Chapter 3 — The Butler’s Perfect Lie

Chapter 3 — The Butler’s Perfect Lie

For three years, Adrian Moretti had believed his wife was dead.

Now a housekeeper was standing in front of him, telling him the impossible.

“Elena is alive.”

The words refused to make sense.

Adrian stared at Hannah.

“Say it again.”

Hannah's lips trembled.

“Elena is alive.”

“Where is she?”

“I don't know.”

“You've seen her.”

Hannah looked away.

“Not recently.”

Adrian stepped closer.

“When?”

“Three years ago.”

His face hardened.

“After the bombing?”

“Yes.”

“Then why did you let me bury an empty coffin?”

Hannah's eyes filled with tears.

“Because I was told you would kill her if you knew she survived.”

Adrian froze.

“I would never hurt my wife.”

“I know that now.”

“And who told you otherwise?”

Hannah didn't answer.

Adrian's voice dropped.

“Who?”

Before she could respond, a glass shattered somewhere upstairs.

Everyone turned.

The Empty Hallway

Marcus appeared with two guards.

“Sir?”

Adrian pointed toward the staircase.

“Check the second floor.”

The guards moved immediately.

Hannah grabbed Ellie's hand.

“Stay with me.”

Ellie clutched Rosie.

Adrian watched the hallway.

Nothing.

No footsteps.

No movement.

Then Marcus returned.

“Nothing.”

Adrian's eyes narrowed.

“Search Lily's room.”

Marcus hesitated.

“Sir?”

“Now.”

The guards entered.

Seconds later, one shouted.

“Mr. Moretti!”

Adrian rushed upstairs.

A window in Lily's bedroom stood open.

The curtains moved in the cold air.

On the floor was a single black envelope.

Adrian picked it up.

Inside was a photograph.

Elena.

Alive.

Standing beside a car.

Taken only two weeks earlier.

On the back were five words.

Ask your butler what he knows.

Adrian slowly looked toward Vincent.

The old butler stood at the end of the hallway.

His face had gone completely white.

Vincent's Silence

Adrian held up the photograph.

“Did you know?”

Vincent didn't answer.

“Did you know Elena was alive?”

Still nothing.

Adrian walked toward him.

“You've served this family for nineteen years.”

Vincent lowered his eyes.

“And you knew my wife was alive.”

“I suspected.”

“Don't lie to me.”

Vincent looked up.

“I was protecting her.”

Adrian's voice became cold.

“From me?”

“No.”

“Then from whom?”

Vincent hesitated.

“The same people who killed Lily.”

The hallway became silent.

Adrian felt something inside him crack.

“You said the bombing wasn't meant to kill Elena.”

“It wasn't.”

“Then what happened?”

Vincent shook his head.

“You aren't ready.”

Adrian laughed bitterly.

“Ready?”

He pointed toward the photograph.

“My wife has been alive for three years.”

He stepped closer.

“My daughter may have been murdered for a reason you know.”

“And you're telling me I'm not ready?”

Vincent's eyes filled with tears.

“I've spent three years praying you would never learn the truth.”

“Why?”

“Because once you do, they will come for you.”

Adrian stared.

“Who are they?”

Vincent whispered:

“The people who own this house.”

Adrian frowned.

“I own this house.”

Vincent shook his head.

“No, sir.”

He looked around the mansion.

“You only think you do.”

The Hidden Account

Adrian ordered Marcus to lock down the estate.

No one entered.

No one left.

Then he returned to his study.

Vincent followed.

“Tell me everything.”

The butler remained silent.

Adrian opened a drawer.

Inside was a handgun.

He placed it on the desk.

Vincent looked at it.

“You won't need that.”

“I hope not.”

Adrian sat.

“Start with Elena.”

Vincent took a breath.

“Three years ago, Elena discovered a financial account.”

“Whose?”

“Yours.”

Adrian frowned.

“I have hundreds.”

“This one wasn't supposed to exist.”

“What was in it?”

“Payments.”

“To whom?”

“People connected to the bombing.”

Adrian stared at him.

“I didn't authorize those payments.”

“I know.”

“Then who did?”

Vincent looked toward the door.

“Someone with access to your private accounts.”

Adrian's eyes narrowed.

“Who?”

Vincent whispered:

“Your attorney.”

The Attorney

Adrian immediately called his legal office.

No answer.

He called again.

Nothing.

Marcus entered.

“Sir.”

“What?”

“The attorney's office has been emptied.”

Adrian's expression changed.

“When?”

“According to the building manager, sometime last night.”

“His house?”

“Empty.”

“Car?”

“Gone.”

Adrian leaned back.

Someone was moving faster than he was.

That was unusual.

Very unusual.

Then his phone rang.

Unknown number.

Adrian answered.

“Who is this?”

A woman's voice replied.

“You shouldn't trust Vincent.”

Adrian's eyes moved toward the butler.

“Who are you?”

“You've already met me.”

The call ended.

Adrian stared at the phone.

Vincent asked:

“Who was it?”

Adrian didn't answer.

Then Ellie appeared in the doorway.

“Mr. Moretti?”

Adrian looked at her.

“Yes?”

“Can I tell you something?”

“Of course.”

She walked closer.

“Vincent was talking to a man yesterday.”

Vincent froze.

Adrian looked at him.

“What man?”

Ellie pointed toward the service corridor.

“The man with the silver ring.”

The Silver Ring

Adrian turned toward Vincent.

“You never mentioned him.”

Vincent's face tightened.

“I didn't know who he was.”

“Ellie saw him.”

“I didn't know she was watching.”

Adrian looked at the child.

“What did he look like?”

Ellie thought.

“He was tall.”

“Hair?”

“Gray.”

“Eyes?”

“Brown.”

“Anything else?”

She nodded.

“He had a snake on his ring.”

Adrian went completely still.

He knew that symbol.

He had seen it once.

Years ago.

On a man named Victor Hale.

A former financial adviser who had disappeared after Elena's death.

Adrian stood.

“Marcus.”

“Yes?”

“Find Victor Hale.”

Marcus hesitated.

“Sir, Victor Hale died six years ago.”

Adrian looked at him.

“No.”

He pointed at the photograph of Elena.

“If Elena is alive, then the dead aren't necessarily dead.”

Vincent's Perfect Lie

That evening, Adrian returned to the study.

Vincent was waiting.

“You lied to me.”

Vincent looked exhausted.

“Yes.”

“About Elena.”

“Yes.”

“About Victor.”

Vincent closed his eyes.

“Yes.”

“About the sedative.”

“Yes.”

Adrian's voice hardened.

“What else?”

Vincent didn't answer.

Adrian stood.

“You have one chance.”

Vincent looked at him.

“The poison wasn't meant to kill you.”

“I know.”

“It was meant to make you unconscious.”

“I know.”

“Then why did I nearly die?”

Vincent's voice trembled.

“Because I didn't put the poison in your wine.”

Adrian frowned.

“You just told me you did.”

“I lied.”

“Why?”

“Because I wanted you to believe I was guilty.”

Adrian stared.

“Why would you do that?”

Vincent slowly reached into his coat.

Marcus immediately raised his weapon.

“Don't move!”

Vincent stopped.

He pulled out a small envelope.

“Read this.”

Adrian took it.

Inside was a letter.

The handwriting was unmistakable.

Elena.

Adrian read the first line.

Adrian, if you're reading this, Vincent has finally told you the lie I asked him to tell.

His hands began to shake.

Elena's Letter

I am alive.

Adrian stopped reading.

His vision blurred.

He forced himself onward.

I didn't die in the bombing. Lily did.

His chest tightened.

I survived because someone pulled me from the wreckage.

I wanted to come back.

But then I learned what had really happened.

Adrian's fingers trembled.

The bomb wasn't intended for you.

It was intended for Lily.

Adrian dropped the letter.

The room seemed to disappear.

Lily.

His daughter.

His little girl.

The target.

Not collateral damage.

The target.

He looked at Vincent.

“Why?”

Vincent lowered his head.

“Because Lily inherited something.”

“What?”

“The Moretti bloodline wasn't the important part.”

Adrian's eyes hardened.

“Then what was?”

Vincent whispered:

“Her mother.”

The Truth About Elena

Adrian stared at him.

“What did Elena have?”

“A ledger.”

“Financial?”

“No.”

“Then what?”

“Names.”

“Whose names?”

“Everyone involved.”

Adrian suddenly understood.

Elena hadn't been killed because of him.

She had been hunted because she knew who controlled the network.

And Lily had been killed because she was the easiest way to silence her.

“Where is Elena now?”

Vincent shook his head.

“I don't know.”

“You're lying again.”

“No.”

“Then why does she keep sending me messages?”

Vincent looked genuinely confused.

“She does?”

Adrian nodded.

Vincent's face changed.

“Then she's closer than I thought.”

The Perfect Lie Falls Apart

A noise came from the hallway.

Ellie screamed.

“Mommy!”

Hannah rushed toward her.

Adrian ran out.

Ellie stood near the staircase, pointing toward the front door.

A black sedan was disappearing through the gates.

Hannah grabbed her daughter.

“What happened?”

Ellie pointed.

“The lady.”

Adrian looked at her.

“What lady?”

“The lady who looks like the picture.”

His heart stopped.

“Elena?”

Ellie nodded.

“She was here.”

Adrian ran to the door.

The gates were already closing.

He reached them seconds too late.

The car vanished into the night.

But something had been left behind.

A small white envelope.

Adrian opened it.

One sentence.

You have been looking for me in the wrong place.

Beneath it was an address.

Adrian recognized it immediately.

The abandoned warehouse where Lily's belongings had been stored after the bombing.

His blood ran cold.

Then he noticed one final line.

Come alone.

Adrian stared into the darkness.

For three years, he had believed he was hunting the truth.

Now he realized something far worse.

The truth had been hunting him.

And Vincent's perfect lie had not been designed to hide Elena.

It had been designed to protect Adrian from the person who was still watching them.

The person who had ordered the bombing.

May you like

The person who knew about Ellie.

And the person who had just learned that Adrian was finally getting close.
