Chapter 13 — The Night the Mansion Burned

Chapter 13 — The Night the Mansion Burned
The gunshot came from upstairs.
For one terrible second, nobody moved.
Then the fire alarm screamed.
Red lights flashed across the hallway.
Smoke began pouring beneath the study door.
“Fire!” Daniel shouted.
Adrian grabbed Ellie with one arm and Lily with the other.
“Mara, stay with Daniel!”
But Mara was already running toward the stairs.
“Lily!”
Lily grabbed her hand.
“We have to go!”
Behind them, Evelyn stood motionless.
Her red scarf caught the first orange glow.
Adrian turned toward her.
“You did this.”
Evelyn smiled.
“No.”
She looked toward the burning study.
“He did.”
A shadow appeared through the smoke.
Adrian's father stepped into the hallway.
Alive.
Holding a lighter.
And smiling.
The Man Who Started the Fire
“You always were too sentimental, Adrian.”
Adrian stared at him.
“You killed Lily.”
His father shook his head.
“I saved her.”
“You destroyed my family.”
“No.”
The old man looked at the three girls.
“I created your family.”
Adrian raised his weapon.
“Put the lighter down.”
His father laughed.
“You think this fire matters?”
He dropped the lighter.
It landed on the carpet.
Flames spread instantly.
“The house was always disposable.”
Daniel pulled Mara away.
“Everyone out!”
But Adrian didn't move.
He stared at his father.
“You're not leaving.”
His father smiled.
“Neither are you.”
Then the ceiling cracked.
A burning beam collapsed between them.
Adrian jumped backward.
The smoke became almost impossible to see through.
“Lily!”
“I'm here!”
Adrian heard her voice.
Then Ellie screamed.
“Mr. Moretti!”
He turned.
A section of the floor had collapsed.
Ellie was hanging onto the edge.
Adrian dropped to his knees.
“Hold on!”
He grabbed her wrist.
Daniel reached him.
Together they pulled her up.
Ellie began coughing.
“Where's Lily?”
Adrian looked around.
Lily was gone.
The Burning Hallway
“Lily!”
No answer.
Adrian ran back into the smoke.
Daniel grabbed his shoulder.
“You can't go in there.”
“My daughter is inside.”
“The roof is coming down.”
Adrian shoved him away.
“I lost her once.”
He disappeared into the flames.
Daniel followed.
They reached Lily's bedroom.
The door was open.
Inside, Lily was standing beside the old photograph.
She wasn't crying.
She was staring at something behind the bed.
“Lily!”
She turned.
“Daddy!”
Adrian ran to her.
“What are you doing?”
“I found it.”
“Found what?”
She held up a small metal box.
“The rest of Mommy's secret.”
Adrian grabbed her hand.
“We're leaving.”
“But Daddy—”
“No arguments.”
He carried her.
The ceiling groaned.
A wall exploded behind them.
They ran.
The Secret Box
Outside, firefighters were approaching the estate.
The mansion burned behind them.
Hannah rushed toward Ellie.
“My baby!”
Ellie ran into her mother's arms.
Adrian emerged carrying Lily.
Elena stood nearby.
For a moment, mother and daughter stared at each other.
Then Elena ran forward.
“Lily!”
Lily jumped into her arms.
They held each other.
Adrian watched silently.
For three years, he had imagined his family dead.
Now two children stood alive before him.
His wife stood alive.
His brother stood beside him.
And yet the danger wasn't over.
Because his father had escaped.
Evelyn was gone.
And the evidence was burning.
Adrian looked at Lily.
“What did you find?”
She pointed to the metal box.
“The truth.”
The Final Ledger
Inside the box was a small recording device.
A handwritten list.
And a photograph.
The photograph showed seven children.
Four were crossed out.
Three remained.
Lily.
Mara.
Ellie.
The list contained names.
Politicians.
Judges.
Bankers.
Police officials.
Businessmen.
And at the bottom—
Adrian Moretti.
Adrian stared at his own name.
Daniel stepped beside him.
“They intended to make you the final witness.”
Adrian frowned.
“What does that mean?”
Elena answered.
“They wanted you to inherit everything.”
“And then?”
“They wanted you to take responsibility for everything.”
Adrian understood.
His father hadn't simply wanted a successor.
He wanted a scapegoat.
If the empire collapsed, Adrian would take the fall.
Every crime.
Every payment.
Every disappearance.
Every murder.
The children were evidence.
The trust was the trap.
And Adrian had been the final piece.
Vincent's Last Confession
Vincent approached slowly.
His shirt was still stained with blood.
Adrian looked at him.
“You knew.”
Vincent nodded.
“I knew enough.”
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“Because I was afraid.”
“Of Evelyn?”
Vincent shook his head.
“Of myself.”
Adrian frowned.
Vincent looked toward the burning mansion.
“I spent twenty-two years serving your father.”
“You helped him.”
“Yes.”
“I can't forgive that.”
“I don't expect you to.”
Vincent reached into his coat.
He pulled out a small photograph.
Adrian recognized the scene.
Lily.
Elena.
Mara.
And Vincent.
Taken three weeks after the bombing.
But there was something else.
A fourth person stood in the background.
A young man.
Adrian stared.
“Who is that?”
Vincent whispered:
“Your father's first son.”
Daniel froze.
“What?”
Vincent looked at him.
“You weren't the first.”
Adrian's face hardened.
“Who was?”
Vincent looked toward the burning mansion.
“Jonathan.”
The Forgotten Brother
Adrian had never heard the name.
Neither had Daniel.
Vincent explained.
Jonathan had been born before Adrian.
He had disappeared at nineteen.
Officially, he had died in a boating accident.
But the records were fake.
Jonathan had discovered the children's program.
He tried to expose it.
His father stopped him.
“Where is he now?” Daniel asked.
Vincent shook his head.
“I don't know.”
Adrian looked at the photograph.
“Then why is he with Lily?”
Vincent didn't answer.
Lily did.
“He helped me escape.”
Adrian turned.
“When?”
“The first time.”
“Where did he take you?”
“To Mommy.”
Adrian looked at Elena.
She nodded.
“Jonathan found me after the bombing.”
“Then why didn't you tell me?”
“Because he made me promise.”
“Why?”
“Because your father was searching for us.”
Adrian stared at the burning mansion.
“So Jonathan is alive.”
“Yes.”
“And he knows everything.”
Elena whispered:
“Yes.”
The Mansion Collapses
A deafening roar interrupted them.
The roof collapsed.
Flames shot into the night sky.
Everyone stepped backward.
Adrian watched the place where he had lived for years disappear beneath fire.
His father's study.
The hidden rooms.
The photographs.
The secrets.
All burning.
Daniel stood beside him.
“It’s over.”
Adrian shook his head.
“No.”
“What?”
“The evidence.”
Daniel looked at the fire.
“Most of it is gone.”
Adrian opened the metal box.
“Not all.”
Inside was a small device.
A light blinked.
Green.
Daniel stared.
“What is that?”
“A transmitter.”
Adrian's eyes narrowed.
“Someone copied the files.”
A phone began ringing.
Elena answered.
A man's voice came through.
“Hello, Adrian.”
Adrian immediately recognized it.
The voice from the old recordings.
“Jonathan?”
Silence.
Then:
“You finally learned my name.”
Adrian looked toward the burning mansion.
“Where are you?”
“Somewhere your father can't reach.”
“Why did you save Lily?”
“Because she is my sister.”
Adrian's expression changed.
“And Mara?”
“Our sister.”
“And Ellie?”
Jonathan paused.
“She's the reason I stayed alive.”
The Truth About Ellie
Adrian looked at Ellie.
“What do you mean?”
Jonathan's voice softened.
“Your father believes Ellie is the final witness.”
“He's wrong?”
“Yes.”
“Then what is she?”
Another pause.
“The person who can destroy everything.”
Adrian's eyes narrowed.
“How?”
“Because she was never part of the program.”
Daniel froze.
“What?”
Jonathan continued.
“Ellie was born outside it.”
Adrian looked at Hannah.
Hannah was crying.
Jonathan said:
“She was the child they couldn't control.”
“Why?”
“Because her identity was never altered.”
“And the trust?”
“Her mother inherited the original records.”
Adrian stared at Hannah.
She looked terrified.
“You knew?”
Hannah shook her head.
“I didn't.”
Jonathan continued.
“Your husband knew.”
Adrian's heart stopped.
“David?”
“Yes.”
Hannah covered her mouth.
“My husband?”
“He died because he found the files.”
The truth struck them all at once.
David's death had not been an accident.
He had been silenced.
Because he had discovered the program.
And Ellie had inherited his evidence without knowing it.
The Last Message
Jonathan sent one final file.
Adrian opened it.
A recording appeared.
David Carter.
Alive in the video.
He looked directly into the camera.
“Hannah, if you're seeing this, I'm probably dead.”
Hannah collapsed into tears.
David continued.
“Ellie must never know until she's old enough.”
He held up a folder.
“The Moretti family is hiding something beneath the old mansion.”
Adrian stared.
“I discovered that seven children were used as financial witnesses.”
David continued.
“Your daughter wasn't supposed to be one of them.”
A pause.
“She became involved because of me.”
Adrian's eyes filled with tears.
David looked frightened.
“If anything happens to me, protect Ellie.”
The recording ended.
Hannah whispered:
“He knew.”
Adrian looked at her.
“He died protecting her.”
Hannah nodded.
Dawn
By sunrise, the mansion was nothing but smoke.
Police surrounded the property.
Firefighters searched the ruins.
Evelyn was missing.
Adrian's father was missing.
Vincent surrendered.
Daniel gave investigators the ledger.
Elena gave them the recordings.
Mara gave them the names she remembered.
Lily gave them the final photograph.
And Ellie—
Ellie gave them Rosie.
Inside the stuffed rabbit was the original memory card.
The one everyone had been searching for.
The one that contained the entire operation.
Every name.
Every payment.
Every recording.
Every order.
The evidence had survived.
The mansion had burned.
But the truth had not.
Adrian knelt beside Ellie.
“You saved us again.”
Ellie smiled.
“I didn't.”
She pointed toward Lily.
“Lily told me where Rosie was.”
Lily smiled.
Adrian looked at his daughters.
For the first time in three years, he wasn't looking at ghosts.
He was looking at his family.
But then a police officer approached.
“Mr. Moretti?”
Adrian stood.
“What?”
“We found something in the ruins.”
“What?”
The officer handed him a burned envelope.
Inside was a single photograph.
Adrian stared.
It showed his father.
Evelyn.
Jonathan.
And a fourth person.
A woman.
Adrian recognized her immediately.
His mother.
On the back was a handwritten sentence:
THE FIRE WAS ONLY THE BEGINNING.
Adrian looked toward the horizon.
Daniel stood beside him.
“What now?”
Adrian folded the photograph.
“Now we find them.”
Behind him, Lily held Ellie's hand.
Mara stood beside them.
Elena wrapped an arm around Hannah.
The mansion was gone.
The empire was cracking.
The secrets were finally coming into the light.
But somewhere beyond the smoke, Adrian's father was still alive.
And he was no longer hiding.
He was running.
Because for the first time in his life, the man who had controlled everyone else was afraid.
Afraid of three little girls who had survived him.
Afraid of a family he thought he had destroyed.
And most of all—
May you like
afraid of the truth.
The hunt had finally begun.
