CHAPTER 5

THE PREGNANT WOMAN WHO NEVER COMPLAINED

People always misunderstood Elena Carter Blackwood.

They thought her silence meant weakness.

They thought her patience meant she could be pushed aside.

They thought because she lowered her head…

She had no strength.

They were wrong.

Elena's silence was not because she was powerless.

It was because she had spent her entire life learning how to survive without needing anyone to save her.

But Adrian Blackwood was about to discover something that would break his heart.

The woman who protected everyone…

Had been protecting herself alone.

The morning after the archive room was broken into, Adrian barely slept.

He sat in his office surrounded by documents.

Not business reports.

Not company contracts.

Elena's life.

Every piece of information he could find.

Her childhood.

Her family.

Her struggles.

Every moment he had missed.

Every sign he ignored.

And the more he learned…

The more furious he became.

Not at Elena.

At himself.

Marcus entered quietly.

"Mr. Blackwood."

Adrian didn't look up.

"What did you find?"

Marcus placed a folder on the desk.

"Security reports from the mansion over the last six months."

Adrian opened it.

His expression slowly changed.

"What is this?"

"Complaints."

"Against who?"

Marcus hesitated.

"Mrs. Blackwood."

Adrian looked up sharply.

"Against Elena?"

Marcus nodded.

"Not official complaints."

He corrected himself.

"More like comments from staff."

Adrian continued reading.

The first report.

Mrs. Carter was rude and refused instructions.

The second.

Mrs. Carter should remember she is only temporary staff.

The third.

Mrs. Carter was warned not to enter certain areas of the house.

Adrian's hands tightened.

Temporary staff.

That was how they saw his wife.

"Who wrote these?"

Marcus gave him the names.

Adrian immediately recognized several.

People who had worked in the mansion for years.

People he trusted.

People who had eaten at his table.

People who had looked Elena in the eye every day and treated her like she was nothing.

"Why didn't she tell me?"

Marcus looked away.

"Because she knew what you would do."

Adrian was silent.

Because he knew exactly.

If Elena had told him someone insulted her…

Those people would have been gone immediately.

And Elena never wanted revenge.

She wanted truth.

Adrian stood.

"Where is she?"

"In the garden."

He found Elena sitting beneath the old oak tree.

She was reading a book.

One hand resting on her stomach.

A peaceful image.

A heartbreaking image.

Because Adrian now knew.

She had sat there alone many times.

While people inside the house judged her.

While he was busy protecting an empire…

She was fighting a battle inside his own home.

"You should be resting."

Elena looked up.

She smiled.

"That's what you always say."

"And you never listen."

She laughed softly.

But Adrian didn't smile.

She noticed immediately.

"What happened?"

He sat beside her.

"How long?"

She became quiet.

"Adrian..."

"How long did they treat you this way?"

Silence.

Then:

"Since I arrived."

His chest tightened.

"Since we moved here?"

She nodded.

"Why?"

The question came out broken.

Not angry.

Confused.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

Elena looked at him.

"Because I knew you."

A pause.

"You would destroy everyone who hurt me."

"And they deserve it."

"No."

Her voice was gentle.

"But that is not the man I fell in love with."

Adrian looked away.

Because she always did that.

She saw the person beneath the monster.

Even when he struggled to see himself.

"Tell me everything."

Elena hesitated.

Then slowly began.

"The first month after we married..."

She looked down.

"They thought I trapped you."

Adrian froze.

"What?"

"They said I was using you."

Her voice remained calm.

But her eyes revealed the pain.

"They said a woman like me could never belong beside you."

Adrian remembered.

The first months of their marriage.

He was constantly away.

Business.

Meetings.

Threats.

He thought Elena was adjusting.

He never realized she was suffering.

"They made me clean the guest rooms."

Her voice became quieter.

"They told me it would remind me where I came from."

Adrian's face darkened.

"Elena."

She continued.

"I didn't mind the work."

A pause.

"I minded that they believed the work made me less."

His hand found hers.

"Who?"

She looked at him.

"Does it matter now?"

"Yes."

His voice was cold.

"Because they hurt my wife."

Elena looked at him.

Then at their joined hands.

"I was pregnant."

The words stopped him.

"What?"

She smiled sadly.

"When Victoria attacked me, that wasn't the first time someone made me feel small."

A tear appeared.

"I was already carrying our baby."

Adrian felt like the air disappeared.

She had been pregnant.

Working.

Being insulted.

Being treated like a stranger.

And she never complained.

"Why did you hide how difficult it was?"

Elena touched his face.

"Because you were fighting your own battles."

A pause.

"I didn't want to become another problem you had to solve."

Those words destroyed him more than any enemy could.

Because Elena never saw herself as someone worthy of being protected.

She only saw herself as someone who had to endure.

That night, Adrian made a decision.

Not out of anger.

Not out of revenge.

Out of love.

The entire mansion staff gathered again.

But this time, Elena stood beside Adrian.

Everyone could see something was different.

Adrian's expression was calm.

Too calm.

"Today, I learned something."

Nobody spoke.

"I learned that some people inside this house forgot the meaning of respect."

His eyes moved across the room.

"My wife was treated like an employee."

Silence.

"She was insulted."

Silence.

"Humiliated."

Silence.

"And she never complained."

Several servants lowered their heads.

Adrian continued.

"Do you know why?"

Nobody answered.

"Because she was kinder than all of you."

An older servant stepped forward.

"Mr. Blackwood, we apologize."

Adrian looked at him.

"An apology does not erase months of cruelty."

The man's face fell.

"But people can change."

Adrian paused.

Then looked at Elena.

She nodded slightly.

That was enough.

"Anyone who cannot respect my wife..."

Adrian said.

"Cannot remain in this house."

By the end of the day, several employees were dismissed.

But Adrian did not feel satisfied.

Because punishment did not change what happened.

It only proved how much Elena had endured.

Later that night, Adrian found Elena preparing a small baby room.

He stood at the doorway.

Watching her.

She was folding tiny clothes.

Smiling.

A smile she deserved to have months ago.

"You should have told me."

She looked back.

"I know."

"I should have protected you."

She walked toward him.

"You are protecting me now."

"But I failed before."

Elena shook her head.

"No."

She touched his heart.

"You were learning."

Adrian pulled her into his arms.

Carefully.

As if she were something precious.

"I promise you."

His voice was quiet.

"No one will ever make you feel like you don't belong again."

But neither of them knew…

Someone else had been watching.

From a distance.

Victoria Laurent had seen everything.

She saw Adrian's love.

She saw Elena's strength.

And she understood something terrifying.

Destroying their marriage would not be easy.

Because Adrian did not love Elena because of her name.

He loved her because of who she was.

Victoria looked at the screen.

Then at the stolen file.

"The secret alone won't break them."

She whispered.

"So I'll have to take away something else."

A cold smile appeared.

"Their trust."

And far away from the Blackwood mansion…

A plan was already beginning.

May you like

A plan designed to make Adrian question the only person he had ever trusted.
