Chapter 8 — The Night Lily Was Taken

Chapter 8 — The Night Lily Was Taken

The rain began at 11:17 p.m.

By midnight, the Moretti estate was surrounded by darkness.

Adrian stood in the center of the empty foyer, staring at Vincent's abandoned phone.

The man he had trusted for twenty-two years had disappeared.

The key was gone.

And Ellie was missing.

Daniel stood near the window.

“We're running out of time.”

Adrian looked at him.

“You said Vincent wasn't the man behind this.”

“I was wrong.”

“No.”

Daniel shook his head.

“Not completely.”

Adrian's eyes narrowed.

“What does that mean?”

“It means Vincent is working for someone.”

“Who?”

Daniel looked toward the locked gates.

“The man who took Lily.”

Adrian froze.

“You mean the bombing?”

Daniel nodded.

“The night Lily died wasn't the beginning.”

“It was the night everything became irreversible.”

Adrian's jaw tightened.

“Then tell me what happened.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

“It started eleven minutes before the explosion.”

The Night Before

Three years earlier, Lily had been four.

She had spent the evening drawing pictures in the living room.

Elena sat beside her.

Lily was drawing a house.

Three people stood outside.

Daddy.

Mommy.

Lily.

Then she added a fourth person.

A little girl.

Elena stared at the drawing.

“Who's that?”

Lily smiled.

“Ellie.”

Elena's face changed.

“Where did you hear that name?”

“She told me.”

Elena froze.

“Who?”

“The lady.”

“What lady?”

Lily pointed toward the hallway.

“She comes when Daddy isn't home.”

Elena stood immediately.

“Lily, stay here.”

She walked into the hallway.

Nothing.

The house was empty.

But on the floor was a small pink ribbon.

Elena picked it up.

She knew it.

It belonged to Ellie.

The Phone Call

Elena called Daniel.

“She's here.”

Daniel's voice came through the phone.

“Who?”

“Ellie.”

Silence.

Then:

“Where?”

“In the house.”

Daniel swore under his breath.

“Get Lily out.”

“I can't.”

“Why?”

“The guards won't let me leave.”

“Then use the service entrance.”

“I tried.”

“What's stopping you?”

Elena looked toward the security monitor.

A familiar face appeared.

Vincent.

Standing outside the service entrance.

Elena's stomach tightened.

“Vincent.”

Daniel became silent.

“Don't trust him.”

“I know.”

“No. You don't.”

Elena whispered:

“Daniel, I'm scared.”

“You need to listen to me.”

“What?”

“Take Lily to the restaurant.”

“Why?”

“Because your husband is coming.”

Elena frowned.

“Adrian?”

“Yes.”

“He'll be there in twenty minutes.”

Daniel's voice dropped.

“Make sure Lily is not with you when he arrives.”

Elena stared at the phone.

“Why?”

“Because they're watching him.”

The Missing Child

At 11:23 p.m., Elena entered Lily's bedroom.

The bed was empty.

She stopped breathing.

“Lily?”

Nothing.

She searched the bathroom.

Closet.

Hallway.

Kitchen.

Nothing.

Then she found the back door open.

Rain blew across the floor.

Elena screamed.

“Lily!”

She ran outside.

A black vehicle was disappearing through the gates.

Elena recognized it.

Vincent's car.

She called Daniel.

“They took her.”

Daniel's voice went cold.

“Who?”

“Vincent.”

“No.”

“I saw his car.”

“Elena, listen to me.”

“I know what I saw!”

“Then don't follow him.”

“That's my daughter!”

“If you follow him, they'll take you too.”

Elena stopped.

“What do you mean?”

Daniel hesitated.

“They're not trying to kill Lily.”

“Then what do they want?”

“They want what she knows.”

Lily's Secret

Lily had discovered the trust.

She had found documents hidden inside her father's library.

She didn't understand the legal language.

But she recognized one thing.

A photograph.

A baby.

Ellie.

And beneath it was a name.

Daniel Moretti.

Lily had asked Elena:

“Who's that?”

Elena had tried to protect her.

But Lily had already understood that adults were hiding something.

She had followed Vincent.

She had seen him meeting strangers.

She had heard conversations she wasn't supposed to hear.

And she had drawn everything.

Those drawings became evidence.

The reason Vincent needed her alive.

The Restaurant

At 11:41 p.m., Adrian arrived at the restaurant.

He didn't know Elena was there.

He didn't know Lily had been taken.

He only knew he had received an anonymous warning.

Don't let your daughter leave the building.

He walked inside.

The explosion happened seven minutes later.

The blast destroyed the entrance.

Glass flew across the room.

People screamed.

Adrian was thrown against a wall.

Then everything went black.

Forty-Three Minutes

When Adrian woke, fire surrounded him.

“Lily!”

He crawled through smoke.

He found Elena first.

She was unconscious.

Then he saw Lily.

She was trapped beneath a fallen beam.

“Lily!”

Her eyes opened.

“Daddy?”

Adrian broke down.

“I'm here.”

“Where's Mommy?”

“She'll be okay.”

Lily smiled weakly.

“I knew you'd come.”

Adrian tried to move the beam.

He couldn't.

“Hold on, baby.”

Lily reached for his hand.

“Daddy?”

“Yes?”

“Find Ellie.”

Adrian froze.

“Who?”

“The little girl.”

“What little girl?”

Lily looked frightened.

“The one Mommy saved.”

A second explosion shook the building.

Lily screamed.

Then her eyes closed.

Adrian shouted for help.

He never forgot the next forty-three minutes.

The Woman in the Ambulance

At the hospital, Adrian was told Elena was dead.

He never saw her body.

He never questioned the paperwork.

He was too broken.

But Elena had survived.

A paramedic named Rebecca Shaw had pulled her from the wreckage.

Rebecca recognized Elena.

She had known her through Daniel.

She moved Elena to another ambulance.

Then she disappeared.

That was the moment Elena Moretti died officially.

But the woman herself survived.

The Missing Evidence

Lily's drawings were collected by Vincent.

He told Adrian they had been destroyed.

They weren't.

He kept them.

For years.

Because they contained something he needed.

One drawing showed a basement.

Another showed a locked door.

The final drawing showed a grave.

And beneath it was written:

Daddy's secret.

Vincent knew exactly what it meant.

He knew Lily had discovered the hidden trust.

And he knew the trust could destroy everything.

Ellie

In the present, Adrian stood outside Lily's bedroom.

Hannah was crying.

“Where is my daughter?”

Adrian looked at her.

“We'll find her.”

Daniel entered.

“I found something.”

He held up a photograph.

It showed Vincent entering an old underground facility.

Adrian stared.

“Where is that?”

“Beneath the original Moretti estate.”

Adrian's eyes narrowed.

“The house my father left me?”

“Yes.”

“And Ellie?”

Daniel pointed to the photograph.

“She was taken there.”

Adrian grabbed his coat.

“Then we're going.”

The Original Estate

The old estate stood outside the city.

Abandoned.

Windows broken.

Iron gates rusted.

Adrian had not visited since his father's funeral.

He entered through the front door.

Daniel followed.

“Stay close.”

They descended into the basement.

At the end of a corridor was a steel door.

Adrian tried it.

Locked.

Daniel pulled out a tool.

“No.”

Adrian stopped him.

He remembered.

The key.

The key Vincent had stolen.

He looked at the lock.

There was a small heart-shaped indentation.

Adrian understood.

The key had been designed for Lily.

Not the estate.

Not the trust.

Lily.

Daniel stared.

“Your father made her the guardian.”

Adrian's voice cracked.

“She was four.”

“She was his granddaughter.”

The door suddenly unlocked from the other side.

They froze.

Then a voice came through.

“Adrian.”

His father's voice.

“Come inside.”

Adrian's face went white.

Daniel whispered:

“Don't.”

But Adrian opened the door.

The Room

Inside was a surveillance room.

Monitors covered the walls.

One showed the mansion.

Another showed the cemetery.

Another showed the hospital.

Then Adrian saw Ellie.

She was sitting in a chair.

Alive.

Rosie was in her lap.

Adrian stepped forward.

“Ellie!”

The little girl looked at the camera.

“Mr. Moretti?”

Adrian almost collapsed with relief.

Then another figure stepped into the camera frame.

Vincent.

He placed a hand on Ellie's shoulder.

Adrian's blood turned cold.

Vincent smiled.

“You finally came.”

Adrian stared at the screen.

“Let her go.”

Vincent shook his head.

“I can't.”

“Why?”

“Because she isn't the one I need.”

Adrian's heart stopped.

“Then who?”

Vincent looked directly into the camera.

“You.”

A door opened behind Adrian.

Someone entered the room.

Adrian turned.

His father stood there.

Older.

Alive.

Holding a gun.

Daniel whispered:

“Father.”

The old man smiled.

“My sons.”

Adrian stared at him.

“You killed Lily.”

His father shook his head.

“No.”

“Then who did?”

The old man looked toward the monitor.

Vincent appeared beside Ellie.

And then the truth came.

“Vincent did.”

Adrian's heart stopped.

Vincent's voice came through the speaker.

“I didn't want to.”

His father smiled.

“But you did.”

Adrian looked at Ellie.

The little girl was crying now.

Vincent leaned toward her.

“Tell them what you remember.”

Ellie wiped her eyes.

Then she looked directly into the camera.

“I remember Lily.”

Adrian's heart broke.

“What happened?”

Ellie whispered:

“Lily wasn't killed in the explosion.”

Silence.

“She was taken first.”

Adrian froze.

His father lowered the gun.

Daniel stared at the screen.

“What?”

Ellie continued.

“Vincent took her.”

Adrian felt the room spin.

“And then?”

Ellie hugged Rosie tightly.

“He brought her to the secret room.”

Vincent's face disappeared from the monitor.

Then another voice came through.

A child's voice.

Recorded.

Lily.

“Daddy…”

Adrian stopped breathing.

The recording continued.

“If you hear this, I'm sorry.”

Adrian's eyes filled with tears.

“I found the secret.”

A pause.

“And the person who took me isn't the person you think.”

The recording ended.

The screen went black.

Adrian stared.

His father lowered the gun.

Daniel whispered:

“Someone else was there that night.”

Adrian looked at him.

“Who?”

Daniel's face went pale.

“The person Lily was afraid of.”

Then the lights went out.

A single door slammed shut.

May you like

And somewhere in the darkness, Ellie screamed:

“Mommy!”
