Chapter 3 — The Boardroom Revelation

Chapter 3 — The Boardroom Revelation

The room forgot how to breathe.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Nobody seemed willing to accept what was standing in front of them.

Charlotte Vale.

Alive.

Standing at the head of the Solmere boardroom.

Richard Vale stared at her as though he were looking at a ghost.

Perhaps, in a way, he was.

For three years, he had lived with the certainty that Charlotte was gone.

He had signed documents declaring her deceased.

He had watched her inheritance disappear into trusts he controlled.

He had convinced shareholders that the Vale family needed him.

He had slowly transformed himself from a grieving uncle into the unofficial ruler of Solmere Empire.

And now the woman he had buried in his mind was standing six feet away.

Calm.

Composed.

Alive.

Richard's mouth opened.

Nothing came out.

Charlotte looked around the room.

Twenty-one seats.

Twenty-one board members.

Twenty-one people who would soon have to choose a side.

She recognized every face.

Some had attended her mother's funeral.

Some had signed statements confirming Charlotte's death.

Some had quietly accepted money.

Others had simply looked away.

Charlotte remembered every one of them.

She placed both hands on the polished table.

"Good morning."

Nobody answered.

Richard finally found his voice.

"This is impossible."

Charlotte tilted her head.

"That's an interesting way to greet your niece."

"You are not Charlotte."

A few board members shifted uncomfortably.

Charlotte smiled.

"Then who am I?"

Richard pointed toward the door.

"Security."

Nothing happened.

His voice became louder.

"Security!"

The door opened.

Two security officers appeared.

One was Daniel Brooks.

The same man from the lobby.

Daniel looked at Charlotte.

Then at Richard.

Richard pointed at her.

"Remove this woman."

Daniel didn't move.

"Mr. Vale..."

"Do your job."

Daniel swallowed.

"I can't."

Richard stared at him.

"What did you say?"

Daniel's voice became firmer.

"I can't remove her."

Richard's face darkened.

"Why?"

Daniel looked at Charlotte.

Then back at Richard.

"Because she belongs here."

A murmur moved through the room.

Richard looked at Charlotte again.

Charlotte said nothing.

She didn't need to.

She had already won her first small battle.

Richard turned toward Marcus.

"You knew."

Marcus didn't answer.

Richard stepped closer.

"You knew she was alive."

Marcus remained silent.

"How long?"

Still nothing.

Richard slammed his hand against the table.

"HOW LONG?"

Marcus finally looked at him.

"Since yesterday."

Richard's face twisted with anger.

"You should have told me."

"I did."

"No."

Marcus shook his head.

"I told you she came to the hotel."

"You didn't tell me she would come here."

"I didn't know."

Charlotte watched them argue.

Interesting.

They were already turning against each other.

She hadn't even opened the first document.

Arthur Bennett suddenly stood.

"This is absurd."

Charlotte looked at him.

Arthur adjusted his glasses.

"We cannot conduct a board meeting under these circumstances."

Charlotte smiled.

"Why not?"

"Because we don't know who you are."

"Yes, you do."

"No."

Arthur shook his head.

"The official record states that Charlotte Evelyn Vale died three years ago."

Charlotte reached into her bag.

"Then perhaps the official record needs correcting."

She placed a document on the table.

Arthur stared at it.

"What is that?"

"A court-certified identity verification."

Arthur picked it up.

His eyes moved quickly across the page.

His face changed.

Charlotte noticed.

He knew.

"This..."

He swallowed.

"This could be forged."

Charlotte nodded.

"It could."

Richard immediately seized on the statement.

"Exactly."

Charlotte looked at him.

"Which is why I brought the person who verified it."

The door opened.

An older man entered.

Thomas Avery's former legal partner, James Avery.

He carried a black briefcase.

Richard's expression changed.

James walked to the table.

"My name is James Avery."

Arthur stared at him.

"You're from Avery & Cole."

"I was."

James placed a second document on the table.

"This is the original succession agreement executed by Evelyn Vale twenty years ago."

Richard stood.

"No."

James looked at him.

"You should sit down, Richard."

Richard didn't move.

James opened the document.

"The agreement was placed in a protected trust."

Charlotte watched silently.

James continued.

"Upon Charlotte Vale reaching the age of thirty, fifty-one percent of the controlling shares of Solmere Empire automatically transfer to her."

The room erupted.

"What?"

"Fifty-one percent?"

"That can't be right."

"Why was this never disclosed?"

Richard's voice cut through the noise.

"Because it's fraudulent!"

James looked at him.

"The document was notarized, witnessed, and registered."

"By whom?"

"Your own lawyers."

Richard's face turned red.

"This is ridiculous."

James opened another file.

"The original is stored in a government archive."

He removed a certificate.

"And this is the official confirmation."

He placed it in front of the chairman.

Richard didn't touch it.

Charlotte reached across the table.

She picked it up.

Then she turned it so everyone could see.

At the bottom was a seal.

The official seal of the Vale Family Trust.

Charlotte looked around.

"My mother planned this twenty years ago."

Nobody spoke.

"She knew there would come a day when someone would try to take Solmere from me."

Richard shook his head.

"Your mother never trusted you with business."

Charlotte's eyes hardened.

"You weren't there when she signed it."

"I was her brother."

"And you betrayed her."

Richard stepped toward her.

"Be careful."

Charlotte smiled.

"Or what?"

Richard lowered his voice.

"You don't understand what you're doing."

Charlotte leaned forward.

"I understand exactly what I'm doing."

She placed another folder on the table.

"And I understand what you did."

Richard's eyes fell to the folder.

Charlotte opened it.

The first document was a bank statement.

"Northstar Holdings."

Richard's face changed.

Charlotte looked at the board.

"Does anyone know what this company is?"

Silence.

She continued.

"Northstar Holdings purchased Solmere properties at below-market prices."

Another document.

"Then sold them to another company at inflated prices."

Another.

"The profits were transferred offshore."

Another.

"Then returned through private investment funds."

She looked at Richard.

"Your investment funds."

Richard shook his head.

"That's not evidence."

Charlotte smiled.

"No?"

She pulled out another document.

"Then perhaps this is."

A signature.

Richard's signature.

Authorizing a transfer of seventy-two million dollars.

His face went pale.

"I didn't sign that."

Charlotte raised an eyebrow.

"You didn't?"

"No."

"Interesting."

She turned toward Arthur.

"Because your office certified it."

Arthur froze.

Charlotte looked at Marcus.

"And your department processed the transfer."

Marcus said nothing.

Charlotte turned back to Richard.

"So either you're lying..."

She paused.

"...or three separate departments committed fraud."

The room became silent.

One board member leaned forward.

"Richard."

Richard looked at him.

"What?"

"Is this true?"

"No."

Another board member picked up the documents.

"What about these properties?"

Richard's face hardened.

"I can explain."

Charlotte smiled.

"Of course you can."

She closed the folder.

"But you won't explain it to me."

She looked toward the large screen mounted on the wall.

"You'll explain it to everyone."

The screen turned on.

A video began playing.

Richard appeared on screen.

Three years younger.

Standing in a private office.

Talking to William Harrington.

The room went completely silent.

On the video, Richard was saying:

"Once Charlotte is gone, the trust becomes irrelevant."

Someone gasped.

Another board member stood.

"What the hell?"

Richard stared at the screen.

"No."

The video continued.

William Harrington's voice could be heard.

"What if she comes back?"

Richard laughed.

"She won't."

Charlotte watched him.

The video continued.

Richard said:

"Everyone believes she's dead."

William asked:

"And the inheritance?"

Richard answered:

"We'll control it before anyone realizes what's happening."

The video stopped.

Silence.

Absolute silence.

Richard looked around the room.

Nobody looked at him the same way anymore.

He turned toward Charlotte.

"Where did you get that?"

Charlotte smiled.

"From your private archive."

Richard's expression became one of pure disbelief.

"You broke into my office?"

"No."

Charlotte leaned back.

"You forgot to delete the backups."

Arthur stood.

"This meeting needs to stop."

Charlotte looked at him.

"Why?"

Arthur's voice shook.

"This is a legal matter."

Charlotte nodded.

"Exactly."

She turned toward James Avery.

James stood.

"Under the succession agreement, Charlotte Vale is now the controlling shareholder of Solmere Empire."

Richard slammed his fist onto the table.

"I refuse to recognize this."

Charlotte looked at him.

"You don't have to."

She stood.

"Your recognition isn't required."

Richard stared at her.

"Charlotte."

She walked around the table.

"Three years ago, you told the world I was dead."

She stopped directly in front of him.

"You signed documents."

Another step.

"You took control of my mother's company."

Another.

"You stole from the employees who trusted my family."

Richard's breathing became heavier.

"And yesterday..."

Charlotte's eyes became cold.

"...you let that woman drag me across the floor of my own hotel."

Richard looked toward Victoria's empty chair.

"I didn't know."

"No."

Charlotte shook her head.

"You didn't care."

Richard whispered:

"You think you've won."

Charlotte smiled.

"I don't think."

She looked directly into his eyes.

"I know."

Suddenly, the doors opened.

A group of journalists entered.

Cameras flashed.

Reporters shouted questions.

"Ms. Vale!"

"Are you really Charlotte Vale?"

"Where have you been?"

"Did Richard Vale steal from Solmere?"

"Was your mother's death an accident?"

Richard stepped backward.

"Who allowed them in?"

James Avery calmly answered.

"I did."

Richard stared at him.

"You can't do this."

James smiled.

"Actually, we can."

A reporter pushed forward.

"Ms. Vale, can you confirm that you are the legal heir to Solmere Empire?"

Charlotte looked at the cameras.

For three years, she had hidden from them.

For three years, she had let people believe she was dead.

Now there was nowhere left to hide.

She took a breath.

Then she spoke.

"Yes."

The room erupted.

Cameras flashed.

Questions came from every direction.

"Why did you disappear?"

"Who tried to kill you?"

"Was your mother murdered?"

"Will Richard Vale be arrested?"

Charlotte raised her hand.

The room slowly quieted.

"My name is Charlotte Evelyn Vale."

She paused.

"I am alive."

Another wave of cameras.

"And as of today, I am the legal controlling shareholder of Solmere Empire."

Richard looked as though the floor had disappeared beneath him.

Charlotte continued.

"I disappeared three years ago because I discovered evidence that my life was in danger."

The reporters went silent.

"I was told my mother's death was an accident."

She looked toward Richard.

"It wasn't."

A collective gasp moved through the room.

Charlotte's voice remained steady.

"Someone tried to erase my identity."

She looked at the board.

"Someone tried to steal my inheritance."

Then she looked at the cameras.

"And someone believed that if they waited long enough..."

She paused.

"...I would never come back."

The room was silent.

Charlotte smiled.

"They were wrong."

Outside the building, television crews were already broadcasting the story.

Within minutes, the headline appeared across every major news network.

MYSTERIOUS HEIR RETURNS TO SOLMERE EMPIRE

Then another.

CHARLOTTE VALE ALIVE AFTER THREE YEARS

Then another.

SOLMERE DYNASTY SHAKEN BY SHOCKING REVELATION

Richard's phone began ringing.

Again.

Again.

Again.

He ignored every call.

Then one message appeared.

From William Harrington.

GET VICTORIA OUT OF THE CITY. NOW.

Richard stared at it.

His blood ran cold.

He looked toward Charlotte.

She was speaking to reporters.

But then she turned.

Their eyes met.

Charlotte's expression changed.

She smiled.

Not warmly.

Not kindly.

A warning.

Richard understood.

She knew about Victoria.

She knew about William.

She knew about everything.

And she wasn't finished.

Not even close.

Across the city, Victoria Harrington sat frozen in front of a television.

Charlotte's face filled the screen.

The woman she had dragged across the marble floor yesterday.

The woman she had called poor.

The woman she had told to leave.

Was now being introduced by every major news network as the rightful heir to one of the most powerful business empires in the country.

Victoria's hands began to shake.

"No."

Her father stood behind her.

"Victoria."

She didn't turn.

"No."

"Listen to me."

"She knew."

William's face tightened.

"What?"

"She knew who she was."

Victoria looked at him.

"She knew everything."

William walked toward the television.

Charlotte's voice continued playing.

"...the truth about my mother's death will eventually come out."

William immediately turned the television off.

Victoria stared at him.

"What aren't you telling me?"

"Nothing."

"You're lying."

"Victoria—"

"You know her."

William said nothing.

Victoria's eyes filled with fear.

"Father..."

She whispered:

"What did our family do to her?"

William closed his eyes.

For several seconds, he remained silent.

Then he said something that made Victoria's blood run cold.

"We weren't supposed to hurt her."

Victoria stared at him.

"What?"

"We were only supposed to make sure she disappeared."

At Solmere headquarters, Charlotte finally entered the office that had once belonged to her mother.

She stood in the doorway.

The room looked almost exactly the same.

The desk.

The bookshelves.

The painting.

The chair where Evelyn had spent thousands of hours working.

Charlotte slowly walked toward the desk.

She touched the surface.

For a moment, she was twelve again.

Her mother was sitting there.

Smiling.

Calling her name.

Charlotte closed her eyes.

Then she noticed something.

A small envelope.

Hidden beneath the bottom drawer.

Her mother's handwriting was on it.

For Charlotte.

Charlotte's heart stopped.

She opened the envelope.

Inside was a single piece of paper.

Four words.

TRUST NO ONE, NOT EVEN FAMILY.

Charlotte stared at it.

Then she turned the paper over.

There was another sentence.

If you're reading this, they know you're alive.

Her phone rang.

Ethan.

Charlotte answered.

"What happened?"

His voice was tense.

"Charlotte, we have a problem."

"What kind?"

"We found something."

"Where?"

"At the old Vale mansion."

Charlotte waited.

Ethan lowered his voice.

"It's about your mother."

Charlotte's expression hardened.

"What about her?"

"We found a hidden vault."

A pause.

"And Charlotte..."

"Yes?"

"There are records inside that could change everything."

Charlotte looked down at her mother's letter.

"Who knows about it?"

Ethan didn't answer immediately.

Then:

"Someone else was there before us."

Charlotte's blood ran cold.

"Who?"

Ethan whispered:

"We don't know."

The call ended.

Charlotte stood alone in her mother's office.

Outside, reporters were shouting her name.

Inside, the old clock on the wall ticked steadily.

For three years, Charlotte had believed she was hunting the people who killed her mother.

Now she was beginning to realize something much worse.

She might have spent three years hunting the wrong enemy.

Charlotte folded the letter.

Then she looked toward the city.

Her expression hardened.

"All right."

She whispered:

"Let's find out who really killed you, Mom."

And somewhere in the shadows of Solmere Empire—

someone was already watching her.

Someone who had known Charlotte would return.

Someone who had been waiting for this exact day.

May you like

And someone who was about to make sure Charlotte regretted coming home.

To be continued...
