Chapter 6 — The Man Who Wanted Adrian Dead

Chapter 6 — The Man Who Wanted Adrian Dead

Adrian Moretti stared at the message until the words blurred.

COME ALONE, LITTLE BROTHER.

For thirty years, he had believed Daniel Moretti was dead.

For three years, he had believed Elena and Lily were dead.

Now all three ghosts had returned.

And every one of them seemed connected to Ellie Carter.

Adrian folded the paper and slipped it into his pocket.

Hannah watched him from across the room.

“Are you going after him?”

“Yes.”

“Alone?”

“That is what he asked.”

Hannah shook her head.

“That is exactly what someone dangerous would ask.”

Adrian looked at her.

“You're right.”

He picked up his coat.

“So I'll make sure he doesn't know I'm coming.”

The Warehouse

The address led Adrian to an abandoned warehouse near Red Hook.

He arrived shortly after midnight.

He left his car three blocks away.

No guards.

No visible security.

No weapons.

At least, none that he could see.

The warehouse smelled of rust and seawater.

Adrian entered through a broken side door.

“Daniel?”

His voice echoed.

Nothing.

Then the lights came on.

One by one.

At the far end of the warehouse stood a man.

Older.

Thinner.

Gray hair.

A scar crossed his left cheek.

But the eyes were unmistakable.

Adrian stopped.

“Daniel.”

The man smiled sadly.

“Little brother.”

Adrian felt thirty years collapse into one second.

He wanted to run toward him.

He wanted to punch him.

He wanted answers.

Instead, he asked:

“Why did you let me believe you were dead?”

Daniel's smile disappeared.

“Because our father wanted me dead.”

“And you?”

“I wanted you alive.”

Adrian stepped closer.

“You let me mourn you.”

“I know.”

“You watched my life from a distance.”

“Yes.”

“You knew about Ellie.”

“Yes.”

“You knew Lily was going to die.”

Daniel's face broke.

“No.”

Adrian stared.

“I didn't know.”

“You expect me to believe that?”

“I tried to stop it.”

“Then why didn't you?”

Daniel looked away.

“Because I was already too late.”

The Truth About the Bomb

Daniel walked toward a wooden table.

On it lay photographs, documents, and newspaper clippings.

He pointed to one.

The restaurant where Elena and Lily had died.

“This wasn't an attack on you.”

“I know.”

Daniel shook his head.

“No. You don't.”

He placed another photograph beside it.

A man standing outside the restaurant.

Adrian recognized him.

“Your security chief?”

Daniel nodded.

“He wasn't protecting you.”

Adrian's face hardened.

“What was he doing?”

“Watching Lily.”

“Why?”

“Because Lily had something.”

“The trust.”

“No.”

Daniel pointed to the photograph of Ellie.

“She had this.”

Adrian stared.

“What?”

“A key.”

Adrian reached into his pocket.

The small metal key Ellie had given him.

Daniel's expression changed.

“You found it.”

“Ellie did.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Then they know.”

“Who?”

“The people who have been looking for her.”

Adrian's voice became cold.

“Tell me their names.”

Daniel shook his head.

“Not yet.”

Adrian grabbed his collar.

“I've buried my wife and daughter.”

Daniel didn't resist.

“You don't get to tell me what I can handle.”

“I know.”

“Then talk.”

Daniel looked directly into his eyes.

“The man who ordered the bombing is still alive.”

Adrian released him.

“Who?”

Daniel whispered:

“Vincent.”

The Butler

Adrian froze.

“Vincent Bellini?”

Daniel nodded.

“No.”

“You trust him.”

“He raised me.”

“That's why he was useful.”

Adrian shook his head.

“Vincent protected Ellie.”

“He protected himself.”

“He told me about the sedative.”

“He wanted you to suspect him.”

“Why?”

“To control where you looked.”

Adrian remembered the envelope.

The recordings.

The warnings.

Everything suddenly felt uncertain.

Daniel continued.

“Vincent has been inside this family for forty years.”

“He loved Lily.”

“Maybe.”

“He mourned her.”

“Maybe.”

“He risked his life for me.”

Daniel stared at him.

“Did he?”

Adrian didn't answer.

Daniel leaned forward.

“The most dangerous man in your house isn't the man carrying a gun.”

“Then who?”

“The man you don't think you need to fear.”

The First Shot

A gunshot shattered the silence.

Daniel pushed Adrian down.

The bullet struck the metal beam behind them.

Adrian reached for his weapon.

Another shot.

Daniel dragged him behind a concrete pillar.

“Sniper.”

“Who?”

“Not important.”

Adrian looked at him.

“Not important?”

“They aren't trying to kill me.”

A third bullet hit the floor.

Daniel whispered:

“They're trying to kill you.”

Adrian looked toward the upper windows.

“Why?”

“Because you know about Ellie.”

Adrian's expression hardened.

“Who sent them?”

Daniel stared at him.

“The man who has wanted you dead since you were a child.”

The Forgotten Brother

Daniel pulled Adrian through a narrow passage.

They reached a back room.

Daniel locked the door.

Adrian was furious.

“You keep saying things without explaining them.”

Daniel turned.

“Our father didn't erase me because I was a traitor.”

“Why?”

“Because I found out what he was doing.”

“Which was?”

“Selling information.”

“To whom?”

“The highest bidder.”

Adrian stared.

“Information about what?”

“Everything.”

Shipping routes.

Police investigations.

Judicial decisions.

Political donations.

Private bank accounts.

And eventually—

children.

Adrian's face changed.

“What does that mean?”

Daniel's voice became quiet.

“Our family wasn't just involved in organized crime.”

He looked at his brother.

“They were building a network that specialized in controlling people.”

Adrian remembered Elena's fear.

Lily's death.

Ellie's disappearance.

The hidden accounts.

The photographs.

He finally understood why his father had been so obsessed with control.

He hadn't built an empire.

He had built a machine.

The List

Daniel opened a metal case.

Inside was a list of names.

Judges.

Police officers.

Doctors.

Businessmen.

Lawyers.

Government officials.

Adrian scanned the pages.

“This is impossible.”

“No.”

Daniel pointed to one name.

Adrian recognized it.

His own attorney.

Another.

A judge who had handled Moretti cases.

Another.

The doctor who signed Lily's death certificate.

Adrian's face went pale.

“All of them?”

“Not all willingly.”

“What happened to the ones who refused?”

Daniel didn't answer.

He didn't need to.

Adrian looked at the list again.

Then he saw a familiar name.

Vincent Bellini.

Beside it was a handwritten note.

PRIMARY COORDINATOR — FAMILY OPERATIONS

Adrian's stomach turned.

“No.”

Daniel watched him.

“You finally understand.”

The Hidden Phone

Daniel took out an old phone.

“This belonged to Elena.”

Adrian stared.

“She gave it to me before the bombing.”

“Why didn't you give it to me?”

“Because you weren't ready.”

“Stop saying that.”

Daniel looked at him.

“You were running the same organization that killed her.”

Adrian recoiled.

“I didn't know.”

“You didn't ask.”

The words hurt.

Because they were true.

Daniel continued.

“Your father taught you that power meant never questioning the people beneath you.”

Adrian remembered.

His father's lessons.

His childhood.

The punishments.

The rules.

Never show weakness.

Never question family.

Never trust outsiders.

And above all—

never say Daniel's name.

Daniel handed him the phone.

“There is one recording.”

Adrian pressed play.

Elena's voice filled the room.

“Adrian, if you hear this, I need you to understand something.”

Static.

“I didn't leave you.”

A pause.

“I left because someone inside the house betrayed us.”

Another pause.

“I know who.”

Adrian's hands shook.

Elena continued.

“And if Lily is gone, then the person who betrayed us will come for Ellie next.”

The recording ended.

Adrian looked at Daniel.

“Who was she talking about?”

Daniel didn't answer.

Adrian's voice became a whisper.

“Vincent?”

Daniel shook his head.

“No.”

“Then who?”

Daniel looked toward the locked door.

“The man who hired Vincent.”

The Man Behind Vincent

Adrian's phone rang.

Hannah.

He answered immediately.

“Where are you?”

Her voice was shaking.

“Adrian…”

“What's wrong?”

“I can't find Ellie.”

His blood froze.

“What?”

“She was in the bedroom.”

“Where is she?”

“I don't know.”

Adrian looked at Daniel.

Daniel's face had gone pale.

“Someone took her.”

Hannah was crying.

“The security cameras are down.”

Adrian closed his eyes.

“How long?”

“Twenty minutes.”

Daniel whispered:

“They're already here.”

Adrian turned.

“Who?”

Daniel looked at him.

“The man who wanted you dead.”

Adrian's phone beeped.

A message appeared.

A photograph.

Ellie.

Sitting in a dark room.

Her pink backpack was beside her.

Rosie was in her arms.

She wasn't crying.

She was looking directly into the camera.

Beneath the photograph were six words.

YOU SHOULD HAVE STAYED AWAY, ADRIAN.

Adrian's blood ran cold.

Then another message appeared.

YOUR BROTHER KNOWS WHERE WE ARE.

Daniel stared at the screen.

His expression changed.

“They found me.”

Adrian looked at him.

“Who?”

Daniel whispered:

“The man who killed our father.”

Adrian's eyes widened.

“Our father died twelve years ago.”

Daniel nodded.

“Exactly.”

He looked toward the warehouse doors.

“He didn't.”

Adrian felt the world tilt.

“What are you saying?”

Daniel's voice dropped.

“Our father is alive.”

The Call

The phone rang again.

Unknown number.

Adrian answered.

A man's voice came through.

Old.

Calm.

Familiar.

“Hello, Adrian.”

Adrian couldn't breathe.

He knew that voice.

He had heard it every night as a child.

His father's voice.

“Where is Ellie?”

A quiet laugh.

“You sound exactly like I remember.”

“Where is she?”

“Safe.”

“Let her go.”

“Not yet.”

Adrian's hand tightened around the phone.

“What do you want?”

“Your empire.”

“You can have it.”

“No.”

A pause.

“I want something far more valuable.”

“What?”

“The key.”

Adrian looked at Daniel.

The little metal key was still in his pocket.

His father's voice continued.

“Bring it to me.”

“And Ellie?”

“She comes home.”

“Where?”

The old man gave him an address.

Adrian recognized it.

The original Moretti estate.

The mansion where his father had raised him.

The place Adrian had abandoned after his father's death.

“Come alone.”

Adrian laughed bitterly.

“You've already taken my family.”

“No.”

The voice became cold.

“Your family was taken years ago.”

The call ended.

Daniel stared at Adrian.

“What did he say?”

Adrian looked at him.

“He wants the key.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Then we have a problem.”

“Why?”

“Because that key doesn't open a door.”

Adrian frowned.

“What does it open?”

Daniel looked toward the warehouse exit.

“A grave.”

Adrian's face changed.

“Whose?”

Daniel whispered:

“Lily's.”

The two brothers stood in silence.

For three decades, the Moretti family had buried its secrets.

Now one of those secrets was waiting beneath Lily's grave.

And somewhere in the darkness, the man who had wanted Adrian dead since childhood was holding a four-year-old girl with a pink backpack.

This time, Adrian wasn't fighting for an empire.

May you like

He was fighting for Ellie.

And for the first time in his life, he had no intention of losing.
