CHAPTER 10 — THE WOMAN WHO WAS SUPPOSED TO DISAPPEAR

CHAPTER 10 — THE WOMAN WHO WAS SUPPOSED TO DISAPPEAR
Marcus stared at Daniel's final message.
Victor Hale was listed as the original beneficiary.
It made no sense.
Victor had spent years claiming that the Thorne family had stolen everything from him.
Yet according to Daniel, there was a document suggesting Victor had once been connected to the very trust he was now trying to seize.
Marcus looked at Khloe.
She had gone completely silent.
Too silent.
There was something in her eyes.
Recognition.
Fear.
And guilt.
Marcus noticed it immediately.
“Khloe.”
She looked away.
“What's wrong?”
“Nothing.”
“Don't lie to me.”
She swallowed.
Victor watched them from across the room.
He smiled.
“You really should ask your wife what she knows.”
Marcus turned sharply.
“What does that mean?”
Victor said nothing.
Khloe closed her eyes.
Marcus stepped toward her.
“Khloe.”
Her voice trembled.
“I knew someone was watching me.”
Marcus froze.
“Since when?”
“Before we met.”
The room seemed to become colder.
“How long?”
She looked at him.
“Three years.”
Marcus stared.
“Three years?”
Khloe nodded.
“And you never told me?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because I was afraid.”
“Of whom?”
Khloe's eyes filled with tears.
“Your family.”
Three years before their wedding, Khloe had lived a completely different life.
She had worked at a small financial consulting firm in San Francisco.
She had no connection to the Thorne family.
No reason to know Marcus.
No reason to know Victor.
Until one afternoon, she received an envelope.
There was no return address.
Inside was a photograph.
Her.
Walking home from work.
Another photograph.
Her entering a grocery store.
Another.
Her sitting alone at a café.
On the back of the final photograph were six words:
Stop looking into your mother's past.
Khloe had never understood why.
Until she opened the second envelope.
Inside was an old newspaper clipping.
The headline read:
THORNE EXECUTIVE DISAPPEARS AFTER FINANCIAL SCANDAL.
The executive was Victor Hale.
Khloe recognized the photograph immediately.
Because she had seen that face before.
In her mother's belongings.
Her mother had died when Khloe was twenty-four.
Before her death, she had left behind one instruction.
Never trust the Thorne family.
Khloe had always thought it was paranoia.
Until the photographs arrived.
Marcus listened without interrupting.
“You investigated Victor?”
Khloe nodded.
“Why?”
“Because I wanted to know why my mother was afraid of him.”
“What did you find?”
“Nothing at first.”
“And then?”
Khloe looked down.
“I found a name.”
“Whose?”
“Your grandfather's.”
Marcus's face changed.
“What did my grandfather have to do with your mother?”
Khloe shook her head.
“I don't know.”
“That's not true.”
“I don't know everything.”
Marcus stepped closer.
“What do you know?”
Khloe's eyes filled with tears.
“My mother worked for your grandfather.”
Marcus froze.
“What?”
“She wasn't a housekeeper.”
“What was she?”
“A financial analyst.”
Marcus stared.
His grandfather's private records had never mentioned her.
“How?”
“She discovered something.”
“What?”
Khloe hesitated.
Then whispered:
“Money.”
Victor interrupted.
“This is touching.”
Marcus turned.
“Shut up.”
Victor smiled.
“You should listen to her.”
Marcus ignored him.
He looked at Khloe.
“How much money?”
“Four hundred million dollars.”
Marcus's face went pale.
The same amount Victor had allegedly stolen.
The same amount his grandfather had accused Victor of taking.
But now another possibility appeared.
“What did your mother discover?”
Khloe shook her head.
“She believed the money had never been stolen.”
Marcus stared.
“Then where did it go?”
“She didn't know.”
“Khloe.”
“She thought it was transferred into a private trust.”
Marcus's breathing stopped.
“The Thorne Legacy Trust?”
Khloe nodded.
“I think so.”
Victor's smile disappeared.
For the first time, he looked genuinely concerned.
Marcus noticed.
“You knew.”
Victor said nothing.
“You knew.”
Victor finally answered.
“I knew your grandfather was a thief.”
Marcus stepped forward.
“And my wife's mother?”
Victor's eyes hardened.
“She got too close.”
Khloe's face went white.
“What does that mean?”
Victor looked at her.
“Your mother was told to disappear.”
Khloe's voice cracked.
“She didn't.”
“No.”
“She died.”
Victor remained silent.
Marcus looked at him.
“Did you kill her?”
“No.”
“Then who did?”
Victor smiled bitterly.
“Ask your family.”
Marcus felt as though the floor had shifted beneath him.
His family.
Again.
The same answer.
Every secret seemed to lead back to the Thorne name.
He turned toward Khloe.
“You knew this before we married.”
“Yes.”
“You knew my family might have been involved.”
“Yes.”
“And you still married me.”
Khloe began crying.
“I loved you.”
“That doesn't answer the question.”
“I wanted to tell you.”
“But you didn't.”
“I was afraid that if I told you, they'd come after you.”
Marcus stared at her.
“They were already watching you.”
“I know.”
“Who?”
“My father-in-law.”
Marcus froze.
“My father?”
“No.”
“Your grandfather?”
Khloe nodded.
“Your grandfather's security team followed me.”
Marcus looked at Daniel.
Daniel had gone silent.
“You knew?”
Daniel lowered his eyes.
Marcus's voice became cold.
“Daniel.”
“I didn't know the reason.”
“But you knew she was being followed.”
Daniel nodded.
“How long?”
“Before the wedding.”
Marcus stared at him.
“And you never told me.”
“I was ordered not to.”
“By whom?”
Daniel hesitated.
“Your father.”
Marcus stepped backward.
His father had been dead for six years.
Yet somehow, his secrets were still controlling their lives.
Marcus opened the old security database.
Daniel entered the archives.
Thousands of records appeared.
Marcus searched Khloe's name.
Nothing.
Then Daniel entered her maiden name.
Still nothing.
Then a code appeared.
SUBJECT 47.
Marcus clicked it.
The screen filled with photographs.
Khloe at twenty-seven.
Khloe at twenty-eight.
Khloe leaving work.
Khloe entering her apartment.
Khloe meeting friends.
Khloe crying outside a hospital.
Marcus stared.
His stomach turned.
“How long?”
Daniel looked at the timestamp.
“Three years.”
Marcus scrolled.
There were reports.
SUBJECT MAINTAINS CONTACT WITH MOTHER'S FORMER ASSOCIATES.
SUBJECT HAS ACCESSED ARCHIVED THORNE DOCUMENTS.
SUBJECT MAY HAVE DISCOVERED TRUST STRUCTURE.
Then the final report.
RECOMMENDATION: REMOVE SUBJECT FROM THORNE PROXIMITY BEFORE SHE MARRIES MARCUS.
Marcus stared at the sentence.
“Remove?”
Daniel whispered:
“That doesn't necessarily mean—”
Marcus interrupted.
“Don't.”
He clicked the next page.
If marriage occurs, subject should be monitored continuously.
Marcus looked at Khloe.
“You were never supposed to become my wife.”
Khloe nodded slowly.
“No.”
“Then what was supposed to happen?”
Her voice became barely audible.
“I was supposed to disappear.”
The words stayed in the room.
Marcus could barely breathe.
“You were supposed to disappear.”
“Yes.”
“Who decided that?”
“I don't know.”
“You must know something.”
Khloe wiped her tears.
“The night before I met you, someone came to my apartment.”
“Who?”
“A man.”
“Did you recognize him?”
“No.”
“What did he say?”
“He said I had two choices.”
Marcus waited.
“Leave San Francisco.”
“Or?”
“Marry you.”
Marcus stared.
“Why would marrying me protect you?”
“Because your grandfather had one rule.”
“What rule?”
Khloe looked directly at him.
“Anyone who married into the Thorne family became legally protected by the family trust.”
Marcus's eyes widened.
“That clause was removed years ago.”
“No.”
“What?”
“It wasn't.”
Khloe reached into her bag.
She removed a small envelope.
“I found this in my mother's belongings.”
Marcus opened it.
Inside was an old copy of the trust agreement.
A paragraph had been highlighted.
Any spouse of the primary heir shall be considered a protected beneficiary for the duration of the marriage.
Marcus read it twice.
Then looked at Daniel.
“Why isn't this in the current trust?”
Daniel's face had gone pale.
“Because someone removed it.”
“Who?”
Daniel didn't answer.
Marcus already knew.
“Adrian.”
Suddenly, the lights went out.
Khloe gasped.
Marcus immediately moved toward her.
“Stay behind me.”
A door slammed somewhere downstairs.
Then another.
Footsteps.
Multiple people.
Daniel reached for his weapon.
Marcus grabbed Khloe's hand.
“Stay close.”
The footsteps approached.
A security alarm began screaming.
Then the lights returned.
Three men stood at the doorway.
Marcus recognized one.
Adrian Thorne.
His uncle.
Adrian looked at Khloe.
Then at Marcus.
“You finally found it.”
Marcus's voice was cold.
“You've been watching her.”
Adrian smiled.
“For years.”
“Why?”
“Because she knew too much.”
Khloe stepped forward.
“You knew my mother.”
Adrian's expression changed.
“Yes.”
“What happened to her?”
“She was warned.”
“She was threatened.”
“She refused to listen.”
Khloe's voice shook.
“What did you do?”
Adrian didn't answer.
Marcus stepped between them.
“If you touched her—”
Adrian laughed.
“You still don't understand.”
He pointed toward Khloe.
“She wasn't supposed to survive long enough to become your wife.”
Marcus's blood ran cold.
“You tried to kill her?”
“No.”
Adrian smiled.
“We wanted her to leave.”
“Who is we?”
Adrian looked at Victor.
Victor had entered the room.
Marcus turned.
The pieces suddenly aligned.
Victor.
Adrian.
His father.
His grandfather.
Khloe's mother.
The trust.
The surveillance.
All of it.
A single network.
A single plan.
And Khloe had been at the center of it before Marcus ever knew her name.
Adrian pulled out his phone.
A video began playing.
Khloe's mother appeared on the screen.
Older.
Tired.
Terrified.
Marcus watched.
She sat inside an office.
A man's voice spoke from behind the camera.
“Sign the transfer.”
She shook her head.
“No.”
“You don't understand what you're protecting.”
“I understand exactly what you're protecting.”
“What?”
“The child.”
Marcus looked at Khloe.
Her face went white.
The recording continued.
Khloe's mother whispered:
“She will grow up.”
The man behind the camera said:
“Who?”
“My daughter.”
Marcus's heart stopped.
Her mother continued:
“One day, she will meet him.”
The man laughed.
“Who?”
“The heir.”
The recording ended.
Silence.
Marcus looked at Khloe.
“You knew.”
Khloe was crying.
“I didn't know what it meant.”
“You knew there was something about me.”
“Yes.”
“When did you realize?”
“The day we met.”
Marcus stared.
“You knew who I was?”
Khloe nodded.
“I recognized your name.”
“Then why did you pretend not to?”
“Because I wanted to know if you were like them.”
Marcus's face softened for a moment.
“Like who?”
“Your family.”
She took his hand.
“And you weren't.”
Adrian suddenly raised his weapon.
Daniel moved first.
He tackled him.
The gun fired.
The bullet struck the ceiling.
Everyone froze.
Then chaos erupted.
Marcus pulled Khloe behind him.
Victor disappeared through a side door.
Daniel struggled with Adrian.
Security officers rushed inside.
Adrian was finally restrained.
But before police arrived, he looked at Marcus.
“You think this ends here?”
Marcus stared at him.
“No.”
Adrian smiled.
“It doesn't.”
Then he whispered:
“Ask your wife what happened the night before your wedding.”
Marcus turned toward Khloe.
She had gone completely pale.
“Khloe?”
She didn't answer.
“What's he talking about?”
Tears rolled down her face.
“I wanted to tell you.”
“Tell me what?”
She reached into her bag.
This time, she pulled out a photograph.
An old photograph.
Marcus looked at it.
His grandfather stood beside Khloe's mother.
Between them was a little girl.
Khloe.
But that wasn't what shocked Marcus.
Written on the back were four words:
THE HEIR'S PROTECTED DAUGHTER.
Marcus stared.
“Khloe…”
She whispered:
“I'm not just your wife.”
“What does that mean?”
Her eyes met his.
“My mother believed I was connected to the trust before I ever met you.”
Marcus couldn't speak.
“And there's one more thing.”
“What?”
Khloe reached for another envelope.
“I've never opened this.”
“Why?”
“Because my mother told me not to.”
Marcus looked at the seal.
It carried the Thorne family crest.
His grandfather's signature was across the front.
Marcus slowly broke the seal.
Inside was a single letter.
The first sentence made his blood run cold.
Marcus, if you are reading this, then the woman you married was never an accident.
He looked at Khloe.
She was crying.
Outside, police sirens approached.
Inside, the entire history of the Thorne family was beginning to unravel.
And Marcus finally understood the cruelest part.
Khloe had not entered his life by chance.
His family had known about her long before he did.
They had watched her.
Tracked her.
Tried to make her disappear.
And somehow, despite everything they had done…
she had still married him.
But the letter in Marcus's hands contained one final secret.
A secret that could destroy Victor's claim to the Thorne empire.
And it began with a sentence written twenty-three years earlier:
Victor Hale was never the rightful heir.
May you like
Khloe's mother was.
