Chapter 10 — The Housekeeper’s Daughter Was the Target

Chapter 10 — The Housekeeper’s Daughter Was the Target
“Daddy?”
The single word shattered Adrian.
He stood frozen in the doorway.
For three years, he had dreamed of hearing that voice.
He had imagined it in empty rooms, in nightmares, in the moments before sleep.
But dreams were supposed to fade when you opened your eyes.
This one didn't.
A small figure stepped out of the darkness.
Dark curls.
Pale face.
A faded yellow sweater.
And eyes Adrian knew better than his own.
“Lily?”
The girl smiled through tears.
“Daddy.”
Adrian dropped to his knees.
She ran into his arms.
He held her so tightly that she began laughing and crying at the same time.
“I knew you'd come.”
Adrian couldn't speak.
He buried his face in her hair.
For three years, he had blamed himself for failing to save her.
Now his daughter was alive.
But something was wrong.
She was too thin.
Too quiet.
And she kept looking over Adrian's shoulder.
At Ellie.
The Two Girls
Lily finally pulled away.
Her eyes settled on the little girl standing beside Daniel.
“Ellie.”
Ellie stared.
“You know me?”
Lily nodded.
“I've been waiting for you.”
Adrian looked between them.
“How?”
Lily pointed toward the rabbit.
“Rosie.”
Ellie hugged the stuffed rabbit.
“She remembers everything.”
Adrian frowned.
“Everything about what?”
Lily's expression became serious.
“The night they took me.”
Daniel stepped forward.
“Who took you?”
Lily looked at Vincent.
The old butler lowered his head.
“He did.”
Adrian turned.
“Vincent?”
Lily nodded.
“But he didn't want to hurt me.”
Vincent's eyes filled with tears.
“I was ordered to take her.”
“By whom?”
Lily whispered:
“Grandfather.”
The Target
Adrian's expression hardened.
“My father.”
Lily shook her head.
“No.”
“Then who?”
She looked at Ellie.
“Her father.”
Adrian froze.
“Daniel?”
Daniel's face went pale.
“What?”
Lily stepped closer to Ellie.
“They weren't looking for me.”
Adrian's voice became quiet.
“Then who were they looking for?”
Lily pointed at Ellie.
“They wanted her.”
Silence filled the room.
Hannah's daughter.
The housekeeper's little girl.
The child Adrian had barely noticed until she saved his life.
The child everyone had been searching for.
Lily continued.
“They thought Ellie was the only one who could open the trust.”
Daniel looked at Adrian.
“That means they don't know the truth.”
“What truth?”
Lily answered.
“Ellie isn't the key.”
She pointed to herself.
“I am.”
The Children’s Trust
Daniel stared at Lily.
“How?”
Lily explained what Elena had taught her.
The trust was never designed to transfer ownership based simply on blood.
It required two living witnesses.
Two children.
One connected to Daniel.
One connected to the Moretti family.
Ellie was the first.
Lily was the second.
Neither girl could unlock the evidence alone.
Together, they could.
Adrian finally understood why his father had kept Lily alive.
Why Vincent had hidden her.
Why someone had hunted Ellie.
Why the photographs had followed them for years.
“They need both of you.”
Lily nodded.
“Yes.”
Adrian stood.
“Then they'll never get you.”
Lily looked at him.
“They already have someone.”
“Who?”
She pointed toward the door.
“The woman with the red scarf.”
The Woman in Red
Daniel immediately recognized the description.
“Rebecca Shaw?”
Lily shook her head.
“No.”
“Who is she?”
Lily hesitated.
“She used to visit me.”
“Where?”
“The house without windows.”
Adrian knelt.
“What did she want?”
“She asked me questions.”
“About Ellie?”
“Yes.”
“What questions?”
Lily looked frightened.
“She wanted to know where Mommy hid her.”
Adrian's heart sank.
“Where did Elena hide Ellie?”
Lily looked at Hannah.
Hannah covered her mouth.
“I never told anyone.”
Lily nodded.
“Mommy never told anyone.”
Adrian frowned.
“Then how did they find Ellie?”
Lily whispered:
“They didn't.”
Everyone fell silent.
“They found you because you saved Adrian.”
Hannah looked at Ellie.
“What?”
Lily pointed toward the pink backpack.
“The camera.”
Adrian looked at the backpack.
“What camera?”
Lily explained.
“Someone put a tiny camera inside Ellie's rabbit.”
Ellie immediately hugged Rosie.
“No!”
Adrian took the rabbit carefully.
Daniel examined the seams.
Then found it.
A tiny black lens.
Adrian's face darkened.
“They've been watching her.”
Lily nodded.
“Since she was a baby.”
The Second Device
Daniel removed the camera.
Then stopped.
“There is another one.”
He pointed toward Ellie's backpack.
Inside the pink fabric was a second device.
Adrian stared at it.
Two cameras.
One hidden in the rabbit.
One hidden in the backpack.
Hannah began shaking.
“Who gave her the backpack?”
Adrian looked at her.
“You did?”
“No.”
“Then who?”
Hannah thought.
“Vincent.”
Every eye turned toward him.
Vincent didn't deny it.
“I was told to give it to her.”
“By whom?”
He looked at Lily.
“The woman in red.”
Adrian's jaw tightened.
“You've been working for her.”
Vincent shook his head.
“No.”
“Then why?”
“Because she threatened Lily.”
Adrian stepped toward him.
“You could have told me.”
“She told me she would kill Lily if I did.”
Lily lowered her eyes.
“She was lying.”
Vincent stared at her.
“How do you know?”
“Because she wanted me alive.”
The Real Plan
Daniel opened the old ledger.
The evidence was becoming clear.
The organization had never intended to kill the children.
They intended to use them.
The trust could expose decades of financial crimes.
But the evidence couldn't be accessed without both beneficiaries.
The people behind the operation needed Lily and Ellie alive.
That was why the bombing had been staged.
Why Lily had been hidden.
Why Elena had disappeared.
Why Daniel had stayed away.
And why Adrian had been allowed to survive.
He wasn't the target.
He was the bait.
Adrian finally understood.
“They wanted me to find Ellie.”
Daniel nodded.
“They knew you'd protect her.”
“And that would lead me to Lily.”
“Yes.”
Adrian looked at the two girls.
“Then we've been walking into their trap.”
Lily shook her head.
“No.”
Everyone looked at her.
“They made one mistake.”
“What mistake?”
Lily smiled.
“They forgot about Mommy.”
Elena
Adrian's heart stopped.
“Elena?”
Lily nodded.
“She isn't dead.”
Hannah began crying.
“I knew it.”
Adrian stared at Lily.
“Where is she?”
“I don't know.”
“But you've seen her.”
“Yes.”
“When?”
“Last week.”
Adrian almost couldn't stand.
“Where?”
Lily pointed to the old house.
“She came to see me.”
“Why didn't she take you?”
“She said it wasn't safe.”
“What did she tell you?”
Lily looked toward Ellie.
“She said the bad people were getting closer.”
“Who?”
Lily whispered:
“Your father.”
Adrian shook his head.
“My father is behind everything.”
“No.”
Lily's eyes filled with tears.
“He's being controlled.”
Daniel stared.
“By whom?”
Lily answered:
“The woman in red.”
The Woman's Name
Vincent suddenly sat down.
His hands were trembling.
“I know who she is.”
Adrian turned.
“Who?”
Vincent looked at the two girls.
“Her name is Evelyn Moretti.”
Daniel's face went white.
“That can't be.”
Adrian stared.
“Who is Evelyn?”
Vincent swallowed.
“Your father's sister.”
Daniel whispered:
“She died.”
“No.”
Vincent shook his head.
“She disappeared.”
Adrian remembered the old family photographs.
A young woman.
Standing beside his father.
A woman whose face had been cut out of several pictures.
The same face he had seen in the damaged photograph.
The woman with the red scarf.
Evelyn.
His father's sister.
The woman who had controlled the hidden network from the shadows.
The woman who had been searching for Ellie.
The Phone
Adrian's phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
A woman's voice spoke.
“Adrian.”
He recognized it.
“Evelyn.”
She laughed softly.
“So you've finally learned my name.”
“Where is Elena?”
“Safe.”
“Where?”
“Would you like to see her?”
Adrian's grip tightened.
“Yes.”
“Then bring me the girls.”
“No.”
“Then Elena dies.”
Adrian went silent.
Evelyn continued.
“You have until sunrise.”
“Why Ellie?”
“Because she belongs to Daniel.”
“She is a child.”
“She is evidence.”
“She's innocent.”
“So was Lily.”
Adrian's heart stopped.
Evelyn whispered:
“You already lost one daughter.”
“Don't threaten her.”
“I'm not threatening.”
A pause.
“I'm reminding you.”
The call ended.
The Choice
Adrian looked at Lily.
Then Ellie.
Daniel stepped closer.
“We need a plan.”
Adrian nodded.
But Lily spoke first.
“No.”
Everyone looked at her.
“She wants us to come to her.”
“Yes.”
“Then we should.”
Adrian shook his head.
“Absolutely not.”
Lily took his hand.
“Daddy.”
He looked at her.
“I've been hiding for three years.”
She smiled.
“I don't want to hide anymore.”
Ellie stepped beside her.
“I don't either.”
The two girls stood together.
One had survived a fake death.
The other had unknowingly become the target of a criminal empire.
Neither was willing to run.
Adrian looked at them.
Then at Daniel.
Then at Vincent.
Finally, he understood something.
Evelyn believed children were weaknesses.
She believed fear made people controllable.
She believed power belonged to whoever frightened others the most.
She had made one mistake.
She had underestimated the people she was trying to protect.
Adrian picked up his coat.
“Then we go.”
Daniel nodded.
“But we don't bring the girls as prisoners.”
Adrian looked at him.
“We bring them as witnesses.”
Lily smiled.
Ellie hugged Rosie.
Outside, dawn was beginning to appear.
But before they could leave, a car stopped outside the estate.
Everyone froze.
A woman stepped out.
Red scarf.
Black coat.
Silver hair.
She walked toward the front door without hesitation.
Adrian reached for his weapon.
The woman looked through the glass.
And smiled.
Then she held up a photograph.
Adrian stared.
It showed Elena.
Alive.
Standing beside a hospital bed.
And lying in that bed was a man Adrian had believed dead for twelve years.
His father.
The photograph had been taken yesterday.
A message was written across the bottom:
Bring me the girls, Adrian.
Or the last person who can tell you why Lily was taken dies next.
Adrian's face went cold.
Because he finally understood.
The night Lily was taken had never been about killing a child.
It had been about creating a hostage.
May you like
And now the woman behind it all had something far more powerful than money.
She had the entire Moretti family trapped in the same room.
