CHAPTER 10 — THE SECRET CAMILA NEVER KNEW

CHAPTER 10 — THE SECRET CAMILA NEVER KNEW

The room went silent.

Elena stared at Lucia.

Then at Julian.

Then at Adrian.

Her mind refused to accept what her daughter had just said.

“He looked exactly like Daddy.”

Julian's face had lost all color.

“I don't have a twin.”

Adrian slowly descended the final step.

“No.”

His voice was quiet.

“You don't.”

Julian turned toward him.

“Then who was he?”

Adrian didn't answer.

Instead, he looked at Elena.

“You finally remembered enough.”

Elena shook her head.

“No. I remember nothing.”

“You will.”

“I remember Julian.”

Adrian's expression hardened.

“You remember the man they wanted you to remember.”

Julian stepped between them.

“Stop speaking in riddles.”

Adrian looked directly into his eyes.

“You've been asking the wrong question for nine years.”

“Then answer it.”

“Who is Julian Rossi?”

Julian froze.

Elena felt her stomach tighten.

Adrian continued.

“Not the name.”

“The man.”

THE SECOND JULIAN

Adrian walked toward an old cabinet.

He opened a drawer.

Inside were photographs.

Dozens of them.

Elena recognized Julian immediately.

At parties.

At business meetings.

At university.

At their wedding.

But then Adrian placed two photographs beside each other.

Elena stared.

The men looked identical.

Same face.

Same eyes.

Same jaw.

Same scar above the right eyebrow.

But Elena noticed something.

One man wore a wedding ring.

The other didn't.

She picked up the second photograph.

“When were these taken?”

“Eight years ago.”

“Where?”

“Outside the old clinic.”

Elena's fingers trembled.

Julian looked at the photograph.

“That isn't me.”

Adrian nodded.

“I know.”

“Who is he?”

Adrian looked at Elena.

“His name was Daniel Rossi.”

Julian's face changed.

“Rossi?”

“Yes.”

“My family?”

“Your father's family.”

Julian shook his head.

“There was no Daniel.”

“There was.”

“Why didn't I know him?”

“Because your father erased him.”

Elena stared at the photograph.

“Why?”

Adrian's eyes became cold.

“Because Daniel was the legitimate heir.”

THE HEIR THEY ERASED

Elena felt the room tilt.

“Legitimate heir to what?”

“The Rossi fortune.”

Julian stared.

“What are you talking about?”

Adrian placed another document on the table.

It was an old birth record.

DANIEL ALEXANDER ROSSI.

Then another.

JULIAN ALEXANDER ROSSI.

Elena looked between them.

“Twins?”

Adrian nodded.

Julian's hands began trembling.

“My father told me I was an only child.”

“He told everyone that.”

“Why?”

“Because Daniel was born first.”

Julian stared at the birth certificate.

“What happened to him?”

Adrian's expression darkened.

“He disappeared at age seven.”

Elena looked at him.

“Disappeared?”

“Your father claimed Daniel died.”

“But he didn't.”

“No.”

“Where was he?”

Adrian looked toward the old house.

“Your father sent him away.”

“Why?”

“Because Daniel had inherited something.”

Julian swallowed.

“What?”

“The original Rossi trust.”

THE SECRET TRUST

Elena looked at the documents.

“The contract.”

Adrian nodded.

“The contract you found beneath the mansion was not the first agreement.”

“What was the first?”

“A private succession agreement between your grandfather and the Rossi family.”

Julian stepped forward.

“Why wasn't it in the archives?”

“Because your father destroyed the original.”

“Then how do you have it?”

Adrian smiled bitterly.

“Because I stole it before he could.”

Elena took the document.

Her eyes moved across the page.

Then stopped.

The designated heir was not Julian.

It was Daniel.

She looked up.

“So everything…”

“Was built around replacing him.”

Julian stared at the paper.

“My entire life…”

“Was constructed to make you believe you were the rightful heir.”

Julian stepped backward.

“Why would my father do that?”

Adrian answered:

“Because Daniel was inconvenient.”

THE NIGHT DANIEL DIED

Julian's voice shook.

“Where is he now?”

Adrian didn't answer.

“Where is Daniel?”

“Elena,” Adrian said quietly, “you need to understand what happened at the clinic.”

She turned toward him.

“I want the truth.”

“You were pregnant.”

“Yes.”

“Your daughter was born.”

“Yes.”

“Daniel was there.”

Julian looked at him.

“Why?”

“Because he knew the child carried his family's future.”

Elena frowned.

“What does that mean?”

Adrian looked at her.

“Lucia was not merely the beneficiary of your family's trust.”

“She was the key to Daniel's claim.”

Julian's expression hardened.

“But Lucia isn't Daniel's daughter.”

“No.”

Adrian paused.

“She was Daniel's protection.”

Elena stared.

“What?”

“Your father needed Daniel's claim to disappear.”

“So he used Lucia?”

“Yes.”

“He took my daughter to protect himself?”

“No.”

Adrian's voice became colder.

“He took your daughter because Daniel was trying to save her.”

CAMILA

Across the city, Camila sat alone in the dark.

Her wrists were bruised.

Her phone had been taken.

She had no idea where she was.

But she knew one thing.

Elena had found Lucia.

And that meant the secret Camila had spent years carrying could no longer remain buried.

She closed her eyes.

She remembered the first time she met Alejandro.

She had been twenty-four.

Poor.

Desperate.

Working in a hotel bar.

He approached her after midnight.

“You're ambitious.”

Camila laughed.

“I need money.”

“I can give you money.”

“How much?”

“Enough to change your life.”

“What do you want?”

Alejandro slid a photograph across the table.

A young woman.

Elena.

“She is my daughter.”

Camila looked at him.

“And?”

“I need you to become her friend.”

Camila frowned.

“Why?”

“Because she trusts women more than men.”

“What exactly am I supposed to do?”

“Watch her.”

“That's all?”

“No.”

Alejandro's eyes hardened.

“When the time comes, I need you to make sure she never discovers the truth.”

THE FIRST LIE

Camila remembered asking:

“What truth?”

Alejandro had smiled.

“That she's carrying a child.”

Camila had stared at him.

“You want me to hurt a pregnant woman?”

“No.”

“I don't understand.”

“You won't.”

He gave her another photograph.

A newborn baby.

Camila's stomach twisted.

“Whose child?”

“Lucia.”

“What do you want me to do?”

“Nothing.”

He paused.

“Until I tell you.”

Camila had accepted the money.

She told herself it was temporary.

She told herself she wasn't hurting anyone.

Then she met Elena.

And Elena became her friend.

Her best friend.

That was the part Camila had never expected.

Elena trusted her.

Invited her into her home.

Told her secrets.

Cried in front of her.

And one night, Elena whispered:

“I think my father is hiding something from me.”

Camila remembered that moment.

She had known.

She had known exactly what he was hiding.

But she said:

“Don't worry.”

And that was the first betrayal.

THE SECRET CAMILA NEVER KNEW

The door opened.

Alejandro entered.

Camila looked up.

“You're too late.”

He ignored her.

“Where is Elena?”

“I don't know.”

“You know.”

“I won't tell you.”

Alejandro smiled.

“You're still protecting her?”

Camila stared at him.

“No.”

He frowned.

“Then who?”

“Lucia.”

His expression changed.

“You've become sentimental.”

“No.”

Camila shook her head.

“I've finally understood what you were doing.”

“What?”

“You never wanted the empire.”

Alejandro's eyes narrowed.

“You wanted something else.”

“What?”

“Revenge.”

He said nothing.

Camila continued.

“You destroyed your own family.”

“Careful.”

“You separated Elena from her mother.”

Silence.

“You stole her daughter.”

“Enough.”

“You ruined Julian.”

Alejandro stepped closer.

“You don't know what you're talking about.”

Camila laughed bitterly.

“I know more than you think.”

He grabbed her arm.

“Where is Lucia?”

Camila looked directly at him.

“You don't even know who Lucia's father is.”

Alejandro froze.

“What?”

Camila smiled.

“That secret was never part of your plan.”

THE REAL FATHER

Back at the old estate, Elena stared at Adrian.

“Who is Lucia's father?”

Adrian looked at Julian.

“Not Daniel.”

“Then who?”

Adrian took a breath.

“The answer is inside the DNA report.”

Elena frowned.

“There was no legitimate DNA report.”

“Exactly.”

He handed her a file.

She opened it.

The first page looked familiar.

PATERNITY ANALYSIS — JULIAN ROSSI.

But beneath it was another page.

A second test.

Different laboratory.

Different date.

Different result.

PATERNITY EXCLUDED.

Elena's heart stopped.

Julian stared.

“No.”

Adrian nodded.

“You are not Lucia's biological father.”

Julian looked at Elena.

She couldn't speak.

Then Adrian handed her one more page.

PATERNITY MATCH: 99.98%.

The father's name was blacked out.

Elena looked at Adrian.

“Why is his name hidden?”

“Because the man who ordered the test wanted the result buried.”

“Who?”

Adrian's expression changed.

“Camila.”

Elena froze.

“Camila?”

“Yes.”

CAMILA'S LAST SECRET

The old phone on the table suddenly rang.

Adrian answered.

A man's voice spoke rapidly.

He listened.

Then handed the phone to Elena.

“It's Camila.”

Elena grabbed it.

“Where are you?”

“Locked somewhere.”

“Did you order the DNA test?”

Silence.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because I needed to know.”

“Know what?”

“Who Lucia belonged to.”

Elena closed her eyes.

“Who is her father?”

Camila began crying.

“I don't know.”

“What?”

“I only saw the result.”

“Then tell me the result.”

“I can't.”

“Why?”

“Because the name wasn't there.”

Elena's heart pounded.

“What do you mean?”

“The laboratory report had been altered.”

“By whom?”

“I don't know.”

Camila's voice shook.

“But I saw the original.”

“What did it say?”

Silence.

Then:

“Your father's name.”

Elena froze.

“What?”

“Lucia's biological father…”

Camila whispered:

“Was Alejandro.”

Elena's face went white.

“No.”

Julian stared at her.

Adrian stepped forward.

Camila continued:

“But that's impossible.”

“Why?”

“Because I found another file.”

“What file?”

“A medical record.”

Her voice broke.

“The blood type didn't match.”

Elena's heart raced.

“Then what are you saying?”

Camila whispered:

“Someone deliberately created a false DNA result to make us believe Lucia was Alejandro's daughter.”

Silence.

Elena's mind raced.

“Then whose daughter is she?”

“I don't know.”

“You're lying.”

“I swear.”

Camila began sobbing.

“There was one name attached to the original laboratory request.”

“Whose?”

Camila whispered:

“Vale.”

Adrian's expression changed.

Elena looked at him.

“Adrian?”

He shook his head.

“No.”

“Then who?”

Adrian's face had gone pale.

“There was another Vale.”

Elena stared.

“Who?”

Adrian looked toward the window.

“My brother.”

THE BROTHER

The room fell silent.

Julian stared at him.

“You have a brother?”

“I did.”

“What was his name?”

Adrian closed his eyes.

“Samuel.”

Elena felt a chill.

“Where is he?”

“Dead.”

“When?”

“The night you disappeared.”

Julian's face hardened.

“Was he at the clinic?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“He came for Lucia.”

“Why?”

Adrian looked at Elena.

“Because she was his daughter.”

Elena stopped breathing.

“No.”

Adrian nodded.

“Samuel was the biological father of Lucia.”

Julian looked stunned.

“But how?”

Adrian's eyes met Elena's.

“You knew him.”

Elena shook her head.

“I never met him.”

“You did.”

“When?”

“Before your marriage.”

Elena's memories flashed again.

A man.

A summer night.

A vineyard.

A blue shirt.

A laugh.

A promise.

She suddenly remembered.

Her hand flew to her mouth.

“Sam.”

Adrian nodded.

“Samuel.”

Elena staggered backward.

“I knew him.”

“Yes.”

“He was…”

“Your first love.”

Julian's face went pale.

Elena looked at him.

She remembered everything.

The secret meetings.

The letters.

The night she told Samuel she was pregnant.

Then her father discovering them.

And the threat.

If you marry him, I'll destroy him.

Elena had believed Samuel left her.

But he hadn't.

He had been murdered.

And Lucia had been taken.

THE NIGHT EVERYTHING CHANGED

Adrian spoke quietly.

“Samuel came to the clinic the night Lucia was born.”

“He knew?”

“Yes.”

“He wanted his daughter.”

“Yes.”

“Then what happened?”

“Your father confronted him.”

Elena's eyes filled with tears.

“Did they fight?”

“Yes.”

“Who killed Samuel?”

Adrian looked at Julian.

“Victor Rossi.”

Julian froze.

“My grandfather.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because Samuel had proof.”

“Proof of what?”

“That the Rossi family had stolen the original trust.”

Adrian paused.

“And that Lucia was the true heir.”

Elena looked at the contract.

Everything suddenly made sense.

Samuel had been killed.

Lucia had been hidden.

Elena's memory had been erased.

The money had been moved.

The DNA records had been falsified.

And Julian had been placed in the position of heir.

All because one little girl carried the bloodline that could expose everything.

THE WOMAN WHO CHOSE TO RETURN

Camila suddenly appeared on the estate's security monitor.

She was standing outside.

Blood on her lip.

She had escaped.

Elena rushed toward the door.

“Camila!”

Adrian stopped her.

“Wait.”

Camila looked directly at the camera.

“I know where the money is.”

Elena froze.

Camila continued:

“I know where Samuel's evidence is.”

Julian stepped closer.

“And I know who ordered his murder.”

Elena stared.

“Who?”

Camila looked toward the darkness behind her.

Then whispered:

“Not Alejandro.”

A shadow moved behind her.

Camila turned.

Her eyes widened.

The screen went black.

Elena screamed:

“Camila!”

Marcus rushed toward the door.

But Elena grabbed his arm.

“Where did she go?”

“I don't know.”

“Find her.”

“We will.”

“No.”

Elena looked at him.

“Find her now.”

THE FINAL MESSAGE

Ten minutes later, Camila's phone was found in the driveway.

The screen was cracked.

One message remained unsent.

Elena opened it.

It contained a photograph.

A bank account.

A location.

And one sentence:

THE MONEY IS IN SAMUEL VALE'S NAME.

Elena stared.

Julian whispered:

“Samuel's dead.”

Marcus looked at the screen.

“Then someone has been using his identity.”

Adrian's expression became grim.

“Not someone.”

Elena looked at him.

“Who?”

He pointed toward the photograph.

“The man who killed him.”

A second message appeared.

COME ALONE, ELENA.

Then another.

BRING THE CONTRACT.

And finally:

IF YOU WANT TO KNOW WHO LUCIA'S REAL FATHER IS, COME TO THE PLACE WHERE SAMUEL DIED.

Elena stared at the words.

Julian stepped beside her.

“You're not going alone.”

She looked at him.

“For the first time in nine years…”

Her voice trembled.

“I don't know whether I can trust you.”

Julian accepted the words without protest.

“I know.”

Elena looked at Lucia.

Then at the photograph of Samuel.

Then at the account containing eighty-four million dollars.

Someone had been moving money through the dead man's identity.

Someone had manipulated two families.

Someone had altered DNA records.

Someone had stolen Elena's daughter.

And someone had known the truth from the very beginning.

Elena finally understood the most terrifying part.

The conspiracy wasn't ending.

It was getting closer.

Because the woman she had once trusted most had betrayed her.

The man she had married might not be the man she thought he was.

Her father had lied.

Her mother had disappeared.

And the money that vanished had been waiting all along for one person to claim it.

Lucia.

Elena closed her fist around the contract.

“Take me to Samuel's grave.”

Adrian looked at her.

“You're ready?”

“No.”

She looked at Lucia.

“But I'm done waiting.”

Outside, thunder rolled across the sky.

And somewhere in the darkness, the person who had orchestrated the entire conspiracy made one final call.

“She's coming.”

A pause.

Then a man's voice answered:

“Good.”

“Should we stop her?”

“No.”

“Why?”

The man smiled.

“Because Elena still doesn't know the truth about the night she disappeared.”

He looked at an old photograph.

A young Elena.

A young Samuel.

And a newborn baby.

Then he whispered:

“Let her come.”

“Because when she sees who was holding Lucia that night…”

May you like

A cold smile crossed his face.

“…she'll finally understand why she was never supposed to remember.”
