Chapter 8 — The Man Behind the Curtain

Chapter 8 — The Man Behind the Curtain

The gunshot still echoed inside Charlotte's head.

For several seconds after the emergency lights came back on, nobody moved.

The vault was filled with smoke.

One of Marcus Reed's men lay unconscious near the steel staircase.

The second man was gone.

Marcus was gone.

And Adrian Cross—

was nowhere to be seen.

Charlotte stood frozen, still holding the documents from the vault.

Ethan rushed toward her.

"Are you hurt?"

She shook her head.

"No."

"Are you sure?"

"Yes."

He looked around.

"Where's Adrian?"

"I don't know."

Ethan swore under his breath.

Charlotte looked at the floor.

A small pool of blood was spreading beside the unconscious guard.

She stared at it.

"Did Adrian shoot him?"

Ethan crouched down.

"No."

"How do you know?"

"Different caliber."

He picked up a shell casing.

"Someone else fired the shot."

Charlotte looked toward the dark corridor.

"Someone else was here."

Ethan nodded.

"That's what I'm afraid of."

Charlotte looked at the missing page.

The one containing the name of the person who controlled the Meridian Circle.

Her mother's warning echoed in her mind.

Trust no one, not even family.

She finally understood why.

The danger wasn't outside her family.

It had been inside it for decades.

Twenty minutes later, the police arrived.

Charlotte didn't trust them.

She didn't say why.

She simply watched them enter the mansion.

One officer approached.

"Ms. Vale, we need your statement."

Charlotte looked at him.

"About what?"

"The shooting."

She glanced toward Ethan.

"Do you know who fired?"

"No."

"Do you know who the attackers were?"

"One was Marcus Reed."

The officer's eyebrows rose.

"The CEO?"

"Former CEO."

"Where is he?"

"If I knew, I wouldn't be standing here."

The officer wrote something down.

Charlotte watched him carefully.

Then she noticed his badge.

A small silver symbol.

A black cross inside a circle.

Her blood ran cold.

The same symbol.

The Meridian Circle.

Charlotte looked at Ethan.

He noticed too.

"Don't react," he whispered.

Charlotte remained calm.

The officer looked up.

"Everything okay?"

She smiled.

"Perfect."

At 4:18 a.m., Charlotte returned to Solmere.

She didn't sleep.

She walked directly into her office.

Ethan followed.

"You're going to collapse."

"Not tonight."

"Charlotte."

She looked at him.

"We need to know who the Meridian Circle is."

"We need to know who leaked our location first."

Charlotte turned.

"You think someone inside Solmere told Marcus?"

"I know someone did."

"Who?"

"That's what I'm trying to find out."

He placed his laptop on the desk.

"I checked the building access logs."

Charlotte walked over.

"Anyone suspicious?"

"Three people accessed the system after midnight."

"Names."

"Daniel Brooks."

Charlotte frowned.

"The security chief?"

"Yes."

"Who else?"

"Peter Collins."

"The general manager."

"Yes."

"And the third?"

Ethan hesitated.

Charlotte looked at him.

"Who?"

"Elena."

Charlotte's expression changed.

"No."

"I know."

"She wouldn't."

"We don't know that."

Charlotte shook her head.

"She came to warn me."

"Or to gain your trust."

Charlotte stared at him.

"You think she betrayed us?"

"I think we can't eliminate the possibility."

Charlotte looked toward the window.

She didn't want to believe it.

But she had learned one thing very quickly.

Trust could get you killed.

"Bring her in."

Elena was brought to the office at 5:02 a.m.

She looked exhausted.

Charlotte closed the door.

"Did you tell Marcus where we were going?"

Elena stared at her.

"No."

"Your access card was used."

"I don't have an access card."

Ethan looked at her.

"Someone used your credentials."

Elena shook her head.

"I don't have access to Solmere systems."

Charlotte watched her carefully.

"Then how did your credentials appear in the logs?"

"I don't know."

Charlotte remained silent.

Elena suddenly looked frightened.

Then she whispered:

"They have my daughter."

Charlotte's expression changed.

"What?"

Elena's eyes filled with tears.

"My daughter."

"When?"

"Three days ago."

"Who?"

"The Meridian Circle."

Charlotte stepped closer.

"How do you know?"

"They sent me a photograph."

Elena opened her handbag.

She pulled out her phone.

The photograph showed a young woman sitting inside a dark room.

Her hands were tied.

A date was written on the wall behind her.

Charlotte's face hardened.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because they said if I told anyone..."

Elena's voice broke.

"...she would die."

Charlotte took the phone.

"When did they contact you?"

"Yesterday."

"Before or after you came to me?"

"Before."

Charlotte looked at Ethan.

"Did they order you to come here?"

Elena nodded.

"Yes."

"What did they tell you to do?"

"Find the vault."

Charlotte's heart sank.

"Why?"

"They said there was something inside that belonged to them."

"The missing page."

Elena nodded.

"They knew it was there."

Charlotte stared at her.

"Who gave you the information?"

Elena hesitated.

"A man."

"Who?"

"I never saw his face."

"His name?"

"He called himself..."

Elena stopped.

Charlotte waited.

"Mr. Gray."

Ethan's expression changed.

"That's impossible."

Charlotte turned.

"Why?"

Ethan opened his laptop.

"Because Mr. Gray is a name used by the Meridian Circle."

"By whom?"

"Different people."

Charlotte frowned.

"So anyone could be Mr. Gray."

"Exactly."

Elena looked at Charlotte.

"He told me something else."

"What?"

"He said you would come back."

Charlotte's eyes narrowed.

"When?"

"Before you were born."

Silence.

Charlotte stared at her.

"That doesn't make sense."

Elena shook her head.

"I know."

"He knew I would return before I was even born?"

"Yes."

Charlotte stepped backward.

The room suddenly felt smaller.

At 6:30 a.m., Charlotte went through every document recovered from the vault.

Ethan sat across from her.

Stacks of papers surrounded them.

Property deeds.

Trust agreements.

Bank transfers.

Letters.

Photographs.

But there was one thing Charlotte couldn't stop thinking about.

The missing page.

Whoever took it knew exactly what it contained.

Which meant they had either been inside the vault before—

or had access to Evelyn's original records.

Charlotte opened another file.

Inside was a letter from her mother.

Charlotte,

If you are reading this, then I failed to destroy the Circle.

Charlotte's eyes moved quickly.

Do not trust Adrian completely.

She stopped.

Ethan noticed.

"What?"

She showed him.

He read the sentence.

Then the next one.

He loves you because you remind him of me.

Charlotte frowned.

Another line.

But love does not make a man innocent.

Ethan leaned back.

"So your mother didn't trust Adrian either."

"No."

Charlotte kept reading.

Adrian will tell you he tried to save me.

A pause.

He did.

Charlotte's eyes widened.

But he will never tell you what he did before that.

The letter ended.

Charlotte stared at the final sentence.

"What did he do?"

Ethan shook his head.

"We need to find him."

Charlotte stood.

"Before the Meridian Circle does."

At 8:12 a.m., Adrian Cross sat alone in an abandoned church.

Rain hit the stained-glass windows.

He looked exhausted.

A phone rang.

He answered.

"You took the page."

A voice replied:

"Yes."

"Why?"

"You know why."

Adrian closed his eyes.

"She cannot know yet."

"She's already asking questions."

"Then slow her down."

A pause.

"You're protecting her."

Adrian's jaw tightened.

"I owe Evelyn."

"No."

The voice became colder.

"You owe us."

Adrian said nothing.

The caller continued.

"Your father built the Circle."

"I know."

"Your family protected it."

"I know."

"And now Charlotte has the key."

Adrian looked toward the altar.

"What do you want?"

"Her."

Adrian's eyes hardened.

"No."

"Then you will lose everything."

The line went dead.

Adrian sat alone.

He reached into his coat.

There was a photograph.

Evelyn.

Charlotte as a child.

And himself.

He whispered:

"I'm sorry."

At 9:47 a.m., Charlotte arrived at the Solmere archives.

The archivist looked nervous.

"Ms. Vale."

"I need access to everything related to my father."

The man swallowed.

"Mr. Vale's files were sealed."

"By whom?"

"Richard."

"Then unseal them."

"Some files require board authorization."

Charlotte looked at him.

"Who controls the board?"

The archivist understood.

"Of course."

He opened the archive.

Charlotte spent an hour searching.

Then she found something.

A death certificate.

Her father's.

She studied it.

Date of death.

Cause.

Heart failure.

But there was something strange.

The signature of the doctor didn't match.

Charlotte looked at Ethan.

"Get me the original."

He scanned it.

"This is a copy."

"Find the original."

They searched.

Eventually, Ethan found a scanned medical report.

Charlotte read it.

Then froze.

There was no evidence of natural death.

The cause had been changed.

She looked at the date.

Her father had supposedly died two days before a major Solmere acquisition.

The same acquisition that later became one of the largest assets of Northstar Holdings.

Charlotte's heart pounded.

"My father's death wasn't natural."

Ethan looked at her.

"Looks like it."

Charlotte turned another page.

There was a handwritten note.

PATIENT SHOWED SIGNS OF POISONING.

Charlotte's blood ran cold.

"Poison."

Ethan stared at the document.

"Who signed this?"

Charlotte looked.

The doctor was dead.

He had died six months after her father.

Cause of death:

Car accident.

Another coincidence.

Another dead witness.

Charlotte closed her eyes.

"My family has been lying to me for twenty years."

At noon, Victoria Harrington walked into Solmere.

This time, nobody stopped her.

She went directly to Charlotte's office.

Charlotte looked up.

"Victoria."

"I need to tell you something."

Charlotte gestured toward the chair.

"Sit."

Victoria sat.

She looked terrified.

Charlotte noticed immediately.

"What happened?"

Victoria placed a folder on the desk.

"I found this in my father's study."

Charlotte opened it.

Inside were photographs.

Old contracts.

Bank records.

A list of names.

Charlotte's eyes moved across the pages.

Then stopped.

Her father's name.

Evelyn's name.

Richard.

Marcus.

William.

And another name.

Alexander Cross.

Victoria whispered:

"My father has been afraid of that man my entire life."

Charlotte looked up.

"Did your father tell you who he is?"

"No."

"Why did you bring this to me?"

Victoria's eyes filled with tears.

"Because I think my father is going to kill someone."

"Who?"

Victoria looked at her.

"You."

Charlotte remained silent.

Victoria continued.

"He said you were becoming dangerous."

"Did he say when?"

"Tonight."

Charlotte's expression hardened.

"Why?"

"I don't know."

Victoria reached into her handbag.

She pulled out a small key.

"My father keeps a second safe."

Charlotte looked at it.

"Where?"

"At the Harrington estate."

"What is inside?"

Victoria shook her head.

"I don't know."

"Then why give me the key?"

"Because I don't want to become like him."

Charlotte studied her.

For the first time, she believed Victoria.

Maybe the socialite who had once humiliated her was finally beginning to understand the world she had been born into.

Charlotte stood.

"Let's go."

Victoria looked surprised.

"Where?"

"Your house."

At 2:18 p.m., Charlotte and Victoria arrived at the Harrington estate.

William was nowhere to be seen.

The house was silent.

Victoria led Charlotte into her father's study.

She walked toward a painting.

Behind it was a small safe.

She inserted the key.

The safe opened.

Inside were three files.

Charlotte took the first.

It contained records of Solmere's secret transactions.

The second contained photographs.

Charlotte opened it.

Her face went pale.

The photographs showed her mother meeting Alexander Cross.

Then her father.

Then Richard.

Then William.

But the final photograph was different.

It showed Charlotte.

As a child.

Standing beside her mother.

Across the street, someone was watching them.

The date on the photograph was twenty-four years ago.

Charlotte whispered:

"Someone was watching me before I even knew about the Circle."

Victoria stared.

"Why?"

Charlotte opened the third file.

Inside was a single letter.

She recognized the handwriting.

Her father's.

Evelyn,

If anything happens to me, never let Charlotte meet Alexander.

Charlotte's heart stopped.

She read the next line.

He is not my brother anymore.

Then the final line:

He is the man behind the curtain.

Charlotte looked up.

Alexander Cross.

Not Adrian.

His father.

The founder of the Meridian Circle.

The man everyone had been afraid of.

The man who had been watching Charlotte since childhood.

The real enemy.

But then Charlotte noticed something written beneath the letter.

A second handwriting.

One she recognized.

Richard's.

Too late.

Charlotte stared at the words.

Victoria whispered:

"What does that mean?"

Charlotte didn't answer.

Her phone rang.

Unknown number.

She answered.

A man's voice spoke.

"You're getting close."

Charlotte's heart raced.

"Alexander."

Silence.

Then a quiet laugh.

"No."

The voice said:

"You still haven't figured out who you're really talking to."

Charlotte froze.

"Who are you?"

The caller whispered:

"The man behind the curtain."

The line went dead.

Charlotte stared at the phone.

Victoria looked terrified.

"Who was it?"

Charlotte slowly lowered the phone.

"I don't know."

Then she looked at the photograph again.

The man watching her as a child.

Something about him felt familiar.

Not his face.

His posture.

His hand.

The silver cross.

Charlotte suddenly remembered the security footage.

The man standing behind her mother.

The same symbol.

But the figure wasn't Alexander.

It was someone younger.

Someone who had been there years later.

Charlotte looked at Victoria.

"The photograph."

"What?"

"Look at the man in the background."

Victoria leaned closer.

Her face changed.

"That's..."

She stopped.

Charlotte stared.

"Who?"

Victoria whispered:

"I've seen him before."

"Where?"

Victoria swallowed.

"In my father's house."

Charlotte's blood ran cold.

"Who is he?"

Victoria looked at her.

"I think..."

She paused.

"...he's our family's private doctor."

Charlotte's eyes widened.

The doctor who had signed her father's medical report.

The doctor who had later died in a supposed accident.

The witness who could have exposed the truth.

And perhaps—

the man who had been working for the Meridian Circle all along.

Charlotte suddenly understood.

The conspiracy had never been one straight line.

It was a web.

And every family she had trusted was caught inside it.

The Vales.

The Harringtons.

The Cross family.

Solmere.

The board.

The police.

Even the people who had come to help her.

Everyone had secrets.

Charlotte looked toward the dark hallway.

Then she noticed something.

The front door was open.

They had left it locked.

Victoria whispered:

"Did you open that?"

Charlotte shook her head.

"No."

Footsteps sounded upstairs.

Slow.

Measured.

Someone was inside the house.

Charlotte reached for Victoria's hand.

"Stay behind me."

The footsteps stopped.

Then a voice called from above.

"Charlotte."

She looked up.

A man's shadow appeared on the staircase.

He was wearing a dark coat.

And on his collar—

the silver cross.

Charlotte's breath caught.

The man stepped into the light.

It wasn't Alexander.

It wasn't Adrian.

It wasn't Marcus.

It was someone Charlotte knew.

Someone she had trusted.

Someone who had stood beside her since the beginning.

Ethan.

Charlotte stared at him.

He looked at her with an expression she had never seen before.

Not fear.

Not guilt.

Something colder.

Recognition.

Victoria whispered:

"Charlotte..."

Ethan smiled.

"I'm sorry."

Charlotte stepped backward.

"You..."

Ethan slowly descended the stairs.

"I tried to keep you away from this."

Charlotte's voice trembled.

"You're working for them."

He didn't deny it.

Instead, he said:

"I was working for your mother first."

Charlotte froze.

Ethan stopped three steps away.

"And that's why I came back."

Charlotte stared at him.

"Why?"

Ethan's expression became unreadable.

"Because your mother never told you the most important part."

"What?"

He looked directly into her eyes.

"She didn't hide the vault from the Meridian Circle."

He paused.

"She hid it from you."

Charlotte's blood ran cold.

"Why?"

Ethan's voice dropped to a whisper.

"Because the person your mother feared most..."

He looked toward the door.

"...was you."

Charlotte's face went pale.

Before she could respond, the lights went out.

A gunshot echoed through the house.

Victoria screamed.

When the lights returned—

Ethan was gone.

And on the floor where he had been standing was a single silver cross.

Charlotte stared at it.

Then she noticed blood.

Not hers.

Not Victoria's.

Someone had been shot.

But there was no body.

Only a trail of blood leading toward the basement.

Charlotte looked at Victoria.

"Stay here."

Victoria shook her head.

"No."

Charlotte stared at her.

Victoria took a breath.

"Whatever happens next..."

She tightened her grip on the key.

"...I'm coming with you."

Charlotte nodded.

Together, they followed the blood into the darkness.

Neither woman knew what waited below.

But Charlotte finally understood the terrifying truth.

The man behind the curtain had been watching her for years.

And now—

May you like

he had finally stepped onto the stage.

To be continued...
