Chapter 9 — The Trap at the Gala

Chapter 9 — The Trap at the Gala

By six o'clock that evening, the entire city knew Charlotte Vale was hosting a gala.

The invitation had been sent only hours earlier.

No press release.

No announcement.

Just a single black envelope delivered to the most influential people in the city.

Inside was one sentence:

THE SOLMERE EMPIRE INVITES YOU TO WITNESS A NEW BEGINNING.

Everyone wanted to know what it meant.

Some believed Charlotte was announcing a major acquisition.

Others thought she would expose the people who had betrayed her family.

And some believed she was simply trying to prove that the young woman humiliated on the marble floor had truly become the most powerful woman in the room.

Charlotte knew the truth.

The gala was a trap.

But not for her.

At least, that was the plan.

At 7:04 p.m., Charlotte stood in front of the mirror inside the presidential suite of Solmere Hotel.

She wore a long black gown.

Simple.

Elegant.

No diamonds.

No extravagant jewelry.

Only one silver bracelet her mother had given her when she was sixteen.

Ethan's absence was impossible to ignore.

He had disappeared after the shooting at the Harrington estate.

Charlotte had searched everywhere.

Nothing.

No phone.

No security footage.

No trace.

And that frightened her more than if she had found his body.

Victoria stood behind her.

"You look terrifying."

Charlotte smiled faintly.

"Good."

Victoria adjusted the back of Charlotte's dress.

"Are you sure about tonight?"

"No."

Victoria blinked.

Charlotte looked at her reflection.

"I'm sure about one thing."

"What?"

"Everyone downstairs is lying."

Victoria nodded.

"And you?"

Charlotte turned.

"I'm going to lie better."

At 7:30 p.m., the doors opened.

Guests began arriving.

Politicians.

Bankers.

Actors.

Industrialists.

Heirs.

Executives.

People who had spent decades building fortunes while never appearing in newspapers.

The Solmere lobby transformed into a palace.

Crystal chandeliers illuminated the marble.

A string orchestra played softly.

Waiters moved through the crowd carrying champagne.

Charlotte stood at the top of the staircase.

Every conversation stopped.

For a moment, nobody moved.

Then she descended.

Whispers followed her.

"That's Charlotte Vale."

"She looks nothing like the girl from yesterday."

"Is it true she controls fifty-one percent?"

"More than that, apparently."

"Where's Richard?"

"Missing."

"Where's Marcus?"

"Nobody knows."

Charlotte reached the bottom.

The crowd parted.

Victoria stood beside her.

Charlotte smiled.

"Good evening."

Applause began.

Slowly.

Then louder.

Charlotte looked around.

Among the guests were three people she had expected.

Arthur Bennett.

William Harrington.

And Richard Vale.

Charlotte's heart skipped.

Richard was supposed to be missing.

Yet there he stood.

Wearing a black tuxedo.

Smiling.

As though nothing had happened.

Charlotte whispered:

"He's here."

Victoria looked.

Her face went pale.

"How?"

Charlotte's expression didn't change.

"I don't know."

Richard lifted his glass toward her.

Then smiled.

Not warmly.

Not proudly.

Almost like a warning.

At 8:02 p.m., Charlotte stepped onto the stage.

The room became silent.

Behind her was a massive screen displaying the Solmere logo.

Charlotte took the microphone.

"Thank you for coming."

She looked toward Richard.

"And thank you for proving my point."

Several guests exchanged confused glances.

Richard's smile faded.

Charlotte continued.

"Solmere has spent years pretending everything was perfect."

A pause.

"It wasn't."

The screen changed.

Financial charts appeared.

"Four hundred million dollars disappeared."

The room erupted in whispers.

Charlotte continued.

"Assets were transferred."

Another slide.

"Contracts were falsified."

Another.

"Employees were threatened."

The room became tense.

"And people inside this company helped make it happen."

Charlotte looked directly at Arthur.

He shifted in his seat.

Then at William.

He remained expressionless.

Then Richard.

He smiled.

Charlotte continued.

"Tonight, I could name every person responsible."

She paused.

"But I won't."

The guests looked confused.

"Because I want them to reveal themselves."

The screen went black.

Then a message appeared.

WHO IS THE MAN BEHIND THE CURTAIN?

The room fell silent.

Charlotte smiled.

"Let's find out."

At 8:17 p.m., the first person approached Charlotte.

Arthur Bennett.

He held a glass of champagne.

"You've made a dangerous choice."

Charlotte looked at him.

"I've made many."

"This is bigger than Solmere."

"I know."

"You don't understand who you're challenging."

Charlotte smiled.

"Then tell me."

Arthur looked around.

"Not here."

"Why?"

"Because they're watching."

"Who?"

Arthur leaned closer.

"The Circle."

Charlotte's expression didn't change.

"You know about them."

Arthur swallowed.

"I know enough to be afraid."

"Then why did you work for them?"

"I didn't have a choice."

"Everyone has a choice."

Arthur looked at her.

"Not when they have your children."

Charlotte froze.

"Your family?"

Arthur nodded.

"They threatened mine."

"Who?"

Arthur's lips parted.

Then he stopped.

His eyes moved over Charlotte's shoulder.

His face changed.

"What?"

He whispered:

"He's here."

Charlotte turned.

A man stood across the ballroom.

Silver cross.

Dark suit.

Calm expression.

Adrian.

Charlotte's heart pounded.

She walked toward him.

"Adrian."

He smiled.

"Beautiful evening."

"Where have you been?"

"Trying to stay alive."

"You disappeared."

"So did Ethan."

Adrian's smile disappeared.

"You shouldn't trust Ethan."

Charlotte's eyes narrowed.

"Where is he?"

"I don't know."

"You're lying."

"Perhaps."

Charlotte stepped closer.

"Did you shoot him?"

"No."

"Did you bring the Circle here?"

Adrian looked around.

"The Circle doesn't need an invitation."

Charlotte stared at him.

"What does that mean?"

Adrian leaned closer.

"Look at your guests."

Charlotte did.

Everyone appeared normal.

But then she noticed something.

Three men standing near the bar.

Silver crosses.

Two women near the staircase.

Silver crosses.

A waiter.

Silver cross.

Another.

Another.

Charlotte's stomach tightened.

"They're everywhere."

Adrian nodded.

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because tonight isn't your gala."

Charlotte looked at him.

"Then whose is it?"

Adrian whispered:

"Their meeting."

At 8:41 p.m., the doors suddenly locked.

Charlotte heard the click.

Then another.

Then another.

Security guards stationed near the entrances stepped away from the doors.

The lights dimmed.

The music stopped.

Every screen in the ballroom went black.

A voice came through the speakers.

"Good evening, Ms. Vale."

Charlotte looked up.

The voice was distorted.

"You've spent the last few days searching for the truth."

A pause.

"We thought it was time you met it."

The screens came alive.

A photograph appeared.

Charlotte's father.

Then her mother.

Then Adrian.

Then Alexander Cross.

Then—

Ethan.

Charlotte froze.

A video began.

Ethan was sitting in a dark room.

His hands were tied.

His face was bruised.

Charlotte stepped forward.

"No."

Victoria grabbed her arm.

"Charlotte."

Ethan looked directly into the camera.

His lips moved.

Charlotte couldn't hear him.

Then the sound came on.

"If you're watching this..."

Ethan swallowed.

"...I'm sorry."

Charlotte's heart broke.

The video continued.

"I should have told you the truth."

Charlotte stared.

"I was assigned to watch you."

A wave of whispers moved through the ballroom.

Ethan continued.

"Your mother asked me to protect you."

Charlotte's eyes filled with tears.

"But someone else gave me another order."

The screen flickered.

Ethan looked terrified.

"Find the vault."

Charlotte's breathing stopped.

"Find the key."

He paused.

"And make sure Charlotte never opens it."

The screen went black.

Charlotte turned toward Adrian.

"You knew."

Adrian shook his head.

"Not all of it."

"You're lying."

"No."

Charlotte stepped backward.

Suddenly, a loud crash came from the ballroom entrance.

The doors burst open.

Several armed men entered.

Guests screamed.

Security guards dropped to the floor.

Charlotte immediately grabbed Victoria.

"Down!"

Gunfire erupted.

Glass shattered.

People ran.

The orchestra scattered.

Charlotte pulled Victoria behind a marble pillar.

Adrian drew a weapon.

He moved toward the attackers.

Charlotte looked around.

Arthur was on the floor.

William had disappeared.

Richard was nowhere.

And the guests were screaming.

Then Charlotte noticed something.

The attackers weren't shooting at everyone.

They were moving toward one person.

Her.

Adrian shouted:

"Charlotte!"

She looked.

"Run!"

She grabbed Victoria's hand.

They ran toward the service corridor.

But before they reached it—

the lights went out.

Charlotte felt someone grab her.

She screamed.

Then a cloth covered her mouth.

The world disappeared.

When Charlotte opened her eyes, she was sitting in a chair.

Her wrists were tied.

Her head hurt.

The room was dark.

A single lamp hung above her.

Victoria was nowhere.

Charlotte tried to move.

The chair was bolted to the floor.

She heard footsteps.

Someone entered.

Charlotte lifted her head.

The man stopped several feet away.

Dark suit.

Silver cross.

Charlotte's stomach dropped.

"Alexander."

The man laughed.

"No."

He stepped into the light.

Charlotte's blood ran cold.

It was William Harrington.

Her face hardened.

"Where is Victoria?"

"Safe."

"You kidnapped me."

"I saved you."

Charlotte laughed bitterly.

"From whom?"

William looked at her.

"From everyone."

"You're the man behind the curtain."

William smiled.

"Not quite."

Charlotte's eyes narrowed.

"Then who?"

William stepped closer.

"You've been looking in the wrong direction."

He placed a photograph on the table.

It showed Charlotte's mother.

But Charlotte noticed something.

The photograph was taken shortly before Evelyn's death.

Standing beside her mother was a man.

Charlotte recognized him.

The same man from the childhood photograph.

The same man from the security footage.

The same man with the silver cross.

But there was something different.

He wasn't young anymore.

And Charlotte knew exactly who he was.

She had seen him every day in the old Solmere records.

Her father's doctor.

The man who had supposedly died in a car accident.

Charlotte whispered:

"Dr. Samuel Grant."

William nodded.

"Exactly."

Charlotte stared at the photograph.

"He isn't dead."

"No."

"Where is he?"

William smiled.

"You're going to meet him."

Charlotte's heart raced.

William turned toward the door.

Before leaving, he said:

"There's one thing you should know."

Charlotte waited.

William looked back.

"Your mother didn't die because she knew too much."

A pause.

"She died because she was about to tell you who your real father was."

Charlotte froze.

"What?"

William smiled.

"Enjoy the reunion."

The door slammed shut.

Charlotte sat alone in the darkness.

Her entire understanding of her family began to collapse.

Her father might not have been her biological father.

Her mother had hidden the truth.

Ethan had betrayed her.

Adrian was still hiding something.

William was working for someone.

And Dr. Samuel Grant—the doctor who had signed her father's medical report—was alive.

Then the lights came on.

A door opened at the far end of the room.

A man entered slowly.

Gray hair.

Thin face.

Silver cross.

Charlotte stared.

He smiled.

"Hello, Charlotte."

She couldn't breathe.

He walked closer.

"You've grown."

Charlotte's voice trembled.

"You're supposed to be dead."

Dr. Grant smiled.

"That's what your family wanted you to believe."

He placed a file on the table.

Then another.

Then another.

Finally, he placed a photograph in front of her.

Charlotte looked at it.

Her mother.

Pregnant.

Standing beside a man.

Not her father.

Charlotte's entire body went cold.

She looked up.

"Who is he?"

Dr. Grant leaned toward her.

"The man you've been searching for."

Charlotte stared.

"Alexander Cross?"

He smiled.

"No."

He whispered:

"Your real father."

The room went silent.

And somewhere outside, the gala continued without her.

The guests believed Charlotte Vale had simply disappeared.

They were wrong.

Charlotte had just discovered the secret that could destroy the entire Solmere Empire.

Because if the photograph was real—

then the Vale bloodline had never been what anyone believed.

And the woman everyone thought was the rightful heir...

might have inherited something far more dangerous than a hotel.

May you like

She had inherited the war.

To be continued...
