Chapter 9 – The Billion-Dollar Betrayal

Chapter 9 – The Billion-Dollar Betrayal
The corridor outside Operating Room Three fell silent.
No one spoke.
No one moved.
Julian stared at the obstetrician as though he had misheard him.
"You believe someone hit her?"
The doctor removed his surgical mask and answered carefully.
"I'm saying the trauma is inconsistent with a simple fall."
He held Julian's gaze.
"There was localized blunt-force impact to the lower abdomen."
"It deserves a criminal investigation."
Detective Olivia Grant immediately opened her notebook.
"We'll need the complete medical report."
"You'll have it within the hour," the doctor replied.
Then he looked back at Julian.
"Your wife is awake."
"Only for a few minutes."
"You may see her."
Julian entered the recovery room slowly.
The steady rhythm of medical monitors filled the quiet space.
Elena looked impossibly pale against the white hospital sheets.
An IV line disappeared beneath the blanket.
There were dark circles beneath her eyes, but when she saw Julian...
She smiled.
Weakly.
"I'm sorry I scared you."
Julian reached for her hand.
"You don't ever apologize to me again."
A tear rolled down her cheek.
"Is he..."
"Our son is alive."
She closed her eyes.
A single tear escaped.
"Thank God."
For several moments, neither spoke.
They simply held each other's hands.
Eight months of silence...
Reduced to one shared heartbeat.
Finally, Julian whispered,
"The doctor thinks someone hurt you."
Elena's fingers stiffened.
She looked away.
"It doesn't matter."
"It matters to me."
"It shouldn't."
"Who?"
Silence.
"Elena..."
She closed her eyes.
"I don't know."
But Julian knew she was lying.
Not to deceive him.
To protect someone.
Or perhaps...
To protect him.
A gentle knock interrupted them.
Detective Grant stepped inside.
"I'm sorry to disturb you."
She looked at Elena kindly.
"When you're strong enough, I'd like to ask a few questions."
Elena nodded faintly.
"Later."
"Of course."
Grant placed a sealed evidence envelope on the bedside table.
"We recovered this from your housekeeping uniform."
Elena's eyes widened.
"The memory card..."
"You knew it was there?" Julian asked.
Elena looked at him, then slowly nodded.
"I never had the chance to remove it."
Julian frowned.
"What's on it?"
"I don't know everything."
"You hid something without knowing what it contained?"
Elena took a shaky breath.
"The person who gave it to me..."
"...said it could destroy everyone responsible."
Detective Grant immediately sealed the room.
"No one touches that evidence until our digital forensics team arrives."
Julian looked at Elena.
"Who gave it to you?"
She hesitated.
Then whispered,
"Luca."
An hour later...
Luca Ferraro was nowhere to be found.
His employee dormitory room was empty.
His phone was disconnected.
His locker had been cleared out.
Only one item remained.
A folded piece of paper taped beneath the shelf.
It contained seven handwritten words.
Trust nobody inside the Rossi Group.
Marco arrived carrying another stack of corporate records.
His face was grim.
"I found the missing piece."
Julian looked up.
"What is it?"
"The merger."
Marco spread dozens of documents across the hospital conference table.
Contracts.
Shareholder reports.
Offshore banking records.
Everything pointed to one conclusion.
Project Atlas had never been just another acquisition.
It had been a trap.
"Look at the timeline."
Marco pointed to the first document.
"Nine months ago..."
"Rossi Group announced Project Atlas."
Julian nodded.
"I remember."
"Within forty-eight hours..."
"...someone quietly began purchasing Rossi stock through offshore companies."
Julian frowned.
"So?"
"They weren't investing."
"They were positioning themselves."
Marco slid another chart forward.
When the merger collapsed after Elena disappeared...
Rossi Group shares plunged almost thirty percent.
Within days...
The same offshore companies bought billions of euros worth of stock at discounted prices.
Julian stared silently.
"They wanted the merger to fail."
Marco nodded.
"And they needed you emotionally destroyed."
Detective Grant joined them.
"Our cybercrime division finished tracing Valmont Holdings."
Julian looked up.
"What did they find?"
"It wasn't the real owner."
Marco sighed.
"I guessed as much."
Grant continued.
"The shell company leads to another shell company."
"And another."
"Eventually..."
"...everything ends with Blackstone Meridian Capital."
Julian slowly leaned back in his chair.
"The investment consortium."
Grant nodded.
"They orchestrated the takeover."
"But here's the interesting part."
She opened another file.
"The person who first introduced Blackstone to Project Atlas..."
"...worked inside Rossi Group."
Julian frowned.
"Who?"
Grant slid a personnel file across the table.
The photograph stared back at him.
A familiar face.
Silver hair.
Perfect posture.
His breath caught.
"No..."
The file read:
Isabella Rossi
Former Chairwoman.
Strategic Advisor.
Board Voting Member.
Marco broke the silence.
"Your mother wasn't the mastermind."
Julian looked at him.
"What?"
"She was manipulated."
Grant nodded in agreement.
"We believe someone convinced Isabella she was protecting both her family and the company."
"While secretly using her decisions to seize control."
Julian rubbed his temples.
"So she became their weapon."
"Exactly."
At that moment...
A nurse entered carrying a tiny bassinet.
Inside...
Wrapped in a blue blanket...
Lay Julian's son.
For the first time...
Father and child met.
The baby's tiny fingers instinctively wrapped around Julian's index finger.
Julian felt his throat tighten.
"So small..."
The nurse smiled.
"He fought very hard."
Julian gently lifted his son into his arms.
Marco quietly stepped back.
Detective Grant looked away, giving them privacy.
Julian whispered,
"I should have been there from the beginning."
The baby stirred.
As if answering.
Behind the nursery window...
Elena watched from her wheelchair.
Despite the pain...
She smiled through tears.
For the first time in months...
She allowed herself to imagine a future.
A real one.
That hope lasted less than five minutes.
A hospital orderly rushed toward Detective Grant.
"Detective!"
She turned.
"What happened?"
"The evidence room."
Grant's expression hardened.
"What about it?"
"The memory card..."
"...is gone."
Silence.
Everyone looked at one another.
Grant immediately drew her radio.
"Lock down every exit."
The orderly shook his head.
"Too late."
"The thief left something behind."
He handed her a folded white envelope.
Inside was a single photograph.
It showed Julian holding his newborn son through the nursery glass.
The photograph had been taken...
Less than two minutes earlier.
On the back, written in neat black ink, were eight chilling words:
Now you know what it feels like to lose family.
Julian looked around the hospital corridor.
Someone had been watching.
Not just Elena.
Not just the hotel.
Now...
They were watching his son.
The billion-dollar conspiracy was no longer about controlling a corporation.
It had become something far more personal.
May you like
And far more dangerous.
