CHAPTER 8 — THE MAN BEHIND ISABELLA

CHAPTER 8 — THE MAN BEHIND ISABELLA
Marcus had spent the entire night believing Isabella was the enemy.
He was wrong.
She was only the hand.
Someone else had been moving the pieces.
Someone else had known about Khloe's pregnancy before Marcus had.
Someone else had accessed the medical records.
Someone else had prepared the nursery.
Someone else had manipulated Isabella.
And now, standing alone in a dark office overlooking the hospital, that man finally decided it was time for Marcus Thorne to know his name.
His name was Victor Hale.
And he believed the Thorne empire belonged to him.
Victor stood beside the window.
Below him, ambulances moved through the hospital entrance.
Security officers surrounded the building.
Reporters were already gathering outside.
On a large screen behind him was a live image of Marcus entering Khloe's hospital room.
Victor watched silently.
A man in a gray suit entered.
“She's alive.”
Victor didn't turn.
“I know.”
“The baby?”
“Still alive.”
The man hesitated.
“That complicates things.”
Victor finally looked at him.
“No.”
His expression was cold.
“It simplifies them.”
“How?”
Victor smiled.
“Now Marcus knows someone wants his family destroyed.”
“And?”
“He'll protect them.”
The man frowned.
“That's bad.”
Victor shook his head.
“It's exactly what I want.”
Inside the hospital, Marcus stood beside Khloe's bed.
She was unconscious.
Doctors had stabilized her.
The baby was alive.
But the next few hours were critical.
Marcus held her hand.
“I'm sorry.”
There was no response.
“I should have seen it.”
Nothing.
“I should have protected you.”
His voice cracked.
“But I promise you something.”
He leaned closer.
“No one will ever touch you again.”
Behind him, Daniel stood silently.
Marcus didn't look back.
“Tell me.”
Daniel knew what he meant.
“Isabella didn't act alone.”
“I know.”
“We traced the access records.”
“And?”
“Someone authorized her entry into the private wing.”
“Who?”
Daniel hesitated.
“Victor Hale.”
Marcus slowly turned.
The name meant nothing.
“Who is Victor Hale?”
Daniel placed a file on the table.
“That's the problem.”
Marcus opened it.
Inside were photographs.
Corporate records.
Old newspaper articles.
And one photograph that made him stop breathing.
Victor Hale standing beside Marcus's grandfather.
Twenty years younger.
Smiling.
Marcus stared.
“Why was he with my grandfather?”
Daniel answered quietly.
“Because Victor Hale used to be your grandfather's chief financial strategist.”
Marcus looked through the documents.
Then froze.
“He disappeared.”
“Twenty-three years ago.”
“Why?”
Daniel handed him another page.
“Your grandfather accused him of stealing company assets.”
Marcus frowned.
“How much?”
Daniel looked at him.
“Four hundred million dollars.”
Marcus stared.
“And he vanished?”
“Yes.”
“Then how is he back?”
“We don't know.”
Marcus looked at the photograph again.
“What happened to the money?”
Daniel's silence answered.
Marcus's expression hardened.
“He kept it.”
“We think so.”
“How much is it worth now?”
Daniel swallowed.
“Potentially several billion.”
Marcus slowly closed the file.
“So this man has spent twenty-three years waiting.”
“Yes.”
“For what?”
Daniel looked toward Khloe.
“For control.”
Victor Hale had not started with Isabella.
He had started years earlier.
Before Khloe.
Before Marcus.
Before the marriage.
Before anyone understood the significance of the trust.
He had spent years rebuilding his fortune.
Quietly.
Patiently.
Through shell companies.
Investment funds.
Offshore holdings.
Acquisitions.
And eventually, he began buying shares in companies connected to the Thorne empire.
Not enough to attract attention.
Never enough to trigger suspicion.
One percent.
Then two.
Then another three.
Until he had accumulated enough influence to begin making demands.
But there was one problem.
The Thorne Legacy Trust.
Fifty-one percent of Thorne Industries was protected.
No creditor could seize it.
No spouse could claim it.
No executive could transfer it.
No family member could sell it.
And the final beneficiary was the child of the Thorne bloodline.
Victor needed the child removed from the equation.
He couldn't kill the baby.
That would attract too much attention.
He couldn't steal the trust.
The legal protections were too strong.
So he needed something else.
He needed control.
And control began with Khloe.
Victor's first move had been medical.
A doctor here.
A falsified report there.
A manipulated laboratory result.
A suggestion that Khloe was emotionally unstable.
Then came Isabella.
She was perfect.
Beautiful.
Ambitious.
Desperate for Marcus's attention.
And easy to manipulate.
Victor had fed her exactly what she wanted to hear.
Marcus would leave Khloe.
Marcus would marry her.
She would become wealthy.
She would live inside the Thorne empire.
All she had to do was follow instructions.
Isabella had never realized that none of those promises mattered.
Victor didn't need her as Marcus's wife.
He needed her as a weapon.
At 4:18 a.m., Marcus walked into the police interview room.
Isabella was sitting there.
Her red dress was stained.
Her makeup had run.
For the first time, she looked small.
Marcus sat across from her.
“Where is he?”
She stared at him.
“Who?”
“Victor Hale.”
Her eyes widened.
“You know?”
“I know everything.”
“No.”
“You know what I saw on the footage.”
Her lips trembled.
“I didn't mean for her to get hurt.”
Marcus leaned forward.
“You attacked my pregnant wife.”
“I was told—”
“Who told you?”
Silence.
“Isabella.”
She looked down.
“Victor.”
Marcus's jaw tightened.
“What did he promise you?”
“A future.”
“With me?”
She nodded.
“And money?”
“Yes.”
“How much?”
“Enough.”
Marcus laughed bitterly.
“You destroyed your own life for money.”
Isabella looked at him.
“You don't understand.”
“Then explain.”
“He said you would never love Khloe.”
Marcus stared.
“He said she was temporary.”
“And you believed him?”
“I wanted to.”
The answer was so honest that Marcus almost felt sorry for her.
Almost.
Then he remembered Khloe on the floor.
“Why did you attack her?”
Isabella began crying.
“He told me if she gave birth, everything would be over.”
“What would be over?”
“His plan.”
Marcus leaned closer.
“What plan?”
Isabella looked toward the door.
“He wants the company.”
Marcus waited.
“He wants the trust.”
Marcus's eyes hardened.
“And the baby?”
She whispered:
“The baby is the only thing standing between him and everything.”
Meanwhile, Victor entered the Thorne family boardroom.
No one stopped him.
The guards recognized him.
The executives knew his name.
Some looked frightened.
Others looked confused.
Victor walked to the head of the table.
He placed a folder down.
Inside were stock certificates.
Contracts.
Acquisition agreements.
And a letter from the Thorne board.
A board member stood.
“You can't be here.”
Victor smiled.
“Actually, I can.”
“You were banned from company property.”
“That was twenty-three years ago.”
“You stole from this company.”
Victor's smile disappeared.
“I invested in this company.”
“You disappeared with hundreds of millions.”
“I protected it.”
“From what?”
Victor leaned forward.
“From your family.”
The room fell silent.
“You've spent two decades pretending the Thorne empire belongs to you.”
He looked around.
“It doesn't.”
One executive laughed nervously.
“And who does it belong to?”
Victor answered:
“Me.”
He opened the folder.
“I now control thirty-one percent of the voting shares outside the protected trust.”
The board members stared.
“That isn't possible.”
“It is.”
“You cannot control the company.”
Victor smiled.
“Not yet.”
He placed one final document on the table.
A merger agreement.
The room became silent.
“Once the trust is neutralized, I will hold the controlling interest.”
One executive whispered:
“And how do you intend to neutralize the trust?”
Victor looked toward the hospital on the other side of the city.
“By making sure its beneficiary never gains control.”
At 5:03 a.m., Marcus received a call.
He answered.
Daniel's voice was urgent.
“Sir.”
“What?”
“We found the nursery.”
Marcus froze.
“The one from before?”
“Yes.”
“Where?”
“An old Hale property.”
Marcus's eyes narrowed.
“Victor's?”
“Yes.”
“Is anyone there?”
“We found evidence someone was there recently.”
“Who?”
Daniel paused.
“There's something else.”
“What?”
“A camera recording.”
“Show me.”
Daniel sent the video.
Marcus opened it.
The footage showed Victor standing inside the nursery.
He was holding a photograph.
Khloe.
Marcus.
Their unborn child.
Victor looked at the camera.
And smiled.
Then he said:
“Tell Marcus I'm not interested in killing his child.”
Marcus stared.
Victor continued:
“I want him to grow up knowing the Thorne empire belongs to me.”
The video ended.
Marcus's blood ran cold.
Daniel called again.
“Sir?”
Marcus didn't answer.
“Sir?”
“Find him.”
“We're trying.”
“Find him before he reaches Khloe.”
At 5:40 a.m., the hospital lights flickered.
Security alarms activated.
Marcus immediately ran toward Khloe's room.
Two guards lay unconscious outside.
The door was open.
The monitors were still running.
Khloe was gone.
Marcus stopped.
For one second, the world disappeared.
Then he saw a piece of paper on the bed.
His name was written across it.
He opened it.
Marcus,
You wanted to know who I am.
Now you know.
Your grandfather built the empire.
Your father protected it.
You inherited it.
But your unborn son is the one thing that can take it away from me.
So I will give you a choice.
Come alone.
Bring the original trust documents.
Or Khloe disappears forever.
At the bottom was an address.
Marcus's hands tightened around the paper.
Daniel entered the room.
“Sir?”
Marcus looked at him.
“It's Victor.”
“What does he want?”
Marcus held up the note.
“Me.”
Daniel read it.
“And the trust.”
Marcus nodded.
“Do not call the police.”
Daniel stared.
“Sir—”
“If we move too quickly, he hurts her.”
“What are you going to do?”
Marcus looked toward the empty bed.
His voice became cold.
“I'm going to give him exactly what he thinks he wants.”
Across the city, Khloe slowly opened her eyes.
She was lying inside a dark room.
Her hands were not tied.
Her phone was gone.
The room smelled faintly of cedar.
She tried to sit up.
A sharp pain crossed her abdomen.
She froze.
Then she heard footsteps.
The door opened.
Victor Hale entered.
Khloe stared at him.
“You.”
He smiled.
“You remember me?”
“No.”
“You should.”
He sat across from her.
“Your mother did.”
Khloe's heart stopped.
“My mother?”
Victor nodded.
“She knew exactly what I was capable of.”
“Where is she?”
Victor's expression changed.
“That depends on how much you want to know.”
Khloe stared at him.
“Why did you take me?”
Victor leaned back.
“Because you're the only person Marcus would burn the world for.”
“And my son?”
Victor looked at her stomach.
“The boy is the future.”
“He's not yours.”
“No.”
Victor smiled.
“He belongs to the Thorne bloodline.”
Khloe's eyes hardened.
“And you want him.”
“I want what he controls.”
“You'll never get it.”
Victor laughed softly.
“You sound exactly like your mother.”
Khloe froze.
“What did you do to her?”
Victor stood.
“Nothing.”
He walked toward the door.
“But tomorrow, you may finally learn what she did to me.”
He stopped.
Then looked back.
“And why your grandfather spent twenty-three years trying to keep you away from me.”
The door closed.
Khloe stared into the darkness.
For the first time, she understood.
This wasn't just about Marcus.
It wasn't just about Isabella.
It wasn't even just about the Thorne empire.
Her own mother had been part of the story.
Her grandfather had hidden something.
Victor Hale had waited twenty-three years.
And her unborn child was the final piece.
Meanwhile, miles away, Marcus stood alone in his car with the original trust documents on the passenger seat.
He looked at the address.
Then at the photograph of Khloe.
He whispered:
“I'm coming.”
What Marcus didn't know was that Victor had prepared for him.
And when Marcus arrived, he would discover the most devastating secret of all.
Victor Hale wasn't the only person waiting inside that house.
Someone Marcus trusted was already there.
May you like
And that person had been working for Victor from the beginning.
