CHAPTER 5 — THE CHILD SHE WANTED

CHAPTER 5 — THE CHILD SHE WANTED

Marcus had spent his entire life believing inheritance was about money.

Shares.

Land.

Buildings.

Bank accounts.

Names written on pieces of paper.

He had been wrong.

Inheritance, he would soon discover, could be something far more dangerous.

It could be a shield.

A weapon.

A promise made before a child was even born.

And that morning, inside his grandfather's abandoned estate, Marcus finally discovered why everyone wanted Khloe's unborn son.

The old Thorne estate looked nothing like the luxurious properties associated with the family name.

No gardeners.

No staff.

No expensive cars.

Only tall iron gates covered in rust and an enormous stone mansion surrounded by overgrown trees.

Marcus stepped out of the car.

Daniel followed.

“Are you sure this is the place?”

Marcus looked at the house.

“My grandfather spent the last year of his life here.”

“Alone?”

“So everyone believed.”

Daniel frowned.

“And you?”

“I thought he was hiding from the press.”

Marcus walked toward the entrance.

“Now I'm not so sure.”

The front door opened with a heavy groan.

Dust covered the marble floor.

The chandelier was dark.

Portraits of dead Thorne family members stared down from the walls.

Marcus walked through the entrance hall.

His grandfather's portrait hung at the center.

Victor Thorne.

Cold eyes.

Perfect suit.

Expression unreadable.

Marcus stopped beneath it.

“You knew.”

Daniel looked at him.

“Knew what?”

Marcus stared at the portrait.

“You knew Khloe existed.”

The portrait gave him no answer.

But Marcus suddenly remembered something from childhood.

His grandfather had once told him:

“Blood is not what makes a family.”

Marcus had thought it was a philosophical lesson.

Now he wondered whether it had been a warning.

They reached the study.

The door was locked.

Daniel produced a set of tools.

Marcus shook his head.

“No.”

He reached into his pocket.

Pulled out a small brass key.

Daniel stared.

“Where did you get that?”

“My father gave it to me when I was twenty-one.”

“You've had it all these years?”

“Yes.”

“Why didn't you use it?”

Marcus looked at the door.

“Because he told me never to.”

The key turned.

The lock clicked.

The door opened.

Inside, nothing had been touched.

Bookshelves covered three walls.

A massive desk stood beneath the window.

And behind it was the safe.

Marcus approached.

There was no combination dial.

Only a biometric scanner.

Daniel frowned.

“Fingerprint?”

Marcus placed his hand against it.

Nothing happened.

He tried again.

Still nothing.

Then he remembered.

His grandfather had once told him:

“Some doors don't open for the person you think they were built for.”

Marcus stepped back.

“Khloe.”

Daniel looked at him.

“She needs to be here.”

Two hours later, Khloe arrived under heavy security.

She was still weak from the attack.

Marcus immediately went to her.

“You shouldn't have come.”

She gave him a tired smile.

“You said you needed me.”

“I didn't want to risk you.”

“Neither did I.”

She touched her stomach.

“But apparently everyone else has already decided my son belongs to them.”

Marcus looked at her.

“He doesn't belong to anyone.”

Khloe nodded.

“I know.”

She walked toward the safe.

Marcus watched.

She placed her hand against the scanner.

A green light appeared.

The safe unlocked.

Daniel stepped backward.

Marcus stared.

Khloe looked at him.

“I don't understand.”

Marcus whispered:

“Neither do I.”

The heavy steel door opened.

Inside was a single black box.

No money.

No jewelry.

No documents.

Only one small silver key.

And beneath it, a letter.

Marcus picked it up.

The handwriting was Victor's.

To the child who has not yet been born.

Khloe's eyes filled with tears.

Marcus opened the letter.

He read aloud.

“If you are reading this, then the family has already begun fighting over you.”

Khloe held her breath.

“They will tell you that you are valuable because of what you inherit.”

Marcus continued.

“That is a lie.”

He looked at Khloe.

Then continued.

“You are valuable because your existence prevents any single person from controlling what I built.”

Daniel frowned.

“What does that mean?”

Marcus read the next paragraph.

“The estate is not held in my name.”

Silence.

“The company is not held in my name.”

Marcus's expression changed.

“And the family fortune does not belong to any adult heir.”

Khloe whispered:

“Then who owns it?”

Marcus turned the page.

His face went pale.

“It belongs to the unborn descendant of Elena Vale.”

Khloe stared at him.

“Our son.”

Marcus nodded.

Daniel opened the black box.

Inside were certificates.

Trust documents.

Corporate records.

Bank statements.

But one document stood above everything else.

THORNE LEGACY CHILD TRUST

Created twenty-eight years earlier.

Irrevocable.

Non-transferable.

Protected from creditors.

Protected from marital claims.

Protected from corporate seizure.

Protected from trustees.

And, most importantly—

Protected from any parent.

Daniel read the clause twice.

“Even Marcus can't control it.”

Marcus nodded.

“Not unless the trustee determines he's acting in the child's best interest.”

Khloe stared at the document.

“So no one can take it.”

“Not legally,” Marcus said.

Daniel corrected him.

“Not through ordinary means.”

Marcus looked at him.

“What do you mean?”

Daniel pointed toward another clause.

“The trust has an emergency protection provision.”

“What kind?”

“If someone attempts to force, deceive, abduct, or harm the beneficiary or the beneficiary's mother…”

He stopped.

Marcus's eyes narrowed.

“What happens?”

“The trust automatically freezes all related assets.”

“And then?”

“It transfers control to an independent trustee.”

Marcus stared.

“That means Voss can't touch anything.”

Daniel nodded.

“Neither can your father.”

Khloe whispered:

“Neither can Isabella.”

Marcus looked at her.

“No.”

He took her hand.

“They can't touch our son.”

But Daniel wasn't finished.

“There is another clause.”

Marcus turned.

“What?”

Daniel held up the document.

“The protection only activates when the child is formally recognized as the protected descendant.”

Marcus frowned.

“How?”

Daniel read the final line.

“By genetic confirmation after birth.”

Silence.

Marcus looked at Khloe.

“They need the baby born.”

“Yes.”

“And alive.”

Daniel nodded.

“And legally recognized.”

Marcus suddenly understood the entire operation.

They didn't need to kill Khloe.

They needed to control her until the baby was born.

Then they could challenge the trust.

Unless they could prevent the recognition process.

Or manipulate the test.

Or…

Marcus looked at Khloe.

“Someone could try to steal the baby after birth.”

Khloe's face went white.

Back at the hospital, Isabella was being questioned.

She had spent hours refusing to speak.

Until Daniel arrived.

He placed a photograph on the table.

The black box.

Isabella's expression changed instantly.

“You found it.”

“Yes.”

She swallowed.

“What does Marcus know?”

“Enough.”

She looked away.

“Then we're all in danger.”

“Who is 'we'?”

She didn't answer.

Daniel leaned forward.

“You told us Voss wanted control.”

“He does.”

“But someone else wants something different.”

Isabella closed her eyes.

“Yes.”

“Who?”

She whispered:

“Marcus's father.”

Daniel's jaw tightened.

“What does he want?”

“The child.”

“Why?”

“Because the trust doesn't recognize him as the rightful heir.”

Daniel stared.

“Then why would he want the baby?”

Isabella looked at him.

“Because he believes he can change that.”

“How?”

“He has spent years trying to find a way around the trust.”

“And?”

“He failed.”

“Until now?”

She nodded.

“Until Khloe became pregnant.”

Daniel understood.

The unborn child was not simply a beneficiary.

He was the lock.

And everyone was fighting to possess the key.

That evening, Marcus returned to Khloe's room.

She was sitting beside the window.

She looked exhausted.

But determined.

“Did you find everything?”

Marcus nodded.

“Yes.”

“What did my grandfather leave?”

“A protection trust.”

“For our son?”

“For our son.”

She touched her stomach.

“What happens after he's born?”

“He becomes the legal beneficiary.”

“And then?”

“He inherits control of the protected assets.”

Khloe stared at him.

“Control?”

Marcus nodded.

“Not just money.”

She looked confused.

“The trust owns shares in Thorne Industries.”

Her eyes widened.

“How many?”

Marcus hesitated.

“Fifty-one percent.”

Khloe stared.

“Majority control?”

“Yes.”

She slowly sat back.

“So our son would control the company.”

“Eventually.”

“And everyone knows?”

“Not everyone.”

“Who does?”

Marcus looked at her.

“Apparently enough people.”

Khloe's expression darkened.

“That explains Isabella.”

“Yes.”

“And Voss.”

“Yes.”

“My father?”

Marcus went silent.

Khloe understood.

“He wants it too.”

“I don't know what he wants.”

“But you suspect.”

Marcus nodded.

“I suspect he wants to control our son.”

Khloe looked down.

Then whispered:

“He'll never get him.”

Marcus sat beside her.

“I won't let him.”

She looked at him.

“Marcus.”

“Yes?”

“If something happens to me…”

“No.”

“Listen.”

He shook his head.

“Don't say that.”

“If something happens to me, you protect him.”

“I will.”

“Even from your own family.”

Marcus looked into her eyes.

“Especially from my own family.”

That night, Marcus received a call.

Unknown number.

He answered.

No voice.

Only breathing.

Then a recording played.

Khloe's voice.

From the hospital.

A private conversation.

Her voice was unmistakable.

“I don't know if Marcus is the father.”

Marcus froze.

The recording continued.

“I was afraid to tell him.”

Then it ended.

Marcus stared at the phone.

He knew it was fake.

He knew someone had edited it.

But they wanted him to hear it.

They wanted doubt.

They wanted fear.

And most importantly—

They wanted him to question Khloe.

Marcus walked into her room.

She was asleep.

He stood beside her.

For one terrible second, he stared at her stomach.

Then the memory of Isabella's words returned.

Make Marcus believe the child isn't his.

Marcus closed his eyes.

He knew the truth.

But someone was trying desperately to make him forget it.

At 2:13 a.m., the hospital's fire alarm activated.

Doors opened.

Nurses rushed into the hallway.

Patients were moved toward emergency exits.

Security teams scattered.

Marcus woke instantly.

Daniel ran into the room.

“Sir!”

“What happened?”

“Fire alarm.”

“Real fire?”

“We don't know.”

Then the lights went out.

The room became black.

Khloe grabbed Marcus's arm.

“Marcus.”

“I'm here.”

A door opened somewhere in the corridor.

Footsteps.

One.

Two.

Three.

Getting closer.

Marcus moved in front of Khloe.

Daniel drew his weapon.

“Who's there?”

Silence.

Then a man's voice.

“Mr. Thorne.”

Marcus recognized it.

Adrian Voss.

“What do you want?”

“You already know.”

Marcus tightened his grip on Khloe's hand.

“You're not taking my wife.”

A soft laugh came from the hallway.

“I don't want your wife.”

Marcus froze.

“I want the child.”

Khloe's eyes widened.

Marcus stepped toward the door.

“You'll never get him.”

Voss answered calmly:

“You misunderstand.”

A pause.

“I don't need to take him.”

Another pause.

“I only need to make you give him to me.”

The lights suddenly returned.

The hallway was empty.

But on the floor outside the room was a single envelope.

Marcus opened it.

Inside was a legal document.

A custody petition.

Filed before the baby was even born.

The petitioner was not Adrian Voss.

Not Isabella.

Not Marcus's father.

It was a woman named Elena Vale.

Khloe stared at the name.

Her face went completely white.

“That's my mother.”

Marcus looked at her.

“Your mother is dead.”

Khloe slowly shook her head.

“No.”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I thought she was.”

Marcus stared at the document.

At the bottom was a handwritten note.

Ask your mother why she disappeared.

Khloe's hands began to tremble.

Then the hospital phone rang.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

Marcus answered.

No one spoke.

Then a woman's voice whispered:

“Khloe?”

Khloe froze.

She recognized it.

The voice she had heard in childhood.

The voice she had dreamed about for years.

Her mother's voice.

“Mom?”

A pause.

Then Elena said:

“Don't trust Marcus's father.”

The line went dead.

Khloe stared at the phone.

Marcus stood frozen beside her.

Because now the greatest mystery wasn't who wanted their child.

It was why Khloe's supposedly dead mother had suddenly returned.

May you like

And what she knew about the Thorne family.
