Chapter 8 – Blood on the Marble Floor

Chapter 8 – Blood on the Marble Floor

The two men froze.

Julian strode across the employee parking lot with the quiet confidence of a man who had spent his entire life walking into hostile boardrooms.

Only this time, the stakes weren't measured in billions.

They were measured in heartbeats.

Elena's heartbeat.

Their son's heartbeat.

The taller of the two strangers forced a polite smile.

"Mr. Rossi."

"You know who I am."

"We're here on business."

Julian stopped between them and Elena.

"My wife isn't."

The shorter man reached into his jacket.

Julian's muscles tensed.

Instead of a weapon, he produced a leather folder.

"Our employer would like to continue a private conversation."

Julian didn't even glance at it.

"My answer is no."

"You haven't heard the proposal."

"I don't negotiate over my family."

The taller man sighed.

"That's unfortunate."

Before anyone could react, Victor Salazar appeared from the hotel's staff entrance.

"There you are, Elena."

He looked deliberately past Julian, addressing the strangers instead.

"I'll take her from here."

Julian turned slowly.

"No."

Victor smiled.

"She's still an employee."

"Not anymore."

Victor's smile faded.

"I'm afraid she signed a contract."

Julian stepped closer until they were only inches apart.

"Then I'm terminating it."

"You can't."

"I can."

"I'm one of the principal shareholders."

"And you're fired."

Victor laughed.

"You don't have that authority."

A calm female voice interrupted.

"Actually..."

Everyone turned.

General Manager Adrian Keller had just walked into the courtyard.

His expression was unusually tense.

"He does."

Victor blinked.

"What?"

Keller swallowed.

"Mr. Rossi called an emergency meeting with the Board this afternoon."

He looked directly at Victor.

"Your employment has been suspended pending investigation."

Victor's face went pale.

Before anyone could speak again—

Elena gasped.

A sharp pain ripped through her abdomen.

She doubled over, clutching her stomach.

Julian caught her before she fell.

"Elena?"

She tried to answer.

Instead...

Another wave of pain stole her breath.

Rosa came running from the laundry building.

"Oh, no..."

She looked down.

Then screamed.

"Julian..."

He followed her gaze.

A thin stream of bright red blood slowly spread across the pale marble beneath Elena's feet.

For one terrifying second...

No one moved.

Julian's world stopped.

"No..."

He dropped to his knees.

Blood continued dripping onto the polished stone.

Elena's face had turned ghostly white.

She whispered only one word.

"The baby..."

Dr. Bennett happened to be crossing the courtyard on his way back from the clinic.

The moment he saw the blood, he sprinted.

"Move!"

He knelt beside Elena.

Quickly checking her pulse.

Her breathing.

The baby's position.

His expression hardened immediately.

"We need an ambulance."

"Now!"

Julian didn't wait.

"No."

He scooped Elena into his arms.

Dr. Bennett looked up sharply.

"Mr. Rossi—"

"My helicopter."

The doctor hesitated.

"The city maternity center is twelve minutes away by air."

Julian was already running.

The hotel lobby erupted into chaos.

Guests stepped aside as Julian carried his bleeding wife through the marble entrance.

Camila stood near the reception desk.

Her eyes widened.

"Julian!"

He didn't even look at her.

Blood dripped from Elena's hand onto his white shirt.

One crimson drop after another.

The spotless marble floor of the Grand Alcazar was stained behind them.

Employees watched in stunned silence.

The image would later spread across social media.

Europe's most powerful businessman carrying a pregnant housekeeper through a luxury hotel covered in blood.

No amount of public relations could erase it.

On the rooftop helipad...

The helicopter blades were already spinning.

Marco had arranged everything after Julian's earlier call.

Dr. Bennett climbed aboard beside them.

As the aircraft lifted into the evening sky, Elena weakly reached for Julian's hand.

"I'm sorry."

His eyes filled instantly.

"No."

"I'm sorry."

She smiled through tears.

"I tried to protect you."

"I know."

"I failed."

He gently kissed her forehead.

"You never failed me."

Another contraction hit.

Elena cried out in pain.

The heart monitor attached by Dr. Bennett emitted a rapid series of beeps.

The doctor frowned.

"The baby's heart rate is dropping."

Julian looked up.

"What does that mean?"

"We need to deliver as soon as possible if the distress continues."

Julian tightened his grip on Elena's hand.

"Stay with me."

She nodded weakly.

"Promise me something."

"Anything."

"If something happens..."

"It won't."

"Julian."

His voice broke.

"No."

Tears slid down Elena's cheeks.

"Please."

She placed his hand gently over her stomach.

"Our son..."

"If you have to choose..."

His expression hardened immediately.

"There will never be a choice."

The helicopter landed on the rooftop of St. Gabriel Medical Center.

Doctors and nurses were already waiting with a gurney.

The emergency doors burst open.

Everything became movement.

Voices.

Machines.

Running footsteps.

"Thirty-two weeks pregnant!"

"Possible placental abruption!"

"Blood pressure dropping!"

"Prepare Operating Room Three!"

Julian ran beside the gurney until a nurse stopped him.

"I'm sorry."

"You can't go farther."

He watched helplessly as Elena disappeared through double doors.

Then...

Silence.

Hours passed.

Julian remained outside the operating suite.

His white shirt was still stained with Elena's blood.

He refused to change.

Marco sat beside him.

Neither spoke much.

Finally, Marco quietly asked,

"When did you know?"

Julian stared at the floor.

"The moment I saw the blood."

"Knew what?"

"That none of this was ever about business."

He slowly looked up.

"They wanted to destroy the one thing money can't replace."

Just then...

Detective Olivia Grant from the Chicago Police Department approached.

She introduced herself quietly.

"Mr. Rossi?"

He stood.

"I'm investigating allegations involving the Grand Alcazar Hotel."

Julian nodded.

"I'll cooperate."

She glanced at the bloodstains on his shirt.

"I also received an anonymous package an hour ago."

"What kind of package?"

"A USB drive."

Julian exchanged a quick glance with Marco.

"The surveillance videos."

Detective Grant nodded.

"There was something else."

She handed Julian a sealed evidence bag.

Inside was a tiny electronic device.

No larger than a coin.

"What is it?"

"We found it sewn into the lining of Mrs. Rossi's housekeeping uniform."

Julian frowned.

"A tracker?"

Grant shook her head.

"Worse."

"It's both a GPS tracker..."

"...and a listening device."

Julian felt the air leave his lungs.

"They've been monitoring her every movement."

Grant looked directly into his eyes.

"And likely every conversation she had."

Marco whispered,

"My God..."

At that exact moment...

Inside the operating room...

A nurse carefully removed Elena's housekeeping uniform.

As she cut open the fabric near the collar...

Another small object fell onto the surgical tray.

Click.

The nurse frowned.

"Doctor..."

The obstetrician looked over.

"What is it?"

She picked up the tiny object with forceps.

It wasn't medical equipment.

It wasn't part of the uniform.

It was a miniature memory card.

Hidden inside the stitching.

No one knew how long it had been there.

Or what it contained.

Outside...

The operating room doors remained closed.

A red light above them continued glowing.

Julian stared at it without blinking.

Then, suddenly—

A baby's cry echoed faintly through the corridor.

Everyone stood at once.

Julian's heart leaped.

The doors opened.

A doctor stepped out, still wearing surgical gloves.

There was relief in his eyes...

But also concern.

"Mr. Rossi..."

He paused.

"Your son is alive."

Julian closed his eyes in gratitude.

Then he immediately asked the only other question that mattered.

"And Elena?"

The doctor's expression turned solemn.

"She's alive..."

"...but she's lost a great deal of blood."

"We've stabilized her."

"However..."

He hesitated.

"When we examined the placental injury..."

"...it didn't look accidental."

Julian's face drained of color.

"What are you saying?"

The doctor met his gaze.

"It appears someone may have struck her abdomen..."

"...within the last twenty-four hours."

The corridor fell into stunned silence.

This was no longer just a family tragedy.

May you like

It was a criminal assault.
