Chapter 3 – A Child He Never Knew

Chapter 3 – A Child He Never Knew

Victor Salazar disappeared down the corridor before Julian could follow.

The words lingered in the air.

He knows.

Knows what?

That Julian had found Elena?

That the letters had been hidden?

Or that the carefully constructed lie separating husband and wife was beginning to collapse?

Julian gripped the stack of unopened envelopes until the paper crumpled beneath his fingers.

Someone had stolen eight months of his marriage.

Someone was about to answer for it.

He left Human Resources without another word.

The first place he went wasn't the lobby.

It wasn't his suite.

It was the Housekeeping Department.

The basement level of the Grand Alcazar looked nothing like the glamorous hotel above.

Gone were the crystal chandeliers and polished marble.

Instead, fluorescent lights buzzed overhead.

Industrial washing machines thundered nonstop.

Carts filled with stained linens rolled through narrow hallways.

Employees hurried past with their heads down, careful not to slow the rhythm of an endless workday.

Julian spotted a young housekeeper folding towels.

"Excuse me."

She looked up nervously.

"Yes, sir?"

"I'm looking for Elena Moretti."

The young woman hesitated.

Before she could answer, she glanced over her shoulder to make sure no supervisor was nearby.

"She's on the tenth floor."

"Room inspections."

Julian thanked her.

As he turned to leave, she quietly added,

"Please..."

He stopped.

"Don't let Mr. Salazar know I told you."

The elevator doors opened onto the tenth floor.

Julian walked quickly down the corridor until he heard a familiar cough.

Elena.

She stood outside Room 1016, struggling to lift a heavy bag of fresh linens onto her cart.

Her movements were slower than the night before.

Every step looked painful.

She paused, pressing one hand against the small of her back.

The baby shifted beneath her uniform.

Julian instinctively stepped forward.

"Let me help."

She immediately shook her head.

"No."

"You shouldn't be lifting that."

"I said no."

Her voice was calm.

But her eyes begged him to leave.

Before either of them could speak again, another housekeeper hurried toward Elena.

She was an older woman in her late fifties with gentle eyes and silver-streaked hair.

"Elena, are you all right?"

"I'm fine, Rosa."

"No, you're not."

Rosa took the linen bag from her hands.

"You've been having contractions since yesterday."

Julian froze.

Contractions?

Elena shot Rosa a warning look.

"It's nothing."

Rosa sighed.

"You keep saying that."

Then she noticed Julian.

Her expression immediately changed.

"So..."

She whispered softly.

"You're the husband."

Elena closed her eyes.

"Rosa..."

But the older woman ignored her.

She looked directly at Julian.

"You should have been here months ago."

Julian's heart tightened.

"I didn't know where she was."

Rosa studied him carefully.

Then, almost as if she were trying to decide whether to trust him, she quietly asked,

"You really didn't know?"

He slowly shook his head.

"I searched everywhere."

Rosa looked back at Elena.

Tears welled in her eyes.

"Oh, child..."

Before anyone could continue, Elena suddenly gasped.

Her knees buckled.

She grabbed the wall for support.

The linen cart rolled away.

Julian caught her before she hit the floor.

"Elena!"

She tried to push him away.

"I'm okay."

She wasn't.

Her breathing had become shallow.

One hand instinctively wrapped around her stomach.

Rosa didn't hesitate.

"I'm calling the clinic."

"No!"

Elena's voice was sharp.

"I can't miss another shift."

Rosa stared at her in disbelief.

"They'll fire me."

Julian looked at Elena as if he no longer recognized the woman in front of him.

"You think I'm worried about your job?"

She looked at him with exhausted eyes.

"I'm worried about surviving."

Within minutes, the hotel's medical clinic received her.

The resort physician, Dr. Samuel Bennett, gently examined Elena while Julian waited outside.

He paced the hallway like a man awaiting judgment.

Every minute felt like an hour.

Finally, the examination room door opened.

Dr. Bennett stepped outside.

"She's stable."

Julian exhaled.

"But she needs rest."

"Is the baby okay?"

The doctor frowned.

"You know she's been under significant physical stress?"

Julian blinked.

"I only found her yesterday."

The doctor's expression shifted.

"You... didn't know?"

"No."

Dr. Bennett glanced back toward the closed examination room.

Then lowered his voice.

"Mr. Rossi..."

"I normally can't discuss a patient's medical information."

Julian nodded.

"I understand."

"But she listed no emergency contact."

"No family."

"No spouse."

"And she's been refusing to let us notify anyone."

The doctor paused.

"I assumed she was alone."

Julian swallowed hard.

"She's not."

Dr. Bennett studied him for a long moment.

Finally, he spoke.

"How far along do you believe the pregnancy is?"

Julian answered honestly.

"I don't know."

The doctor looked surprised.

"She's thirty-two weeks."

Julian's mind immediately began calculating.

Thirty-two weeks.

Eight months.

His pulse quickened.

He remembered the exact date Elena disappeared.

He remembered the night before.

Their anniversary.

The last night they had spent together.

The baby...

His knees felt weak.

Dr. Bennett quietly confirmed what Julian had already realized.

"Based on the timeline in her records..."

"The child was conceived before she disappeared."

Julian closed his eyes.

His voice cracked.

"My child."

The doctor nodded gently.

"I believe so."

Tears stung Julian's eyes.

He had spent eight months mourning the loss of his marriage.

All that time...

He had been a father without knowing it.

Dr. Bennett wasn't finished.

"There is something else."

Julian looked up.

The doctor's face had grown serious.

"When Elena first arrived here..."

"She wasn't just pregnant."

"She was injured."

Julian felt a chill run through his body.

"What kind of injuries?"

The doctor opened a confidential file.

"Bruised ribs."

"Severe dehydration."

"A mild concussion."

"Deep bruising around both wrists."

Julian's hands slowly clenched.

"How?"

"We asked."

"What did she say?"

Dr. Bennett sighed.

"She claimed she fell."

"You believed her?"

"No."

The doctor continued.

"There were bruises on her upper arms."

"Finger-shaped."

"Consistent with someone grabbing her."

Julian's heartbeat accelerated.

The bruises he'd seen the previous night.

There had been older ones beneath them.

This wasn't new.

It had been happening for months.

Dr. Bennett pulled out an ultrasound image.

"This was taken the week she arrived."

Julian accepted it with trembling hands.

A tiny profile.

Small fingers.

A beating heart.

His child.

He stared at the image until the room blurred.

"I missed everything."

The doctor remained silent.

"The first heartbeat."

"The first kick."

"Every appointment."

His voice broke.

"I wasn't there."

Dr. Bennett gently placed another document on the table.

One sentence had been highlighted.

Patient repeatedly refuses to identify the father.

Julian frowned.

"Why would she do that?"

The doctor answered quietly.

"Because she kept saying the same thing."

"What?"

"She said..."

'If they know who the baby's father is... they'll kill him.'

Julian looked up sharply.

"They?"

"I asked who she meant."

"And?"

"She wouldn't answer."

At that moment, the examination room door slowly opened.

Elena stood there.

Still pale.

Still exhausted.

But standing.

She saw the ultrasound image in Julian's hands.

For several long seconds, neither of them spoke.

Finally, Julian looked at her.

His voice was barely above a whisper.

"He's mine..."

Elena's eyes filled with tears.

She didn't deny it.

She couldn't.

Instead, she looked down at her stomach and gently rested her hand over it.

"Yes."

One word.

Soft.

Broken.

True.

Julian felt his world stop.

He stepped closer.

"So all this time..."

"You've been carrying our son alone."

A tear slipped down Elena's cheek.

"I had no choice."

He shook his head.

"You always had me."

She looked at him with heartbreaking sadness.

"No, Julian."

"They made sure I didn't."

Before he could ask who "they" were, Elena suddenly stiffened.

Her eyes locked on something behind him.

The color drained from her face.

Julian turned.

Standing at the end of the clinic hallway...

Victor Salazar watched them.

He wasn't alone.

Beside him stood a sharply dressed woman wearing oversized sunglasses despite being indoors.

Camila.

She slowly removed the glasses.

A faint smile curved across her lips.

Then she said something Julian couldn't hear.

Victor nodded.

He took out his phone.

And somewhere else in the hotel...

Another phone began to ring.

Someone higher up had just received the news.

Julian Rossi had learned the truth.

The child Elena carried...

May you like

Was his.
