Chapter 1 – The Housekeeper in Room 1708

Chapter 1 – The Housekeeper in Room 1708
The Grand Alcazar Hotel had been built on one simple promise:
Nothing ugly was ever allowed to exist inside its walls.
Every crystal chandelier sparkled without a single fingerprint.
Every marble floor reflected perfection.
Every employee smiled, bowed, and disappeared before guests ever noticed they were there.
It was a palace where billionaires came to forget the world outside.
Yet in one heartbeat, Julian Rossi realized the greatest lie in the building wasn't hidden behind the gold leaf or imported marble.
It was standing in front of him.
Pushing a housekeeping cart.
Pregnant.
Pretending she had never loved him.
Julian couldn't breathe.
The lobby faded into silence.
The sound of the grand piano.
The clinking champagne glasses.
The polite laughter drifting from the lounge.
Everything disappeared beneath one impossible truth.
"Elena..."
She didn't answer.
Instead, she straightened a stack of fresh towels with hands that trembled almost imperceptibly.
Her employee badge caught the light.
ELENA MORETTI
Housekeeping Department.
Employee #4718.
As though she had never been Elena Rossi.
As though she had never spent seven years sharing his home.
As though she had never whispered that she wanted nothing more than to grow old beside him.
Camila tightened her grip around Julian's arm.
"Julian?"
He didn't hear her.
He couldn't stop staring.
Elena's face looked thinner than he remembered.
The warmth that once softened her dark eyes had vanished.
Her lips had lost their color.
Her once elegant posture was bent beneath exhaustion.
Then his eyes drifted downward.
To her stomach.
His chest tightened painfully.
She was at least seven months pregnant.
The math struck him like a freight train.
Eight months.
She had disappeared eight months ago.
Which meant—
The baby...
His heart pounded violently.
No.
Surely she would have told him.
Wouldn't she?
"What happened to you?"
His voice was barely more than a whisper.
Elena finally looked at him.
Not with anger.
Not with sadness.
With perfect professionalism.
"I'm sorry, sir."
"If you require additional towels, housekeeping is available twenty-four hours a day."
Sir.
Again.
Every time she called him that, another piece of him broke.
The concierge hurried toward them.
"Mr. Rossi, your presidential suite is ready."
Julian didn't move.
He stepped closer to Elena.
"Look at me."
She didn't.
"Please."
For one brief second...
She raised her eyes.
There it was.
Pain.
So much pain that it nearly made him stagger.
Then it vanished.
Replaced once more by the emotionless expression of a hotel employee.
"I have other rooms to prepare."
She pushed the cleaning cart forward.
Julian instinctively reached for her wrist.
"Don't."
The word escaped her lips before she could stop it.
Not loud.
Not angry.
Afraid.
Deeply afraid.
Several guests turned to watch.
Camila crossed her arms.
"This is ridiculous."
She looked Elena up and down with open contempt.
"So this is the woman who abandoned you?"
Julian answered without taking his eyes off Elena.
"She never abandoned me."
Camila frowned.
"You told me she disappeared."
"I said she disappeared."
"I never said she left because she wanted to."
The words hit Elena harder than he realized.
For the first time...
Her carefully controlled expression cracked.
Only for an instant.
But Julian saw it.
The concierge stepped between them.
"Mr. Rossi, perhaps we should continue this conversation privately."
Julian finally turned.
"I want to know why my wife is cleaning hotel rooms."
The lobby fell silent again.
A businessman lowered his newspaper.
A woman paused halfway through sipping champagne.
Even the pianist stopped playing.
The concierge forced a nervous smile.
"I'm afraid I can't discuss employee matters."
"I'm not asking about an employee."
Julian's voice hardened.
"I'm asking about my wife."
Elena interrupted quietly.
"Please don't."
He turned back.
"What?"
"Don't do this."
"Do what?"
"Make my life harder."
The words barely escaped her lips.
Then she immediately regretted saying them.
Julian stared.
"What does that mean?"
She shook her head.
"Nothing."
"It didn't sound like nothing."
"It was."
"Elena—"
"I need to work."
Before he could stop her again, she pushed the heavy brass cart toward the elevators.
Julian followed.
Ignoring Camila.
Ignoring the concierge.
Ignoring every curious pair of eyes.
The service elevator doors opened.
Elena wheeled the cart inside.
Just before the doors closed...
Julian slipped through.
The elevator began rising.
Silence filled the tiny metal box.
Only the soft hum of machinery surrounded them.
Neither spoke.
Not until the elevator reached the twelfth floor.
Julian finally whispered,
"I looked everywhere."
She remained silent.
"I hired investigators."
Nothing.
"I searched hospitals."
No response.
"I thought you were dead."
Her breathing became uneven.
Still...
She refused to look at him.
"You left your wedding ring."
"I know."
"You left every photograph."
"I know."
"You left your passport."
"I know."
"So tell me."
His voice broke.
"Why?"
The elevator stopped.
The doors opened onto a quiet hallway.
Elena slowly pushed the cart out.
Without turning around, she answered.
"Because if I had stayed..."
"...you would have died."
She disappeared down the corridor.
Leaving Julian frozen inside the elevator.
The doors closed again.
Twenty minutes later...
Julian stood alone in the presidential suite overlooking the city skyline.
Camila poured herself a glass of champagne.
"I don't understand why you're obsessed."
He didn't answer.
She walked over.
"She left you."
"No."
"She clearly did."
"No."
"Then explain."
Julian stared through the window.
"She was terrified."
Camila rolled her eyes.
"Pregnancy hormones."
He turned sharply.
"Don't."
"What?"
"You don't know her."
Camila sighed dramatically.
"Fine."
"But she's clearly moved on."
Julian's jaw tightened.
"That's not what I saw."
That night...
Unable to sleep, Julian wandered the hotel corridors.
He wasn't searching for answers anymore.
He was searching for Elena.
At nearly midnight...
He found her.
Room 1708.
The door stood open.
She was alone.
On her knees.
Scrubbing a marble bathroom floor by hand.
The bucket beside her contained harsh industrial chemicals.
The smell of bleach filled the room.
She leaned forward to rinse the cloth—
Then suddenly stopped.
One hand flew to her stomach.
A sharp pain crossed her face.
She inhaled slowly.
Waiting for it to pass.
Only then did she continue working.
Julian watched unseen from the hallway.
His hands clenched into fists.
No pregnant woman should have been doing this.
Just then...
A man's voice echoed from farther down the corridor.
"Room 1708 isn't finished yet?"
A tall supervisor approached wearing a black management suit.
His name badge read:
Victor Salazar
Executive Housekeeping Manager.
Victor frowned at Elena.
"I gave you twenty rooms today."
"You've completed only sixteen."
"I'm trying."
"Trying doesn't meet hotel standards."
He tossed another master key card onto her cleaning cart.
"Add Room 1712."
Elena looked exhausted.
"My shift ended an hour ago."
Victor shrugged.
"Then work faster."
Julian stepped forward instinctively.
But before he could speak...
Elena gave the smallest shake of her head.
A silent plea.
Don't.
He stopped.
Victor walked away without ever noticing him.
After several moments, Elena slowly stood.
She picked up the bucket.
As she lifted it...
Her sleeve slid back.
Julian's heart stopped.
Dark purple bruises wrapped around her wrist.
Older bruises covered her forearm.
Some yellowing.
Some fresh.
One looked like fingerprints.
His blood ran cold.
These weren't injuries from cleaning.
Someone had been grabbing her.
Hard.
Very hard.
Elena quickly pulled her sleeve down.
Too late.
Julian had already seen everything.
For the second time that night, she looked directly into his eyes.
This time...
She didn't ask him to leave.
She only whispered four heartbreaking words.
"They're watching me."
Then the lights in Room 1708 suddenly went out.
The hallway fell into darkness.
And somewhere beyond the open doorway...
May you like
A security camera quietly rotated toward them.
