CHAPTER 12 — THE HEIR'S SECRET

CHAPTER 12 — THE HEIR'S SECRET
Marcus couldn't move.
The photograph was still on his phone.
Khloe was alive.
That should have been enough.
But standing beside her was a man who was supposed to have been dead for six years.
His father.
Richard Thorne.
Marcus stared at the photograph until the screen blurred.
“No.”
Daniel stood beside him.
“Marcus…”
“No.”
He zoomed in.
The image was unmistakable.
The silver hair.
The scar above the eyebrow.
The dark coat.
His father's face.
Richard Thorne.
Alive.
And standing beside Khloe.
Marcus's entire understanding of his life collapsed in a single instant.
“Where is she?”
The message came back.
Unknown location.
“Who sent this?”
Your father's security team.
Marcus's hands tightened around the phone.
“My father's security team?”
Daniel nodded.
“It appears they've been operating independently for years.”
Marcus looked toward the boardroom doors.
“Then Richard has been alive this entire time.”
“Yes.”
“And Khloe knew?”
Daniel hesitated.
“I don't know.”
Marcus's eyes hardened.
“I do.”
He picked up the phone.
He called Khloe.
It rang once.
Then she answered.
“Marcus.”
Her voice was trembling.
“Tell me the truth.”
Silence.
“Khloe.”
“I know.”
“Is my father alive?”
Another silence.
Then:
“Yes.”
Marcus closed his eyes.
“How long have you known?”
“Since before we met.”
The answer hit harder than anything Victor had done.
Marcus sat down.
“You knew.”
“Yes.”
“You knew my father was alive.”
“Yes.”
“And you married me anyway.”
“I loved you.”
“That isn't enough.”
“I know.”
Marcus stared at the floor.
“Then tell me everything.”
Khloe took a breath.
“I will.”
Khloe had never been poor.
That was the first secret.
She had simply believed she was.
Her mother had raised her in a modest home.
They never lived extravagantly.
They rarely traveled.
They drove old cars.
They shopped carefully.
When Khloe asked why they didn't have more money, her mother always gave the same answer.
“Because money makes people dangerous.”
Khloe had believed her.
Until the year her mother died.
After the funeral, Khloe found a letter.
It contained one instruction.
Do not open the blue box until someone from the Thorne family comes looking for you.
Khloe had kept the box.
She never opened it.
Until three years later.
A man came to her apartment.
He introduced himself as a lawyer.
He said her mother had left instructions.
Then he gave her a single sentence.
“You are not who you think you are.”
Khloe thought he was trying to frighten her.
Then he showed her the documents.
Her mother had not merely worked for the Thorne family.
She had been one of the original architects of the Thorne Legacy Trust.
And Khloe was its primary beneficiary.
Marcus listened.
“So my family didn't create the trust.”
“No.”
“Your mother did.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because your grandfather was afraid of what would happen to the company.”
Khloe's voice trembled.
“He believed the Thorne men would eventually destroy each other.”
Marcus frowned.
“Then why put the assets in your name?”
“Because my mother wasn't a Thorne by blood.”
Marcus froze.
“What?”
“She was.”
Khloe paused.
“She was my grandfather's daughter.”
Marcus stared.
“Your mother was my grandfather's daughter?”
“Yes.”
The room went silent.
Marcus suddenly understood.
Khloe wasn't merely connected to the Thorne family.
She was part of it.
By blood.
His grandfather had a daughter nobody knew about.
And that daughter had a child.
Khloe.
The rightful heir.
Marcus stood.
“Why didn't my father know?”
“He did.”
Marcus froze.
“He knew?”
“Yes.”
“Then why did he let me marry you?”
Khloe looked down.
“Because he didn't know I would become the beneficiary.”
Marcus's eyes narrowed.
“What changed?”
“My mother changed the trust.”
“When?”
“Three weeks before she died.”
Khloe continued.
“She removed every male descendant from primary control.”
Marcus stared.
“Why?”
“Because she believed your father would eventually try to seize everything.”
Marcus couldn't breathe.
“And she was right.”
Khloe nodded.
The truth was worse than Marcus had imagined.
The fortune Khloe inherited wasn't simply money.
It was an entire network of protected assets.
Private companies.
Real estate.
Investment funds.
Intellectual property.
Agricultural holdings.
Energy contracts.
International accounts.
And most importantly—
the controlling voting interest in Thorne Industries.
The trust held fifty-one percent of the company's voting rights.
Not Marcus.
Not his father.
Not Victor.
Khloe.
But there was a condition.
She could not exercise full control until she reached a specific age.
And there was another clause.
A marriage to the primary Thorne heir would temporarily activate protective rights.
Marcus finally understood.
Their marriage hadn't created Khloe's power.
It had activated it.
“You married me because of the trust.”
Khloe's eyes filled with tears.
“At first, I married you because of the trust.”
Marcus's heart sank.
“At first?”
“I met you because I was trying to understand your family.”
“And then?”
“I fell in love with you.”
Marcus turned away.
“That doesn't make the beginning less painful.”
“I know.”
“You knew my identity before we met.”
“Yes.”
“You knew my family was watching you.”
“Yes.”
“You knew my father was alive.”
“Yes.”
“And you never told me.”
“I was trying to protect you.”
“From my own father?”
“Yes.”
Marcus laughed bitterly.
“Do you understand how insane that sounds?”
Khloe nodded.
“I do now.”
Marcus walked toward the window.
The city was beginning to wake.
Traffic moved below.
People went to work.
People lived ordinary lives.
His life had stopped being ordinary years ago.
He simply hadn't known it.
“Why didn't you tell me after we married?”
Khloe answered quietly.
“Because I was afraid you would think I had manipulated you.”
Marcus turned.
“You did.”
Tears rolled down her cheeks.
“I know.”
“You made a decision for both of us.”
“I know.”
“You built our marriage around a secret.”
“I know.”
Marcus's voice softened.
“Why?”
Khloe looked at him.
“Because everyone who knew the truth wanted the money.”
She wiped her face.
“Victor wanted it.”
“Your uncle wanted it.”
“Your father wanted it.”
“Your grandfather had fought over it.”
“And I couldn't tell whether you wanted me…”
“Or the inheritance.”
Marcus stared at her.
“You could have trusted me.”
“I wanted to.”
“But?”
“But you were a Thorne.”
The words hurt.
Not because they were cruel.
Because Marcus understood them.
Daniel entered the room.
“We found something.”
Marcus turned.
“What?”
“Your father's location.”
Marcus's expression changed.
“Where?”
“An estate in Oregon.”
“Is Khloe there?”
“Yes.”
Marcus grabbed his coat.
“Then we're going.”
Daniel stopped him.
“There is more.”
“What?”
“Your father contacted the board.”
Marcus froze.
“When?”
“Twenty minutes ago.”
“What did he say?”
Daniel handed him a transcript.
Marcus read it.
Then his face changed.
Richard Thorne had announced that he was alive.
And he was claiming ownership of the entire company.
His argument was simple.
Marcus had been operating under an invalid succession arrangement.
The company had never legally transferred control.
And because Richard was still alive…
he claimed Marcus had no authority.
Marcus looked at Daniel.
“He planned this.”
“Yes.”
“And Victor?”
“Working with him.”
Marcus nodded.
“So they were never enemies.”
“No.”
“They were partners.”
Daniel looked at him.
“Apparently.”
Hours later, Marcus arrived at the Oregon estate.
Security surrounded the property.
He stepped out of the vehicle.
Daniel followed.
Then Marcus saw Khloe.
She stood on the balcony.
Alive.
Safe.
And looking directly at him.
Marcus ran toward her.
She met him halfway.
For several seconds, neither spoke.
Then Marcus pulled her into his arms.
Khloe buried her face against his chest.
“I thought I lost you.”
“I thought you were going to hate me.”
Marcus held her tighter.
“I might.”
She pulled away.
“That would be fair.”
“But I'm still here.”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“So am I.”
Marcus looked at her.
“Tell me one last thing.”
“What?”
“Does the fortune belong to you?”
Khloe nodded.
“Yes.”
“All of it?”
“No.”
Marcus waited.
Khloe took his hand.
“Not all of it.”
She looked toward the house.
“My mother left something for you.”
“For me?”
“Yes.”
“What?”
“The part of the inheritance she never wanted me to control.”
Marcus frowned.
“Why?”
“Because she knew what the Thorne family would do.”
Khloe opened her hand.
Inside was a small key.
“The money isn't the real inheritance.”
Marcus stared.
“Then what is?”
Khloe whispered:
“The evidence.”
Inside the house, Khloe opened a hidden room.
Old documents lined the walls.
Photographs.
Bank records.
Letters.
Contracts.
Everything her mother had collected over decades.
Marcus stared.
“This is enough to destroy Victor.”
“Yes.”
“And my father.”
“Yes.”
“Your mother knew.”
“She knew everything.”
Marcus picked up an old file.
Inside was a photograph of Richard Thorne.
He looked younger.
Standing beside Victor.
And beside them—
Khloe's mother.
Marcus stared.
“What happened between them?”
Khloe's voice became quiet.
“My mother discovered they were moving company money into secret accounts.”
“Victor's accounts?”
“No.”
Marcus looked at her.
“Whose?”
Khloe pointed to the documents.
“Your father's.”
Marcus felt his blood run cold.
Richard had never been Victor's victim.
He had been Victor's partner.
The four hundred million dollars had never been stolen from the Thorne family.
It had been diverted by Richard and Victor together.
The scandal had been fabricated.
Victor had disappeared to protect himself.
Richard had faked his death years later to escape exposure.
And Khloe's mother had spent the rest of her life gathering evidence.
Marcus stared at the files.
“Then why did Victor come back?”
“Because he needed the trust.”
“And why did my father come back now?”
Khloe looked at him.
“Because he knows you found out.”
Suddenly, the lights went out.
Marcus reached for Khloe.
A gunshot echoed downstairs.
Security shouted.
Someone screamed.
Marcus pulled Khloe behind a wall.
Daniel rushed into the room.
“They're inside!”
“Who?”
“Your father's men.”
Marcus looked toward the hallway.
Then heard a familiar voice.
Richard.
“Marcus.”
His father's voice echoed through the house.
“You should have stayed away.”
Marcus stepped into the corridor.
Richard stood at the far end.
Older.
Alive.
Holding a gun.
Marcus stared at him.
“You were supposed to be dead.”
Richard smiled.
“I needed you to believe I was.”
“Why?”
“Because I needed you to become useful.”
Marcus's face hardened.
“You used me.”
“I raised you.”
“You lied to me.”
“I protected you.”
“You destroyed my mother.”
Richard's expression changed.
“I did what I had to do.”
Marcus looked toward Khloe.
“And her?”
Richard's eyes moved to Khloe.
“She was never supposed to inherit.”
Khloe stepped forward.
“My mother made sure I would.”
Richard raised the gun.
“No.”
Marcus moved between them.
“You're not touching her.”
Richard laughed.
“You still don't understand.”
He looked at Marcus.
“Your marriage was never supposed to last.”
Marcus stared.
“Why?”
“Because once Khloe became pregnant, the trust would become permanently activated.”
Marcus froze.
Richard continued:
“And then you would have no reason to remain in control.”
Marcus finally understood.
The baby.
The trust.
The marriage.
The attack.
Everything.
Richard had wanted Khloe gone before the child was born.
Victor had wanted the same thing.
And Isabella had been only another weapon.
Marcus looked at Khloe.
She was crying.
“I knew there was a reason,” she whispered.
Marcus reached for her hand.
“You don't have to hide anymore.”
She squeezed his fingers.
“No.”
Richard raised his gun.
But before he could fire, Daniel stepped behind him.
“Drop it.”
Richard turned.
Daniel stood with several armed officers.
Richard stared.
“You betrayed me.”
Daniel shook his head.
“No.”
“I betrayed Marcus.”
Daniel looked at Marcus.
“Tonight, I chose the right side.”
Richard slowly lowered the weapon.
The officers arrested him.
And as they led him away, he looked at Marcus.
“You think this is over?”
Marcus didn't answer.
Richard smiled.
“You haven't met the person who funded everything.”
Marcus froze.
“Who?”
Richard laughed.
“The person your mother trusted most.”
Then he disappeared through the doorway.
Khloe stood beside Marcus.
Her secrets were finally exposed.
Her inheritance was no longer hidden.
Her mother's truth was finally known.
But one question remained.
Who had funded Richard and Victor?
Who had helped them manipulate the company?
Who had arranged the hospital attack?
And who had ordered Isabella to destroy Khloe before the birth?
Khloe looked at Marcus.
“I think I know.”
“Who?”
She reached into the blue box.
There was one final photograph.
A woman stood beside Richard.
Marcus recognized her immediately.
His face went pale.
It was the woman who had attended every Thorne family wedding.
Every board meeting.
Every funeral.
The woman everyone trusted.
The woman who had helped raise Marcus.
His father's sister.
Eleanor Thorne.
Khloe whispered:
“She was the one my mother was afraid of.”
Marcus stared at the photograph.
And suddenly, he understood.
The person behind the entire conspiracy had never been outside the family.
May you like
She had been sitting at the table with them all along.
