Chapter 12 — Victoria's Redemption

Chapter 12 — Victoria's Redemption

The countdown continued.

00:31:42.

00:31:41.

00:31:40.

Charlotte stared at the screen.

Project Eve had activated.

Her mother's face had disappeared.

The server room was silent except for the faint hum of machines.

Ethan stood beside her.

"We need to move."

Charlotte didn't answer.

"Charlotte."

She finally turned.

"Where's Victoria?"

Ethan's expression changed.

"I don't know."

Charlotte's stomach tightened.

"She was with us at the Harrington estate."

"Before the attack."

"Then she disappeared."

Ethan looked at the security logs.

"There's no record of her leaving."

Charlotte's eyes narrowed.

"Then she's still inside."

Ethan looked at the countdown.

"Thirty-one minutes."

Charlotte shook her head.

"We're not leaving her."

"Charlotte, your mother built this system for a reason."

"Victoria trusted me."

Ethan sighed.

"So did a lot of people."

Charlotte looked at him.

"And I'm done abandoning them."

They found Victoria beneath the ballroom.

She was tied to a chair inside an old service room.

Her white dress was stained with blood.

Charlotte rushed toward her.

"Victoria."

Victoria opened her eyes.

"Charlotte?"

"I'm here."

Charlotte cut the ropes.

Victoria collapsed against her.

"I'm sorry."

Charlotte held her.

"For what?"

"I knew."

Charlotte froze.

"Knew what?"

Victoria's breathing was uneven.

"About my father."

Charlotte looked at Ethan.

"What did he know?"

Victoria swallowed.

"He knew the Meridian Circle was going to destroy Solmere."

"When?"

"Months ago."

Charlotte's expression hardened.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because I was afraid."

"Of your father?"

"Of myself."

Charlotte helped her stand.

Victoria looked down.

"I did terrible things."

Charlotte was silent.

"I gave them information."

Ethan looked at her.

"What information?"

"Your schedule."

Charlotte's eyes narrowed.

"My security routines."

Victoria's voice broke.

"Your mother's old records."

Charlotte stepped back.

"You helped them."

"I thought I was protecting my family."

"You helped them find me."

"I know."

Victoria looked at her.

"I've hated myself every day since."

Charlotte's anger remained.

But she saw something else in Victoria's face.

Guilt.

Real guilt.

"Why did you stop?"

Victoria looked down.

"Because they took my brother."

Charlotte froze.

"They threatened him."

"Is he alive?"

"I don't know."

Victoria wiped her tears.

"But my father does."

Charlotte understood.

"William."

Victoria nodded.

"He's the one controlling everything now."

Ethan shook his head.

"William isn't powerful enough."

Victoria looked at him.

"He's not the one giving orders."

Charlotte's eyes narrowed.

"Who is?"

Victoria whispered:

"Someone above him."

The countdown flashed.

00:25:16.

Charlotte stared at the screen.

"What happens at zero?"

Ethan looked at the system.

"The trust activates."

"And?"

"Every Meridian asset transfers."

"To me."

"Yes."

Victoria stepped closer.

"That's what they want."

Charlotte looked at her.

"Who?"

"The Circle."

"They've been trying to stop the succession."

Victoria shook her head.

"No."

Charlotte frowned.

"They've been trying to make you accept it."

Silence.

Ethan stared at Victoria.

"Explain."

Victoria pointed at the screen.

"Your mother didn't create Project Eve to give Charlotte the empire."

She looked at Charlotte.

"She created it to destroy the Circle."

Charlotte understood.

The trust wasn't an inheritance.

It was a weapon.

If Charlotte accepted control—

she would gain access to every dormant Circle asset.

And then she could dismantle it from inside.

"But why attack Solmere?"

Victoria answered:

"To force you to activate the trust early."

Charlotte's eyes widened.

"They want me to take control."

"Exactly."

Ethan looked at the countdown.

"And once the transfer happens..."

Victoria finished:

"They can take control of you."

A sound echoed through the corridor.

Footsteps.

Charlotte turned.

Ethan drew his weapon.

"Someone's coming."

The door opened.

William Harrington stood there.

His suit was torn.

Blood covered his forehead.

He looked exhausted.

Victoria stared at him.

"Father."

William looked at his daughter.

"Victoria."

Charlotte stepped forward.

"You lied to me."

William looked at her.

"Yes."

"You helped destroy Solmere."

"Yes."

"You kidnapped me."

"I did."

"Why?"

William's face became empty.

"Because I had no choice."

Charlotte laughed.

"That's what everyone says."

William looked at Victoria.

"I did it to keep her alive."

Victoria shook her head.

"No."

William's eyes filled with tears.

"I did it because they had your brother."

Victoria froze.

"My brother?"

William nodded.

"They took him six months ago."

Victoria stepped closer.

"Where is he?"

William looked toward Charlotte.

"That's why I came."

He pulled out a photograph.

A young man.

Tied to a chair.

Charlotte recognized him.

"Ethan."

Everyone froze.

Ethan stared at the photograph.

"That's not me."

William shook his head.

"No."

He pointed.

"That's your brother."

Ethan's face went pale.

Charlotte turned.

"Your brother?"

Ethan didn't answer.

William continued.

"His name is Daniel."

Ethan stepped forward.

"You told me he was dead."

"I had to."

"Why?"

"Because the Circle was watching."

Ethan stared at his father.

"You used me."

William nodded.

"Yes."

Ethan's hands trembled.

"All these years..."

William looked broken.

"I wanted you alive."

Ethan looked away.

Charlotte finally understood.

The people around her were not divided into heroes and villains.

They were divided into people who had made terrible choices—

and people who had not yet been forced to make theirs.

The countdown reached ten minutes.

00:10:00.

The server room suddenly shook.

Lights flickered.

A warning appeared.

EXTERNAL OVERRIDE DETECTED.

Ethan rushed to the console.

"Someone's trying to shut down Project Eve."

Charlotte looked at William.

"Who?"

William shook his head.

"Not me."

Victoria stared at the screen.

"Someone has access to the master code."

Charlotte's heart raced.

"Who?"

Ethan typed rapidly.

"There's only one person."

Charlotte's eyes widened.

"Who?"

Ethan looked at her.

"Evelyn."

Charlotte froze.

"She's shutting it down?"

"No."

He stared at the screen.

"She's changing the target."

Charlotte stepped closer.

"What target?"

The system flashed.

PRIMARY TARGET: MERIDIAN CIRCLE

Then:

SECONDARY TARGET: CHARLOTTE EVELYN VALE

Charlotte's blood ran cold.

"Why would my mother target me?"

Ethan shook his head.

"I don't know."

Victoria suddenly noticed something.

"Look."

A second line appeared.

PROTECTION PROTOCOL: VICTORIA HARRINGTON.

Victoria stared.

"What?"

Charlotte looked at her.

The system continued.

PROTECTED WITNESS: VICTORIA HARRINGTON.

Victoria's eyes filled with tears.

"My name..."

Charlotte realized.

"Your redemption."

Victoria looked at her.

"What?"

"Your mother knew."

"Knew what?"

"That you would help me."

Victoria shook her head.

"I betrayed you."

Charlotte stepped closer.

"But you came back."

The server displayed another message.

WITNESS TESTIMONY REQUIRED.

Charlotte looked at Victoria.

"What does it need?"

Victoria understood.

"My confession."

Victoria sat in front of the server camera.

She took a breath.

"My name is Victoria Harrington."

Her voice trembled.

"I helped the Meridian Circle."

Charlotte stood behind her.

Victoria continued.

"I gave them information about Charlotte Vale."

"I believed I was protecting my family."

"I was wrong."

She looked directly into the camera.

"They threatened my brother."

"They threatened my father."

"But that does not excuse what I did."

Tears rolled down her face.

"I helped them hurt an innocent woman."

She looked at Charlotte.

"And I will spend the rest of my life making that right."

The system processed her statement.

IDENTITY VERIFIED.

TESTIMONY ACCEPTED.

The countdown stopped.

00:00:00

The entire room went dark.

Then every screen turned on.

Thousands of files appeared.

Bank accounts.

Secret contracts.

Political payments.

Bribes.

Blackmail.

Assassinations.

Every crime the Meridian Circle had committed for decades.

Charlotte stared.

"This is everything."

Ethan nodded.

"Your mother stored it all."

Victoria whispered:

"She knew this day would come."

Suddenly, every phone in the city received the same message.

SOLMERE EMPIRE — FULL DISCLOSURE

News networks interrupted their broadcasts.

Banks froze.

Government agencies began receiving encrypted files.

The entire financial structure of the Meridian Circle began collapsing.

Charlotte watched the numbers change.

One account after another.

One company after another.

One secret after another.

The empire that had ruled from the shadows for decades was being exposed.

But then one final message appeared.

PROJECT EVE COMPLETE.

Charlotte exhaled.

"It's over."

Ethan shook his head.

"No."

Charlotte looked at him.

He pointed at the screen.

A final file had appeared.

EVELYN VALE — LOCATION

Charlotte's heart stopped.

She opened it.

Coordinates appeared.

A remote estate.

Outside the city.

Charlotte stared.

"She's there."

William looked at the coordinates.

His face changed.

"I know that place."

"Where?"

"The original Vale estate."

Charlotte's eyes widened.

"The house burned down."

William shook his head.

"That was the story."

Charlotte looked toward the door.

"Then we're going."

Victoria stood.

"I'm coming."

Charlotte looked at her.

"You don't have to."

Victoria shook her head.

"I do."

Charlotte nodded.

Then she looked at Ethan.

"What about Daniel?"

Ethan stared at the photograph of his brother.

"We find him first."

Charlotte nodded.

"We do both."

One hour later, they reached the old Vale estate.

The building was hidden beneath trees.

No lights.

No guards.

No signs of life.

Charlotte stepped out of the car.

Her heart pounded.

This was the place where everything had begun.

Her mother's secrets.

Her father's lies.

The Meridian Circle.

Her inheritance.

Her entire life.

She walked toward the front door.

It opened before she touched it.

Charlotte froze.

A voice came from inside.

"Come in."

Evelyn.

Charlotte's breath caught.

She stepped inside.

The house was exactly as she remembered it.

The furniture.

The paintings.

The smell.

The memories.

At the end of the hallway stood a woman.

Older.

Thinner.

Gray streaks in her hair.

But unmistakably—

Evelyn Vale.

Charlotte couldn't move.

Her mother smiled through tears.

"My little girl."

Charlotte's lips trembled.

"You lied to me."

Evelyn nodded.

"Yes."

"You let me believe you were dead."

"Yes."

"You watched me suffer."

"I did."

"Why?"

Evelyn stepped closer.

"Because I needed you to become strong enough to survive them."

Charlotte's tears finally fell.

"You could have told me."

"I wanted to."

"Then why didn't you?"

Evelyn looked toward the window.

"Because someone was listening."

Charlotte frowned.

"Who?"

Evelyn's expression changed.

"Everyone."

Charlotte stepped closer.

"Where is Alexander?"

Evelyn went silent.

"Mom?"

Evelyn looked at her.

"Alexander is dead."

Charlotte froze.

"Then why did Adrian say—"

"Adrian was wrong."

"About everything?"

"No."

Evelyn took a breath.

"About one thing."

"What?"

Evelyn looked directly at her daughter.

"Alexander wasn't the man behind the curtain."

Charlotte waited.

Evelyn whispered:

"Neither was I."

Charlotte's heart stopped.

"Then who?"

Evelyn's face became terrified.

For the first time, Charlotte saw genuine fear in her mother's eyes.

"The man behind the curtain..."

Evelyn looked toward the hallway.

"...is someone you already know."

A sound came from behind Charlotte.

Footsteps.

She turned.

And saw the man standing there.

Charlotte's blood went cold.

It was someone she trusted.

Someone who had helped her uncover the truth.

Someone who had stood beside her through the entire nightmare.

Evelyn whispered:

"Charlotte..."

The man smiled.

And said:

"Hello, sweetheart."

Charlotte couldn't breathe.

Because she knew that voice.

She had heard it her entire life.

It was Richard Vale.

May you like

And he wasn't supposed to be alive.
