CHAPTER 1

CHAPTER 1

THE WOMAN IN THE GOLD DRESS

The Blackwood mansion was known as a place where power lived.

Everyone in the city knew its name.

A place where billion-dollar decisions were made behind closed doors.

A place where politicians, businessmen, and powerful families fought for a chance to stand beside the Blackwoods.

The mansion was not just a home.

It was a symbol.

A symbol of wealth.

A symbol of influence.

A symbol that the Blackwood family was untouchable.

But behind the golden gates…

Behind the expensive walls…

There was a secret nobody knew.

The woman everyone ignored…

Was the woman who owned the entire house.

The sound of expensive heels echoed through the marble hallway.

Slow.

Confident.

Arrogant.

Victoria Laurent entered the Blackwood mansion wearing a gold designer dress that looked like it had been created only for her.

Every employee stopped moving.

Not because they admired her.

Because they feared her.

Victoria was famous for two things.

Her beauty.

And her cruelty.

She was the daughter of one of the largest business families in Europe.

She had grown up believing one simple thing:

Money gave people the right to do anything.

And today…

She came to claim what she believed belonged to her.

Adrian Blackwood.

"Where is Mr. Blackwood?"

Victoria asked.

Her voice carried through the room.

One of the staff members immediately lowered her head.

"Mr. Blackwood is in the study, Miss Laurent."

Victoria smiled.

"Good."

She looked around.

"This house needs someone who knows how to manage it properly."

Nobody answered.

Everyone knew better.

Near the back garden, a young woman was cleaning the windows.

She wore a simple maid uniform.

Her hair was tied back.

Her face was pale.

And one hand rested protectively over her stomach.

Elena Carter.

The woman nobody noticed.

The woman everyone thought was just another employee.

But nobody knew…

She was Adrian Blackwood's wife.

Elena had been married to Adrian for two years.

The world knew Adrian Blackwood as a ruthless billionaire.

A man who controlled multiple companies.

A man whose name made competitors nervous.

But Elena knew another side of him.

The man who made her tea when she was sick.

The man who held her hand when she was afraid.

The man who promised her:

"No matter what happens, you will always have a place beside me."

But Elena had chosen to hide her identity.

Not because Adrian asked her to.

Because she wanted to know the truth.

She wanted to know whether people respected her…

Or only respected her title.

So she lived quietly inside her own home.

And she discovered something painful.

Without Adrian's name…

People treated her like she was nothing.

"Hey."

A cold voice interrupted her.

Elena turned.

Victoria stood behind her.

Looking at her like she was something unpleasant.

"Why are you cleaning this area?"

Elena lowered her head politely.

"I'm sorry, Miss. I was assigned to help with the garden area."

Victoria looked her up and down.

Then she laughed.

"Interesting."

Elena frowned slightly.

"What?"

"You actually look comfortable pretending to be someone important."

The words confused Elena.

"I don't understand."

Victoria stepped closer.

"You don't need to pretend with me."

Elena stayed silent.

Victoria smiled.

"I know your type."

"My type?"

"Women who enter wealthy houses and think they can change their position."

Elena's expression changed.

"I am only doing my job."

Victoria laughed.

"Your job?"

She looked at Elena's uniform.

"That is all you are."

The other servants nearby became uncomfortable.

Everyone knew Victoria was dangerous.

But nobody dared stop her.

Because Victoria Laurent was Adrian Blackwood's most important business partner.

Or at least…

That was what everyone believed.

"You should remember your place."

Victoria continued.

"People like you survive because people like us allow it."

Elena looked at her calmly.

"Respectfully, Miss Laurent, I believe everyone deserves respect."

That sentence changed everything.

Victoria's smile disappeared.

"Excuse me?"

Elena looked away.

"I did not mean to offend you."

"No."

Victoria stepped closer.

"You meant exactly what you said."

She noticed Elena's hand resting on her stomach.

A small movement.

A protective gesture.

Victoria's eyes narrowed.

"Are you pregnant?"

The question was cold.

Elena froze.

"That is none of your concern."

Victoria smiled.

"So it is true."

She looked at Elena's stomach.

"How interesting."

A pause.

"Even the maids are trying to secure their future now."

The insult was cruel.

The nearby servants looked shocked.

Elena's face became pale.

But she remained silent.

Because she had learned something during these months.

People who wanted to hurt you often wanted a reaction.

And she refused to give them one.

That silence angered Victoria more.

"Are you ignoring me?"

"No."

"Then answer me."

Elena looked at her.

"I have nothing to explain."

Victoria's eyes became cold.

"You really don't know who you are speaking to."

Elena smiled faintly.

"Maybe that is the problem."

"What?"

"Maybe people only act powerful when they believe others are beneath them."

The hallway became completely silent.

Nobody had ever spoken to Victoria like that.

Her face turned dark.

"You are brave."

Elena said nothing.

"Too brave."

Victoria looked around.

"People like you need to be taught lessons."

She reached toward a table.

A pair of sewing scissors sat there.

One of the staff members immediately became nervous.

"Miss Laurent..."

Victoria ignored her.

She picked up the scissors.

"I was only going to correct your uniform."

Elena stepped back.

"Please don't."

Victoria grabbed the fabric near Elena's sleeve.

"You should learn humility."

"Stop."

Elena's voice became more urgent.

"I'm pregnant."

For a second…

Victoria paused.

Then she smiled.

"Exactly."

Before anything else could happen…

The front doors opened.

A powerful voice filled the mansion.

"Why is my wife on the floor?"

Everyone froze.

Adrian Blackwood stood at the entrance.

His suit was perfectly tailored.

His expression was terrifyingly calm.

The kind of calm that warned everyone nearby.

Danger was coming.

His eyes immediately found Elena.

His pregnant wife.

Sitting on the marble floor.

Her hand holding her injured arm.

Victoria standing above her with scissors.

The entire world seemed to stop.

Victoria turned.

Her confident expression disappeared.

"Your…"

She swallowed.

"Your wife?"

Adrian walked forward.

Slowly.

"Take your hands off her."

Victoria immediately stepped back.

"I didn't know."

Her voice changed.

"She was dressed like one of the maids."

Adrian looked at Elena.

Then at Victoria.

"She is not a maid."

His voice became colder.

"She is the lady of this house."

Elena tried to stand.

Adrian immediately removed his coat.

He placed it around her shoulders.

"Are you hurt?"

She shook her head.

"I'm okay."

But Adrian noticed the pain in her eyes.

And his expression changed.

Someone had hurt the woman he loved.

Inside his own home.

Victoria panicked.

"It was an accident."

Adrian looked at the scissors.

Then at Elena's arm.

"An accident?"

"I was only trying to discipline a disrespectful employee."

The temperature in the room dropped.

Adrian stepped closer.

"She is my wife."

A pause.

"You attacked my pregnant wife inside my own home."

Victoria's face went pale.

"Please."

"I swear I didn't recognize her."

Adrian stared at her.

"That is exactly the problem."

Everyone watched as the powerful billionaire made his decision.

No hesitation.

No forgiveness.

"Put the scissors down."

Victoria slowly lowered them.

"Then leave this house immediately."

Her eyes widened.

"Adrian..."

"You heard me."

"You cannot destroy our partnership over one misunderstanding."

Adrian's expression remained emotionless.

"This was not a misunderstanding."

A pause.

"It was a warning."

He looked directly into her eyes.

"And you just showed me exactly who you are."

Victoria stepped back.

Fear finally appeared on her face.

"Our partnership..."

"Is over."

Adrian turned away.

"Security."

Two guards immediately appeared.

"Escort Miss Laurent out."

Victoria looked at Elena.

A mixture of hatred and humiliation filled her eyes.

"This isn't finished."

Elena said nothing.

But Adrian did.

"Threatening my wife was your final mistake."

As Victoria was taken away…

Adrian knelt beside Elena.

The entire mansion watched.

The same woman they ignored.

The same woman they treated like a servant.

Was now being protected by the most powerful man in the city.

"My wife."

Adrian whispered.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

Elena looked down.

"Because I wanted to know who people really were."

His eyes softened.

"And what did you find?"

A sad smile appeared on her face.

"That without your name… I was invisible."

Adrian's expression darkened.

Not at her.

At himself.

Because he had never realized.

The woman he loved had been suffering in silence.

That night, Adrian stood alone in his office.

The security footage played on the screen.

He watched every moment.

Every insult.

Every threat.

Every second Elena had been humiliated.

His hands tightened.

For years, people feared Adrian Blackwood.

But tonight…

Someone had awakened something far more dangerous.

A husband protecting his wife.

Meanwhile, Victoria Laurent sat inside her car outside the Blackwood mansion.

Her tears of humiliation had disappeared.

Only anger remained.

She looked at the house.

At the place she believed would one day belong to her.

"Enjoy your victory, Elena."

She whispered.

"Because I will take everything from you."

She picked up her phone.

A man's voice answered.

"Is it time?"

Victoria smiled.

"Yes."

A pause.

"The Blackwoods have something precious."

Her eyes turned cold.

May you like

"And I know exactly how to destroy it."
