Chapter 12 — The Girl Who Looked Like Lily

Chapter 12 — The Girl Who Looked Like Lily
The scream came from upstairs.
Adrian moved before anyone else could react.
“Lily!”
He raced out of the hidden chamber.
Daniel followed.
Elena grabbed Ellie and stayed close behind them.
The hallway was dark.
Emergency lights flickered against the walls.
“Lily!” Adrian shouted.
No answer.
Then—
a soft sound.
Footsteps.
Coming from Lily's old bedroom.
Adrian stopped outside the door.
His hand tightened around the weapon at his side.
He pushed the door open.
The room was empty.
The window was locked.
The curtains were still.
But on the bed sat a little girl.
Adrian froze.
For one impossible second, he thought he was looking at Lily.
Same dark curls.
Same gray-blue eyes.
Same small face.
Same pink ribbon in her hair.
The girl looked up.
“Daddy?”
Adrian couldn't breathe.
Behind him, Elena whispered:
“No…”
Daniel stopped beside him.
His face went completely white.
The girl smiled.
And Adrian realized something terrifying.
She looked exactly like Lily.
But she wasn't Lily.
The Other Girl
Adrian stepped into the room.
“Who are you?”
The girl didn't answer.
She stared at him.
Then she looked toward Elena.
“Mommy?”
Elena covered her mouth.
Her knees nearly buckled.
“No.”
The girl smiled.
“You came back.”
Elena stared at her.
“I've never seen you before.”
The child frowned.
“Yes, you have.”
“When?”
The girl pointed toward a photograph on the dresser.
It showed Lily at four years old.
Beside her stood Elena.
And behind them—
another little girl.
Adrian picked up the photograph.
His hands began to shake.
“That can't be.”
Daniel stepped closer.
“Turn it over.”
Adrian did.
On the back was a date.
And a name.
MARA.
Beneath it:
Subject 5.
The Children
Daniel's face changed.
“Mara.”
Adrian looked at him.
“You know her?”
“I've heard the name.”
“Where?”
“In the records.”
“What records?”
Daniel hesitated.
“The children.”
Adrian stared.
“The seven children.”
Daniel nodded.
“Mara was one of them.”
Adrian looked at the little girl.
“How old are you?”
“Seven.”
“When were you born?”
She gave a date.
Adrian's expression changed.
It matched the date in the photograph.
“But Lily was four.”
Mara nodded.
“We were together.”
“Where?”
“The house.”
“What house?”
“The one with no windows.”
The Secret Program
Elena entered the room.
“Mara, who brought you here?”
The girl pointed toward the hallway.
“The nice man.”
“Who?”
“Mr. Vincent.”
Adrian closed his eyes.
Of course.
Vincent.
Always Vincent.
Always one step ahead.
“Where is he now?”
Mara shrugged.
“He said I had to wait.”
“For what?”
“For Daddy.”
Adrian crouched in front of her.
“I am not your daddy.”
Mara looked confused.
“You look like him.”
“Who?”
“Lily's daddy.”
Adrian's heart stopped.
“Who told you that?”
“Lily.”
The room went silent.
“Lily told you about me?”
“Yes.”
“When?”
“Before she left.”
Adrian stared at her.
“Where did Lily go?”
Mara pointed toward the wall.
“She went to find Ellie.”
The Missing Night
Ellie entered the room.
Mara looked at her.
The two girls stared at each other.
Neither moved.
Then Ellie slowly stepped forward.
“You know me.”
Mara nodded.
“You have Rosie.”
Ellie hugged the rabbit.
“Lily gave her to me.”
“No.”
Mara shook her head.
“Rosie belonged to Lily.”
Ellie looked down.
“What?”
“Lily gave Rosie to you because she knew she might not come back.”
Adrian's chest tightened.
Mara continued.
“She told me to protect you.”
Ellie whispered:
“Why?”
“Because you're the last one.”
Daniel stepped forward.
“The last what?”
Mara looked at him.
“The last child.”
The Seventh Child
Daniel went pale.
Mara explained what she remembered.
Seven children had been placed into the program.
Each came from a family with access to money, influence, or hidden information.
The children were given new identities.
Their records were altered.
Their inheritances redirected.
Their parents manipulated.
The adults believed the children were assets.
But Elena had discovered the truth.
She began rescuing them.
One by one.
Mara was number five.
Lily was number six.
Ellie was number seven.
The first four had disappeared.
Mara didn't know where they were.
Adrian looked at Daniel.
“How many survived?”
“Three.”
“Mara.”
“Lily.”
“And Ellie.”
Adrian looked at the three girls' photographs.
Then he noticed something.
All three had the same symbol on their wrists.
A tiny scar.
A circle crossed by a line.
He remembered seeing it on Lily.
“What does this mean?”
Mara answered.
“It means we're witnesses.”
The Memory Card
Adrian remembered the black box.
He retrieved it from the hidden chamber.
The memory card was still inside.
Elena stopped him.
“Don't.”
“Why?”
“Because once you watch it, you can't pretend anymore.”
Adrian inserted the card.
A video appeared.
Lily sat in a chair.
She looked older.
Maybe six.
Her hair was longer.
Her face was thinner.
But her eyes were bright.
“Daddy.”
Adrian stopped breathing.
“I know you think I'm dead.”
He looked at Elena.
She began crying.
Lily continued.
“I'm not.”
Adrian covered his mouth.
“But I need you to understand why I stayed away.”
Lily looked toward someone beside the camera.
Then she whispered:
“Mommy told me that if I came home, they would use me to find Ellie.”
Adrian's eyes filled with tears.
“I don't want them to find her.”
A pause.
“So I'm staying hidden.”
The video ended.
The Girl's Drawing
Mara walked toward Adrian.
She held a folded piece of paper.
“Lily gave me this.”
Adrian opened it.
It was a drawing.
Three girls stood together.
Lily.
Mara.
Ellie.
Above them was a large red circle.
Inside the circle was a face.
Adrian recognized it.
His mother.
But beneath her face was another.
A man.
Adrian stared.
“Who is this?”
Mara shook her head.
“I don't know.”
Daniel looked closer.
Then stepped backward.
“I do.”
Adrian turned.
“Who?”
Daniel's face had lost all color.
“That is Marcus Vale.”
Adrian frowned.
“Who?”
“The man who financed our father's organization.”
Adrian stared at the drawing.
“Where is he?”
Daniel swallowed.
“He's dead.”
Elena shook her head.
“No.”
Everyone looked at her.
“He isn't.”
The Betrayal
Elena walked toward the window.
“I met Marcus once.”
“When?”
“Before the bombing.”
“What did he want?”
“Lily.”
Adrian's fists tightened.
“Why?”
“He believed Lily knew where the evidence was.”
“What evidence?”
“The original ledger.”
Daniel looked shocked.
“The ledger was destroyed.”
Elena shook her head.
“No.”
She pointed toward the floor.
“It was hidden.”
“Where?”
“Inside Lily's room.”
Adrian looked around.
The room had been untouched for years.
He began searching.
Behind the bookshelf.
Under the bed.
Inside the closet.
Nothing.
Mara suddenly spoke.
“Not there.”
Adrian turned.
“Where?”
She pointed toward the ceiling.
“Lily said Daddy never looks up.”
Adrian looked upward.
A small wooden panel was hidden above the chandelier.
He pulled a chair beneath it.
Then reached inside.
His fingers touched metal.
He pulled out a black ledger.
Daniel stared.
“The original.”
The Name
Adrian opened it.
Pages of transactions.
Dates.
Names.
Payments.
Everything.
Then he reached the final page.
There was one handwritten sentence.
The children were never the objective.
Adrian frowned.
Below it was another line.
They were the insurance.
And beneath that—
The real target was Adrian Moretti.
Adrian stared.
The entire operation had been designed around him.
Not Daniel.
Not Lily.
Not Ellie.
Him.
His father had spent decades manipulating Adrian's life.
Creating enemies.
Creating debts.
Creating fear.
Turning his son into the perfect successor.
Then the children were used to control him.
Elena whispered:
“They wanted you to become your father.”
Adrian closed the ledger.
“And if I refused?”
Mara answered:
“They would kill everyone you loved.”
The Woman Who Knew
A slow clap came from the doorway.
Everyone turned.
Evelyn stood there.
The red scarf around her neck.
A pistol in her hand.
“You finally found it.”
Adrian stepped in front of the girls.
“Evelyn.”
She smiled.
“You've always been clever.”
“Where is Vincent?”
“Gone.”
“Where is my father?”
“Also gone.”
Adrian's eyes narrowed.
“And Marcus Vale?”
Evelyn's smile disappeared.
“You're asking too many questions.”
“Because I'm finally asking the right ones.”
Evelyn raised the weapon.
Daniel moved beside Adrian.
Evelyn laughed.
“Two brothers.”
She shook her head.
“You never learned.”
“What?”
“Family isn't about love.”
Her eyes moved toward the girls.
“It's about leverage.”
The Final Betrayal
Before Evelyn could fire, another voice spoke.
“Put the gun down.”
Everyone turned.
Vincent stood behind her.
Blood covered his shirt.
Evelyn's eyes widened.
“You.”
Vincent raised his weapon.
“You've lost.”
She laughed.
“You think killing me will save them?”
“No.”
Vincent looked toward Adrian.
“I think telling him the truth will.”
Adrian stared.
“What truth?”
Vincent's eyes filled with tears.
“I was the one who took Lily.”
“I know.”
“No.”
Vincent shook his head.
“You don't know why.”
He looked at Mara.
“Or why she looks like Lily.”
Adrian's heart sank.
Vincent whispered:
“Because Lily had a twin.”
Silence.
Elena staggered backward.
“That's impossible.”
Vincent shook his head.
“Lily wasn't one child.”
He looked at Mara.
“She was two.”
Adrian stared at the girl.
Mara lowered her eyes.
Vincent continued.
“Your mother separated them at birth.”
Adrian's world tilted.
“Why?”
“To hide one of them.”
“From whom?”
Vincent looked toward Evelyn.
Then toward the hidden study.
Finally, he whispered:
“From the man who has been controlling all of us.”
Adrian tightened his grip on the ledger.
“Who?”
Vincent's face went pale.
“Your father.”
Adrian shook his head.
“He's already gone.”
Vincent whispered:
“No.”
“He's in this house.”
A floorboard creaked upstairs.
Everyone looked toward the ceiling.
Then came a man's voice.
Calm.
Familiar.
Terrifying.
“Adrian.”
Adrian froze.
His father's voice.
“You've finally found the children.”
The lights went out.
And in the darkness, Mara grabbed Ellie's hand.
“Don't be afraid.”
Ellie whispered:
“Why?”
Mara looked toward the ceiling.
May you like
“Because Lily told me Daddy would come.”
Then a gunshot echoed through the mansion.
