Chapter 5 – The Camera in Suite 1708

Chapter 5 – The Camera in Suite 1708

Julian didn't sleep.

He spent the entire night sitting in the dark living room of the presidential suite, staring at the ownership documents Marco had emailed him.

The Grand Alcazar had changed hands exactly nine months earlier.

One month before Elena disappeared.

The controlling company—Valmont Holdings S.A.—looked like nothing more than another Luxembourg investment fund.

But the signature authorizing every major decision belonged to one woman.

Isabella Rossi.

His mother.

Julian read the documents again.

And again.

The dates matched too perfectly to be coincidence.

At sunrise, Marco called again.

"I dug deeper."

"What did you find?"

"Valmont Holdings owns twelve luxury hotels."

Julian remained silent.

"Only one has an unusually high turnover in housekeeping staff."

"The Grand Alcazar."

"How high?"

"Nearly sixty percent every year."

Julian frowned.

"Why?"

Marco hesitated.

"According to anonymous employee reviews..."

"...people don't quit."

"They disappear."

Julian immediately headed for the hotel.

He ignored the elegant breakfast buffet.

Ignored the smiling staff.

Ignored Camila's unanswered text messages.

His destination was clear.

Suite 1708.

The room had already been checked out.

Housekeeping was preparing it for the next VIP guest.

The "Do Not Enter" sign hung on the door.

Julian used his executive access card.

The lock clicked.

He stepped inside.

Everything looked immaculate.

Fresh flowers.

Perfectly folded linens.

Spotless marble.

No sign that Elena had been on her hands and knees scrubbing the bathroom floor just hours earlier.

No sign that she had whispered,

They're watching me.

Julian slowly walked through the suite.

He examined every corner.

Every smoke detector.

Every light fixture.

Nothing.

Then...

He noticed something unusual.

A decorative brass clock mounted high on the living room wall.

It wasn't centered.

It pointed slightly downward.

Toward the sofa.

Toward the entrance.

Julian stepped closer.

The face of the clock reflected light oddly.

Not glass.

A lens.

His heartbeat quickened.

He carefully removed the clock from the wall.

Hidden behind it...

A tiny wireless camera.

Professional grade.

Nearly invisible.

Still recording.

Julian stared at it.

The hotel wasn't just monitoring guests.

Someone had hidden surveillance equipment inside luxury suites.

Without consent.

Without disclosure.

He took several photographs before carefully replacing the clock exactly as he had found it.

Whoever was watching couldn't know he had discovered it.

Not yet.

He searched the rest of the suite.

Bedroom.

Dining area.

Bathroom.

One camera became two.

Two became four.

One hidden inside a smoke detector.

Another behind a decorative mirror.

A third concealed in an air-conditioning vent.

The final one inside a digital thermostat.

Every major room was covered.

Every angle.

Nothing escaped the lenses.

His phone vibrated.

Marco.

"You're not going to like this."

"What now?"

"I checked building permits."

"So?"

"The surveillance system wasn't installed when the hotel was built."

"When was it added?"

"Eight months ago."

The exact week Elena began working there.

Julian's pulse accelerated.

Eight months.

Again.

Every trail led back to the same moment.

The same disappearance.

The same people.

Meanwhile...

On the eighteenth floor...

Elena pushed her housekeeping cart into Suite 1814.

Her movements were slower than ever.

She glanced briefly toward the ceiling before quietly closing the door.

Then she stood completely still.

Listening.

Waiting.

After nearly thirty seconds...

She finally whispered,

"I know you're there."

No answer.

She walked to a large painting above the fireplace.

Her fingers gently traced the frame.

There.

The tiny pinhole.

Another camera.

She looked directly into it.

Not afraid.

Simply tired.

Then she quietly returned to work.

Several floors below...

Inside the security office...

Rows of monitors displayed nearly every hallway, elevator, and service corridor.

But another wall of screens remained hidden behind a locked steel door.

Victor Salazar entered using a fingerprint scanner.

Inside...

Live video feeds from selected guest suites appeared.

Including Suite 1708.

And...

Suite 1814.

Victor watched Elena cleaning in silence.

A security officer looked over.

"She's slower today."

Victor nodded.

"She's exhausted."

"Should we reduce her workload?"

Victor smiled coldly.

"No."

"Increase it."

The officer frowned.

"She's pregnant."

Victor's answer came without hesitation.

"That's not my concern."

He picked up a radio.

"Assign Elena three additional suites."

The officer looked uncomfortable.

"She'll never finish."

Victor looked back at the screen.

"I know."

At noon...

Rosa found Elena sitting alone in the staff cafeteria.

She had only a cup of water in front of her.

"No lunch?"

Elena smiled weakly.

"I lost today's meal voucher."

Rosa understood immediately.

Victor had taken it.

Again.

Without a word, Rosa split her own lunch in half.

"You need this more than I do."

Elena quietly accepted.

"Thank you."

Neither woman noticed someone watching from across the room.

A young maintenance technician.

His name tag read:

Luca Ferraro

He discreetly took out his phone.

He snapped a photograph of Victor standing in the doorway, watching Elena eat.

Then he quietly left.

That afternoon...

Julian requested temporary access to the hotel's maintenance department.

As a principal shareholder, no one questioned him.

Within minutes, he met Luca.

The young technician looked nervous.

"You wanted to see me?"

Julian nodded.

"I have questions."

Luca glanced around before speaking.

"Not here."

They walked to the underground parking garage.

Only then did Luca relax.

"I've been waiting for someone to ask."

Julian studied him carefully.

"You know about the cameras."

Luca's face changed.

"How did you..."

"I found them."

Luca exhaled slowly.

"Then you're already in danger."

Julian folded his arms.

"Who installed them?"

"I don't know."

"But I maintain them."

"You maintain illegal surveillance equipment?"

"I didn't have a choice."

Luca looked down.

"They threatened my father."

Julian frowned.

"Who gave the orders?"

Luca answered immediately.

"Victor."

"And?"

Luca hesitated.

"He wasn't acting alone."

Julian waited.

Finally...

Luca pulled a small USB flash drive from his pocket.

"I've been copying footage for months."

Julian stared.

"What kind of footage?"

"The kind nobody was supposed to see."

That evening...

Inside Julian's suite...

The two men connected the flash drive to a laptop.

Hundreds of video files appeared.

Each file was labeled by room number and date.

Luca clicked one.

Suite1708_06-14.mp4

The video began.

It showed Elena entering the room with her housekeeping cart.

She looked around nervously.

Victor entered moments later.

The timestamp read:

Two months earlier.

Julian leaned forward.

On the recording...

Victor closed the suite door behind him.

He stood much too close to Elena.

She immediately stepped back.

Victor smiled.

"You've received another letter."

Elena's eyes widened.

"From whom?"

"You already know."

"My husband?"

Victor pulled an envelope from his jacket.

Julian recognized his own handwriting.

Victor slowly tore the envelope in half.

Then into quarters.

The pieces drifted onto the carpet.

"He stopped writing months ago."

Elena stared silently.

Victor laughed.

"Looks like even billionaires get tired of abandoned wives."

Julian's hands shook.

"He lied to her..."

Luca nodded.

"Every letter."

The video continued.

Victor grabbed Elena's wrist.

Hard.

The exact place where Julian had seen bruises.

"You belong here now."

Elena struggled to pull away.

"Please let me go."

Victor squeezed harder.

"You'll leave when you're told."

She finally broke free.

Victor straightened his tie as though nothing had happened.

Before leaving, he quietly said,

"Remember."

"Someone is always watching."

The door closed.

Elena stood alone.

Then...

She quietly picked up the torn pieces of Julian's letter from the floor.

She pressed them against her chest.

And silently cried.

Julian couldn't watch anymore.

He slammed the laptop shut.

The room fell silent.

Luca swallowed.

"There are dozens more videos."

Julian looked at the flash drive.

His voice had become frighteningly calm.

"Make three copies."

Luca blinked.

"What?"

"One for me."

"One for my attorney."

"And one..."

Julian looked toward the glittering hotel outside the window.

"...for the police."

At that exact moment, a notification appeared on Julian's phone.

Unknown Number.

Only one sentence.

Stop digging, or Elena and the baby won't leave this hotel alive.

Julian read the message once.

Then looked back at the laptop.

The war was no longer about saving his marriage.

It was about saving his family.

And somewhere inside the Grand Alcazar...

May you like

Someone had just declared war first.
