CHAPTER 1 — THE FOOTAGE THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

CHAPTER 1 — THE FOOTAGE THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

Marcus Thorne had seen men lie with smiles on their faces.

He had watched billion-dollar negotiations collapse over a single sentence.

He had stood across tables from people who would destroy entire companies without blinking.

But he had never seen anything that prepared him for the footage on his security chief's tablet.

The video began with Khloe standing beside the window.

Seven months pregnant.

One hand resting protectively over her stomach.

The other holding the edge of a chair.

Across from her stood Isabella Rossi.

Red dress.

Red lipstick.

Cold eyes.

Marcus watched without speaking.

His security chief, Daniel Reed, stood beside him.

“Sir,” Daniel said quietly, “we recovered the complete recording from the private suite.”

Marcus didn't look away.

“Play it.”

The video continued.

Isabella stepped closer to Khloe.

“You were supposed to stay quiet.”

Khloe's expression tightened.

“Get out.”

Isabella smiled.

“You still don't understand, do you?”

Marcus's jaw tightened.

Daniel paused the recording.

“Do you want me to stop?”

“No.”

Marcus's voice was barely audible.

“Keep playing.”

The video resumed.

Isabella moved closer.

“You think being pregnant makes you untouchable?”

Khloe looked toward the door.

“You're insane.”

“No.”

Isabella's smile disappeared.

“I'm tired.”

Then she shoved Khloe.

Hard.

Khloe stumbled backward.

Her shoulder struck the side table.

The glass fell.

Shattered.

Marcus's fingers curled around the edge of the desk.

But the worst hadn't happened yet.

Isabella grabbed Khloe's arm.

“Listen to me.”

Khloe tried to pull away.

“Don't touch me.”

Isabella shoved her again.

Khloe lost her balance.

Her body slammed into the table.

She cried out.

Then Isabella lifted her foot.

Marcus whispered:

“No.”

The heel struck Khloe's side.

Khloe collapsed.

The video showed her immediately curling around her stomach.

Protecting the baby.

Marcus stared at the screen.

His breathing became slow.

Controlled.

Too controlled.

Daniel had seen that expression before.

It was the look Marcus wore immediately before destroying someone's career.

But this time there was something darker behind it.

Isabella stepped over Khloe.

“You should have listened.”

Khloe looked up at her.

“Why?”

Isabella leaned down.

“Because your husband was never supposed to love you.”

Marcus froze.

Daniel looked at him.

Neither spoke.

The video continued.

Isabella whispered:

“You were supposed to have the baby, sign the papers, and disappear.”

Khloe stared at her.

“What papers?”

Isabella smiled.

“The ones your husband doesn't know about.”

Marcus's face went completely still.

Daniel stopped the recording.

“Sir.”

Marcus didn't respond.

“Sir, there's more.”

Marcus turned slowly.

“What do you mean?”

“The footage from this room was only one camera.”

He tapped the screen.

“We recovered six.”

Marcus stared at him.

“Six?”

“Yes.”

“Then why did I only know about one?”

Daniel hesitated.

“Because someone disabled the internal security system before the gala.”

Marcus's eyes narrowed.

“Who?”

“We're still tracing it.”

“Play the other footage.”

Daniel nodded.

The second angle showed the hallway.

Isabella entered the suite at 10:41 p.m.

But she wasn't alone.

A man followed her.

Tall.

Dark suit.

Face partially hidden.

Marcus leaned closer.

“Who is that?”

“We don't know yet.”

The man handed Isabella a small envelope.

She opened it.

Read something.

Then looked toward the hallway.

The man said something.

There was no audio.

Isabella nodded.

Then he left.

Marcus looked at Daniel.

“Enhance his face.”

“We've tried.”

“And?”

“His face is deliberately obscured.”

“By what?”

Daniel hesitated.

“Someone knew where the camera was.”

Marcus's expression hardened.

“Keep going.”

The footage switched.

Isabella entered Khloe's suite.

The man remained outside.

For the next several minutes, he watched the hallway.

Then something unexpected happened.

He took out his phone.

Made a call.

And spoke for almost two minutes.

Daniel increased the audio.

Static filled the room.

Then a voice became audible.

“She's inside.”

A pause.

“Yes.”

Another pause.

“Khloe is still refusing.”

Marcus looked at Daniel.

Daniel looked back.

The voice continued.

“Then make sure she signs.”

Marcus's stomach tightened.

“Who is he talking to?”

Daniel shook his head.

“We don't know.”

The man ended the call.

Then looked directly toward the security camera.

Marcus leaned forward.

The man smiled.

Not accidentally.

Not because he had noticed the camera.

He smiled because he knew exactly where it was.

Then he raised one finger.

And slowly drew it across his throat.

The video ended.

Silence filled the room.

Marcus stared at the black screen.

“Who the hell was that?”

Daniel didn't answer.

Marcus stood.

“Find him.”

“We're already trying.”

“No.”

Marcus's voice hardened.

“Don't try.”

He stepped closer.

“Find him.”

“Yes, sir.”

“And Isabella?”

Daniel hesitated.

“She hasn't left the hospital.”

Marcus turned toward the door.

“Good.”

Daniel followed.

“Sir?”

Marcus stopped.

“What?”

“You should know something else.”

“What?”

“The hospital administrator called.”

“And?”

“He says someone attempted to access Khloe's medical records twenty minutes ago.”

Marcus's face changed.

“Who?”

“The request came through your family medical office.”

Silence.

“My family?”

“Yes.”

Marcus stared toward the hospital corridor.

His family.

His wife.

His mistress.

A missing security recording.

A hidden man.

Secret documents.

And now someone trying to access Khloe's medical records.

It was no longer an affair.

It was an operation.

And Khloe was the target.

Marcus entered the hospital suite.

Isabella was sitting on the sofa.

Her red dress was stained with a few drops of blood.

Not hers.

She looked up.

“Marcus.”

He didn't answer.

She stood.

“I can explain.”

“You have thirty seconds.”

Her face tightened.

“What?”

“Explain what happened.”

She took a breath.

“She attacked me.”

Marcus stared at her.

“Khloe attacked you?”

“Yes.”

“While seven months pregnant?”

“Yes.”

“She attacked you.”

“Yes.”

“And that's why you kicked her?”

“I was defending myself.”

Marcus said nothing.

Isabella stepped closer.

“Marcus, you know how jealous she's been.”

He stared at her.

“You're lying.”

Her expression changed.

“Excuse me?”

“I watched the footage.”

Isabella froze.

For the first time that evening, she had no immediate answer.

Marcus walked past her.

“You shoved her.”

Silence.

“You shoved her twice.”

Isabella's eyes filled with tears.

“I was angry.”

“You kicked her.”

“I lost control.”

“You kicked my pregnant wife.”

She lowered her head.

“I didn't mean to hurt the baby.”

Marcus looked at her.

“That's what you say now.”

She reached for his hand.

He pulled away.

“Marcus.”

“Don't touch me.”

She stopped.

“You don't understand.”

“Then make me understand.”

Isabella swallowed.

“She was going to destroy everything.”

“What?”

“She was going to take you away from me.”

Marcus stared.

“You thought hurting my pregnant wife would make me love you?”

“No.”

“Then what?”

Isabella's voice dropped.

“I thought it would make you hate her.”

Marcus felt something cold move through him.

“You wanted me to hate my wife.”

“She doesn't deserve you.”

“And you do?”

Isabella looked at him.

“I love you.”

Marcus laughed once.

There was no humor in it.

“No.”

She flinched.

“You love what you thought you could get from me.”

“That isn't true.”

“Then tell me about the papers.”

Her face went pale.

“What papers?”

“The ones you told Khloe about.”

Isabella said nothing.

Marcus stepped closer.

“You said she was supposed to sign something.”

“I was angry.”

“You said my wife was supposed to have the baby, sign the papers, and disappear.”

Isabella's breathing changed.

“You heard that?”

“Yes.”

She looked toward the door.

Marcus noticed.

“Who was outside?”

“No one.”

“Wrong answer.”

“Marcus—”

“Who was the man?”

She froze.

Marcus knew.

He stepped closer.

“You're going to tell me.”

“I don't know what you're talking about.”

“Then why are you afraid?”

She said nothing.

Marcus turned toward Daniel.

“Call the police.”

Isabella's eyes widened.

“No.”

Marcus looked at her.

“You assaulted a pregnant woman.”

“I didn't mean—”

“You attempted to manipulate medical records.”

“No.”

“You were involved with a man outside the suite.”

“I don't know him.”

“You're lying.”

She began crying.

“Marcus, please.”

He didn't move.

“You had one chance to tell me the truth.”

She stared at him.

“I love you.”

Marcus's voice was cold.

“That stopped mattering the moment you put your foot against her stomach.”

A nurse rushed into the room.

“Mr. Thorne.”

Marcus turned immediately.

“How is my wife?”

“The doctors are still monitoring her.”

“The baby?”

“The baby's heartbeat is stable.”

Marcus closed his eyes.

For one second, relief crossed his face.

Then the nurse continued.

“But there are signs of trauma.”

His eyes opened.

“What kind?”

“We won't know until the tests are complete.”

Marcus nodded.

“Do whatever you need.”

The nurse looked at Isabella.

Then at the security officers.

“Can I speak to you privately?”

Marcus followed her into the hallway.

She lowered her voice.

“Mr. Thorne, there's something you should know.”

“What?”

“Mrs. Thorne was given medication earlier tonight.”

Marcus frowned.

“Medication?”

“Yes.”

“By whom?”

“We're investigating.”

“What medication?”

The nurse hesitated.

“Something that wasn't listed on her chart.”

Marcus felt his blood run cold.

“Was it dangerous?”

“We don't know yet.”

“Who administered it?”

“The record says a private physician authorized it.”

“Name?”

The nurse handed him a printout.

Marcus looked at the name.

Dr. Vincent Hale.

He knew that name.

His family's private physician.

The same doctor who had treated his father.

The same doctor who had signed off on his mother's medications.

And the same doctor who had been present at every major Thorne family event for the last fifteen years.

Marcus stared at the paper.

“Where is he?”

The nurse shook her head.

“He left the hospital twenty minutes ago.”

Marcus immediately called Daniel.

“Find Dr. Hale.”

Daniel answered.

“Already on it.”

“Don't let him leave the city.”

“Yes, sir.”

“And Daniel?”

“Yes?”

“Lock down every medical record connected to Khloe.”

“Already done.”

Marcus hung up.

Then he looked through the glass toward Khloe's room.

She was lying motionless beneath the white sheets.

One hand rested over her stomach.

Even unconscious, she was protecting their child.

Marcus placed his palm against the glass.

“I should have protected you.”

His voice cracked.

“I should have seen it.”

Behind him, Isabella watched.

And for the first time, she realized something.

She had not just lost Marcus.

She had created the one enemy she could no longer control.

At 2:13 a.m., Marcus received another call.

Daniel.

“Sir.”

“What?”

“We found the man from the footage.”

Marcus stood.

“Where?”

“Outside the hospital.”

Marcus's heart stopped.

“Alive?”

“Yes.”

“Bring him in.”

“We can't.”

“Why?”

“Because he's dead.”

Silence.

“What?”

“He was found in a parking garage.”

Marcus closed his eyes.

“How?”

“Single gunshot.”

“When?”

“Approximately fifteen minutes ago.”

Marcus stared at the hospital window.

Someone was eliminating witnesses.

He asked:

“Did he have anything on him?”

“Yes.”

“What?”

“A phone.”

“Anything else?”

Daniel hesitated.

“A photograph.”

“Of whom?”

“Khloe.”

Marcus felt cold.

“Send it to me.”

His phone buzzed.

A photograph appeared.

Khloe.

Taken six months earlier.

Standing outside Marcus's office.

Pregnant.

Smiling.

But that wasn't what frightened him.

Written across the back of the photograph were four words:

THE CHILD IS THE KEY.

Marcus stared at the message.

Then another file arrived.

A scanned document.

It was an old legal agreement.

His name.

Khloe's name.

And an unfamiliar company.

THORNE FAMILY FOUNDATION — SUCCESSION TRUST

Marcus opened the document.

His eyes moved down the page.

Then stopped.

The unborn child was listed as the primary beneficiary.

Not of millions.

Not of shares.

Of everything.

The Thorne family's controlling assets.

The company.

The private holdings.

The international trusts.

Everything.

Marcus whispered:

“They're not trying to destroy my marriage.”

Daniel's voice came through the phone.

“No, sir.”

Marcus stared at Khloe through the glass.

“They're trying to control my child.”

Daniel was silent.

Then he said:

“Sir, there's one more thing.”

Marcus closed his eyes.

“What now?”

“We traced the phone call the man made outside Khloe's room.”

“To whom?”

Daniel hesitated.

“The number belongs to someone inside the Thorne family.”

Marcus's face hardened.

“Who?”

Daniel answered.

And Marcus felt the ground disappear beneath him.

“It belongs to your father.”

Marcus stared at the hospital room.

His father had been dead for three years.

At least, that was what everyone believed.

Then his phone rang again.

Unknown number.

Marcus answered.

For several seconds, there was only silence.

Then a man's voice spoke.

Calm.

Deep.

Familiar.

“Hello, son.”

Marcus stopped breathing.

He knew that voice.

Every son knew the voice of the man who had once defined his childhood.

His father.

The man whose funeral Marcus had attended.

The man whose ashes he had personally scattered.

The man who was supposed to be dead.

Marcus's fingers tightened around the phone.

“Dad?”

A quiet laugh came through the line.

“You finally saw the truth.”

Marcus looked through the glass at Khloe.

Then at Isabella.

Then at the security footage still frozen on the screen.

His father spoke again.

“Now you understand why Khloe had to disappear.”

Marcus's voice became dangerously quiet.

“If you touch my wife…”

His father interrupted.

“I don't want your wife, Marcus.”

A pause.

“I want what she's carrying.”

Marcus felt his blood run cold.

“The child belongs to me.”

The line went dead.

Marcus stood completely still.

For the first time that night, he understood the real enemy.

It wasn't Isabella.

It wasn't the mysterious man.

It wasn't even his father's financial empire.

The woman in the red dress had been only a weapon.

The dead man had been only a messenger.

The attack had been only the beginning.

Someone had been planning this pregnancy long before Khloe ever knew she was carrying his child.

Marcus looked through the glass.

Khloe slowly opened her eyes.

Their gazes met.

She couldn't hear him through the glass.

But Marcus pressed his hand against it.

Khloe raised her trembling hand.

And placed it against his from the other side.

Marcus closed his eyes.

He had spent years building an empire.

Tonight, he finally understood what it meant to have something worth losing.

He would burn the entire empire down before he allowed anyone to take his wife or his child.

And somewhere in the darkness beyond the hospital windows, someone was already making the next move.
