CHAPTER 3 — THE SECRET ISABELLA WAS HIDING

CHAPTER 3 — THE SECRET ISABELLA WAS HIDING

By nine the next morning, Marcus had stopped sleeping.

He had stopped pretending he could.

Every time he closed his eyes, he saw the same image.

Khloe on the hospital floor.

Isabella standing over her.

The red dress.

The broken glass.

The raised heel.

And then the words that had changed everything.

The child is the key.

Marcus stood inside the private interrogation room beneath Thorne Medical Center.

Isabella sat across from him.

For the first time since he had known her, she looked small.

The confidence was gone.

The perfect makeup was gone.

Even the carefully practiced expression of innocence had disappeared.

Only fear remained.

Marcus placed a tablet on the table.

He pressed play.

The footage appeared.

Isabella watched herself shove Khloe.

Once.

Twice.

Then kick her.

She closed her eyes.

“Turn it off.”

Marcus didn't.

The video continued.

“You were supposed to stay quiet.”

Isabella looked away.

“Marcus, please.”

“You told Khloe she was supposed to sign papers.”

Silence.

“You told her she was supposed to have my child and disappear.”

Isabella swallowed.

“I was angry.”

“No.”

Marcus stopped the video.

“You were prepared.”

She looked at him.

“You knew exactly what you were doing.”

“I lost control.”

“You entered the room carrying a hidden recording device.”

Her face changed.

Marcus leaned forward.

“You knew the security cameras were disabled.”

Isabella said nothing.

“You knew which hallway was unmonitored.”

Still nothing.

“You knew a man was waiting outside.”

Her breathing became uneven.

Marcus placed another photograph on the table.

The man from the footage.

“Who is he?”

“I don't know.”

“Wrong.”

“I swear.”

“Then explain why he called you seventeen minutes before you attacked Khloe.”

Isabella stared at the photograph.

Marcus watched her carefully.

“Who is he?”

She finally whispered:

“His name is Adrian Voss.”

Marcus recognized the name.

His expression darkened.

“Voss Capital?”

Isabella nodded.

Marcus leaned back.

Adrian Voss was one of the most aggressive private-equity investors in the country.

He had spent years trying to buy pieces of Thorne Industries.

Marcus had rejected every offer.

Every time.

Voss had eventually stopped asking.

Marcus had assumed the war was over.

It wasn't.

He simply hadn't seen the battlefield.

“Why would Voss care about Khloe?”

Isabella didn't answer.

Marcus slid another document across the table.

A financial transfer.

Three million dollars.

Sent to Isabella six weeks earlier.

From an offshore company.

Her eyes dropped to the document.

“You were paid.”

“No.”

“You received three million dollars.”

“It wasn't for Khloe.”

“Then what was it for?”

She looked away.

Marcus's voice became colder.

“Tell me.”

Isabella closed her eyes.

“It was for information.”

“What information?”

“Your company.”

Marcus stared at her.

“What did you give him?”

“Nothing important.”

Marcus laughed bitterly.

“You nearly killed my wife.”

“I didn't know it would go this far.”

“You sold him information.”

“Only financial projections.”

“Which ones?”

“Acquisition targets.”

“Which ones?”

She finally looked up.

“The companies your board planned to buy.”

Marcus's jaw tightened.

“How long?”

“Six months.”

Six months.

Marcus stared at her.

Six months of secret transfers.

Six months of stolen information.

Six months of someone inside his company feeding Voss Capital everything it needed.

And Isabella had been sitting beside Marcus every night pretending to love him.

But that still didn't explain Khloe.

“Why did Voss want her?”

Isabella shook her head.

“I didn't know.”

“Don't lie.”

“I swear.”

Marcus stood.

He walked to the window.

Outside, San Francisco was waking.

Thousands of people were beginning ordinary days.

Coffee.

Traffic.

Meetings.

School runs.

Nobody knew that one of the most powerful families in the country was beginning to collapse from the inside.

Marcus turned back.

“You told Khloe she had to disappear.”

Isabella stared at the floor.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because that's what they told me.”

“Who?”

“Voss.”

Marcus's eyes narrowed.

“What exactly did he say?”

Isabella hesitated.

Then whispered:

“He said Khloe couldn't remain your wife.”

“Why?”

“Because if she remained your wife…”

She stopped.

Marcus waited.

“…she would eventually inherit control.”

Marcus frowned.

“Control of what?”

“Everything.”

Marcus sat down again.

“Explain.”

Isabella shook her head.

“I don't understand it completely.”

“Then tell me what you do understand.”

She took a breath.

“Your grandfather created something.”

“The succession trust.”

“Yes.”

Marcus's eyes narrowed.

“You knew about the trust?”

“I knew there was a trust.”

“Who told you?”

“Voss.”

“What did he say?”

“He said the trust wasn't simply about your family wealth.”

Marcus remained silent.

Isabella continued.

“It was designed to prevent outsiders from controlling Thorne Industries.”

“Outsiders?”

“Anyone who wasn't a direct blood heir.”

Marcus thought of Khloe.

His unborn son.

Then the document he had discovered.

The unborn child was listed as primary beneficiary.

But why?

Isabella continued:

“Your grandfather created a succession mechanism.”

Marcus's voice lowered.

“What mechanism?”

“If the Thorne bloodline was ever threatened, control would automatically transfer through the closest protected heir.”

Marcus stared at her.

“And Khloe?”

“She qualifies.”

“Why?”

Isabella looked at him.

“Because of her mother.”

Marcus's blood ran cold.

“Elena Vale.”

Isabella nodded.

“Your grandfather had another family.”

Marcus froze.

“My grandfather?”

“Yes.”

“An entire second family.”

“And Khloe?”

“Was his granddaughter.”

Marcus stared at the table.

Suddenly, pieces began connecting.

The old photograph.

The name Katherine Vale.

The hidden medical records.

The succession trust.

The unborn child.

His father's supposed death.

The mysterious man.

Isabella.

Voss.

None of it was random.

It was a plan.

Marcus stood.

“You knew Khloe was a Vale.”

Isabella nodded.

“When?”

“Before I met her.”

“Who told you?”

“Your father.”

Marcus stopped breathing.

“My father?”

“Yes.”

“But he died.”

Isabella looked at him.

“He isn't dead.”

Marcus stared at her.

“I know.”

She shook her head.

“No.”

Her voice became quiet.

“You don't.”

Marcus frowned.

“What do you mean?”

Isabella leaned forward.

“Your father didn't fake his death to escape.”

Marcus's face hardened.

“Then why?”

“Because he was hiding from Voss.”

“That's impossible.”

“Your father stole something.”

“What?”

“The original succession agreement.”

Marcus's eyes narrowed.

“Why?”

“To prevent Voss from taking control.”

Marcus sat back down.

For the first time, Isabella looked genuinely frightened.

“Marcus, Voss isn't trying to buy your company.”

“What is he trying to do?”

“He's trying to force the succession clause.”

“How?”

“By eliminating every protected heir except one.”

Marcus felt a chill.

“Khloe.”

Isabella nodded.

“Khloe.”

“And the baby.”

“Yes.”

Marcus's voice became barely audible.

“They want my child.”

Isabella shook her head.

“Not exactly.”

“What then?”

“They want the child alive.”

Marcus stared.

“Why?”

“Because once the child is born, the trust activates.”

“And then?”

“Voss can challenge the trust.”

“On what grounds?”

“Paternity.”

Marcus's expression changed.

Isabella continued:

“If he can prove the child isn't yours…”

Marcus interrupted.

“They can't.”

“But if they can make you doubt it…”

Silence.

Marcus remembered Khloe's frightened face.

The words Isabella had whispered.

The baby isn't really yours.

It hadn't been an accusation.

It had been a weapon.

A seed of doubt.

And someone had paid Isabella to plant it.

Marcus suddenly understood.

The attack hadn't been designed to kill Khloe.

It had been designed to frighten her.

To destabilize the pregnancy.

To make Marcus panic.

To create uncertainty.

And perhaps most importantly…

To make him question the child.

He looked at Isabella.

“You weren't trying to kill her.”

She shook her head.

“No.”

“You were trying to make me distrust her.”

“Yes.”

“And if I divorced Khloe…”

Isabella finished the sentence.

“The succession structure could be challenged.”

Marcus stared at her.

“So your affair…”

“Was never the main operation.”

“No.”

“It was a distraction.”

“Yes.”

He laughed once.

Bitterly.

“You made me think I was betraying my wife because I was weak.”

Isabella's eyes filled with tears.

“You were.”

Marcus stared at her.

“You used my weakness.”

“Yes.”

“And you nearly destroyed my family.”

“I know.”

He stood.

Then walked toward the door.

Isabella suddenly rose.

“Marcus.”

He stopped.

“There's something else.”

He didn't turn.

“What?”

“Voss didn't create this plan.”

Marcus slowly turned around.

“Who did?”

Isabella's face had lost all color.

“Your father.”

Marcus stared at her.

“No.”

“He hired Voss.”

“No.”

“He gave him access to the trust documents.”

“No.”

“He told him about Khloe.”

Marcus stepped closer.

“My father would never hurt his own family.”

Isabella whispered:

“He doesn't think Khloe is family.”

Marcus froze.

“He thinks she's a threat.”

The door opened.

Daniel entered.

“Sir.”

Marcus turned.

“What?”

“We found something.”

Daniel handed him a sealed evidence bag.

Inside was a phone.

Marcus recognized it.

“Where did you get this?”

“Isabella's car.”

Isabella's face changed.

“That isn't mine.”

Daniel looked at her.

“It was hidden beneath the spare tire.”

Marcus opened the bag.

The phone was unlocked.

There was one recording.

Marcus pressed play.

Static.

Then a voice.

Isabella's voice.

“She's here.”

A man's voice answered.

“Does Marcus suspect anything?”

“No.”

“Good.”

A pause.

Then another voice entered the recording.

Marcus froze.

His father's voice.

“Once the baby is born, everything changes.”

Isabella whispered:

“What if Khloe refuses?”

His father answered:

“She won't have a choice.”

Marcus's blood turned cold.

Then came the sentence that destroyed whatever remained of his denial.

“If necessary, make Marcus believe the child isn't his.”

The recording ended.

Nobody moved.

Marcus stared at the phone.

His father's voice had been calm.

Cold.

Certain.

Not angry.

Not emotional.

This had been planned.

Months ago.

Maybe years ago.

Daniel looked at him.

“Sir?”

Marcus slowly placed the phone on the table.

“Get everyone.”

“Everyone?”

“Board members.”

Daniel nodded.

“Family?”

“Yes.”

“Lawyers?”

“Yes.”

“Security?”

“Yes.”

Marcus looked toward Isabella.

“And her.”

Isabella stared at him.

“Where are you going?”

Marcus opened the door.

“To my wife.”

Khloe was awake when he entered her room.

She looked exhausted.

But when she saw him, she smiled faintly.

“You're back.”

Marcus walked toward her.

He sat beside the bed.

“I found out why they attacked you.”

Khloe looked at him.

“Why?”

He took her hand.

“Because you're more important to my family than either of us knew.”

Her brow furrowed.

“What does that mean?”

Marcus hesitated.

Then he told her everything.

The trust.

Her grandmother.

The Vale name.

The hidden records.

His father's involvement.

The attack.

The plan to make him question the baby.

Khloe listened without interrupting.

When he finished, she was silent for several seconds.

Then she whispered:

“I knew something was wrong.”

Marcus looked at her.

“What?”

“My mother.”

“What about her?”

“She wasn't afraid of the Thornes.”

Marcus frowned.

“Then who was she afraid of?”

Khloe looked toward the window.

“I asked her once why we moved so often when I was a child.”

“And?”

“She said we weren't running from your family.”

Marcus waited.

“She said we were running from someone who had once been part of it.”

His heart stopped.

“Who?”

Khloe shook her head.

“I don't know.”

Then she looked at him.

“But I remember one name.”

Marcus's fingers tightened around hers.

“What name?”

Khloe whispered:

“Victor.”

Marcus stared at her.

His grandfather.

The dead man at the center of everything.

Then the hospital lights suddenly flickered.

Once.

Twice.

The monitor beside Khloe beeped sharply.

The door opened.

A nurse rushed in.

“Mr. Thorne, you need to step away from the bed.”

“What happened?”

“The fetal monitor just lost the signal.”

Khloe's eyes widened.

Marcus stood.

The hallway lights went dark.

For three seconds, the entire floor disappeared into blackness.

Then the emergency lights came on.

Red.

Dim.

Silent.

Marcus looked toward the door.

A figure was standing at the far end of the corridor.

Watching them.

Before security could reach him, the figure turned and disappeared through the stairwell.

Daniel's voice came through Marcus's earpiece.

“Sir.”

Marcus answered.

“What?”

“We just lost camera coverage on this floor.”

Marcus looked at Khloe.

The fear in her eyes told him she understood.

This wasn't over.

It had only changed shape.

Marcus moved to her bedside.

He took her hand.

“No one is taking you.”

Khloe looked at him.

“And our son?”

Marcus looked toward her stomach.

“No one is taking him either.”

He kissed her forehead.

Then he turned toward the dark hallway.

For the first time in his life, Marcus Thorne wasn't protecting an empire.

He was protecting a family.

And whoever had started this war had made one catastrophic mistake.

May you like

They had given Marcus something worth fighting for.
