CHAPTER 4 — THE MISTRESS IN THE PENTHOUSE

CHAPTER 4 — THE MISTRESS IN THE PENTHOUSE

The black car stopped beneath the golden lights of the Azure Crown.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Elena stood behind the glass doors.

Julian stood beside her.

And outside, Marcus Villeneuve looked directly at them.

He didn't knock.

He didn't wave.

He simply stood there as though he had all the time in the world.

Then he turned and walked away.

Elena's heart hammered.

“Why did he leave?”

Julian didn't answer.

She turned toward him.

“You said he called you.”

“I did.”

“What did he want?”

“I don't know.”

“You're lying again.”

Julian looked exhausted.

“Elena, I swear I don't know what Marcus is planning.”

She studied him.

For the first time, she noticed how frightened he looked.

Not angry.

Not arrogant.

Afraid.

Then her phone buzzed.

A message.

COME TO THE PENTHOUSE. ALONE.

Elena looked at Julian.

“Who sent that?”

He shook his head.

“I don't know.”

She looked at the screen again.

Another message appeared.

CAMI HAS SOMETHING YOU NEED TO SEE.

Elena's blood ran cold.

Camila.

The mistress.

The woman who had worn her grandmother's emerald.

The woman Julian had chosen over her.

The woman Elena now knew had been placed in his life deliberately.

She slipped the phone into her pocket.

“I'll go.”

Julian grabbed her wrist.

“No.”

Elena looked down at his hand.

“Let go.”

“I don't want you going there.”

“Why?”

“Because I don't trust her.”

Elena pulled her wrist free.

“Neither do I.”

She walked toward the elevator.

Julian followed.

“Elena.”

She turned.

“If you know something, tell me now.”

He hesitated.

That hesitation was enough.

She stepped inside the elevator.

The doors closed between them.

And as she rose toward the penthouse, Elena realized something terrifying.

Camila wasn't calling her there to apologize.

She was calling her there because she was afraid.

THE PENTHOUSE

The elevator opened silently.

Elena stepped out.

The penthouse was dark.

No music.

No television.

No city lights except those coming through the enormous windows.

She walked forward.

“Camila?”

Nothing.

Then a voice came from the living room.

“You came.”

Elena stopped.

Camila was sitting on the sofa.

She wasn't wearing Elena's robe anymore.

She wasn't wearing designer clothes.

She looked frightened.

Her face was pale.

Her hands were trembling.

Elena stared at her.

“Where is Julian?”

“He's downstairs.”

“Why did you call me?”

Camila stood.

“Because I made a mistake.”

Elena almost laughed.

“You think?”

“I didn't know.”

“Didn't know what?”

“That Julian was being watched.”

Elena's expression hardened.

“Everyone is being watched.”

“No.”

Camila shook her head.

“You don't understand.”

She reached into her handbag.

Elena instinctively stepped backward.

Camila pulled out a small black flash drive.

“This.”

“What is it?”

“Everything.”

Elena stared at it.

“What does that mean?”

“Emails. Audio recordings. Bank transfers. Messages.”

“From whom?”

Camila's eyes filled with tears.

“From the people who arranged my relationship with Julian.”

Elena went still.

“You were paid?”

Camila nodded.

“They found me almost a year before Julian did.”

“Who?”

“I never met the man directly.”

“Then who did you meet?”

“A woman.”

“Who?”

Camila swallowed.

“Her name was Vanessa.”

Elena frowned.

“That means nothing to me.”

“It will.”

Camila placed the drive on the table.

“She told me exactly what to do.”

“What?”

“Where to go.”

“How to meet Julian.”

“What clothes to wear.”

“What interests to pretend to have.”

“How to make him believe I understood him.”

Elena's stomach turned.

“You manipulated him.”

“Yes.”

“And you slept with my husband.”

Camila lowered her head.

“Yes.”

Elena's voice became cold.

“Why should I believe anything you're saying?”

“You shouldn't.”

Camila looked up.

“But you'll believe the recordings.”

THE RECORDING

Elena inserted the drive into the laptop.

A folder appeared.

PROJECT ROSSI.

Inside were dozens of files.

Dates.

Names.

Financial documents.

Photographs.

And audio recordings.

Elena opened the first.

A woman's voice filled the room.

“Julian is predictable.”

Another voice answered.

“His wife?”

“She'll eventually discover the affair.”

“When?”

“When we need her to.”

Elena's face went pale.

The voices continued.

“Camila must never tell Julian about the Villeneuve connection.”

“She knows enough to be dangerous.”

“Then keep her distracted.”

“With what?”

“Luxury.”

The recording ended.

Elena stared at the screen.

Camila whispered:

“There are more.”

She opened another.

This time, the voice was male.

Elena froze.

She knew that voice.

Her father's.

“You're certain Elena doesn't know?”

“Yes.”

“And Julian?”

“He believes the company is his.”

“Good.”

Elena slowly turned toward Camila.

“My father.”

Camila nodded.

“I told you.”

Elena closed her eyes.

She didn't want to believe it.

But there it was.

Her father's voice.

Recorded.

Clear.

Impossible to deny.

THE WOMAN IN THE MIRROR

Camila walked toward the window.

“I hated you.”

Elena looked at her.

“I know.”

“I thought you were arrogant.”

“I wasn't.”

“I know that now.”

Camila laughed bitterly.

“You had everything.”

Elena said nothing.

“You had the husband.”

“You had the money.”

“You had the family name.”

“And I thought if I took Julian from you, I'd finally become important.”

Elena looked at her.

“Did it work?”

Camila's eyes filled with tears.

“No.”

She touched the emerald pendant.

“This was supposed to make me feel powerful.”

She pulled it from her neck.

“It didn't.”

Elena stared at the necklace.

“Why did he give it to you?”

“He didn't.”

Elena frowned.

“What?”

Camila shook her head.

“Julian never bought it.”

“Then where did it come from?”

“Vanessa.”

Elena's heart sank.

“She gave it to me the night before I first met Julian.”

“Why?”

“She told me to wear it.”

“Why?”

Camila whispered:

“Because she said Julian would recognize it.”

Elena stared.

“Recognize it?”

“He did.”

“How?”

“His reaction wasn't surprise.”

Camila looked at her.

“It was fear.”

THE HIDDEN ROOM

Elena suddenly remembered something.

The penthouse had a room she had never been allowed to enter.

A small study behind the library.

Julian always kept it locked.

She walked toward it.

Camila followed.

“Elena, don't.”

“Why?”

“I've never been inside.”

“Then how do you know?”

“Because Vanessa told me never to go near it.”

Elena stopped.

“Why?”

Camila shook her head.

“I don't know.”

Elena opened the door.

Locked.

She tried the handle again.

Nothing.

Then she remembered the key her grandmother had given her.

The black key.

Number 17.

She pulled it from her pocket.

Camila stared.

“What is that?”

“I don't know.”

Elena inserted it into the lock.

Click.

The door opened.

Both women froze.

Inside was a room filled with files.

Hundreds of them.

Photographs.

Contracts.

Bank statements.

Maps.

And photographs of Elena.

Not recent photographs.

Old ones.

From childhood.

University.

Her wedding.

Her honeymoon.

Her pregnancy.

Elena stared in horror.

Someone had been documenting her life.

For decades.

Camila whispered:

“Why would they have all this?”

Elena didn't answer.

Then she saw something on the desk.

A photograph.

Julian.

Camila.

Her father.

And Marcus.

Standing together.

Years before Camila had ever met Julian.

Elena picked it up.

Her hands shook.

“This is impossible.”

Camila looked over her shoulder.

“That's Marcus.”

“Yes.”

“And that's your father.”

“Yes.”

“And Julian.”

“Yes.”

Camila's face drained of color.

“Then they've known each other for years.”

Elena turned the photograph over.

There was a date.

ELEVEN YEARS AGO.

One year before Elena married Julian.

Beneath it was a handwritten note.

PHASE TWO: MARRIAGE.

Elena's breath caught.

Her marriage had been planned.

THE WOMAN WHO PLANNED IT

Elena found another file.

ELENA VILLENEUVE — MARRIAGE STRATEGY.

Inside were pages describing her.

Her habits.

Her preferences.

Her friendships.

Her vulnerabilities.

Even the restaurants she liked.

One page made Elena stop.

TARGET: EMOTIONAL ATTACHMENT

PRIMARY METHOD: JULIAN ROSSI

She felt sick.

Julian hadn't simply met her.

He had been selected.

Camila whispered:

“You're saying your marriage was arranged?”

Elena shook her head.

“No.”

She looked at the documents.

“Something worse.”

“What?”

“They didn't arrange my marriage.”

Elena looked at the final page.

“They arranged Julian.”

THE VIDEO

A laptop in the corner suddenly powered on.

Both women jumped.

A video began playing automatically.

Julian appeared on screen.

He looked younger.

Perhaps twenty-eight.

He was sitting across from someone Elena couldn't see.

A man's voice spoke.

“You understand your role?”

Julian nodded.

“Yes.”

“You will marry Elena.”

“Yes.”

“You will gain access to the family.”

“Yes.”

“You will not fall in love with her.”

Julian hesitated.

“I understand.”

Elena's heart stopped.

She knew what came next.

The man asked:

“And if she discovers the truth?”

Julian answered:

“Then I'll do whatever is necessary.”

The video ended.

Elena stood frozen.

Camila looked at her.

“Elena…”

She couldn't speak.

She had spent nine years believing Julian had fallen in love with her.

But perhaps he had never chosen her.

Perhaps he had been assigned to her.

Then footsteps sounded in the hallway.

Both women turned.

Julian stood in the doorway.

His face was white.

He had heard everything.

Elena looked at him.

“You knew.”

Julian swallowed.

“Not everything.”

“You knew enough.”

He stepped forward.

“Elena, listen to me.”

“No.”

“I was young.”

“You married me for my family.”

“Yes.”

“You lied to me.”

“Yes.”

“You used me.”

“Yes.”

“You slept with her.”

He looked at Camila.

Then back at Elena.

“Yes.”

Elena's eyes filled with tears.

“But you loved me.”

Julian's face collapsed.

“That was the one thing they didn't plan.”

Silence.

Elena whispered:

“When?”

“When what?”

“When did you start loving me?”

Julian looked at her.

“The first time you stayed with me all night when my mother died.”

Elena remembered.

She had sat beside him until morning.

He had cried in her arms.

She had thought that was the moment they became husband and wife.

Apparently, it was the moment the plan began to fail.

Julian stepped closer.

“I was supposed to betray you.”

“You did.”

“I know.”

“You still betrayed me.”

“I know.”

“Then why are you telling me?”

“Because they're going to kill you.”

Elena froze.

“Who?”

Julian's voice dropped.

“Everyone involved.”

THE LAST SECRET

Camila suddenly screamed.

“Elena!”

She pointed toward the laptop.

A new message had appeared.

YOU WERE NEVER SUPPOSED TO FIND THE ROOM.

Then another.

LEAVE THE PENTHOUSE NOW.

Then:

YOU HAVE FIVE MINUTES.

The lights went out.

The elevator stopped.

The doors locked.

A smell of smoke filled the hallway.

Camila panicked.

“Fire!”

Julian ran toward the door.

Locked.

He slammed his shoulder against it.

“Get back!”

He hit it again.

Nothing.

Elena grabbed the files.

“Julian!”

He turned.

“Take the documents!”

“Why?”

“Because they're the only proof we have!”

Another explosion shook the building.

Glass shattered somewhere below.

Smoke poured into the penthouse.

Julian grabbed Elena's hand.

Camila followed.

They ran toward the private emergency staircase.

Behind them, flames began crawling across the curtains.

As they reached the stairs, Elena looked back.

The penthouse.

Her former home.

The place where Julian had brought Camila.

The place where she had discovered the truth.

It was burning.

Julian pulled her forward.

“Don't look back!”

They ran downward through the smoke.

Then Elena heard something.

A voice.

From somewhere inside the burning penthouse.

A man's voice.

Calm.

Almost amused.

“Run, Elena.”

She stopped.

Julian grabbed her.

“What are you doing?”

Elena stared into the flames.

She recognized the voice.

It was the same voice from the recording.

The same voice that had orchestrated her marriage.

The same voice that had controlled Julian.

And now she finally knew whose voice it was.

Her father's.

Elena whispered:

“Dad…”

The building shook again.

Julian pulled her down the stairs.

Behind them, the penthouse windows exploded.

Flames roared into the night.

And Elena understood the most terrifying truth of all.

Her father hadn't merely known about the conspiracy.

He had been part of it.

For nine years, he had watched her marriage from the shadows.

And if the evidence in that penthouse was destroyed—

the truth about who really controlled the Villeneuve empire might disappear forever.

But Elena had taken one thing with her.

The black key.

Number 17.

She closed her hand around it.

Because somewhere beneath the original Villeneuve resort was a vault.

And inside that vault was the one thing every person in her family had spent decades trying to hide.

The original ownership records.

The names of every conspirator.

May you like

And perhaps—

the reason her father had sacrificed his own daughter to protect an empire that was never supposed to belong to her in the first place.
