
"No."
Edward whispered:
"I'm sorry."
"You knew?"
"Yes."
"For how long?"
"Twenty-two years."
Charlotte's eyes filled with tears.
"You let me believe she was dead."
"Because she wanted you to."
"You watched me mourn her."
"I watched you survive."
"You watched me visit her grave."
Edward closed his eyes.
"Every year."
Charlotte stared at him.
"Why?"
"Because if you knew she was alive, you would have searched for her."
"And that would have been dangerous?"
"Not just dangerous."
Edward looked toward Adrian.
"It would have killed you."
Charlotte laughed bitterly.
"So everyone lied to protect me."
"No," Adrian said.
"They lied because your mother ordered them to."
Charlotte turned toward him.
"And you?"
Adrian didn't answer.
"Did you lie too?"
"Yes."
"Then why should I trust anything you say?"
"You shouldn't."
That answer stopped her.
Adrian stepped closer.
"You shouldn't trust anyone."
He looked at Edward.
"Especially now."
Charlotte's eyes moved between them.
"What does that mean?"
Adrian pointed toward the documents.
"Tomorrow is your thirtieth birthday."
Charlotte already knew.
"The succession trust activates at midnight."
Edward nodded.
"When that happens, every dormant asset controlled by the Meridian Circle will legally move under your name."
Charlotte stared.
"And that's why everyone is fighting."
"Yes."
"Richard."
"Yes."
"Marcus."
"Yes."
"William."
"Yes."
"Alexander."
Adrian hesitated.
"Perhaps."
Charlotte noticed.
"Perhaps?"
"Alexander has been missing for years."
"But he's alive."
"We don't know."
"You said my mother is alive."
"That is different."
Charlotte looked at Edward.
"Where is she?"
Edward's expression became haunted.
"I don't know."
"You've been protecting her for twenty-two years."
"Yes."
"And you don't know where she is?"
"Not anymore."
Charlotte stepped closer.
"Then what good were you?"
Edward flinched.
She immediately regretted the words.
But she didn't apologize.
She couldn't.
Not yet.
At 3:15 a.m., Solmere's stock collapsed.
The first alert appeared on every financial network.
SOLMERE EMPIRE SHARES PLUNGE 38% AFTER LEAKED FRAUD INVESTIGATION.
Then another.
MAJOR BANKS FREEZE SOLMERE CREDIT LINES.
Then another.
INTERNATIONAL PARTNERS SUSPEND CONTRACTS.
Charlotte watched the reports from a secure room beneath the Harrington estate.
Her empire was falling.
Not slowly.
Not naturally.
It was being destroyed in real time.
Ethan's betrayal had left a hole in the security system.
Richard had disappeared.
Marcus had vanished.
The board was fractured.
The banks were pulling out.
And someone was leaking information to the press faster than Charlotte could respond.
Victoria entered the room.
"Charlotte."
Charlotte looked up.
"What?"
"Three more banks have frozen our accounts."
"How much?"
"Almost twelve billion."
Charlotte closed her eyes.
"That's impossible."
"Apparently not."
Edward stood nearby.
"This is coordinated."
Charlotte looked at him.
"By the Circle?"
"Yes."
Adrian shook his head.
"Not exactly."
Charlotte turned.
"Then who?"
Adrian placed a tablet on the table.
"The market collapse began eleven minutes before the first news report."
Charlotte frowned.
"So?"
"Someone knew what was going to happen."
"Insider trading."
"Worse."
He zoomed in.
"The trades came from accounts owned by Solmere."
Charlotte stared.
"Someone inside the company sold us."
"Yes."
"Who?"
Adrian shook his head.
"We don't know."
Charlotte looked at Victoria.
"Where is the board?"
"Emergency meeting at the hotel."
Charlotte stood.
"Then let's go."
Edward grabbed her arm.
"No."
Charlotte looked at him.
"I can't let them destroy my company."
"That's exactly what they want."
"Then they should have thought twice."
Adrian stepped forward.
"Charlotte, this isn't about the company anymore."
She stared at him.
"What is it about?"
"Control."
He pointed toward the tablet.
"Whoever controls Solmere at midnight controls the trust."
Charlotte understood.
"They want me removed before the succession."
"Yes."
"How?"
"By declaring you mentally unfit."
Charlotte laughed.
"They can't do that."
Adrian looked at her.
"They already have."
At 5:40 a.m., the emergency board meeting began.
Charlotte entered the room.
Every board member was already seated.
Richard's chair was empty.
Marcus's chair was empty.
William's chair was empty.
But Arthur was there.
So were twelve other directors.
The room was silent.
Arthur stood.
"Charlotte."
She walked to the head of the table.
"Let's make this quick."
Arthur looked uncomfortable.
"There's a serious issue."
"I know."
"The board has received evidence that you've been acting erratically."
Charlotte smiled.
"Erratically?"
"You disappeared."
"I was kidnapped."
"You attacked a board member."
"He attacked me first."
"You accused senior executives of conspiracy."
"They were conspiring."
Arthur looked at the other directors.
"This is exactly what I'm talking about."
Charlotte sat.
"Continue."
Arthur opened a folder.
"Several board members believe you are no longer capable of managing Solmere."
Charlotte stared at him.
"Who?"
He hesitated.
"All of us."
The doors opened.
A lawyer entered.
He carried a black briefcase.
Charlotte recognized him.
The same attorney who had represented her family for years.
He placed documents on the table.
"The board has voted to suspend Charlotte Vale's executive authority pending a psychological evaluation."
Charlotte looked at the papers.
Then laughed.
"You forged this."
The lawyer shook his head.
"No."
"Yes."
"Ms. Vale..."
"You forged my mother's signature."
The room went silent.
Charlotte lifted one page.
"This is Evelyn's signature."
She looked at the lawyer.
"But she never signed it."
Arthur frowned.
"How would you know?"
"Because I watched her sign hundreds of documents."
Charlotte placed the page down.
"Her signature was always slightly tilted."
She pointed.
"This isn't."
The lawyer's face changed.
Charlotte smiled.
"Try again."
Then the doors opened.
Everyone turned.
Richard Vale walked in.
The room froze.
Charlotte stared at him.
"You."
Richard adjusted his tie.
"I believe I'm still a shareholder."
"You've been missing."
"I was unavailable."
"You were at the gala."
Richard smiled.
"Briefly."
Charlotte stood.
"You've been working with the Circle."
Richard laughed.
"Charlotte."
He walked toward the table.
"You're making accusations you can't prove."
"I don't need to prove them to you."
Richard looked at the board.
"She has become unstable."
Charlotte stared at him.
Richard continued.
"Her mother died."
"Her father disappeared."
"She was kidnapped."
"She claims conspiracies everywhere."
He shook his head.
"She's clearly under enormous psychological stress."
Charlotte understood.
The trap.
They weren't trying to kill her.
They were trying to make everyone believe she was insane.
She looked around the room.
Several directors avoided her eyes.
Then Richard placed a document on the table.
"Fortunately, there's a solution."
Charlotte stared.
"What?"
"The emergency succession clause."
The lawyer opened the document.
"If Charlotte Vale is deemed incapable of managing the Solmere Empire..."
Richard smiled.
"...control passes to the temporary trustee."
Charlotte's eyes narrowed.
"Who?"
The lawyer looked up.
"Richard Vale."
Silence.
Charlotte laughed.
"You planned this."
Richard's expression became cold.
"For years."
Charlotte stood.
"You think this ends with a board vote?"
Richard smiled.
"No."
He looked toward the screens.
"Because the banks have already decided."
The screens turned on.
News reports flooded the room.
SOLMERE EMPIRE FACES COLLAPSE
VALE HEIR QUESTIONED OVER FINANCIAL CRISIS
BOARD CONSIDERS REMOVING CHARLOTTE VALE
Charlotte stared.
Richard whispered:
"Your empire is falling."
Charlotte looked at him.
"No."
She smiled.
"It's being pushed."
Richard's expression changed.
Charlotte turned toward the directors.
"And I know who is pushing it."
She walked to the main screen.
"Every transaction that caused the collapse came from one source."
She displayed the records.
The room became silent.
"Solmere's internal treasury."
Arthur stood.
"What?"
Charlotte pointed.
"Someone has been moving billions through shell companies."
Another document appeared.
The names of those companies.
Charlotte looked at Richard.
"Your companies."
Richard's face went pale.
"You can't prove that."
"I don't have to."
She displayed one final document.
A bank transfer.
Signed electronically.
Using Richard's private authorization code.
The room erupted.
Richard stepped backward.
"This is fabricated."
Charlotte shook her head.
"No."
She looked at the lawyer.
"Check the timestamp."
The lawyer did.
His face changed.
"It's authentic."
Richard stared.
"Impossible."
Charlotte smiled.
"You forgot one thing."
"What?"
"My mother."
The room fell silent.
Charlotte opened another file.
"Before she disappeared, Evelyn created a hidden monitoring system inside Solmere."
She turned toward the screen.
"Every major transaction was copied to a private server."
Richard's face became pale.
"You don't have access to that server."
Charlotte smiled.
"Actually..."
She looked toward the door.
"...I do."
The door opened.
Ethan walked in.
Charlotte froze.
The room froze.
Ethan looked exhausted.
Blood stained the side of his shirt.
But he was alive.
Charlotte stared.
"You."
Ethan looked at her.
"I'm sorry."
She didn't move.
Richard shouted:
"Security!"
Nobody moved.
Ethan walked toward Charlotte.
"I found the server."
Charlotte's voice was cold.
"Where?"
"Under the old Solmere chapel."
Her eyes widened.
"What's on it?"
"Everything."
Richard suddenly pulled a gun.
"Nobody move."
The room screamed.
Charlotte stared at him.
Richard pointed the weapon toward Ethan.
"You ruined everything."
Ethan stepped forward.
"No."
He smiled.
"You ruined yourself."
Richard fired.
The shot struck the ceiling.
Security rushed in.
Richard was tackled.
The room erupted in chaos.
Charlotte stood frozen.
Ethan approached her.
"I never betrayed you."
Charlotte looked at him.
"You said you were assigned to watch me."
"I was."
"By whom?"
"Your mother."
"Then why did you disappear?"
"Because I found out someone had infiltrated my team."
"Who?"
Ethan looked toward the captured Richard.
"Not Richard."
Charlotte's stomach tightened.
"Then who?"
Ethan leaned closer.
"Your mother."
Charlotte stared.
"What?"
"She gave the orders."
Charlotte shook her head.
"She was supposed to be dead."
Ethan nodded.
"Exactly."
At 11:20 p.m., Charlotte stood inside the underground chapel beneath Solmere.
The server room was enormous.
Hundreds of drives lined the walls.
Ethan connected the central system.
Files appeared.
Names.
Accounts.
Recordings.
Orders.
Every secret the Solmere Empire had buried for decades.
Charlotte stared.
"Open the oldest file."
Ethan did.
A recording appeared.
The date:
October 14, 2004.
Charlotte's mother's voice filled the room.
Evelyn.
Alive.
Terrified.
"If you're watching this..."
Charlotte stepped closer.
"...then Charlotte is approaching thirty."
Charlotte's heart pounded.
"I need you to understand something."
Evelyn continued.
"Everything I did was designed to protect her."
A pause.
"I know she will hate me."
Charlotte's eyes filled with tears.
"But she must."
Ethan looked at her.
Evelyn continued.
"The only way to defeat the Meridian Circle is to make them believe they control the game."
The screen changed.
A map appeared.
At the center was one name.
EVELYN VALE.
Charlotte whispered:
"She was running it."
Ethan nodded.
Evelyn continued.
"I built the Circle's greatest weakness into its greatest strength."
Charlotte stared.
"The succession trust."
Evelyn smiled sadly.
"Charlotte is not merely the heir."
A pause.
"She is the lock."
The screen went black.
Then another recording appeared.
This time, Evelyn was older.
Closer to the time of her supposed death.
Her voice was softer.
"I know what they will do when Charlotte returns."
"They will attack Solmere."
"They will attack her reputation."
"They will attack everyone she trusts."
"They will try to make her believe she is alone."
Charlotte's eyes filled with tears.
Evelyn continued:
"But she will not be alone."
The recording paused.
Then:
"Because there is one person I know will never abandon her."
Charlotte looked at Ethan.
The recording continued.
"Ethan."
He lowered his head.
Charlotte stared at him.
Evelyn smiled.
"Protect my daughter."
The screen went black.
Ethan whispered:
"I tried."
Charlotte looked away.
She didn't know whether she wanted to forgive him.
Not yet.
But for the first time, she understood.
He had never been her enemy.
He had been one of the few people standing between her and the darkness.
Then the server beeped.
A new file appeared.
No date.
No author.
Only one title.
PROJECT EVE.
Charlotte clicked it.
The screen displayed a live video.
A woman sat in a dark room.
Her hair was shorter.
Her face thinner.
But Charlotte knew her immediately.
Her mother.
Evelyn Vale.
Alive.
Charlotte stopped breathing.
Evelyn looked directly into the camera.
And then—
she smiled.
"Hello, Charlotte."
Charlotte covered her mouth.
The video continued.
"If you're seeing this, then the empire has fallen."
A pause.
"And that means everything went exactly as planned."
Charlotte stared.
Evelyn leaned closer.
"But there's one thing you still don't know."
The screen flickered.
"Alexander Cross is not the enemy."
Charlotte's heart stopped.
Evelyn whispered:
"He never was."
The video ended.
The room became silent.
Charlotte turned toward Ethan.
"What does that mean?"
Ethan looked at the screen.
"I don't know."
Charlotte looked at the final file.
Then she noticed another line beneath it.
PROJECT EVE — FINAL PHASE ACTIVATED.
A countdown appeared.
00:39:17
Charlotte stared.
"What happens when it reaches zero?"
Ethan shook his head.
"I don't know."
Charlotte looked toward the dark server room.
The Solmere Empire was collapsing above them.
Her enemies were closing in.
Her mother was alive.
Her father had spent twenty-two years hiding.
Alexander Cross might not be the villain.
And something called Project Eve was about to begin.
Charlotte took a breath.
"Then we have thirty-nine minutes."
Ethan looked at her.
"To do what?"
Charlotte's eyes hardened.
"Take my empire back."
She turned toward the stairs.
"And find my mother."
Behind them, the countdown continued.
00:38:56.
00:38:55.
00:38:54.
Above them, the Solmere Empire was falling.
May you like
But Charlotte Vale was finally ready to fight for it.
To be continued...
