Chapter 7 – The Contract

Chapter 7 – The Contract
Julian replayed the surveillance video.
Once.
Twice.
Then a third time.
The image was grainy, captured by an exterior security camera near the hotel's private executive entrance, but there was no mistaking the woman stepping out of the black limousine.
Isabella Rossi.
His mother.
Elegant.
Calm.
Untouchable.
Victor Salazar greeted her with a respectful nod before accepting the sealed envelope.
Julian paused the footage at the exact moment the envelope opened.
Inside was a photograph.
Elena.
The timestamp on the screen read:
Eight Months Earlier.
Only three days before Elena vanished.
Julian's hands trembled.
Everything he had believed for eight months had been a lie.
Across the executive floor, Elena remained seated in Isabella's office.
Neither woman spoke.
The silence between them carried years of unspoken resentment.
Finally, Isabella slid another document across the desk.
"This is the original."
Elena stared at it.
The contract.
The one that had destroyed her marriage.
"I've never stopped wondering," Elena whispered, "how many lies were hidden in these pages."
"You read every word."
"I believed every word."
"Because you wanted to."
Elena slowly lifted her eyes.
"No."
"Because I trusted you."
Isabella folded her hands.
"You trusted me because you believed I loved my son."
"Didn't you?"
The older woman looked toward the window overlooking the sea.
"I did."
"I simply loved him differently."
Elena laughed quietly.
"There is nothing loving about what you did."
"No?"
"If Julian had known about the threats..."
"He would have abandoned the merger."
"So?"
"He would have destroyed everything his father built."
Elena shook her head.
"He would have chosen us."
"Exactly."
For the first time...
Isabella's voice carried genuine emotion.
"And that is why I couldn't let him know."
Eight Months Earlier
The Rossi family boardroom overlooked Milan's financial district.
Around the polished walnut table sat twelve directors.
Projected onto the screen was one title:
Project Atlas
The largest acquisition in Rossi Group history.
A merger worth nearly four billion euros.
Julian stood at the head of the table.
Confident.
Prepared.
Determined.
"This acquisition changes everything."
Several directors nodded.
Only Isabella remained expressionless.
She already knew something Julian didn't.
Two hours after the meeting ended...
A black envelope arrived at Isabella's private office.
No return address.
Inside were three photographs.
Julian leaving headquarters.
Elena entering a charity gala.
The Rossi family estate.
Beneath them...
A handwritten note.
Withdraw from Project Atlas.
Or the wife dies first.
Isabella immediately contacted private security.
Within hours, additional threats arrived.
Anonymous phone calls.
Encrypted emails.
Vehicles following Elena through the city.
Someone wasn't bluffing.
The police suspected corporate espionage.
The Rossi security team suspected organized crime.
But no one could identify the source.
Then...
Another message arrived.
This one was different.
She doesn't need to die.
She only needs to disappear.
Back in the present...
Elena quietly asked,
"Did you ever tell Julian about those messages?"
"No."
"Why?"
"Because I knew exactly what he would do."
"He would protect me."
"He would destroy the merger."
"And?"
"And the Rossi Group would collapse."
Elena looked down.
"So you chose the company."
"I chose survival."
She slowly opened the contract.
Every clause returned like an old nightmare.
Section 3
Employee relocation.
No contact with Julian Rossi.
No communication through third parties.
No disclosure of pregnancy.
Monthly financial assistance through anonymous accounts.
Violation of any condition would terminate protection.
Elena stopped reading.
"There was never any financial assistance."
Isabella frowned.
"What?"
"I never received a single payment."
The older woman's expression changed.
"Impossible."
"I lived in a staff dormitory."
"I cleaned hotel rooms."
"I skipped meals."
"I sold my jewelry to buy prenatal vitamins."
Silence.
Isabella reached for another folder.
Bank transfer confirmations.
Every monthly payment appeared on paper.
Transferred.
Approved.
Completed.
Yet Elena had never received a cent.
"Someone intercepted the money."
Elena answered bitterly.
"Just like someone intercepted Julian's letters."
The two women looked at each other.
For the first time...
They shared the same realization.
Someone had manipulated them both.
Meanwhile...
Julian met Marco in the hotel's underground parking garage.
Marco handed him another file.
"I finally found Project Atlas."
Julian opened it.
"What about it?"
Marco pointed to one page.
"The acquisition failed."
"I know."
"It didn't fail naturally."
Marco laid several corporate ownership charts across the hood of his car.
"Three weeks after Elena disappeared..."
"...a competing investment group purchased the company you wanted."
Julian frowned.
"So?"
"The investment group was represented by the same law firm..."
"...that created Valmont Holdings."
Julian's heartbeat quickened.
"The company my mother used."
Marco nodded.
"It gets worse."
He pointed to another document.
The law firm's largest client wasn't Isabella Rossi.
It was a private investment consortium called Blackstone Meridian Capital.
Julian had heard the name before.
Once.
Years ago.
A ruthless financial syndicate known for hostile takeovers.
Corporate blackmail.
Political influence.
And making inconvenient people disappear.
"They weren't after Elena," Julian whispered.
Marco nodded.
"They were after you."
At the same time...
Victor Salazar stood inside the hidden surveillance room.
A security officer approached.
"The cameras picked up Julian meeting with someone in the parking garage."
Victor looked irritated.
"Who?"
"Marco Benedetti."
Victor's face darkened.
"They're connecting the dots."
"What do we do?"
Victor stared at Elena's live camera feed.
She was quietly folding towels in the basement laundry room.
His phone rang.
Private number.
He answered immediately.
"Yes?"
The voice on the other end was calm.
Female.
"Bring Elena to me tonight."
Victor nodded.
"And Julian?"
A brief pause.
"He's becoming a problem."
The line went dead.
Victor slowly lowered the phone.
That evening...
Elena finished her shift nearly three hours late.
She walked slowly toward the employee dormitory carrying a small paper bag with groceries.
Bread.
Milk.
Two apples.
Nothing more.
She paused halfway across the staff courtyard.
Someone called her name.
"Mrs. Rossi."
She turned.
A courier stood beside a black sedan.
"I have something for you."
He handed her a thick envelope.
No return address.
Inside...
A copy of the original contract.
But this version contained handwritten notes in the margins.
Not Isabella's handwriting.
Someone else's.
One sentence had been circled repeatedly in red ink.
Protection ends when the merger closes.
Elena frowned.
The merger had failed.
Which meant...
The contract should have ended months ago.
So why was she still trapped?
She turned another page.
A second handwritten note appeared.
This one chilled her to the bone.
The contract was never about protecting Julian.
It was about controlling him.
Elena's hands began to shake.
At that exact moment...
A black SUV rolled quietly into the employee parking lot.
Two men stepped out.
Neither wore hotel uniforms.
Neither smiled.
One of them politely asked,
"Mrs. Rossi?"
Elena instinctively stepped backward.
"We've come to take you somewhere."
Before she could react—
A familiar voice echoed across the courtyard.
"Get away from my wife."
Julian stood at the entrance, his expression colder than she had ever seen.
For the first time in eight months...
He wasn't asking for answers.
May you like
He was ready to fight for them.
