Chapter 10 – Cross Examination

Chapter 10 – Cross Examination
The photograph lay on the conference table like a silent threat.
Julian stared at the image of himself holding his newborn son.
It had been taken only minutes earlier.
Inside a secure maternity ward.
That meant one terrifying fact.
Whoever was orchestrating the conspiracy no longer needed the hotel's surveillance system.
They had people inside the hospital.
Detective Olivia Grant sealed the photograph inside an evidence bag.
"No one leaves this floor."
Within seconds, uniformed officers locked down every entrance to the maternity wing.
Nurses protested.
Doctors complained.
Patients asked questions.
No one was allowed through.
Julian stood beside the nursery window, his son sleeping peacefully behind the glass.
He looked at Detective Grant.
"Find whoever took that picture."
Grant nodded.
"I already have a better idea."
"What?"
"We're going to make them believe they've already won."
Forty-Eight Hours Later
The Rossi Group headquarters in downtown Chicago had been transformed into the center of two investigations.
One corporate.
One criminal.
The boardroom, usually reserved for billion-dollar negotiations, now resembled a courtroom.
Long polished table.
Recording equipment.
Company attorneys.
Police detectives.
Federal financial investigators.
Every statement would be recorded.
Every lie documented.
At the head of the table sat Julian Rossi.
Not as a grieving husband.
Not as a billionaire CEO.
But as the man determined to expose every person who had stolen eight months of his family's life.
On the table before him rested a thick binder.
Across the cover, his attorney had typed three simple words:
THE EVIDENCE FILE
The first witness entered.
Victor Salazar.
He walked confidently into the room, dressed in an expensive navy suit despite his suspension.
His lawyer took the seat beside him.
Victor smiled politely.
"I've cooperated fully."
Julian didn't return the smile.
"We'll see."
The company's legal counsel activated the recording system.
"This internal inquiry is now in session."
"Mr. Salazar..."
"Were you responsible for supervising Elena Moretti?"
"Yes."
"Did you ever threaten her?"
"No."
"Did you ever withhold her personal mail?"
"No."
"Did you ever physically touch her?"
"No."
Every answer came without hesitation.
Without emotion.
Without fear.
Julian quietly slid a laptop across the table.
"Play Video One."
The screen illuminated.
Security footage from Suite 1708.
Victor tearing Julian's letter into pieces.
Victor grabbing Elena's wrist.
Victor saying:
'You belong here now.'
The room fell silent.
Victor's confident smile disappeared.
Julian asked calmly,
"Would you like to revise your previous answers?"
Victor swallowed.
"I..."
"My words were misunderstood."
Julian leaned forward.
"Were your hands misunderstood too?"
Victor's attorney quickly interrupted.
"My client denies any criminal intent."
Julian nodded.
"Very well."
"Play Video Two."
A second recording appeared.
This time from the hidden surveillance room.
Victor ordering additional rooms assigned to Elena after learning she was pregnant.
His own voice echoed through the speakers.
'Increase her workload.'
'She'll never finish.'
'I know.'
No one spoke.
The silence was louder than any accusation.
Detective Grant finally broke it.
"Mr. Salazar..."
"Were you aware that forcing a heavily pregnant employee into hazardous labor may constitute criminal negligence?"
Victor lowered his eyes.
"I followed instructions."
Julian looked up sharply.
"Whose instructions?"
Victor remained silent.
The next witness entered.
General Manager Adrian Keller.
Unlike Victor, Keller looked exhausted.
His hands shook slightly as he took the oath.
Julian asked the first question.
"Did you know Elena's letters were being withheld?"
"Yes."
"Why?"
"I was told not to interfere."
"By whom?"
Keller hesitated.
"Victor."
Julian shook his head.
"No."
"Who gave Victor his authority?"
Keller looked toward the company's attorneys.
Then toward Detective Grant.
Finally...
He answered.
"Mrs. Isabella Rossi."
The room erupted in murmurs.
Julian remained expressionless.
He had expected the answer.
Still...
Hearing it spoken aloud hurt more than he imagined.
"Did my mother ever instruct you to harm Elena?"
"No."
"Did she order Elena to be overworked?"
"No."
"Did she know the letters were intercepted?"
Keller looked genuinely conflicted.
"I don't believe she did."
Julian frowned.
"You don't believe?"
"I know she ordered Elena kept away from you."
"But..."
"But what?"
"Victor stopped reporting everything."
Detective Grant immediately leaned forward.
"Explain."
Keller took a deep breath.
"At first..."
"Victor submitted weekly reports to Mrs. Rossi."
"Then suddenly..."
"He stopped."
"When?"
"About six months ago."
"Why?"
"He said..."
"'The situation has evolved.'"
Julian exchanged a glance with Marco.
Someone had removed Isabella from the chain of information.
Someone wanted her to believe everything was under control...
While running a completely different operation behind her back.
The hearing paused briefly.
During the break, Marco approached Julian.
"I checked Victor's financial records."
"And?"
"He couldn't afford that suit."
Julian frowned.
"What do you mean?"
Marco handed him several bank statements.
"His hotel salary is two hundred thousand dollars a year."
Julian nodded.
"So?"
"Someone deposited twelve million dollars into offshore accounts under his control."
Julian's eyes narrowed.
"Twelve million..."
"When?"
Marco pointed to the dates.
"Immediately after Elena disappeared."
The hearing resumed.
Victor returned to the witness chair.
Julian quietly placed the bank records before him.
"Can you explain these deposits?"
Victor glanced down.
His face turned pale.
"They're..."
"My investments."
"Twelve million dollars?"
"I've been fortunate."
Julian smiled for the first time all day.
It wasn't a friendly smile.
"You've never purchased a single share of stock."
"You've never owned real estate."
"You have no inheritance."
"So tell us again..."
"How exactly were you fortunate?"
Victor said nothing.
Julian opened another folder.
"This is your phone log."
He slid it across the table.
"You called one number three hundred and seventeen times in eight months."
Victor stared at the paper.
Julian continued.
"The number isn't registered to the hotel."
"It isn't registered to my mother."
"It belongs to Blackstone Meridian Capital."
Victor's breathing became uneven.
Detective Grant stood.
"Mr. Salazar..."
"You are now under criminal investigation for conspiracy, unlawful surveillance, obstruction of justice, and suspected human trafficking."
Victor looked around the room desperately.
No one met his eyes.
Not his lawyer.
Not Keller.
Not the board members.
He was alone.
Just then, the conference room doors opened.
Everyone turned.
Isabella Rossi walked inside.
Elegant as always.
But today...
There was no confidence in her eyes.
She looked directly at Julian.
"I heard my name."
Julian slowly stood.
"So did I."
He gestured toward the empty witness chair.
"Sit down, Mother."
The room fell completely silent.
For the first time in her life...
Isabella Rossi wasn't entering as the most powerful person in the room.
She was entering as the next witness.
May you like
And Julian intended to ask the questions no son ever wanted to ask his own mother.
