CHAPTER 7 — THE WOMAN WHO BETRAYED ELENA

CHAPTER 7 — THE WOMAN WHO BETRAYED ELENA

The telephone receiver remained in Marcus's hand long after the line had gone dead.

Nobody spoke.

Elena could still hear the child's voice inside her head.

Please don't tell my grandfather where I am.

She had spent years believing she knew her family.

She had believed her father was difficult but protective.

She had believed her grandmother was dead.

She had believed Julian had chosen her.

She had believed she had lost a child she had never been allowed to remember.

Every belief had been a lie.

And now an eight-year-old girl was hiding somewhere inside the empire Elena had spent nine years helping to build.

Her daughter.

Alive.

Afraid.

And apparently terrified of Alejandro.

Elena turned toward Marcus.

“Call her back.”

“I can't.”

“Why?”

“The line is dead.”

“Then find another way.”

“I don't know where she is.”

“You just heard her!”

“I heard her through a protected line.”

“Then trace it.”

Marcus's expression hardened.

“If I could, I would.”

Elena slammed both hands onto the table.

“You've known about this!”

“No.”

“You knew my daughter existed.”

“I knew there was a child.”

“You knew she was alive.”

“I suspected.”

“You knew enough to let me believe she was dead.”

Marcus stared at her.

“I spent twenty-six years trying to keep your family alive.”

“And my daughter?”

His voice softened.

“I didn't know where she was.”

Elena turned away.

She was furious.

At Marcus.

At Julian.

At her father.

At herself.

Most of all, she was furious at the woman who had once been the person she trusted more than anyone.

Her mother.

But her mother was dead.

Or so Elena had been told.

Then she remembered the name on one of the old files.

A signature.

A woman who had handled the family's private accounts.

A woman who had been present the night Elena was taken to the clinic.

A woman who had signed the hospital transfer papers.

Sofia Hart.

Her mother's closest friend.

Elena's godmother.

And suddenly, Elena remembered something.

Sofia had disappeared from her life the same year her daughter was born.

She had never asked why.

She had simply accepted her father's explanation.

She betrayed us.

But what if that had been another lie?

Elena turned slowly.

“Marcus.”

“Yes?”

“Where is Sofia Hart?”

Marcus's face changed.

That was all the answer she needed.

“You know.”

He said nothing.

“Where is she?”

Marcus finally whispered:

“She's alive.”

THE WOMAN WHO DISAPPEARED

Three hours later, Elena sat inside a small private plane.

Julian was beside her.

Marcus sat opposite them.

Nobody spoke.

The aircraft climbed through the clouds while Elena stared at the photograph of the little girl.

Lucia.

Eight years old.

Dark hair.

Green eyes.

The same eyes Elena saw every morning when she looked in the mirror.

She touched the photograph with one finger.

“Why didn't anyone tell me?”

Julian looked down.

“Because they were afraid.”

“Of what?”

“Of the trust.”

Elena laughed bitterly.

“Everyone keeps saying that.”

She turned toward him.

“It's money, Julian.”

“No.”

He shook his head.

“It's not just money.”

“What else could it be?”

“Control.”

Elena looked at him.

“Explain.”

Julian leaned back.

“If Lucia is legally recognized as the descendant named in the original contract, the trust becomes hers.”

“She's eight.”

“Exactly.”

“She can't control a corporation.”

“Her guardians can.”

Elena understood.

“And whoever controls her controls the empire.”

“Yes.”

She stared out the window.

“So my daughter is a crown.”

Julian nodded.

“And everyone has been fighting over who gets to hold her.”

SOFIA HART

The plane landed at a private airfield two hours later.

A black car waited.

Marcus gave the driver an address.

Elena looked at him.

“Where are we going?”

“A village near the northern coast.”

“Why there?”

“Because Sofia has been hiding there for six years.”

Elena's chest tightened.

“Why didn't she contact me?”

Marcus looked away.

“Because she was afraid.”

“Of my father?”

“Yes.”

“And she knew about Lucia?”

“Yes.”

“Then she betrayed me.”

Marcus didn't answer.

Elena stared at him.

“She did, didn't she?”

“She made a choice.”

“What choice?”

“To protect the child.”

Elena's eyes hardened.

“She left me.”

“Yes.”

“She let me believe my daughter was dead.”

“Yes.”

“She watched me grieve.”

Marcus said nothing.

Elena's voice broke.

“How can you call that protection?”

“I didn't.”

He looked at her.

“I called it survival.”

The house was tiny.

White walls.

A blue door.

A garden filled with wildflowers.

It looked nothing like the world Elena had grown up in.

She stepped out of the car.

A woman stood at the window.

She was older.

Her hair was streaked with gray.

Her face was thinner than Elena remembered.

But Elena knew her immediately.

“Sofia.”

The woman closed her eyes.

Then slowly opened the door.

“I'm sorry.”

Elena didn't move.

For several seconds, they simply stared at one another.

Then Elena whispered:

“You're alive.”

Sofia nodded.

“Yes.”

“You lied.”

“Yes.”

“You let me think my daughter was dead.”

Sofia's eyes filled with tears.

“Yes.”

Elena stepped closer.

“Why?”

Sofia looked at Julian.

Then Marcus.

Then back at Elena.

“Because your father gave me a choice.”

“What choice?”

“Lose you.”

She swallowed.

“Or lose Lucia.”

Elena's breathing stopped.

“What does that mean?”

Sofia stepped aside.

“Come inside.”

THE NIGHT OF THE HOSPITAL

Sofia placed a box on the table.

Inside were medical records.

Photographs.

Letters.

And a tiny hospital bracelet.

BABY GIRL — VILLENEUVE

Elena picked it up.

Her hands trembled.

“This is hers.”

“Yes.”

“You were there.”

“I was.”

“The night she was born.”

“Yes.”

“Tell me everything.”

Sofia sat down.

“I was your mother's closest friend. Your father trusted me.”

“He shouldn't have.”

“No.”

Sofia lowered her eyes.

“He told me you had complications after giving birth.”

Elena stared.

“I didn't.”

“No.”

“You knew.”

“Yes.”

“Then why did you help him?”

Sofia's voice broke.

“Because I was a coward.”

Elena said nothing.

Sofia continued.

“You were unconscious. Your daughter was in the neonatal unit.”

“And my father?”

“He came to me.”

“What did he say?”

“He told me the baby had to disappear.”

Elena's eyes filled with tears.

“I thought she died.”

“I know.”

“Did you tell me that?”

“No.”

“My father did.”

“Yes.”

“Then why didn't you tell me the truth?”

Sofia looked at her.

“Because he threatened my son.”

Elena froze.

“You have a son?”

Sofia nodded.

“Daniel.”

“What happened to him?”

“He was sixteen.”

Her voice became barely audible.

“Your father had him arrested for a crime he didn't commit.”

Elena's blood ran cold.

“He used your son against you.”

“Yes.”

“Did Daniel go to prison?”

“For three years.”

“Because of my father?”

“Yes.”

Elena closed her eyes.

“So you chose Lucia.”

“I chose both children.”

“What?”

Sofia leaned forward.

“I knew if I told you, your father would kill Lucia.”

Elena looked at her.

“And if you stayed silent?”

“He would eventually release my son.”

“He didn't.”

“No.”

Sofia's eyes filled with tears.

“He lied to me too.”

THE WOMAN WHO BETRAYED HER

Elena stood.

“So you betrayed me for nothing.”

Sofia began crying.

“I know.”

“You watched me mourn my daughter.”

“I know.”

“You watched me marry Julian.”

“I know.”

“You watched him destroy our marriage.”

“I know.”

“You watched me believe I was broken.”

Sofia covered her face.

“I know.”

Elena's voice shook.

“And all those years, my daughter was alive.”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

Sofia looked toward the window.

“I moved her three times.”

“Why?”

“Because people kept looking for her.”

“Who?”

“Your father.”

“Marcus?”

“No.”

“Julian's family?”

“Yes.”

“Who else?”

Sofia hesitated.

“Camila.”

Elena froze.

“Camila?”

“She knew about Lucia.”

Julian stepped forward.

“What?”

Sofia looked at him.

“Your mistress wasn't merely sent to seduce you.”

Julian's expression hardened.

“What did she know?”

“She was instructed to find the child.”

Elena's heart sank.

“Why?”

“Because they needed to know whether Lucia was alive.”

“Did she find her?”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

Sofia hesitated.

“At the Azure Crown.”

Elena remembered Camila's words.

I saw her.

Her daughter had been working inside their resort.

Right under their noses.

For years.

CAMILA'S BETRAYAL

Elena called Camila.

The call connected immediately.

“Hello?”

“Where are you?”

A pause.

“Safe.”

“That's not what I asked.”

Silence.

“You knew about Lucia.”

Another pause.

“Yes.”

“You found her.”

“Yes.”

“You knew she was my daughter.”

“Yes.”

Elena's voice became ice.

“And you never told me.”

“I was afraid.”

“Everyone is afraid.”

“Elena—”

“You worked for them.”

“Yes.”

“You searched for my daughter.”

“Yes.”

“You lied to me.”

“Yes.”

“You slept with my husband.”

Camila began crying.

“Yes.”

Elena closed her eyes.

“Why should I ever believe you again?”

“You shouldn't.”

“Then why are you calling?”

“Because I know where Lucia is now.”

Elena opened her eyes.

“Where?”

“I'll tell you.”

“Now.”

“I can't.”

“Why?”

“Because someone is here.”

“Who?”

Camila's breathing changed.

Then Elena heard another voice in the background.

A man's voice.

Cold.

Calm.

Familiar.

“Give me the phone.”

Elena froze.

It was Alejandro.

Her father.

“Dad?”

Silence.

Then he spoke.

“You shouldn't have called her.”

The line went dead.

THE WARNING

Elena stood motionless.

Julian watched her.

“What happened?”

“My father has Camila.”

Sofia stood.

“No.”

Elena looked at her.

“He found her.”

Sofia's face went pale.

“He knows you found me.”

Marcus immediately reached for his phone.

“We have to leave.”

“Why?”

“Because this house isn't safe anymore.”

A car engine sounded outside.

Then another.

Marcus looked through the curtain.

“Three vehicles.”

Julian stood.

“Police?”

“No.”

“How do you know?”

“Because they're not here to arrest anyone.”

Elena looked at Sofia.

“Where's your son?”

Sofia's face changed.

“Daniel?”

“Yes.”

“He's in the city.”

“Call him.”

“I can't.”

“Why?”

“He disappeared yesterday.”

Elena felt a chill.

“Yesterday?”

Sofia nodded.

“I haven't heard from him since.”

Marcus whispered:

“They're collecting everyone who knows.”

Elena's phone buzzed.

A message.

Unknown number.

YOU SHOULD HAVE STAYED OUT OF THE PAST.

Another.

LUCIA WILL PAY FOR YOUR CURIOSITY.

Elena's heart stopped.

Then a photograph arrived.

Her daughter.

Lucia.

Sitting at a table.

Alive.

Terrified.

And beside her stood Alejandro.

Elena's hands began shaking.

Julian looked over her shoulder.

“No.”

Elena stared at the image.

Her father had found Lucia.

THE ESCAPE

The front door exploded inward.

Sofia screamed.

Marcus grabbed Elena.

“Back door!”

They ran.

Julian pulled Sofia behind him.

Gunshots cracked through the night.

The windows shattered.

Elena ducked.

“Move!”

They reached the garden.

Marcus led them through a narrow path.

Behind them, men shouted.

“Find the girl!”

“She isn't here!”

“Search every room!”

Elena stumbled.

Julian caught her.

“Are you hurt?”

“No.”

She looked at him.

“My daughter.”

“We'll get her.”

“You promise?”

He hesitated.

Then nodded.

“I promise.”

They reached the car.

Marcus started the engine.

Everyone climbed inside.

The vehicle sped away.

For several minutes nobody spoke.

Then Sofia whispered:

“He won't hurt her.”

Elena looked at her.

“You don't know that.”

“Yes, I do.”

“Why?”

“Because your father needs her alive.”

“For the trust?”

“Yes.”

Elena stared at the photograph.

“Then we use that.”

Marcus looked at her through the rearview mirror.

“What are you thinking?”

Elena wiped her tears.

“I'm going to take the empire away from him.”

Julian looked at her.

“How?”

She held up the contract.

“Article Seven.”

Marcus frowned.

“What about it?”

“The designated heir.”

“Lucia.”

“Yes.”

Elena smiled for the first time that night.

“And the trust has one weakness.”

“What?”

“The child doesn't have to be physically present.”

Marcus understood.

“Legal recognition.”

“Yes.”

“If Lucia is recognized as the beneficiary…”

“The entire empire transfers to her.”

Julian leaned forward.

“But she's eight.”

“Which means we need a legal guardian.”

Marcus stared at Elena.

“You.”

Elena nodded.

“And once the trust recognizes Lucia…”

She looked at the photograph of her daughter.

“My father loses everything.”

THE TRAP

At 3:15 a.m., Elena made the call.

She contacted the trust's senior counsel.

“I want an emergency beneficiary declaration.”

The attorney went silent.

“Are you certain?”

“Yes.”

“Once filed, it cannot be withdrawn without the beneficiary's consent.”

“I understand.”

“And your daughter?”

“She is alive.”

“Do you have proof?”

Elena sent the photograph.

The attorney's voice changed.

“Oh my God.”

“Prepare the declaration.”

“Ms. Villeneuve, if we activate this clause, every controlling interest will immediately be frozen pending verification.”

“Do it.”

“Your father will fight.”

“I know.”

“Julian's family will fight.”

“I know.”

“And whoever is holding your daughter may retaliate.”

Elena closed her eyes.

“Do it anyway.”

The attorney inhaled.

“Understood.”

The call ended.

For the first time in twenty-six years, the Villeneuve Trust moved toward its true beneficiary.

Lucia.

THE WOMAN IN THE PENTHOUSE

At sunrise, Camila woke on the floor of the Azure Crown penthouse.

Her hands were tied.

Her face was bruised.

The room was dark.

Alejandro stood by the window.

He looked exhausted.

Camila whispered:

“Why?”

He turned.

“Why did you betray me?”

Camila laughed bitterly.

“You betrayed everyone first.”

Alejandro's jaw tightened.

“I protected this family.”

“You destroyed it.”

“I prevented a war.”

“You created one.”

He stepped closer.

“Where is Lucia?”

Camila looked at him.

She smiled through the blood on her lip.

“You'll never find her.”

Alejandro's expression hardened.

“Tell me.”

“No.”

He grabbed her arm.

“Where is she?”

Camila stared directly into his eyes.

“You're too late.”

“What does that mean?”

“The trust has been activated.”

Alejandro froze.

“What?”

“Elena knows.”

His face drained of color.

Camila smiled.

“And now the empire belongs to a little girl you couldn't kill.”

Alejandro released her.

For several seconds, he stood completely still.

Then his phone rang.

He answered.

A lawyer's voice spoke rapidly.

Alejandro's expression collapsed.

“Repeat that.”

A pause.

“Who authorized it?”

Another pause.

He slowly lowered the phone.

Camila watched him.

“What happened?”

Alejandro looked at her.

“The trust has recognized Lucia.”

Camila smiled.

“And?”

Alejandro's voice was barely audible.

“Everything is frozen.”

THE LAST BETRAYAL

Across the city, Elena stood before the windows of the Villeneuve Tower.

Her phone displayed the confirmation.

BENEFICIARY STATUS: VERIFIED.

LUCIA ELENA ROSSI — PRIMARY BENEFICIARY.

TRUST CONTROL: FROZEN.

She exhaled.

For the first time, she had taken something back.

Not the resorts.

Not the money.

Not the company.

Her daughter.

Then another message arrived.

This one from an unknown number.

YOU WON THE FIRST ROUND.

Elena stared.

Another message.

BUT YOU STILL DON'T KNOW WHO LUCIA'S FATHER REALLY IS.

She frowned.

She looked toward Julian.

He was standing across the room.

“What does that mean?”

He walked toward her.

“What?”

She showed him the message.

His face went pale.

“That isn't possible.”

“What?”

Julian looked at her.

“The contract.”

“What about it?”

“The child clause.”

“Yes.”

“It doesn't say the beneficiary has to be my biological daughter.”

Elena froze.

“What?”

Julian took the contract from her.

He pointed to the wording.

LEGITIMATE DESCENDANT OF THE DESIGNATED ROSSI HEIR.

He looked at Elena.

“That could mean…”

Elena's heart stopped.

“Mean what?”

Julian's voice trembled.

“Lucia might not be my biological daughter.”

Silence.

Elena stared at him.

“But the DNA records—”

“There were never any DNA records.”

She stepped backward.

“Then whose daughter is she?”

Julian looked toward the city.

“I don't know.”

Elena's phone rang.

Unknown number.

She answered.

Nobody spoke.

Then a little girl's voice whispered:

“Mommy?”

Elena's entire body went still.

“Lucia?”

“Yes.”

“Where are you?”

“I don't know.”

“Are you safe?”

A pause.

Then the girl whispered:

“There's a man here.”

“Who?”

“He says he's my father.”

Elena's heart stopped.

“Put him on the phone.”

Silence.

Then a man's voice came through.

Elena knew it immediately.

It was the same voice from the recording.

The voice that had controlled Julian.

The voice that had manipulated her father.

The voice behind the conspiracy.

He laughed softly.

“Hello, Elena.”

She couldn't breathe.

“Who are you?”

The man answered:

“You've spent nine years believing Julian was your husband.”

A pause.

“You've spent eight years believing Lucia was his daughter.”

Then came the words that shattered everything.

“But you were wrong about both.”

The line went dead.

Elena slowly lowered the phone.

Julian stared at her.

“What did he say?”

She looked at him.

Her face had gone completely pale.

“He says you're not Lucia's father.”

Julian swallowed.

“Then who is?”

Elena stared at the city below.

“I don't know.”

And somewhere far away, an eight-year-old girl was being held by a man who claimed to be her real father.

A man who had just revealed that the contract Elena had spent her life protecting might have been built around a child whose identity had been deliberately falsified.

May you like

The empire had finally found its rightful heir.

But Elena was beginning to fear that she had never known who that heir truly was.
