CHAPTER 8

THE LIE THAT BROKE THEIR MARRIAGE

The Blackwood mansion had never felt so empty.

Not because there were fewer people.

Not because the rooms were silent.

But because the one person who made the house feel alive was gone.

Elena.

For three days, Adrian did not leave his office.

The most powerful man in Chicago sat alone surrounded by information.

Documents.

Reports.

Photographs.

Every piece of Elena's past he could find.

But the more he searched…

The less he understood.

Because every piece of evidence created another question.

Marcus stood across from him.

"Boss."

Adrian didn't answer.

"You need to eat."

Nothing.

"You need to sleep."

Still nothing.

Finally, Marcus sighed.

"You need to talk to her."

Adrian looked up.

His eyes were exhausted.

"I don't know what to say."

Marcus frowned.

"You love her."

"Yes."

"Then say that."

Adrian looked away.

"It's not that simple."

Marcus knew something important.

Adrian Blackwood could face enemies without fear.

He could walk into dangerous situations alone.

He could negotiate with people who wanted him dead.

But when it came to Elena…

He became afraid.

Because she was the only person who could truly hurt him.

Meanwhile…

Elena stayed at a small house outside the city.

The same house Adrian had bought for her months ago.

The place he called:

"A place that belongs only to you."

She sat by the window.

Her hand resting on her stomach.

Thinking.

Remembering.

She remembered the first time Adrian told her he loved her.

Not after learning who she was.

Not after discovering her family's history.

Before everything.

When she was just Elena.

A woman without power.

A woman without a name.

"I don't understand why you are doing this."

She whispered.

"Why are you letting her words hurt us?"

A tear rolled down her cheek.

Because the most painful part was not Victoria's attack.

It was Adrian's silence.

But Elena also knew something.

She had made a mistake.

She had hidden something.

Not because she wanted to deceive him.

Because she was afraid.

And fear could create secrets.

The truth was simple.

Before meeting Adrian…

Elena had discovered something about her birth family.

A connection to the Carter Foundation.

A powerful organization once linked to Adrian's enemies.

But Elena had never been part of their actions.

She had spent her entire life running from that name.

She changed her identity.

She built her own life.

She became Elena Carter.

Not because she was ashamed.

Because she wanted to be judged for herself.

But Victoria had twisted the truth.

She made it look like Elena had entered Adrian's life with a hidden plan.

And that was the lie.

The lie that was breaking everything.

One week later…

Adrian finally went to see her.

Elena opened the door.

For a moment…

Neither spoke.

They just looked at each other.

The distance between them felt impossible.

"You look tired."

Her voice was soft.

"So do you."

A painful silence.

Then Adrian spoke.

"I miss you."

Her eyes moved slightly.

Because she missed him too.

More than she wanted to admit.

"Then why are you here?"

He looked down.

"Because I need the truth."

She nodded slowly.

"I knew you would say that."

"Elena..."

"No."

She looked at him.

"Please."

A pause.

"Let me say something first."

Adrian remained silent.

"I understand why you are confused."

She took a breath.

"I understand why Victoria's words affected you."

Her voice became quieter.

"But what hurts..."

She touched her chest.

"Is that you believed her before believing me."

Adrian looked away.

Because that was the truth.

"I never wanted to lie to you."

"Then why didn't you tell me?"

"Because I was afraid."

"Of me?"

"No."

She shook her head.

"Of losing you."

Adrian's expression softened.

But the pain remained.

"Elena, I need to know everything."

She nodded.

"You deserve that."

She finally told him.

Everything.

About her biological family.

About the Carter name.

About the reason she hid her past.

About the fear she carried.

"My father was not a good man."

Adrian listened carefully.

"He was connected to powerful people."

A pause.

"People who hurt others."

She looked at him.

"But I was a child. I had no part in that."

"I know."

"You know?"

He nodded.

"Yes."

She looked surprised.

"Then why?"

Adrian was quiet.

Because the answer was difficult.

"Because I was afraid."

The words surprised her.

"You?"

He gave a bitter smile.

"Yes."

A pause.

"I spent my whole life believing people wanted something from me."

He looked at her.

"And then you came."

His voice softened.

"You wanted nothing."

"You didn't care about my money."

"You didn't care about my name."

"You saw me."

A tear appeared in Elena's eyes.

"Then why did you doubt me?"

Adrian had no answer.

Because love did not always remove fear.

Sometimes it made fear stronger.

Before he could respond…

A message arrived on his phone.

Marcus.

Urgent.

Adrian opened it.

His expression changed.

"What happened?"

He turned the screen.

A news article.

The headline:

BLACKWOOD HEIR SECRETLY CONNECTED TO CRIMINAL DYNASTY — FAMILY IN DANGER?

Elena's face went pale.

"No."

Adrian immediately knew.

Victoria.

Within hours, the story spread everywhere.

Business partners called.

Investors questioned.

The media attacked.

The Blackwood name was being damaged.

Adrian returned to the mansion.

The board demanded answers.

The family demanded explanations.

Everyone wanted to know one thing:

Who was Elena Carter?

Charles Blackwood stood during the family meeting.

"I warned you."

Adrian looked at him.

"About what?"

"About bringing outsiders into this family."

His eyes moved coldly.

"Your wife has put everything at risk."

Adrian's hand tightened.

But before he could answer…

The doors opened.

Elena entered.

Everyone turned.

She walked slowly.

Not like a victim.

Not like someone begging for acceptance.

Like the woman she had always been.

Strong.

Calm.

"I understand why you are afraid."

Everyone became silent.

"But I will not apologize for being born."

A pause.

"I will not apologize for my family's mistakes."

She looked at Adrian.

"And I will not apologize for loving my husband."

The room was silent.

Even Charles had no response.

Then Victoria appeared on the screen.

A live video.

Everyone froze.

"Hello, Blackwood family."

Her smile was cruel.

"I thought you deserved to know the truth."

She pressed a button.

A document appeared.

A marriage record.

But not Adrian and Elena's.

Another one.

Elena froze.

Adrian noticed.

"What is that?"

Her face lost all color.

Because she knew.

She knew exactly what Victoria had found.

Victoria smiled.

"Adrian..."

A pause.

"Ask your wife why she never told you she was already married."

The room exploded with silence.

Adrian turned toward Elena.

And for the first time…

He didn't know what to believe.

Elena whispered:

"That's not true."

But the damage was already done.

Because the document was real.

The signature was real.

The date was real.

And Adrian Blackwood was looking at proof of the one thing he never thought possible.

A lie.

A secret.

A betrayal.

The woman he loved…

May you like

May have been someone else's wife before she became his.
