CHAPTER 9 — THE NIGHT ELENA DISAPPEARED

CHAPTER 9 — THE NIGHT ELENA DISAPPEARED
The paper slipped from Elena's fingers.
It landed on the dusty floor between her and Julian.
Neither of them moved.
For several seconds, the abandoned neonatal ward seemed to disappear around them.
The rain outside.
The broken windows.
The old medical machines.
The flickering emergency light.
Everything faded beneath the weight of one sentence.
AND THAT MAN IS NOT JULIAN ROSSI.
Julian stared at the page.
Then at Elena.
Then at Lucia.
The little girl was standing beside her mother, clutching Elena's coat with both hands.
“Mommy?”
Elena looked down.
Lucia's eyes were frightened.
“What does it say?”
Elena couldn't answer.
Julian picked up the paper.
His fingers trembled.
“Who is my father?”
Lucia looked at him.
“I don't know.”
Julian swallowed.
“Who told you I wasn't?”
“Grandpa.”
“Which grandpa?”
Lucia hesitated.
Then whispered:
“Your grandpa.”
Julian's face went pale.
“My grandfather?”
Lucia nodded.
“He told me never to call you Daddy.”
Elena felt something inside her break.
“Why?”
Lucia looked toward the dark hallway.
“Because he said Daddy was coming back.”
Julian stiffened.
“Who?”
The girl whispered:
“The man who took Mommy away.”
THE NIGHT ELENA DISAPPEARED
Elena closed her eyes.
Something moved inside her memory.
A flash.
A hospital corridor.
White lights.
A man's hand.
A door.
Someone shouting.
Then darkness.
She opened her eyes.
“I remember.”
Julian looked at her.
“What?”
“The night I disappeared.”
“You disappeared?”
Elena nodded slowly.
“I didn't have a miscarriage.”
“No.”
“I didn't wake up in my own bed.”
“No.”
“I woke up somewhere else.”
Julian's voice softened.
“Where?”
She pressed her fingers against her temple.
“A room.”
“What kind?”
“A hospital room.”
Marcus appeared in the doorway.
He had heard everything.
Elena looked at him.
“You knew.”
Marcus didn't deny it.
“I knew you had been moved.”
“Where?”
“A private clinic.”
“I remember.”
She looked toward the old neonatal unit.
“This one.”
Marcus nodded.
Elena's breathing became shallow.
“There was a woman.”
“Who?”
“I don't know.”
“She was wearing blue.”
Marcus stared at her.
“What?”
“She said she was a nurse.”
Elena's eyes widened.
“She told me my baby was alive.”
Julian stepped closer.
“What else?”
“She told me someone was coming.”
“Who?”
Elena shook her head.
“I don't remember.”
She closed her eyes again.
Then—
a voice.
A man's voice.
Not Alejandro.
Not Julian.
Someone else.
You were never supposed to survive.
Elena opened her eyes.
“I heard him.”
Julian froze.
“Who?”
“I don't know.”
“What did he say?”
Elena looked at him.
“He said…”
Her voice broke.
“He said I had already ruined everything.”
THE DOOR THAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN LOCKED
Marcus immediately stepped into the hallway.
“Stay here.”
Elena grabbed his arm.
“No.”
He looked at her.
“If someone brought you here, they may still be watching.”
“I don't care.”
“You should.”
“My daughter was taken from me.”
She pointed toward Lucia.
“I lost eight years.”
Her voice hardened.
“I am done being afraid.”
Marcus studied her for a moment.
Then nodded.
“Then stay behind me.”
They moved through the corridor.
Julian carried Lucia.
Elena followed.
At the end of the hallway stood a steel door.
Marcus stopped.
“This wasn't here before.”
“What do you mean?”
“It was sealed twenty years ago.”
He examined the lock.
Someone had recently forced it open.
Elena stared.
“Someone has been here.”
Marcus nodded.
They entered.
Inside was a small archive room.
Old patient files covered the walls.
Boxes filled the floor.
And on a desk sat a tape recorder.
Elena's heart began pounding.
A red light was blinking.
PLAYBACK READY.
Marcus stared at it.
“Nobody knew about this room.”
Elena stepped forward.
“Then someone wanted us to find it.”
She pressed play.
Static filled the room.
Then a woman's voice.
Elena recognized it instantly.
Sofia.
“If you're hearing this, Elena, then I failed to protect you.”
Elena's breath caught.
The recording continued.
“The night your daughter was born, three men entered the clinic.”
Julian looked at Marcus.
Three?
“Your father was one of them.”
Elena closed her eyes.
“The second was Victor Rossi.”
Julian froze.
“My grandfather.”
“The third man was the reason everything happened.”
The recording paused.
A faint click.
Then:
“His name was Adrian Vale.”
Elena opened her eyes.
“Who?”
Marcus's face had gone white.
Julian stared at him.
“You know that name.”
Marcus said nothing.
“Marcus.”
Still nothing.
Elena stepped toward him.
“You know him.”
Marcus finally nodded.
“Yes.”
“Who is he?”
Marcus whispered:
“The original owner of the Rossi fortune.”
ADRIAN VALE
Julian stared.
“That makes no sense.”
Marcus looked at him.
“Your family changed its name.”
“To Rossi?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because Adrian Vale disappeared.”
Julian shook his head.
“My family has been Rossi for generations.”
“So you were told.”
Elena stared at Marcus.
“Why would they change their name?”
“Because Adrian Vale was wanted.”
“For what?”
“Murder.”
Silence.
Marcus continued.
“He was accused of killing his business partner.”
“Who?”
“Your great-grandfather.”
Julian's face tightened.
“My family killed its own founder?”
Marcus nodded.
“Then they took the company.”
Elena looked at the recording.
“And Adrian survived.”
“Yes.”
“Then he came back.”
Marcus's eyes darkened.
“Twenty-six years ago.”
The pieces began falling together.
Elena's pregnancy.
The contract.
Lucia.
The missing money.
The false identities.
Her disappearance.
The empire.
“All of this…”
She looked at Marcus.
“Was because of him?”
“No.”
Marcus shook his head.
“All of this happened because your family was trying to stop him.”
THE NIGHT OF THE FIRE
The recording continued.
Sofia's voice was quieter now.
“Adrian came to the clinic because he knew about the child.”
Elena's blood ran cold.
“He believed the child was his.”
Julian looked at Elena.
“What?”
The recording continued.
“He claimed that Victor Rossi had stolen his identity and that the child belonged to him.”
Elena's eyes widened.
“That's impossible.”
Marcus whispered:
“Is it?”
Julian looked at him.
“You're saying Adrian Vale is Lucia's biological father?”
“I don't know.”
“But someone tested her.”
“No.”
Julian stared.
“We never got a test.”
Marcus shook his head.
“The DNA records you saw were manufactured.”
Elena felt sick.
“So nobody ever knew.”
“Correct.”
“Then how did Adrian know?”
Marcus looked at her.
“Because he was there.”
Elena's face went pale.
The recording continued.
“Adrian entered the maternity ward at 8:14 p.m.”
“He demanded to see the baby.”
“Victor refused.”
“Alejandro ordered security to remove him.”
A loud sound came through the recording.
Then shouting.
A woman's scream.
A baby crying.
Elena's body went rigid.
She knew that sound.
She had heard it in nightmares for years.
Her daughter crying.
“Then the fire began.”
Julian whispered:
“No.”
“Someone started a fire in the east wing.”
“The nurses fled.”
“The baby was moved.”
“Elena was unconscious.”
The recording crackled.
Then Sofia spoke one final sentence.
“When I returned, both mother and child were gone.”
The tape stopped.
THE WOMAN WHO CARRIED HER
Elena turned toward Marcus.
“Where was I taken?”
“I don't know.”
“You said you knew.”
“I knew the route.”
“Then tell me.”
Marcus hesitated.
“Your father took you.”
“Where?”
“To a private residence.”
“Which one?”
“The old Vale estate.”
Elena froze.
“Adrian's?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Marcus looked at Julian.
“Because Alejandro believed Adrian would return.”
Julian shook his head.
“So my father-in-law hid Elena at the house of the man he feared?”
“No.”
Marcus's voice became quiet.
“He hid Elena there because he knew Adrian would never search his own old home.”
Elena's eyes widened.
“Wait.”
She looked at Lucia.
“My daughter was born.”
“Yes.”
“Adrian believed she was his.”
“Yes.”
“My father took me.”
“Yes.”
“Then where did Lucia go?”
Marcus looked away.
Elena's heart sank.
“You don't know.”
“No.”
“But Sofia did.”
“Yes.”
“Where is Sofia?”
Marcus pulled out his phone.
“She disappeared.”
“When?”
“Twenty minutes ago.”
Elena froze.
“After we left her house?”
Marcus nodded.
“She sent one message.”
“What did it say?”
Marcus showed her the screen.
Only four words.
THE GIRL IS IN DANGER.
THE CALL
Julian's phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
“Hello?”
A man's voice spoke.
“You finally found the truth.”
Julian stiffened.
“Who are you?”
“You know.”
“No.”
“You've heard my voice.”
Julian looked at Elena.
“Adrian?”
The man laughed.
“That's what they call me.”
Elena grabbed the phone.
“Where is my daughter?”
A pause.
Then:
“Safe.”
“Where?”
“Where she has always been.”
“What does that mean?”
“She was never lost.”
Elena's voice shook.
“She was stolen.”
“No.”
The man's voice became colder.
“She was protected.”
“From whom?”
“From you.”
Elena froze.
“Why?”
“Because you were never supposed to remember.”
“Remember what?”
“The night you chose him.”
Elena frowned.
“Chose who?”
The line went silent.
Then the man whispered:
“Your husband.”
Julian stared.
“What did you do to her?”
“I saved her.”
“You took my wife.”
“I took the woman who knew too much.”
“You destroyed our lives.”
“No.”
Adrian laughed softly.
“Your families did that.”
Then the call ended.
THE MEMORY RETURNS
Elena stood completely still.
Julian looked at her.
“What did he mean?”
She didn't answer.
Her eyes were fixed on the wall.
A memory had returned.
Not a fragment.
The whole thing.
Nine years earlier.
She had been twenty-six.
She had been standing outside a hotel.
Julian was beside her.
They were arguing.
She had discovered something.
A document.
A contract.
A name.
Adrian Vale.
She had confronted Julian.
He had looked terrified.
Then her father arrived.
Alejandro shouted.
Julian tried to explain.
Elena remembered crying.
She remembered saying:
“You knew.”
Julian had answered:
“I didn't know everything.”
Then someone struck her from behind.
She fell.
But before she lost consciousness, she heard Julian say something.
Something she had forgotten until now.
“I'm sorry, Elena.”
She opened her eyes.
Julian was standing in front of her.
She whispered:
“You knew.”
His face changed.
“What?”
“You knew that night.”
“About what?”
“Adrian.”
Julian's expression collapsed.
“I…”
“You knew.”
“I knew the name.”
“You knew he was coming.”
“I was told he was dangerous.”
“By whom?”
Julian looked away.
“Your father.”
Elena stepped toward him.
“And you helped him.”
Julian shook his head.
“No.”
“You were there.”
“Yes.”
“You watched me disappear.”
“Yes.”
“You let me believe I lost my child.”
“I didn't know about the child.”
“But you knew I was being taken.”
Julian closed his eyes.
“Yes.”
Elena's voice became almost inaudible.
“Why?”
He finally looked at her.
“Because I was trying to save you.”
THE SECRET JULIAN NEVER TOLD
Julian reached into his coat.
He removed a folded piece of paper.
“I've carried this for nine years.”
Elena stared.
“What is it?”
“The last thing you gave me.”
She opened it.
It was a handwritten note.
Her handwriting.
JULIAN, IF SOMETHING HAPPENS TO ME, DON'T TRUST MY FATHER.
Elena stared.
“I wrote this?”
“Yes.”
“When?”
“The night before you disappeared.”
She looked at him.
“Why don't I remember?”
“Because you were drugged.”
She read the note again.
Then noticed something written on the back.
A name.
SOFIA.
Elena looked up.
“Sofia.”
Julian nodded.
“You gave her instructions.”
“For what?”
“To hide Lucia.”
Elena's breathing stopped.
“I knew?”
“Yes.”
“You remembered?”
“Not until tonight.”
She closed her eyes.
Her memories were returning.
Piece by piece.
She had known.
She had tried to protect her daughter.
She had trusted Sofia.
And someone had erased it all.
THE REAL BETRAYAL
Marcus suddenly stepped forward.
“There is one thing you still don't understand.”
Elena looked at him.
“What?”
“You weren't the only person who disappeared that night.”
Julian frowned.
“Who else?”
Marcus answered:
“Your mother.”
Elena froze.
“My mother was dead.”
“No.”
“She died when I was twenty.”
“No.”
Marcus looked at her.
“She disappeared the same night you did.”
Elena felt her entire body go cold.
“Where is she?”
“I don't know.”
“You're lying.”
“I wish I were.”
“Then who identified her body?”
“Your father.”
Elena's eyes widened.
“Then the woman buried in my mother's grave…”
Marcus nodded.
“Wasn't your mother.”
Silence.
Julian stared.
“Then whose body was it?”
Marcus didn't answer.
Elena's phone vibrated.
A message.
Unknown number.
A photograph.
An older woman.
Gray hair.
Alive.
Standing beside a window.
Elena's hand covered her mouth.
“Mom.”
Another message arrived.
YOU HAVE ONE HOUR.
Then:
BRING LUCIA.
A third message.
COME TO THE HOUSE WHERE YOU WERE BORN.
Elena stared at the screen.
She knew exactly where that was.
The old Villeneuve estate.
The house her family had sold twenty years ago.
The house where her mother had supposedly died.
She looked at Julian.
“We're going.”
Marcus shook his head.
“No.”
Elena looked at him.
“My mother is alive.”
“Yes.”
“My daughter is in danger.”
“Yes.”
“Then I'm going.”
Julian stepped beside her.
“So am I.”
Marcus looked at both of them.
“You don't understand.”
“What?”
“If Adrian Vale is there…”
Marcus paused.
“…then this isn't a rescue.”
Elena's eyes hardened.
“What is it?”
“A negotiation.”
THE HOUSE
At 11:56 p.m., they arrived.
The old estate stood beneath a black sky.
No lights.
No guards.
No security cameras.
Only an enormous iron gate hanging open.
Elena stepped from the car.
Lucia held her hand.
Julian stood on her other side.
Marcus remained behind them.
The front door opened by itself.
Elena froze.
Then a woman's voice came from inside.
“Elena.”
She stopped breathing.
Her mother's voice.
The same voice she remembered from childhood.
Soft.
Warm.
Impossible.
“Mom?”
A woman stepped into the doorway.
Older.
Paler.
But unmistakable.
Elena's knees nearly gave out.
“Mom…”
Her mother opened her arms.
Elena ran to her.
They embraced.
For several seconds, neither could speak.
Then Elena pulled away.
“You're alive.”
Her mother nodded through tears.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because your father wanted you to believe I was dead.”
Elena looked at her.
“Why?”
Her mother looked at Lucia.
Then at Julian.
Then toward the dark hallway.
“Because I discovered who Lucia's real father was.”
Julian stiffened.
Elena's heart pounded.
“Who?”
Her mother whispered:
“Not Adrian.”
Silence.
Elena stared.
“Then who?”
Her mother looked directly at Julian.
“That's what they wanted you to believe.”
Julian's face went pale.
“What are you saying?”
Elena's mother shook her head.
“I don't know who Lucia's biological father is.”
Elena's heart sank.
“Then why did you say you knew?”
“Because I know who changed the DNA.”
Julian stepped forward.
“Who?”
Her mother looked toward the staircase.
A man's silhouette appeared at the top.
Tall.
Motionless.
Then the lights came on.
Elena saw him.
Older.
Scarred.
Cold eyes.
The man from the phone.
Adrian Vale.
He looked directly at Lucia.
Then at Elena.
And finally at Julian.
He smiled.
“Welcome home.”
Elena pulled Lucia behind her.
Adrian's smile disappeared.
“You've spent nine years searching for the wrong man.”
Julian stepped forward.
“What do you want?”
Adrian looked at him.
“Nothing.”
He pointed toward Elena.
“I want her to remember.”
Elena's heart raced.
“Remember what?”
Adrian descended the stairs slowly.
“The night you disappeared.”
He stopped in front of her.
Then whispered:
“You weren't kidnapped.”
Elena stared.
“You left willingly.”
Her face went pale.
“That isn't true.”
Adrian looked at Lucia.
“Tell her.”
Lucia's eyes filled with tears.
Elena turned.
“Tell me what?”
The little girl began crying.
“I remember.”
Elena dropped to her knees.
“What do you remember?”
Lucia whispered:
“The night Mommy disappeared…”
She looked at Julian.
“…Daddy was there.”
Julian's face went white.
“And he wasn't alone.”
Elena's heart stopped.
Lucia pointed toward the hallway.
“There was another man.”
Adrian slowly closed his eyes.
Then Lucia said the words that shattered the last piece of Elena's certainty.
“He looked exactly like Daddy.”
Julian stared at the child.
Elena turned toward him.
And for the first time, she understood why the contract had been forged, why the DNA records had vanished, why the money had disappeared, and why someone had spent eight years hiding Lucia.
There were two men.
Two identities.
May you like
Two versions of Julian Rossi.
And one of them had been standing beside Elena on the night she disappeared.
