CHAPTER 14 — THE LAST BETRAYAL

CHAPTER 14 — THE LAST BETRAYAL

Elena did not sleep.

The photograph had been burned.

The ashes were still warm in the kitchen sink.

But the image remained in her mind.

Three women.

Her mother.

Herself.

And another woman who looked exactly like her.

THE ORIGINAL VILLENEUVE DAUGHTER.

She had spent nine years believing her life had been stolen by one conspiracy.

Now she understood something much worse.

The conspiracy had never been one man's plan.

It had been a family tradition.

And every generation had protected it.

Elena looked toward the hallway.

Lucia was asleep.

Her daughter had no idea that by tomorrow morning, Elena might discover that even her own name was a lie.

Then her mother's voice came from behind her.

“Elena.”

She turned.

Her mother stood in the doorway.

Her face was pale.

“Who was that woman?”

Her mother didn't answer.

“Mom.”

“I need you to leave.”

Elena stared.

“What?”

“Take Lucia and go.”

“Why?”

“Because he's here.”

“Who?”

Her mother looked toward the dark hallway.

“Your brother.”

Elena froze.

“Daniel?”

“No.”

Her mother's voice broke.

“Your other brother.”

THE THIRD CHILD

Elena stared at her.

“I thought Camila was the first.”

“She was.”

“Daniel was the second.”

“Yes.”

“Then who is the third?”

Her mother closed her eyes.

“Victor.”

Elena shook her head.

“Victor Rossi?”

“No.”

“Then who?”

Her mother whispered:

“Victor Villeneuve.”

Elena felt cold.

“My father's name?”

“His middle name.”

“You told me he had no son.”

“I lied.”

“Why?”

“Because Victor was never supposed to exist.”

Elena stepped closer.

“Where is he?”

Her mother looked terrified.

“He's been watching you for years.”

A floorboard creaked.

Both women turned.

Nothing.

Elena's voice dropped.

“You said someone was here.”

“I saw him.”

“When?”

“Tonight.”

“What did he want?”

Her mother swallowed.

“You.”

THE MAN IN THE HALL

The lights went out.

Elena immediately ran toward Lucia's room.

“Lucia!”

Her daughter woke crying.

“Mommy?”

“Stay with me.”

A door slammed downstairs.

Elena grabbed Lucia.

Her mother followed.

Then a man's voice echoed through the darkness.

“You always were protective.”

Elena froze.

The voice was unfamiliar.

But there was something about it.

Something that made her skin crawl.

A flashlight switched on.

A man stood at the end of the corridor.

He looked almost exactly like Elena.

Same dark eyes.

Same sharp cheekbones.

Same black hair.

But he was older.

Colder.

He smiled.

“Hello, sister.”

Elena's mother began shaking.

“Victor.”

He nodded.

“Mother.”

Elena stared at him.

“You're my brother.”

Victor smiled.

“Finally.”

THE BROTHER WHO WAS ERASED

Victor walked toward them.

Elena pulled Lucia behind her.

“Don't come closer.”

He stopped.

“I won't hurt her.”

“You expect me to believe that?”

“No.”

He looked at Lucia.

“I've spent years protecting her.”

Elena frowned.

“From what?”

“From your father.”

“You worked for him.”

Victor smiled.

“Sometimes.”

“You helped him destroy me.”

“No.”

He looked directly at her.

“I helped him keep you alive.”

Elena laughed bitterly.

“You expect me to believe you saved me?”

“I did.”

“You erased my identity.”

“To prevent Alejandro from killing you.”

“You watched me lose my daughter.”

“To keep Lucia alive.”

“You let me believe my father was dead.”

“Because he wanted you to believe it.”

Elena stepped forward.

“Enough.”

Victor's smile disappeared.

“You still think Alejandro is the worst person in this story.”

Elena stared.

“He isn't?”

“No.”

“Then who is?”

Victor looked at her mother.

“Ask her.”

Elena turned.

“Mom?”

Her mother began crying.

“I didn't know.”

Victor laughed.

“You knew everything.”

THE FIRST BETRAYAL

Her mother finally collapsed into a chair.

“I was young.”

Victor stared at her.

“You were twenty-three.”

“I was afraid.”

“You sold your daughter.”

Elena froze.

“What?”

Victor continued.

“Mother made a deal with Alejandro.”

Elena's mother covered her face.

“I didn't know what he would do.”

“What deal?”

Victor looked at Elena.

“She agreed to give him the first Villeneuve heir.”

Elena's heart stopped.

“Me?”

“No.”

Victor shook his head.

“Your sister.”

“Camila.”

“Yes.”

Elena stared.

“My mother gave Camila to my father?”

“She gave Camila away because she believed Alejandro would protect her.”

Her mother sobbed.

“He promised.”

Victor laughed.

“And then he raised her to become his weapon.”

Elena turned toward her mother.

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“I was ashamed.”

“You should have been.”

Her mother looked down.

“I know.”

THE SECOND BETRAYAL

Victor's expression changed.

“But that wasn't the worst thing.”

Elena looked at him.

“What was?”

“Your mother didn't stop there.”

Elena's heart tightened.

“What did she do?”

Victor looked at Lucia.

“She gave away another child.”

Elena's face went white.

“Who?”

Victor whispered:

“Your daughter.”

Elena stepped backward.

“No.”

“Your mother took Lucia from the hospital.”

“She saved her.”

“She saved her from Alejandro.”

Elena's voice shook.

“Then what's wrong with that?”

Victor looked at her.

“She didn't take Lucia alone.”

Elena froze.

“Who helped her?”

“Your mother made a deal with Samuel.”

“What deal?”

“He agreed to hide Lucia.”

Elena swallowed.

“And in return?”

Victor's eyes hardened.

“Samuel agreed to make the world believe he was Lucia's father.”

Elena stared.

“But he was her father.”

“No.”

The room went silent.

Victor whispered:

“Samuel wasn't Lucia's biological father.”

Elena's heart stopped.

“Daniel was.”

“Yes.”

“Then why did Samuel protect her?”

“Because he loved you.”

Elena closed her eyes.

The truth was becoming unbearable.

THE NIGHT SAMUEL CHOSE TO DIE

Victor continued.

“Samuel knew Daniel was her father.”

“Then why didn't he tell me?”

“Because Daniel was being hunted.”

“By Alejandro?”

“No.”

“By Victor Rossi.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because Daniel possessed the original inheritance.”

Elena remembered the documents.

The trust.

The Vale bloodline.

Lucia's name.

Victor nodded.

“Daniel was the rightful heir.”

“Then why was Julian raised as one?”

“Because Daniel refused.”

“Refused what?”

“To become part of the family.”

Victor looked at Julian's photograph.

“He wanted a normal life.”

“And my father?”

“He couldn't allow that.”

Elena whispered:

“So Samuel died protecting him.”

“Yes.”

THE THIRD BETRAYAL

Elena looked at her mother.

“What else?”

Her mother wouldn't look at her.

“Mom.”

Silence.

“What else did you do?”

Her mother began crying.

“I erased your memory.”

Elena froze.

Victor looked away.

“I didn't know it would last this long.”

“What did you do?”

“I gave you the medication.”

Elena's voice became barely audible.

“The night I disappeared.”

“Yes.”

“You made me forget Lucia.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“To protect you.”

“You took my memories.”

“I took the worst ones.”

“You took my life.”

“I was trying to save it.”

Elena slapped her.

Her mother didn't defend herself.

“I deserved that.”

Elena's hands trembled.

“You let me wake up believing I had lost my daughter.”

“I thought you would be safer.”

“You were wrong.”

“I know.”

THE SECRET VICTOR CARRIED

Victor stepped forward.

“There is one more thing.”

Elena looked at him.

“What?”

“I wasn't working for Alejandro.”

“Then who?”

Victor looked toward the window.

“Samuel.”

Elena froze.

“Samuel was dead.”

“Yes.”

“So how?”

Victor reached into his coat.

He removed a small cassette recorder.

“I received this two days after his death.”

Elena pressed play.

Samuel's voice filled the room.

“Victor, if you're hearing this, then they believe I'm dead.”

Elena covered her mouth.

Samuel continued.

“Don't trust Alejandro.”

“Don't trust Victor Rossi.”

“And don't trust my brother.”

Victor's eyes filled with tears.

Samuel continued:

“Protect Elena.”

“Protect Lucia.”

“And if you ever have to choose…”

A pause.

“Choose Elena.”

The recording ended.

Elena stared at Victor.

“You've been protecting me?”

“For nine years.”

“Then why did you let me hate you?”

“Because hatred kept you away from me.”

“Why?”

“Because anyone close to me became a target.”

THE PHONE CALL

A phone rang.

Victor answered.

“Yes?”

His expression changed.

“What?”

He listened.

Then looked at Elena.

“He's moving.”

“Who?”

“Alejandro.”

“Where?”

“Here.”

The lights outside suddenly came on.

Cars surrounded the property.

Black SUVs.

Dozens of men.

Elena grabbed Lucia.

Victor stepped in front of them.

“Take her.”

“Where?”

“The old train station.”

“Why?”

“There's a helicopter.”

Elena shook her head.

“No.”

“You have to go.”

“I won't leave you.”

Victor smiled.

“You've been leaving people for nine years.”

His expression softened.

“Don't make me one of them.”

THE LAST BETRAYAL

They reached the garage.

A gunshot shattered the window.

Victor pushed Elena down.

“Go!”

She grabbed Lucia.

They ran.

Then a voice came through the speakers.

“Hello, Elena.”

She stopped.

Alejandro.

“I know you're listening.”

Elena looked around.

“Show yourself.”

“You always were impatient.”

“Where are you?”

“Close.”

She turned.

A man stood at the end of the driveway.

Older.

Gray hair.

Black suit.

The same eyes she remembered from childhood.

Elena couldn't breathe.

“Dad.”

Alejandro smiled.

“Hello, sweetheart.”

Lucia hid behind Elena.

Alejandro looked at the child.

“My granddaughter.”

Elena stepped in front of her.

“You will never touch her.”

Alejandro smiled.

“I don't need to.”

He raised a phone.

“I already own her.”

Elena froze.

“What?”

He pressed a button.

A document appeared on his screen.

The original inheritance agreement.

But beneath Lucia's name was another signature.

ELENA VILLENEUVE.

Elena stared.

“I never signed that.”

Alejandro smiled.

“You did.”

“When?”

“Before you disappeared.”

“That isn't my signature.”

“It is.”

He stepped closer.

“Because you weren't Elena when you signed it.”

Her blood froze.

“What does that mean?”

Alejandro whispered:

“Because the woman who disappeared nine years ago wasn't you.”

Silence.

Elena looked at her mother.

Her mother began sobbing.

Victor lowered his head.

Julian stared in horror.

Alejandro smiled.

“Now you understand.”

Elena shook her head.

“No.”

“You were replaced.”

“By whom?”

Alejandro's smile widened.

“Your sister.”

THE WOMAN WHO LOOKED LIKE ELENA

Elena couldn't speak.

Camila.

Her sister.

The woman who had lived beside her.

The woman who had betrayed her.

The woman who had pretended to be her friend.

Alejandro continued:

“Camila took your place.”

“No.”

“She signed the documents.”

“No.”

“She lived your life.”

Elena looked at her mother.

“Is it true?”

Her mother whispered:

“Yes.”

Elena felt the world collapse.

“All those years…”

“You were hidden.”

“Where?”

“Outside the country.”

“Who was with me?”

Her mother couldn't answer.

Alejandro did.

“Samuel.”

Elena's eyes widened.

“He was alive?”

“For three months.”

“Then what happened?”

Alejandro's expression hardened.

“Richard found him.”

Elena's knees weakened.

“And Lucia?”

“Samuel gave her to your mother.”

“Why?”

“To keep her away from me.”

Elena looked at Alejandro.

“You destroyed everyone.”

“No.”

He smiled.

“You destroyed yourself when you fell in love with Samuel.”

THE FINAL CHOICE

Victor raised his weapon.

Alejandro's men raised theirs.

Elena stood between them.

Lucia clung to her.

Julian stepped beside her.

Alejandro looked at him.

“You still think you're her husband?”

Julian answered:

“No.”

He looked at Elena.

“I'm the man who will protect her.”

Alejandro laughed.

“You can't even protect yourself.”

Julian didn't move.

“You're right.”

He looked at Lucia.

“But I can protect her.”

Alejandro's smile faded.

Elena finally understood.

This wasn't about the empire anymore.

It wasn't about money.

It wasn't about inheritance.

It was about Lucia.

The child everyone had lied for.

The child everyone had killed for.

The child everyone wanted to control.

Elena took her daughter's hand.

Then she looked at Alejandro.

“You want the empire?”

“Yes.”

“You can have it.”

Everyone stared.

Julian whispered:

“Elena…”

She continued.

“I'll sign everything.”

Alejandro smiled.

“Good.”

“But there's one condition.”

“What?”

“You let Lucia go.”

Alejandro laughed.

“You don't understand.”

“No.”

Elena stepped forward.

“I understand perfectly.”

She pulled out her phone.

A live-stream icon was glowing.

Alejandro's smile disappeared.

“You've been broadcasting.”

“Yes.”

The cameras around the property turned toward him.

Every word had been recorded.

Every confession.

Every threat.

Every admission.

Millions were watching.

Elena looked directly into the camera.

“My father just admitted to kidnapping, fraud, conspiracy, and the destruction of my family.”

Alejandro's face went white.

Elena smiled.

“And now the whole world knows.”

Sirens exploded in the distance.

Alejandro looked around.

His men began fleeing.

Victor lowered his weapon.

Julian stared at Elena.

“You planned this?”

“No.”

She looked at him.

“I finally learned from them.”

She raised her phone.

“Never trust a secret.”

THE LAST BETRAYAL

Alejandro was arrested before sunrise.

But Elena wasn't celebrating.

Because one person was missing.

Camila.

She had disappeared.

No one knew where she was.

Then Elena's phone received one final message.

I'm sorry.

Another:

I didn't know how to stop him.

Then:

But there is something you must know.

Elena waited.

The final message arrived.

Lucia isn't the only child Alejandro took.

Elena's heart stopped.

A photograph appeared.

A baby.

A hospital bracelet.

And a name.

ELENA VILLENEUVE — FEMALE — 1998

Elena stared.

The photograph was unmistakable.

The baby looked exactly like her.

Then another message appeared.

You were not his youngest child.

Elena's hands began trembling.

You had a twin.

She looked toward her mother.

“Mom?”

Her mother collapsed into tears.

Elena whispered:

“Where is she?”

Her mother could barely speak.

“Alejandro killed her.”

Elena stared at the photograph.

Then she noticed something.

The hospital bracelet carried a different surname.

VALE.

She looked at Victor.

He had gone completely pale.

Elena whispered:

“That's impossible.”

Victor shook his head.

“No.”

“What?”

He looked at the photograph.

Then at Elena.

“That isn't your twin.”

“Then who is she?”

Victor's voice broke.

“Samuel's daughter.”

Elena froze.

“But Lucia is Samuel's daughter.”

“No.”

Victor closed his eyes.

“Lucia is Daniel's.”

The room went silent.

Victor pointed at the photograph.

“That child…”

He whispered:

“…was Samuel's.”

Elena couldn't breathe.

A second daughter.

A hidden child.

A dead father.

Another inheritance.

Another secret.

And somewhere in the distance, an ambulance siren faded into the night.

Elena looked at Lucia.

Then at the photograph.

Her entire life had been built around one missing child.

Now she had discovered there had been another.

And if the photograph was real—

then someone had spent eighteen years making sure Elena never found her.

The last message arrived.

SHE ISN'T DEAD.

Elena's blood ran cold.

FIND HER BEFORE ALEJANDRO DOES.

She looked at the sunrise.

For the first time, she understood that the war was not over.

The empire had fallen.

The conspirators were exposed.

But the greatest secret of the Villeneuve family had only just been uncovered.

May you like

And somewhere in the world…

a woman with Elena's face was waiting for her to come home.
