Chapter 7 — The Secret Vault

Chapter 7 — The Secret Vault
The message remained on Charlotte's screen.
You were never supposed to survive.
She read it twice.
Then a third time.
Her fingers tightened around the phone.
Across the boardroom, everyone was watching her.
Richard.
Marcus.
Arthur.
William.
Elena.
And Ethan.
Nobody spoke.
Finally, Ethan asked quietly:
"Charlotte?"
She turned the phone toward him.
He read the message.
His expression hardened.
"Is that him?"
"I think so."
"Where is he?"
Charlotte looked toward the door.
"I don't know."
Elena suddenly stood.
"He's here."
Everyone turned toward her.
Charlotte frowned.
"What?"
Elena's face had gone pale.
"Adrian."
She looked toward the hallway.
"He wouldn't send that message unless he was already inside."
Ethan immediately reached for his phone.
"I'll lock down the building."
Charlotte stopped him.
"No."
"Charlotte—"
"If he wanted me dead, I'd already be dead."
Ethan looked at her.
"That's not comforting."
"It wasn't meant to be."
Charlotte walked toward the door.
Richard suddenly spoke.
"Don't."
She stopped.
"Why?"
Richard looked genuinely frightened.
"Because you don't understand Adrian."
Charlotte turned.
"Then explain him."
Richard shook his head.
"I can't."
"Can't?"
Richard's voice dropped.
"I don't know where his loyalty ends."
Charlotte stared at him.
"To my mother?"
Richard hesitated.
"To your family."
"That's not an answer."
Richard looked away.
"Adrian loved Evelyn."
Charlotte's expression hardened.
"And?"
"He believed she betrayed him."
"How?"
Richard remained silent.
Charlotte stepped closer.
"What did she do?"
Richard whispered:
"She chose your father."
The room became silent.
Charlotte felt something twist inside her.
Her mother had never mentioned Adrian.
Never once.
Not his name.
Not his existence.
Nothing.
Why?
Before Charlotte could ask another question, the lights went out.
Everyone froze.
The emergency lights came on.
Red.
Dim.
Unsettling.
Ethan immediately moved toward Charlotte.
"Stay behind me."
A sound came from the hallway.
Footsteps.
Slow.
Calm.
Approaching.
One.
Two.
Three.
The door opened.
A man entered.
Tall.
Dark coat.
Silver cross pinned to his collar.
He looked to be in his early fifties.
His hair was beginning to gray.
His face was calm.
Almost painfully calm.
He looked around the room.
Then his eyes landed on Charlotte.
For several seconds, neither moved.
Then he smiled.
"You have your mother's eyes."
Charlotte stared at him.
"Adrian Cross."
His smile faded slightly.
"So you've heard my name."
"I've heard enough."
Adrian looked at Richard.
"You told her?"
Richard didn't answer.
Adrian looked back at Charlotte.
"I suppose you have questions."
"I have thousands."
"Then you're going to need a very long night."
Ethan stepped forward.
"You aren't going anywhere near her."
Adrian looked at him.
"I don't intend to hurt her."
"How do we know that?"
"You don't."
Adrian turned back toward Charlotte.
"That's the problem with truth."
Charlotte studied him.
"Did you kill my mother?"
Adrian's expression changed.
"No."
"Did you know she was going to die?"
A pause.
"Yes."
Charlotte's heart stopped.
"How?"
"Because she told me."
"When?"
"The night before."
Charlotte's voice became colder.
"What did she tell you?"
Adrian looked toward Elena.
"Everything."
Elena lowered her eyes.
Charlotte looked between them.
"Then why didn't you save her?"
Adrian's face hardened.
"Because I tried."
"And failed?"
"No."
He looked directly at Charlotte.
"I was stopped."
"By whom?"
Adrian didn't answer.
Charlotte stepped toward him.
"By whom?"
He whispered:
"Someone your family trusted."
Charlotte's eyes narrowed.
"Richard?"
Adrian shook his head.
"Marcus?"
"No."
"William?"
"No."
"Arthur?"
Adrian smiled sadly.
"You still think the four men in this room are the whole story."
Charlotte froze.
Adrian continued:
"They aren't."
Then he reached inside his coat.
Ethan immediately moved.
Adrian slowly removed a small brass key.
He placed it on the table.
Charlotte stared at it.
"What's that?"
"Something your mother left behind."
"Where?"
Adrian looked at her.
"Your family home."
"The old Vale mansion?"
"Yes."
Charlotte's eyes narrowed.
"We searched it."
"You searched the house."
He pointed toward the key.
"You didn't find the vault."
Two hours later, Charlotte stood outside the old Vale mansion.
Rain fell heavily.
The estate had been abandoned for years.
The gates were rusted.
The gardens were overgrown.
The windows were dark.
This was where Charlotte had spent her childhood.
Where she had learned to ride a bicycle.
Where her mother had once held summer parties.
Where her father had disappeared from her life.
And where, apparently, her mother had hidden a secret powerful enough to terrify everyone around her.
Ethan stood beside her.
Adrian remained several feet away.
Charlotte turned toward him.
"If this is a trap—"
"It isn't."
"You expect me to trust you?"
"No."
Adrian looked toward the mansion.
"I expect you to trust your mother."
Charlotte said nothing.
They entered.
The house smelled of dust and old wood.
Ethan turned on his flashlight.
Charlotte walked through the entrance hall.
Her eyes moved across the walls.
Family photographs.
Paintings.
Memories.
She stopped in front of one.
Her mother.
Her father.
And herself as a child.
Charlotte touched the frame.
"I remember this day."
Adrian stood behind her.
"So do I."
Charlotte turned sharply.
"You were there?"
Adrian nodded.
"I was always there."
"Why didn't I know you?"
"Your mother wanted it that way."
"Why?"
"Because your father hated me."
Charlotte stared at him.
"Why?"
Adrian looked away.
"That's a story your mother wanted you to hear from her."
"But she's dead."
"Which is why you're finally hearing it from me."
They continued.
Adrian led them down a narrow corridor.
Then stopped in front of the library.
Charlotte frowned.
"Why here?"
"Your mother loved this room."
He walked toward a large bookshelf.
"She spent most of her nights here."
He removed a book.
Nothing happened.
He removed another.
Still nothing.
Then a third.
A click sounded.
The entire bookshelf moved.
Charlotte stared.
Behind it was a narrow staircase.
Ethan looked at her.
"You've got to be kidding."
Charlotte shook her head.
"My mother built a secret passage in her library?"
Adrian smiled.
"Your mother built many things people never knew about."
They descended.
The stairs seemed endless.
At the bottom was a steel door.
No handle.
Only a keypad.
Charlotte looked at Adrian.
"What's the code?"
"Your birthday."
Charlotte entered it.
Nothing.
She tried again.
Nothing.
Adrian shook his head.
"Not your birthday."
"Then what?"
"Your mother's."
Charlotte entered Evelyn's birth date.
Still nothing.
She stared at the keypad.
Then remembered something.
Her mother had once told her:
"If you ever forget the way home, remember the day we became a family."
Charlotte entered the date her father had adopted her.
The lock clicked.
The door opened.
Ethan whispered:
"What the hell?"
The vault was enormous.
Shelves covered every wall.
Documents.
Hard drives.
Photographs.
Bank records.
Legal files.
Boxes labeled with dates.
A wall-sized map of Solmere's properties.
Charlotte stepped inside.
She couldn't speak.
Her mother had been preparing for this.
For years.
Adrian stood behind her.
"She knew they would come for you."
Charlotte looked at him.
"Who?"
"Everyone."
Ethan began photographing the documents.
Charlotte opened the first box.
Inside were property deeds.
The second contained bank records.
The third contained correspondence between Evelyn and several government officials.
Then she found a black box.
No label.
She opened it.
Inside was a cassette tape.
Charlotte stared.
"What's this?"
Adrian's expression changed.
"That's for you."
"How do you know?"
"Because I gave it to her."
Charlotte looked at him.
"You?"
Adrian nodded.
"I told her to record everything."
Ethan found an old cassette player nearby.
He inserted the tape.
Static filled the room.
Then Evelyn's voice.
Charlotte froze.
"My darling Charlotte."
Her eyes filled with tears.
The voice continued.
"If you're hearing this, then I am dead."
Charlotte covered her mouth.
Ethan looked away.
Evelyn continued.
"I prayed you would never need this."
A pause.
"But if you are here, then they failed to stop you."
Charlotte closed her eyes.
Her mother's voice continued.
"There are people inside Solmere who have betrayed us."
A pause.
"Richard."
Charlotte looked at Adrian.
"Marcus."
Another pause.
"Arthur."
Then—
"William."
Charlotte's face hardened.
"But they are not the ones who started this."
Ethan leaned closer.
Evelyn's voice became quieter.
"The real danger is the organization behind them."
Charlotte frowned.
"What organization?"
The tape continued.
"Years ago, your father discovered a private financial network operating across Europe, Asia, and America."
Charlotte's eyes widened.
"They used legitimate companies to control governments, banks, hotels, media groups, and political organizations."
Adrian looked down.
"Their name is..."
Static interrupted.
The recording became distorted.
Charlotte hit the player.
"Come on."
Evelyn's voice returned.
"...The Meridian Circle."
Everyone froze.
Adrian whispered:
"They're still alive."
Charlotte looked at him.
"You know them."
"I knew of them."
"Who are they?"
"A network."
"Who runs it?"
Adrian shook his head.
"Nobody knows."
The tape continued.
"Your father discovered the Meridian Circle was using Solmere to move money."
Charlotte stared.
"Money?"
"Billions."
Ethan looked at the financial records.
"That's why Northstar exists."
Charlotte nodded.
Her mother continued.
"I tried to expose them."
The tape crackled.
"They found out."
Charlotte's eyes filled with tears.
"I made a mistake."
Adrian closed his eyes.
Evelyn continued:
"I trusted someone."
A pause.
"Someone I should never have trusted."
Charlotte leaned closer.
"Who?"
The tape became silent.
Then Evelyn whispered:
"If Charlotte returns..."
Static.
"...do not trust..."
More static.
Charlotte hit the machine.
Nothing.
The recording had ended.
She stared at it.
"Who?"
No answer.
Ethan looked at the tape.
"Maybe we can restore the damaged section."
"Do it."
He nodded.
Charlotte turned toward Adrian.
"You knew about the Meridian Circle."
"Yes."
"You knew my mother was investigating them."
"Yes."
"You knew she was in danger."
"Yes."
"And you did nothing."
Adrian looked at her.
"I tried."
"You keep saying that."
"Because it's true."
"Then prove it."
Adrian stepped closer.
He reached into his coat.
He removed another photograph.
This one was much older.
Charlotte took it.
Her face changed.
It showed her father.
Standing beside a group of men.
One of them was Adrian.
Another was Richard.
And in the center—
a man Charlotte had never seen before.
A silver symbol was pinned to his jacket.
The same symbol from the security footage.
Charlotte stared.
"Who is he?"
Adrian's voice became quiet.
"The founder of the Meridian Circle."
"What's his name?"
Adrian looked at the photograph.
"Alexander Cross."
Charlotte frowned.
"Cross?"
"Yes."
She looked at Adrian.
"Your father?"
Adrian nodded.
Charlotte's blood ran cold.
The mysterious organization threatening her family had been created by Adrian's father.
The man who had disappeared years ago.
The man who had supposedly died before Charlotte was born.
Her family was connected to the organization from the beginning.
Charlotte suddenly remembered the message.
You were never supposed to survive.
She looked at Adrian.
"Why would they want me dead?"
Adrian's face hardened.
"Because your mother changed the rules."
"What rules?"
He pointed toward a sealed metal box at the back of the vault.
"Open that."
Charlotte walked toward it.
The box had no lock.
Only a fingerprint scanner.
She placed her finger on it.
The scanner flashed green.
The box opened.
Inside was a single document.
Charlotte removed it.
She read the first line.
Her face became completely pale.
BENEFICIARY: CHARLOTTE EVELYN VALE
Below it was another sentence.
CONTROLLING ASSET: 51% OF SOLMERE EMPIRE + MERIDIAN CIRCLE TRUST HOLDINGS
Charlotte stared.
Ethan looked over her shoulder.
"What does that mean?"
Adrian answered.
"Your mother didn't just leave you Solmere."
Charlotte looked at him.
"What else?"
Adrian's voice was grim.
"She left you the key to the Meridian Circle."
Charlotte's eyes widened.
"Why?"
"Because she wanted you to destroy it."
Suddenly—
a loud metallic sound echoed through the mansion.
Everyone froze.
Ethan reached for his weapon.
"Someone's upstairs."
Charlotte looked toward the vault entrance.
Another sound.
Footsteps.
Someone was coming down the hidden staircase.
Adrian's face changed.
"They found us."
Ethan whispered:
"How?"
Adrian looked at Charlotte.
"Because someone followed us."
Charlotte tightened her grip around the document.
"Who?"
The footsteps stopped.
Silence.
Then a voice came from the darkness.
"Charlotte."
She knew that voice.
Her blood ran cold.
It was Marcus.
Charlotte looked at Adrian.
"How did he know?"
Adrian's expression became grim.
"Because someone inside your team told him."
Ethan immediately turned toward Charlotte.
"I didn't."
Charlotte looked at him.
"I know."
A shadow appeared at the bottom of the stairs.
Marcus stepped into the vault.
Behind him were two armed men.
He smiled.
"You should have stayed at the hotel."
Charlotte stood her ground.
"You followed us."
Marcus looked around the vault.
"Your mother hid this place for twenty years."
His eyes landed on the documents.
"And now it's mine."
Charlotte laughed.
"No."
Marcus frowned.
"You don't understand."
Charlotte lifted the document.
"I understand perfectly."
Marcus stepped forward.
"Give me the file."
"No."
His smile disappeared.
"Charlotte."
She looked directly at him.
"You stole my company."
Marcus's eyes hardened.
"And now I'm taking it back."
Charlotte shook her head.
"You never owned it."
Then she smiled.
"And neither did Richard."
Marcus raised his hand.
The two men behind him moved forward.
Adrian stepped between them.
"Touch her..."
He paused.
"...and you'll regret it."
Marcus laughed.
"You think you're still powerful, Adrian?"
Adrian's eyes became cold.
"No."
He looked toward the ceiling.
"I know exactly how powerful I am."
Then the lights went out.
A gunshot echoed through the vault.
Charlotte screamed.
Someone fell.
When the emergency lights returned—
Marcus was gone.
One of his men was lying on the floor.
And Adrian had disappeared.
Charlotte stared at the empty doorway.
Then she looked down.
The document was still in her hand.
But one page was missing.
The page containing the name of the person who controlled the Meridian Circle.
Charlotte's face went pale.
Someone had taken it.
Someone who had been inside the vault.
Someone who knew exactly what they were looking for.
And then her phone vibrated.
A new message appeared.
YOU HAVE THE KEY.
A second message followed.
BUT YOU DON'T HAVE THE NAME.
Then a third.
YET.
Charlotte stared at the screen.
She finally understood.
The vault hadn't been the end of the mystery.
It was only the beginning.
May you like
And somewhere above them, someone had already started the next move.
To be continued...
