Chapter 9 — Ellie’s Second Miracle

Chapter 9 — Ellie’s Second Miracle
The darkness lasted three seconds.
But to Adrian, it felt like an eternity.
“Ellie!”
Her scream came from behind the steel door.
Then silence.
Adrian lunged toward the sound.
A gunshot cracked through the room.
Daniel grabbed him and pulled him down.
“Get back!”
Another shot struck the wall.
The emergency lights flickered on.
Red light washed across the underground chamber.
Adrian looked toward the monitors.
Ellie was gone.
So was Vincent.
Only his father remained.
The old man stood calmly in the center of the room.
Adrian raised his weapon.
“Where is she?”
His father smiled.
“You still think this is about the girl.”
Adrian's voice shook with rage.
“Where is Ellie?”
“She is the key.”
“To what?”
“The end of everything.”
The Locked Door
Daniel rushed toward the control panel.
“Adrian!”
“What?”
“There's another exit.”
He pointed toward a narrow passage behind the monitors.
“They moved her.”
Adrian ran.
They entered a tunnel.
Footsteps echoed ahead.
Vincent was carrying Ellie.
She wasn't screaming anymore.
She was strangely quiet.
Adrian shouted:
“Vincent!”
Vincent turned.
For a moment, Adrian saw fear in his eyes.
Then Vincent disappeared around the corner.
Daniel followed.
Adrian ran harder.
The tunnel ended at an old service elevator.
The doors were closing.
Adrian reached them just in time.
He forced his arm between them.
The elevator stopped.
Vincent stared at him.
Ellie was pressed against his chest.
“Put her down.”
Vincent shook his head.
“You don't understand.”
“You've said that enough.”
“I am trying to keep her alive.”
Adrian looked at Ellie.
“Then let her go.”
Vincent hesitated.
That hesitation saved them.
Daniel struck the emergency release.
The elevator doors opened.
Ellie slipped from Vincent's arms.
Adrian caught her.
She immediately wrapped both arms around his neck.
“Mr. Moretti!”
“I've got you.”
She was trembling.
“Don't let him take me.”
“I won't.”
Vincent backed away.
“You have no idea what you've just done.”
Adrian held Ellie tighter.
“Try me.”
The Allergy Attack
Ellie suddenly gasped.
Adrian felt her body stiffen.
“Ellie?”
She couldn't answer.
Her hand went to her throat.
Hannah's warning flashed through Adrian's mind.
Her allergy.
Her EpiPen.
He searched the pink backpack.
Empty.
Adrian's face changed.
“Where's her medicine?”
Daniel checked the bag.
“Nothing.”
Ellie began wheezing.
Adrian shouted:
“Medical kit!”
Vincent looked at the child.
His expression changed.
“She's reacting.”
Adrian stared at him.
“You know what to do?”
“Yes.”
Vincent reached into his pocket.
He pulled out an EpiPen.
Adrian froze.
“You carry one?”
Vincent nodded.
“For Lily.”
The words broke something inside Adrian.
Vincent knelt.
“Let me help her.”
Adrian hesitated.
Then handed him the pen.
Vincent administered it.
They waited.
One second.
Two.
Three.
Ellie's breathing remained shallow.
“Come on,” Vincent whispered.
Her eyes fluttered.
Then she inhaled.
A deep breath.
Another.
She began crying.
Adrian held her.
Vincent sat on the floor.
For the first time, the old butler looked broken.
The Second Miracle
Ellie looked at Vincent.
“You saved me.”
Vincent lowered his head.
“I owed you.”
“Why?”
“Because I couldn't save Lily.”
Adrian stared at him.
“What happened to Lily?”
Vincent closed his eyes.
“I didn't kill her.”
“You took her.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“To hide her.”
Adrian's anger returned.
“You kept her from me.”
“Because your father was watching you.”
“My father?”
“Yes.”
Vincent swallowed.
“He ordered me to take Lily.”
“Why?”
“Because she had found the ledger.”
Adrian stared.
“But you said you were protecting her.”
“I was.”
“What happened?”
Vincent looked at Ellie.
“Lily escaped.”
Adrian froze.
“What?”
“She escaped the secret room.”
“Where did she go?”
Vincent whispered:
“To Elena.”
The Missing Forty Minutes
Daniel stepped forward.
“That changes everything.”
Vincent nodded.
“Lily wasn't inside the restaurant when the bomb exploded.”
Adrian stared.
“Then who was?”
“An empty car.”
Adrian's face went white.
“What?”
Vincent explained.
“Lily had already been moved.”
The bombing had been staged.
The body recovered from the wreckage wasn't Lily.
It belonged to someone else.
Adrian struggled to breathe.
“Then why did Rebecca say Lily died?”
“Because she was shown the wrong body.”
Adrian remembered the hospital.
The smoke.
The chaos.
The paperwork.
He had never seen Lily.
Never touched her body.
Never seen her face after the explosion.
He had simply believed.
Vincent continued.
“I took Lily because your father wanted her hidden.”
“Where?”
“An old safe house.”
“Is she alive?”
Vincent looked at him.
“I don't know.”
Adrian's heart stopped.
“But she escaped.”
“Yes.”
“When?”
“Three years ago.”
Adrian staggered backward.
Lily had survived.
At least for some time.
Elena's Secret
Daniel suddenly understood.
“Elena knew.”
Vincent nodded.
“She found Lily.”
“Then why didn't she come back?”
“Because they were being hunted.”
“By whom?”
Vincent looked at Adrian.
“Your father wasn't working alone.”
Adrian's eyes narrowed.
“Who?”
Vincent didn't answer.
Instead, he pointed toward Ellie.
“She knows.”
Adrian looked down.
Ellie was holding Rosie.
“What does she know?”
Vincent's voice softened.
“Ask her about the woman with the red scarf.”
Ellie looked up.
Her face went pale.
Adrian knelt.
“Ellie?”
She nodded slowly.
“Do you remember her?”
“Yes.”
“Who was she?”
Ellie whispered:
“She took Lily.”
Adrian froze.
“Where?”
Ellie pointed toward the darkness.
“The house with no windows.”
Daniel looked at Vincent.
“What house?”
Vincent's expression changed.
“I thought that place was destroyed.”
The House With No Windows
The address was hidden inside the ledger.
A remote property outside Connecticut.
No windows.
No public records.
No electricity.
A place built beneath the ground.
Adrian looked at Daniel.
“We're going.”
Daniel nodded.
Vincent stood.
“I know the way.”
Adrian aimed his weapon.
“You're not coming.”
Vincent looked at him.
“If you want Lily alive, I have to.”
Adrian hesitated.
Then lowered the weapon.
“Then you better pray you're telling the truth.”
The Underground House
They arrived before dawn.
The building looked abandoned.
Concrete walls.
No windows.
One steel door.
Vincent entered a code.
The door opened.
Inside were photographs.
Hundreds.
Adrian walked past them.
Lily.
Elena.
Daniel.
Ellie.
And Adrian.
Every stage of their lives had been recorded.
Someone had been watching them for years.
Daniel found a monitor.
“It still has power.”
Adrian pressed the switch.
A video appeared.
Lily.
Older.
Maybe five.
She looked directly into the camera.
“Daddy?”
Adrian stopped.
The little girl smiled.
“I don't know if you'll ever see this.”
Adrian's eyes filled with tears.
“But Mommy says you're looking for me.”
The video continued.
“She says you shouldn't trust Grandpa.”
Adrian froze.
“Grandpa?”
Lily nodded.
“He's not really my grandpa.”
The video ended.
Adrian turned to Daniel.
“What does that mean?”
Daniel looked horrified.
“Our father isn't Lily's grandfather.”
“What?”
Daniel pointed toward the screen.
“Because Lily wasn't Elena's biological daughter.”
Adrian stared.
The truth became more complicated.
And more dangerous.
The Second Video
A second file opened automatically.
Elena appeared.
She was holding Lily's hand.
“If Adrian ever finds this, tell him everything.”
She looked at the camera.
“Lily was adopted.”
Adrian's mouth went dry.
“She was born from the same program that created the trust.”
Daniel whispered:
“No.”
Elena continued.
“Lily and Ellie were connected from birth.”
Adrian stared.
“What program?”
Elena's face filled the screen.
“A program designed to hide children belonging to powerful men.”
She took a breath.
“Daniel's daughter was never supposed to survive.”
Then the screen went black.
The Real Target
Vincent suddenly spoke.
“Now you understand why they want Ellie.”
Adrian turned.
“They don't want the money.”
“No.”
“They want her identity.”
“Yes.”
Daniel looked at Ellie.
“She is living proof.”
“Proof of what?”
Vincent answered:
“That your father built an empire using stolen identities.”
Adrian stared.
“And Lily?”
“Lily was the first child who discovered it.”
Adrian's fists tightened.
“Where is she now?”
Vincent looked toward a second corridor.
“We don't know.”
Then a small voice came from behind them.
“I do.”
Everyone turned.
Ellie stood beside a wall.
She pointed toward a hidden door.
“Lily told me.”
Adrian rushed to her.
“When?”
“Before.”
“Before what?”
“Before she went away.”
Adrian knelt.
“What did she tell you?”
Ellie hugged Rosie.
“She said if Daddy ever came…”
Adrian's voice trembled.
“What?”
“She said to give him this.”
Ellie opened Rosie's stomach seam.
Inside was a small photograph.
Adrian pulled it out.
It showed Lily standing beside a woman.
The woman wore a red scarf.
Behind them stood Elena.
Alive.
And beside Elena—
a man.
Adrian stared at the man's face.
His heart stopped.
He knew him.
Everyone did.
Because the man standing beside Elena wasn't a stranger.
It was Vincent.
But beneath the photograph was a date.
Taken three weeks after the bombing.
Adrian slowly looked at the butler.
Vincent's face collapsed.
“You lied to me.”
Vincent whispered:
“Yes.”
“Where was this?”
He pointed to the photograph.
Vincent couldn't answer.
Adrian raised his weapon.
“Where?”
Vincent finally whispered:
“Lily was alive.”
Adrian's voice broke.
“For how long?”
Vincent looked at him.
“Until the night she disappeared.”
“When?”
“Last month.”
Adrian froze.
Last month.
Not three years ago.
Not dead.
Not a memory.
Lily had been alive until recently.
And someone had taken her again.
Ellie suddenly grabbed Adrian's hand.
“Daddy?”
Adrian looked down.
She pointed toward the hidden door.
“She's behind there.”
Adrian turned.
The door slowly opened.
From the darkness came a child's voice.
“Daddy?”
Adrian stopped breathing.
It was Lily.
May you like
Alive.
Calling for him.
