CHAPTER 5 — THE HUSBAND’S PROMISE

THE MAID WHO WAS REALLY HIS WIFE
CHAPTER 5 — THE HUSBAND’S PROMISE
A promise made in happiness was easy.
Anyone could promise forever when life was beautiful.
Anyone could say I will protect you while standing beneath wedding lights, surrounded by flowers and smiling faces.
But a promise made after losing everything…
That was different.
Because it carried guilt.
Regret.
And the weight of every moment that could never be returned.
Alejandro Castillo had made many promises in his life.
Promises to investors.
Promises to business partners.
Promises to powerful people who measured loyalty in contracts and signatures.
But there was only one promise that ever truly mattered.
The one he made to Elena.
I will always find you.
Three years ago, he believed it meant searching until he discovered where she had gone.
Now he understood the truth.
Finding someone was not enough.
You had to help them come back.
The morning after Vivian’s confession, Alejandro stood outside Elena’s bedroom door for almost ten minutes.
He had faced enemies with weapons.
He had negotiated with men who wanted him destroyed.
He had walked into rooms where everyone wanted him to fail.
But knocking on this door felt harder than all of them.
Because Elena was not an enemy.
She was the person he had failed.
Finally, he knocked.
A few seconds later:
“Come in.”
Her voice was quiet.
Still careful.
Still uncertain.
Alejandro entered.
Elena was sitting by the window, holding an old photograph.
Their wedding photo.
She noticed him looking.
“I found it in the storage room.”
Alejandro smiled sadly.
“You kept it?”
Elena looked at the picture.
“I kept everything.”
The answer surprised him.
“Everything?”
She nodded.
“Because Vivian could take my clothes.”
A pause.
“She could take my room.”
Her fingers touched the photograph.
“She could take my name.”
Her voice became softer.
“But I refused to let her take my memories.”
Alejandro looked away.
Because hearing Elena say those words hurt more than anger would have.
She had survived by holding onto pieces of a life everyone told her was gone.
“Elena.”
She looked up.
“I need you to know something.”
A long silence.
“I don't expect you to forgive me.”
Her expression changed.
“Alejandro…”
“No.”
He shook his head.
“Let me say this.”
He sat across from her.
“For three years, I told myself I was searching for you.”
His voice lowered.
“But I was searching for the person I remembered.”
Elena stared at him.
“I wasn't there when you needed me.”
“You didn't know.”
“I should have known something was wrong.”
Silence.
The painful kind.
The kind where two people loved each other but could not erase what happened.
“I promised I would protect you.”
Alejandro whispered.
“And I failed.”
A tear appeared in Elena’s eyes.
Not because she blamed him.
Because she knew he believed every word.
“You know what hurt the most?”
Alejandro looked at her.
“Not the basement.”
“Not the fear.”
“Not even Vivian.”
She swallowed.
“It was thinking you stopped looking.”
Those words broke something inside him.
Because that was the one thing he needed her to know.
“I never stopped.”
Elena looked at him.
“I searched every day.”
“I spent nights reading reports.”
“I followed every rumor.”
“I went to places nobody knew about.”
His voice became emotional.
“Every morning, I woke up believing today was the day I would find you.”
A tear rolled down her cheek.
“But you didn't.”
“No.”
He accepted it.
“I didn't.”
For a moment, neither spoke.
Then Alejandro reached into his pocket.
He placed something on the table.
A small velvet box.
Elena froze.
“What is that?”
He opened it.
Inside was her wedding ring.
The same ring she lost the night she disappeared.
“I found it in the garden.”
Elena stared.
“I thought it was gone.”
“So did I.”
Alejandro picked it up.
“But I kept searching.”
He placed it in her hand.
“Because I believed one day I would give it back to you.”
Elena closed her fingers around it.
Then came the question he feared.
“Do you still love me?”
Alejandro went completely still.
Because there was no business answer.
No strategic answer.
No perfect answer.
Only the truth.
“Yes.”
Elena looked down.
“Even after everything?”
“Yes.”
“Even though I am not the same woman?”
Alejandro moved closer.
“You survived something nobody should have survived.”
His voice was steady.
“You are not less because you were hurt.”
“You are stronger because you came back.”
Elena looked away.
Because part of her wanted to believe him.
And part of her was terrified.
“I don't know how to be your wife anymore.”
Alejandro's heart tightened.
“Then don't.”
She looked surprised.
“What?”
“Don't try to become the Elena from three years ago.”
A pause.
“I don't want the woman who disappeared.”
“I want the woman who survived.”
For the first time since returning home…
Elena smiled.
Small.
Almost invisible.
But Alejandro noticed.
Because he remembered every version of her.
Including the one who was slowly healing.
Later that day, Alejandro made another promise.
Not to Elena.
To himself.
He stood in the company headquarters, looking over the city.
The same empire he built.
The same empire someone used against his wife.
Marcus entered.
“Sir.”
Alejandro turned.
“Find everything about Vivian Moretti.”
“We already searched her records.”
“Search again.”
Marcus nodded.
“And Richard Hale?”
“Find him before he disappears.”
A pause.
“Also…”
Alejandro looked at the city below.
“Investigate every person who had access to Elena’s disappearance.”
Marcus understood.
The search had changed.
They were no longer looking for Elena.
They were hunting the people who erased her.
That night, Elena received a package.
No sender.
No address.
Inside was a photograph.
Her photograph.
Taken three years ago.
The night she disappeared.
On the back was a message.
You think Alejandro saved you.
He didn't.
He was the reason they chose you.
Elena's hands began shaking.
Because there was only one person who knew enough to write that.
Vivian.
But underneath the message was something else.
A second line.
One that made Elena's blood run cold.
Ask your husband what happened the night your child died.
Elena froze.
Because there was one thing Alejandro never mentioned.
One memory from before her disappearance.
One secret buried beneath three years of lies.
And suddenly she wondered…
Was Vivian trying to destroy her?
May you like
Or was she revealing a truth Alejandro had hidden?
