CHAPTER 17 — THE FINAL BETRAYAL

THE MAID WHO WAS REALLY HIS WIFE

CHAPTER 17 — THE FINAL BETRAYAL

The most painful betrayal was not when an enemy hurt you.

You expected that.

You prepared for that.

The true betrayal was when the person you trusted most looked you in the eyes...

and chose to destroy you anyway.

The hidden vault beneath the old Castillo estate had finally opened.

For years, everyone believed the answer to the Castillo inheritance was hidden inside that room.

The fortune.

The empire.

The power.

But the truth waiting inside was something far more dangerous.

A choice.

Alejandro held Victor Castillo's final letter.

The handwriting was unmistakable.

His father's.

The man who raised him.

The man who taught him how to lead.

The man whose approval Alejandro spent his entire life trying to earn.

Daniel stood across from him.

His confidence was gone.

The arrogance.

The certainty.

Everything had disappeared the moment he heard those words.

"To my son Alejandro..."

"No."

Daniel whispered.

Alejandro looked up.

"You're hearing what you don't want to hear."

Daniel stepped forward.

"That letter is fake."

A cold smile appeared on Alejandro's face.

"You spent years creating lies."

"You should know better than anyone what a real one looks like."

Daniel's fists tightened.

"You think because Victor called you his son, you won?"

A bitter laugh escaped him.

"You still don't understand."

"I was born into this family."

"I had the blood."

"The name."

"The right."

Alejandro stared at him.

"And yet he chose me."

Those words destroyed Daniel more than any weapon could.

Because deep down...

That was the one thing he could never accept.

Victor chose Alejandro.

Not because of blood.

Because of character.

Elena arrived moments later with Lucas.

The little boy held her hand tightly.

He looked at Alejandro.

"Is everything okay, Daddy?"

The word stopped him.

Daddy.

After everything.

After all the years stolen from them.

He finally heard the word he thought he would never hear.

Alejandro knelt.

"Yes, my son."

Daniel watched.

And something dark crossed his face.

Jealousy.

Pure and uncontrollable.

"You still have everything."

Daniel whispered.

Alejandro looked at him.

"No."

A pause.

"I have what matters."

That was when Daniel made his final move.

He pulled out a small device.

Everyone froze.

Marcus immediately stepped forward.

"Don't."

Daniel smiled.

"Still protecting him?"

Marcus said nothing.

Because he knew.

The truth about him was coming.

Alejandro looked at Marcus.

"How much did you know?"

The question was not angry.

It was tired.

Marcus lowered his eyes.

"Everything."

Elena's face changed.

"You knew?"

Marcus nodded.

"I knew about Victor's plan."

"I knew Daniel was involved."

"I knew about the inheritance."

Silence.

Alejandro looked hurt.

"Then why?"

Marcus struggled to answer.

"Because your father made me promise."

"Promise what?"

"To protect the family."

Alejandro laughed quietly.

A painful sound.

"Everyone keeps saying they protected my family."

"But everyone kept secrets from me."

Marcus accepted the accusation.

Because it was true.

"I was wrong."

For the first time, Marcus admitted it.

"I thought protecting you meant controlling what you knew."

"But I forgot something Victor understood."

"People cannot be protected by being kept in the dark."

Before Alejandro could answer...

Daniel activated the device.

A screen appeared.

A video.

Victor Castillo.

Again.

But this time, the recording was different.

Victor looked older.

More serious.

And standing beside him...

Was Isabella.

Alejandro froze.

"If you are watching this..."

Victor said.

"Then my greatest fear has happened."

"Family has turned against family."

Daniel smiled.

"Watch carefully."

The video continued.

Victor spoke.

"I need everyone to understand one thing."

"The Castillo inheritance does not belong to a person."

"It belongs to a purpose."

Then came the sentence nobody expected.

"The true heir is not Alejandro."

The room froze.

Daniel smiled.

"There."

But then Victor continued.

"The true heir is not Daniel."

Daniel's smile disappeared.

"The true heir is the person who protects the family when power is offered to them."

Silence.

The answer was not a name.

It was a test.

Victor looked directly at the camera.

"Alejandro, if you are watching this, I need you to understand something."

"I never chose you because you were my son."

A pause.

"I chose you because you became my son."

Alejandro looked away.

For years, he wanted proof he belonged.

And Victor had given it to him.

Not through blood.

Through love.

Daniel stepped backward.

"No."

His voice became unstable.

"No, that isn't fair."

Alejandro looked at him.

"Life was never fair."

Daniel's anger exploded.

"You think you are better than me?"

"I spent my whole life watching you receive everything."

"The attention."

"The respect."

"The throne."

"I was the real Castillo!"

Elena looked at him.

"No."

Daniel turned.

"You were given a family."

A pause.

"And you chose power instead."

The words destroyed him.

Because they were true.

Suddenly, the sound of footsteps filled the estate.

Security.

Police.

But Alejandro noticed something strange.

They weren't coming for Daniel.

They were surrounding Marcus.

Everyone froze.

The lead investigator walked forward.

"Marcus Hale."

Marcus looked confused.

"You are under arrest."

Alejandro immediately stepped forward.

"For what?"

The investigator opened a file.

"Conspiracy."

"Kidnapping."

"Evidence manipulation."

"And the attempted murder of Elena Castillo."

The room went silent.

Alejandro looked at Marcus.

The man who stood beside him for years.

The man he trusted.

The man who saved him countless times.

Marcus did not deny it.

And that was the most terrifying part.

"Tell me it's not true."

Alejandro whispered.

Marcus looked at him.

Pain filled his eyes.

"I wish I could."

Elena stepped back.

Another betrayal.

Another person who claimed to protect them.

Another person who lied.

But Marcus said something before the officers took him away.

Something that stopped everyone.

"I didn't start this."

A pause.

"I only continued it."

Alejandro stared.

"What does that mean?"

Marcus looked toward the hidden vault.

"Ask Isabella."

Everyone turned.

But Isabella was gone.

On the table, where Victor's letter had been...

A new note remained.

Written in Isabella's handwriting.

"You finally found the truth."

"Now find out who I was protecting you from."

Alejandro picked up the note.

His expression changed.

Because underneath Isabella's signature was another name.

A name that should have been impossible.

A name from his childhood.

A name connected to the beginning of everything.

Victor Castillo.

The final betrayal was not that someone lied.

It was that the person Alejandro trusted most...

May you like

may have been protecting the wrong enemy all along.
