CHAPTER 5 — THE EMERGENCY BOARD MEETING

CHAPTER 5 — THE EMERGENCY BOARD MEETING
By 6:32 a.m., the Azure Crown was surrounded by police cars.
Fire engines blocked the main entrance.
Security officers stood behind yellow barricades.
Reporters were already gathering across the street, their cameras pointed toward the blackened windows of the penthouse.
But Elena barely noticed any of it.
She sat inside a dark sedan beneath the underground parking garage, staring at the folder she had managed to save.
Her hands were still shaking.
Across from her, Julian sat in silence.
Camila was beside him.
Three people who had spent the previous night on opposite sides of a war were now trapped in the same vehicle.
And none of them knew who they could trust.
Elena looked at Julian.
“You said my father knew about the plan.”
Julian nodded.
“Yes.”
“How much?”
“I don't know.”
“You knew enough to marry me.”
“I know.”
“You knew enough to spy on me.”
His eyes dropped.
“Yes.”
“And you knew they were stealing from my family.”
“I suspected.”
Elena's voice hardened.
“That's not an answer.”
Julian looked up.
“I was told that the money was part of a restructuring agreement.”
“By whom?”
He hesitated.
“Marcus.”
Elena froze.
“Marcus told you to marry me?”
“No.”
“Then who?”
Julian swallowed.
“Your father.”
Silence.
Elena leaned back.
For several seconds, she simply stared at him.
Then she whispered:
“My father chose you.”
“Yes.”
“To marry me.”
“Yes.”
“To enter my family.”
“Yes.”
“And you agreed.”
Julian closed his eyes.
“I was twenty-eight. My company was failing. My father had left us buried in debt.”
He looked at her.
“Your father offered me a way out.”
Elena's expression didn't change.
“What did he promise you?”
“Everything.”
THE EMERGENCY CALL
At 7:01 a.m., every board member of Villeneuve International received the same message.
EMERGENCY MEETING.
LOCATION: VILLENEUVE TOWER — BOARDROOM A.
ATTENDANCE MANDATORY.
AUTHORITY: ELENA VILLENEUVE, CONTROLLING TRUST BENEFICIARY.
The message was followed by one additional instruction.
NO PERSONAL DEVICES WILL BE PERMITTED INSIDE.
Elena had written it herself.
She knew what happened when secrets were allowed to leave a room.
She had just watched one room burn.
At 7:46, Elena entered Villeneuve Tower.
The lobby fell silent.
Employees turned.
Executives stopped talking.
Security officers stood straighter.
For nine years, they had watched Elena walk through the building beside Julian.
Usually smiling.
Usually quiet.
Usually allowing him to take the spotlight.
Today, she walked alone.
And nobody mistook her for the wife of the CEO.
She was the person who controlled the company.
The woman behind the name.
The woman behind the empire.
The woman they had underestimated.
Elena reached the security desk.
“Good morning.”
The head of security nodded.
“Good morning, Mrs. Villeneuve.”
She looked at him.
“It's Elena now.”
He hesitated.
Then nodded.
“Yes, Ms. Villeneuve.”
The elevator opened.
She stepped inside.
Julian remained behind.
His access card had been permanently disabled.
He watched the doors close.
For the first time in nine years, Elena entered the headquarters without him.
THE BOARDROOM
At 8:00 a.m., every seat was occupied.
Twenty-three executives.
Six attorneys.
Three trust representatives.
Two outside auditors.
And Alejandro Villeneuve.
Elena entered last.
Nobody spoke.
She took the chair at the head of the table.
The same chair Julian had occupied for years.
Then she placed the black key on the table.
Number 17.
A tiny object.
But everyone in the room stared at it.
Alejandro looked particularly uncomfortable.
Elena noticed.
“Dad.”
“Yes?”
“You recognize this.”
His expression tightened.
“Yes.”
“Good.”
She pushed it toward him.
“Tell them what it opens.”
Alejandro didn't answer.
One of the directors looked confused.
“What is this about?”
Elena looked around the room.
“Last night, someone tried to kill me.”
A murmur spread across the table.
“I escaped.”
She placed the flash drive on the table.
“Before the penthouse burned, I found evidence that my marriage was deliberately arranged.”
Another murmur.
“And I discovered that millions of dollars were moved through companies connected to this corporation.”
The chief financial officer looked pale.
“Ms. Villeneuve, I assure you—”
“Don't.”
Her voice was quiet.
“But firm.”
“Don't assure me of anything.”
She pressed a button.
A screen came alive.
Bank transfers appeared.
Dates.
Amounts.
Account numbers.
Shell companies.
Names.
The room became silent.
Elena pointed toward the screen.
“Eighty-four million dollars.”
A director leaned forward.
“That's impossible.”
“It happened.”
“When?”
“Over nine years.”
Someone whispered:
“During her marriage.”
Elena nodded.
“Yes.”
Another director looked toward Alejandro.
“Did you know?”
Alejandro remained silent.
Elena watched him.
“Answer him.”
Alejandro finally spoke.
“I knew some money was being moved.”
The room erupted.
“You knew?”
“Why wasn't the board informed?”
“How could you allow this?”
Alejandro raised his hand.
“Because we didn't know who was behind it.”
Elena looked at him.
“You still don't.”
“No.”
She nodded.
“Then today we find out.”
THE FIRST NAME
Elena changed the screen.
A list appeared.
AUTHORIZED TRANSFERS — PROJECT ROSSI
At the bottom was a signature.
A. VILLENEUVE.
The room became completely silent.
Everyone looked at Alejandro.
Elena did too.
“Is that your signature?”
Alejandro stared at the screen.
“Yes.”
“Did you authorize these transfers?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
He looked at his daughter.
“Because I was protecting you.”
Elena's expression hardened.
“You keep saying that.”
“Because it's true.”
“You manipulated my marriage.”
“I saved your life.”
“You chose Julian.”
“I needed someone I could control.”
“You couldn't control me.”
“No.”
Alejandro's voice cracked.
“That was the problem.”
Elena froze.
“What does that mean?”
Her father looked around the room.
Then he said something that made several directors exchange frightened glances.
“The person behind this conspiracy was never interested in owning the company.”
Elena frowned.
“Then what did they want?”
Alejandro looked at the black key.
“They wanted access to the vault.”
Elena's heart began pounding.
“Vault 17.”
“Yes.”
“What is inside?”
Alejandro didn't answer.
Elena stood.
“Dad.”
He looked at her.
“If you don't tell me now, I will have the trust attorneys remove you from every position you hold.”
His eyes narrowed.
“You wouldn't.”
“I would.”
A long silence.
Finally, Alejandro whispered:
“Proof.”
“Proof of what?”
“That the Villeneuve fortune doesn't belong to us.”
The room went still.
Elena's stomach tightened.
“Then who does it belong to?”
Alejandro looked toward the window.
“The Rossi family.”
THE NAME NOBODY EXPECTED
Julian had been waiting outside the boardroom.
He was brought in five minutes later.
He looked exhausted.
His tie was loose.
His face was pale.
Elena watched him sit across from her.
“The board needs to hear something from you.”
Julian nodded.
“What?”
“Tell them what your father told you about my family.”
Julian swallowed.
“My father said the Villeneuve fortune was stolen.”
“By whom?”
“By Clara.”
Elena's eyes widened.
“My great-grandmother?”
“Yes.”
“From the Rossi family?”
“Yes.”
A director stood.
“This is absurd.”
Julian shook his head.
“My father showed me documents when I was young.”
“What documents?”
“I don't know.”
“Where are they?”
“Dead.”
“Who?”
“My father.”
Elena stared at him.
“Your father didn't die naturally.”
Julian's face changed.
“What?”
Elena pushed a document toward him.
“Look.”
Julian picked it up.
His father's death certificate.
Then another page.
A private investigator's report.
The original autopsy had never been released.
Cause of death:
POISONING SUSPECTED.
Julian looked up.
“My father was murdered?”
Elena nodded.
“Probably.”
“By whom?”
“That is what we're trying to determine.”
Julian's breathing became shallow.
Then the boardroom doors opened.
Everyone turned.
A woman entered.
She was in her sixties.
Elegant.
Severe.
And completely unfamiliar to Elena.
Except for one thing.
The woman was wearing the same emerald pendant Elena had seen on Camila.
Elena stood.
“Who are you?”
The woman looked directly at her.
“My name is Vanessa Hart.”
Camila's face went white.
“No.”
Vanessa smiled.
“Hello, Camila.”
Camila stood frozen.
“You're dead.”
Vanessa laughed.
“That is becoming a popular rumor in this family.”
Elena looked at Camila.
“You know her?”
Camila couldn't speak.
Vanessa stepped forward.
“I am Camila's mother.”
THE WOMAN WHO SENT CAMILA
The room erupted.
Elena looked at Vanessa.
“You arranged her relationship with Julian.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because I needed access to the Villeneuve Trust.”
“Who hired you?”
Vanessa smiled.
“You already know.”
Elena's stomach tightened.
“Marcus?”
“No.”
“My father?”
“No.”
“Then who?”
Vanessa slowly turned toward Julian.
“His.”
Julian stared.
“My?”
“Your family.”
Julian shook his head.
“My father is dead.”
“Your father was only one piece.”
“Then who?”
Vanessa reached into her purse.
She placed a photograph on the table.
Elena picked it up.
It showed an elderly man.
Standing beside Clara Villeneuve.
Elena recognized him from the family photographs.
Her great-grandfather.
But there was another man in the photograph.
Much younger.
Standing behind them.
Elena's eyes widened.
She recognized him.
Alejandro.
Her father.
But the photograph was dated:
1989.
Alejandro had been fourteen.
Impossible.
Elena turned toward him.
“Dad?”
Alejandro looked at the photograph.
His face became completely blank.
Vanessa smiled.
“Now you understand.”
Elena shook her head.
“No.”
Vanessa leaned closer.
“Your father has been hiding the truth since he was a child.”
“What truth?”
Vanessa's smile disappeared.
“Your grandfather wasn't the man who built the empire.”
Elena stared.
“He was the man who stole it.”
THE RECORDING
Vanessa placed another device on the table.
“This is why I came.”
She pressed play.
A man's voice filled the room.
Old.
Weak.
But unmistakable.
Elena recognized it immediately.
Her grandfather.
“If Elena ever discovers the truth, tell her this: the empire was never meant to belong to the Villeneuve family.”
Everyone listened.
The recording continued.
“Clara created the trust to protect the Rossi heirs.”
Julian's face went pale.
“But Victor betrayed her.”
A pause.
“And when Victor died, I continued the lie.”
The recording ended.
Nobody moved.
Julian stared at Elena.
“So my family was supposed to own everything?”
Elena shook her head.
“Apparently.”
“Then why did your family keep it?”
She looked toward Alejandro.
He finally answered.
“Because Clara changed her mind.”
“Why?”
Alejandro's eyes filled with something Elena had never seen there before.
Shame.
“She discovered what the Rossi family had become.”
Julian's jaw tightened.
“What does that mean?”
Alejandro looked at him.
“Your family didn't just steal money.”
He paused.
“They killed people.”
THE SECOND FILE
Vanessa produced another folder.
“That's not the worst part.”
Elena opened it.
Inside were photographs.
Dozens.
Victims.
Employees.
Accountants.
Lawyers.
People who had disappeared over decades.
Every one of them had one thing in common.
They had tried to expose the original theft.
Elena turned another page.
A photograph of a young woman.
Her breath caught.
“Who is she?”
Alejandro didn't answer.
Julian stared.
Then his face changed.
“That was my mother.”
Elena looked at him.
“What?”
Julian picked up the photograph.
His hands shook.
“She was twenty-nine.”
A note was attached.
DISAPPEARED AFTER THREATENING TO EXPOSE THE TRUST.
Julian's eyes filled with tears.
“My mother didn't die in an accident.”
“No,” Vanessa said.
“She was killed.”
Julian looked at her.
“Who killed her?”
Vanessa didn't answer.
Instead, she looked toward Alejandro.
Elena turned.
Her father stood completely still.
Julian rose.
“You know.”
Alejandro didn't speak.
“You know who killed my mother.”
Still nothing.
Julian slammed his hands against the table.
“ANSWER ME!”
Alejandro finally looked at him.
“I do.”
Julian's voice broke.
“Who?”
Alejandro whispered:
“Your father.”
The room fell silent.
Julian stared at him in disbelief.
“My father killed my mother?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because she wanted to tell you the truth.”
Julian slowly sat down.
His entire body seemed to collapse.
Elena looked at him.
For the first time, she saw the boy hidden beneath the man she had married.
A boy whose family had been destroying itself long before either of them were born.
THE VOTE
At 10:21 a.m., the board took a vote.
The motion was simple.
Suspend Alejandro Villeneuve from all executive authority pending investigation.
Twenty-three members.
Twenty-two voted yes.
Alejandro did not vote.
Elena abstained.
Her father looked at her.
“You're really doing this?”
She nodded.
“You taught me that protecting the family means protecting the truth.”
He looked away.
“I was wrong.”
“Yes.”
Elena's voice softened.
“You were.”
The board approved the motion.
Then another vote.
Suspend Julian Rossi from all operational authority.
Approved unanimously.
Julian accepted it without protest.
Then Elena stood.
“There will be one more change.”
The board members looked at her.
“Effective immediately, the company will stop using the Villeneuve-Rossi joint operating structure.”
A director frowned.
“Then what replaces it?”
Elena looked at the black key.
“The original trust.”
Someone whispered:
“That's impossible.”
Elena shook her head.
“No.”
She looked toward the window.
“It's time.”
THE MESSAGE
Her phone vibrated.
One message.
Unknown number.
VAULT 17 HAS BEEN OPENED.
Elena's blood ran cold.
She looked at Vanessa.
Vanessa's expression changed.
“You didn't open it.”
“No.”
“Then who did?”
Elena looked at Alejandro.
He shook his head.
“Not me.”
Julian stood.
“Then someone else has the key.”
Elena slowly looked down.
The black key was still sitting on the table.
Number 17.
She picked it up.
A second message appeared.
COME ALONE.
Then another.
BRING JULIAN.
Elena's heart raced.
A final message appeared.
DO NOT BRING YOUR FATHER.
She looked up.
Everyone was watching her.
Alejandro stood.
“What is it?”
Elena closed her hand around the key.
“Nothing.”
Her father stared at her.
He knew she was lying.
For the first time in her life, Elena lied to him.
She turned toward Julian.
“Come with me.”
“Where?”
“To the first resort.”
Julian looked confused.
“Why?”
Elena's eyes hardened.
“Because someone has opened the vault.”
She paused.
“And whoever did it wants us to see what they've been hiding.”
THE MAN WAITING BELOW
Two hours later, Elena and Julian stood before an abandoned property on the edge of the coast.
The first Villeneuve resort.
The place where Clara had begun everything.
The building had been closed for decades.
Its windows were boarded.
Its walls covered in vines.
The sign above the entrance was barely readable.
VILLENEUVE COASTAL HOTEL.
Elena inserted the key into the old lock.
Click.
The door opened.
Inside, dust covered everything.
Julian looked around.
“This place is enormous.”
“It was the first.”
They walked through the lobby.
At the far end was an old staircase.
They descended.
One floor.
Then another.
Finally, they reached a steel door.
Number 17.
Elena raised the key.
Before she could insert it—
the door opened.
Someone was already inside.
A man stepped from the darkness.
Elena froze.
Marcus.
He looked older than he had the night before.
But his eyes were clear.
He held a single folder.
“Hello, Elena.”
Julian stepped forward.
“Who are you?”
Marcus looked at him.
“The reason your father hated this family.”
Then he looked back at Elena.
“You've come for the truth.”
Elena nodded.
“Yes.”
Marcus opened the folder.
“Then prepare yourself.”
“For what?”
He looked at Julian.
Then back at her.
“The truth about your empire.”
He paused.
“And the truth about your marriage.”
Elena's face tightened.
Marcus whispered:
“Julian wasn't the only Rossi sent into your family.”
He placed a photograph into Elena's hand.
It showed two children.
A young Elena.
And another boy.
Elena stared.
She didn't recognize him.
“Who is this?”
Marcus looked at her.
“Your brother.”
Elena's heart stopped.
“I don't have a brother.”
Marcus's expression was grim.
“You did.”
He pointed to the photograph.
“He disappeared twenty-six years ago.”
Julian stared at the picture.
“Why?”
Marcus closed the folder.
“Because someone inside your family ordered his disappearance.”
Elena's hands began trembling.
“Who?”
Marcus looked toward the darkness behind them.
Then whispered:
“Your father.”
And somewhere above them, a door slammed shut.
May you like
The lights went out.
And for the second time in twenty-four hours, Elena realized that the person she had trusted most in the world might be the person she had been running from all along.
