CHAPTER 4 — THE PRENUPTIAL AGREEMENT

CHAPTER 4 — THE PRENUPTIAL AGREEMENT
The document was only eleven pages long.
Marcus had read it dozens of times.
But that morning, sitting alone in the private conference room beneath Thorne Medical Center, he realized he had never truly understood what he had signed.
The first ten pages were ordinary.
Assets.
Liabilities.
Property.
Inheritance.
Business interests.
Marital rights.
Nothing unusual for a marriage involving the heir to a billion-dollar empire.
But the eleventh page was different.
It had been sealed separately.
A handwritten notation appeared across the top.
CONFIDENTIAL — TO BE OPENED ONLY UPON ACTIVATION OF SUCCESSION CLAUSE.
Marcus stared at it.
Daniel stood across the table.
“That's the document your grandfather created?”
“Yes.”
“And Khloe's name appears inside?”
“Not exactly.”
Marcus opened the page.
A paragraph was highlighted.
His eyes moved slowly across the words.
Then he stopped.
“Read this.”
Daniel leaned closer.
Marcus spoke quietly.
“Any property independently acquired by the spouse of a protected heir shall remain the sole property of that spouse and shall not become subject to claims arising from the Thorne succession.”
Daniel frowned.
“So Khloe's property is protected.”
Marcus nodded.
“More than that.”
He pointed lower.
A second paragraph.
“No spouse, relative, trustee, creditor, corporate affiliate, or designated beneficiary may compel transfer, sale, pledge, assignment, or encumbrance of such property without the express written consent of the protected spouse.”
Daniel looked up.
“That's why Isabella couldn't take Khloe's assets.”
Marcus shook his head.
“Not just Isabella.”
He turned the page.
“Anyone.”
The silence that followed was heavy.
Then Marcus found the final sentence.
His expression changed.
“Daniel.”
“Yes?”
“This agreement was signed before I met Khloe.”
Daniel looked confused.
“Then how does it protect her?”
Marcus stared at the document.
“Because my grandfather knew she existed.”
Across the hospital, Isabella sat alone.
She had spent the last three hours trying to contact Adrian Voss.
He hadn't answered.
She called again.
Nothing.
Again.
Nothing.
Finally, a message appeared.
Stop calling me.
Isabella's hands trembled.
She typed:
Marcus found the agreement.
The response came almost immediately.
Which agreement?
She stared at the screen.
Then typed:
The Thorne marriage agreement.
Three dots appeared.
Disappeared.
Appeared again.
Then:
Did he open Schedule Eleven?
Isabella froze.
She didn't know how to answer.
Because she had never heard that name before.
She typed:
What is Schedule Eleven?
No response.
Her stomach tightened.
Then another message arrived.
You were never supposed to know it existed.
Isabella stared at the screen.
A terrible realization settled over her.
She had believed she was working for Voss.
She had believed Voss was controlling the operation.
But now she understood something far worse.
Voss himself was afraid of the document.
Marcus returned to Khloe's room.
She was awake.
“Marcus.”
He sat beside her.
“I found something.”
“What?”
“Your property is protected.”
Khloe frowned.
“My property?”
“The assets you owned before our marriage.”
She looked confused.
“Why would your family care about my property?”
“That's what I'm trying to understand.”
He handed her the document.
She read the highlighted paragraph.
Then looked at him.
“I've never seen this.”
“I know.”
“Who wrote it?”
“My grandfather.”
Khloe's face changed.
“Victor?”
Marcus nodded.
“Why would he protect me?”
“I don't know.”
She looked down at the paper.
Then quietly said:
“Maybe he wasn't protecting me.”
Marcus stared at her.
“What do you mean?”
“Maybe he was protecting something from me.”
The words hung between them.
Marcus suddenly remembered the old photograph.
The hidden records.
The succession trust.
The unborn child.
His grandfather hadn't merely anticipated Khloe.
He had prepared for her.
Years before Marcus ever met her.
That afternoon, Marcus summoned the family's oldest attorney.
Elias Grant arrived at the hospital carrying a black leather case.
He was seventy-two years old.
He had represented the Thorne family for more than four decades.
Marcus trusted very few people.
Elias was one of them.
Or at least he had been.
Marcus placed the prenuptial agreement on the table.
“Explain Schedule Eleven.”
Elias didn't answer.
Marcus stared at him.
“You knew.”
Elias sighed.
“Yes.”
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“Because your grandfather ordered me not to.”
“He's dead.”
“I know.”
“Then why are you still keeping his secrets?”
Elias looked at Khloe.
“Because some secrets were designed to protect you.”
Khloe frowned.
“Protect me from what?”
Elias opened his case.
Inside was another document.
Older.
Yellowed.
Handwritten.
He placed it on the table.
“This was created twenty-nine years ago.”
Khloe stared at it.
Her name wasn't there.
But her mother's was.
ELENA VALE.
Khloe's breathing changed.
“What is this?”
Elias answered quietly.
“The original succession agreement.”
Marcus looked at him.
“Why was it hidden?”
“Because your grandfather discovered that someone inside the family was trying to eliminate the Vale branch.”
Khloe's face went pale.
“Why?”
Elias looked directly at her.
“Because your mother was entitled to something.”
“What?”
“Control.”
Marcus frowned.
“Control of what?”
Elias looked at him.
“Thorne Holdings.”
Silence.
Khloe stared.
“My mother?”
“She was the closest surviving descendant of Victor Thorne's first bloodline.”
Marcus's jaw tightened.
“So my father knew?”
Elias nodded.
“He knew everything.”
“Then why did he say Khloe wasn't family?”
Elias looked away.
“Because admitting the truth would have cost him control.”
Meanwhile, Isabella finally received a call.
Adrian Voss.
She answered immediately.
“What happened?”
His voice was cold.
“Marcus opened Schedule Eleven.”
Isabella swallowed.
“How bad is it?”
“Very.”
“What does it say?”
“You don't need to know.”
“I need to know!”
“You need to understand something.”
“What?”
“Your relationship with Marcus was never the objective.”
Isabella froze.
“What?”
“You were useful because he trusted you.”
“You said—”
“I said you would be rewarded.”
“You promised me Marcus.”
“I promised you a place beside him.”
“That was the same thing!”
“No.”
His voice hardened.
“It wasn't.”
Isabella's eyes filled with tears.
“What happens now?”
“Now?”
“Yes.”
“You disappear.”
She stopped breathing.
“You can't do that.”
“I already have.”
The call ended.
Isabella stared at the phone.
Then she noticed something.
A black car had stopped outside the hospital.
Two men stepped out.
They looked toward the building.
Isabella knew immediately.
They weren't there to protect her.
They were there to silence her.
She ran.
Down the hallway.
Past nurses.
Past visitors.
She nearly collided with Daniel.
He caught her arm.
“Where are you going?”
“Let me go!”
“You're staying here.”
“They're coming for me.”
“Who?”
“Voss.”
Daniel's expression changed.
“What did he do?”
“He wants me dead.”
Daniel stared at her.
“Why?”
“Because I know too much.”
He pulled her into a security room.
“Tell me everything.”
Isabella shook her head.
“I can't.”
“You want protection?”
“Yes.”
“Then start talking.”
She looked at the monitor.
Outside, the black car remained parked.
Finally, she whispered:
“Voss never wanted Marcus's company.”
Daniel frowned.
“What did he want?”
“The succession trust.”
“And Khloe?”
“She is the key to activating it.”
“Why?”
“Because the trust recognizes her bloodline.”
Daniel stared.
“And the baby?”
Isabella's voice dropped.
“The baby is the final beneficiary.”
Daniel went silent.
Then asked:
“What happens if Khloe dies before the baby is born?”
Isabella looked at him.
“The trust freezes.”
“And if the baby dies?”
“It transfers.”
“To whom?”
She swallowed.
“To whoever controls the surviving Thorne line.”
Daniel understood.
“Voss.”
Isabella nodded.
“But that's not the worst part.”
“What is?”
She looked toward the hospital room.
“Someone has already arranged for the trust to recognize a different heir.”
Daniel's eyes narrowed.
“Who?”
Isabella whispered:
“Marcus's father.”
Inside Khloe's room, Marcus was reading the original agreement.
His face became increasingly grim.
At the bottom was a handwritten clause.
One sentence.
If the protected heir marries outside the bloodline, the spouse shall inherit nothing unless the marriage produces a child recognized by the trust.
Marcus looked at Khloe.
“That's why they need our son.”
Khloe nodded slowly.
“And why they wanted to destroy our marriage.”
Marcus continued reading.
Then he stopped.
His expression changed.
“Khloe.”
“What?”
“The agreement doesn't say the child has to be mine.”
She stared at him.
“What?”
“It only says the child must descend from the protected bloodline.”
Khloe's eyes widened.
Marcus read the sentence again.
Then another line caught his attention.
The identity of the biological father shall not affect beneficiary status.
He looked at Khloe.
“Do you understand what this means?”
She shook her head.
Marcus whispered:
“The rumors about our son…”
“They don't matter.”
“No.”
He took her hand.
“They were never trying to prove I wasn't the father.”
Khloe looked confused.
“Then why?”
“To make me think the paternity mattered.”
A cold realization entered Marcus's eyes.
“They wanted me distracted.”
“From what?”
Marcus looked at the document.
“From the real beneficiary.”
Khloe's breathing became shallow.
“Who?”
Marcus turned the page.
There was another name.
A name neither of them expected.
THE FIRST-BORN DESCENDANT OF ELENA VALE.
Khloe stared.
“That isn't my name.”
“No.”
Marcus looked at her.
“Because it isn't referring to you.”
Silence.
Khloe touched her stomach.
“Our son?”
Marcus nodded.
“But if he's the beneficiary…”
He stopped.
A terrible possibility surfaced.
“What?”
Marcus looked at her.
“Then someone has been trying to control your pregnancy because whoever controls your son controls the trust.”
Khloe's eyes filled with fear.
Marcus pulled her closer.
“No one is taking him.”
She whispered:
“What if they try?”
Marcus looked toward the door.
“Then they'll have to go through me.”
That night, Marcus gathered his security team.
“From this moment forward,” he said, “Khloe never leaves this hospital without armed protection.”
Daniel nodded.
“Already arranged.”
“Her medical records are sealed.”
“Yes.”
“Her room gets a twenty-four-hour guard.”
“Yes.”
“And the nursery?”
Daniel hesitated.
Marcus looked at him.
“What?”
“We have a problem.”
“What?”
“The hospital's maternity wing has been accessed.”
Marcus froze.
“By whom?”
Daniel handed him a photograph.
A nurse.
Walking into the restricted area.
But the nurse's face wasn't familiar.
“She entered using a legitimate employee badge.”
Marcus studied the photograph.
“Who issued it?”
Daniel shook his head.
“The badge was created three days ago.”
Marcus looked toward Khloe's room.
“Find her.”
“We already are.”
“And Daniel?”
“Yes?”
“Don't assume she's working alone.”
Daniel nodded.
Because they both understood now.
The attack wasn't an isolated act of violence.
It was part of a carefully constructed plan.
And every time Marcus uncovered one layer…
Another appeared beneath it.
At midnight, Khloe finally fell asleep.
Marcus sat beside her.
He watched the rise and fall of her breathing.
Then his phone vibrated.
Unknown number.
One message.
You opened the agreement.
Marcus stared.
Another message appeared.
Now open the safe.
Marcus's eyes narrowed.
A third message arrived.
A photograph.
It showed an old room.
Dark.
Dusty.
A massive wooden safe stood against the wall.
Marcus recognized it instantly.
His grandfather's private study.
A place that had been sealed since his death.
Then another message appeared.
Your grandfather left the truth there.
Marcus stared at the screen.
Then looked at Khloe.
He knew he should stay.
He knew leaving her was dangerous.
But whatever was inside that safe might be the only thing capable of stopping the people coming for her.
He stood.
Called Daniel.
“Wake the team.”
“Where are we going?”
“My grandfather's estate.”
Daniel paused.
“Sir, that property has been abandoned for three years.”
“I know.”
“Why go now?”
Marcus looked at the sleeping woman beside him.
“Because someone wants me to open the safe.”
He slipped the phone into his pocket.
“And whoever sent that message knows exactly what's inside.”
Marcus walked toward the door.
Behind him, Khloe opened her eyes.
She had heard everything.
And when Marcus disappeared into the hallway, she slowly reached beneath her pillow.
Her fingers closed around a small envelope.
One she had hidden there years ago.
On the front, written in her mother's handwriting, were six words:
Never trust the Thorne family.
Khloe stared at it.
Then whispered to herself:
“I'm sorry, Mom.”
She opened the envelope.
Inside was a photograph.
Victor Thorne.
Elena Vale.
And a baby.
On the back of the photograph was one final sentence.
Marcus is not the man you should fear.
Khloe's hands began to tremble.
Because beneath it was another name.
A name she had never heard before.
May you like
The real heir is still alive.
