Chapter 1 – The Fall from the Balcony

Chapter 1 – The Fall from the Balcony

Nobody in that mansion expected the night to end with a woman falling from the balcony.

Nobody expected the unborn child she carried to become the center of a battle that had been brewing long before anyone realized it.

And nobody—least of all Adrian Blackwood—expected that the single decision he made in the next three seconds would change every life inside Blackwood Manor forever.

The scream echoed through the grand foyer.

Guests looked up instinctively.

Crystal chandeliers glittered above polished marble floors as hundreds of eyes followed the impossible sight unfolding overhead.

Claire Whitmore was falling.

Her dark blue coat billowed behind her like shattered wings.

One hand clutched desperately at the empty air.

The other never left her stomach.

Even as gravity pulled her toward the marble below...

Her first instinct wasn't to save herself.

It was to protect her baby.

Earlier that evening...

Claire had promised herself she wouldn't stay longer than ten minutes.

She repeated it in the car as she drove through the iron gates.

Ten minutes.

Collect the last box.

Sign the remaining paperwork.

Leave.

Never come back.

Blackwood Manor had once felt like the beginning of a dream.

Now it looked like a monument built from broken promises.

The limestone mansion stood beneath a gray November sky, its towering columns casting long shadows across the circular driveway.

Every window glowed warmly.

From the outside...

It looked like a home.

Claire knew better.

A servant opened the front door before she reached it.

"Miss Whitmore."

His voice carried genuine sympathy.

"You've returned."

"Only for my things, Daniel."

The elderly butler nodded.

"I'll have someone bring the boxes."

"No."

Claire forced a polite smile.

"I know where they are."

Daniel hesitated.

"Mrs. Eleanor Blackwood is still here."

Claire's smile disappeared.

"I won't be long."

The foyer was exactly as she remembered.

White marble.

Gold-framed portraits.

Fresh lilies arranged in crystal vases.

The scent of expensive perfume lingering in the air.

Everything looked perfect.

Nothing felt welcoming.

She climbed the sweeping staircase slowly, instinctively resting a hand against the gentle curve of her stomach.

Almost five months.

The tiny kick she felt made her smile for the first time that day.

"I know."

she whispered softly.

"We're almost done."

The nursery that had once been planned for guests now held her remaining belongings.

A single suitcase.

Two boxes of books.

One framed photograph she had forgotten.

Claire picked it up carefully.

The picture showed her standing beside Nathan Blackwood on their engagement day.

Both smiling.

Both believing forever existed.

She studied the image for several seconds.

Then quietly removed the photograph from the frame.

She folded it once.

Then again.

Dropped it into the trash.

Some memories didn't deserve to be carried into the future.

She lifted the first box.

It was heavier than she expected.

Books.

Medical journals.

Baby clothes she had secretly begun collecting.

A tiny knitted pair of yellow socks rested on top.

Claire smiled.

"You'll wear these someday."

A voice behind her froze the moment.

"So..."

"You decided to keep it."

Claire closed her eyes.

She knew that voice.

Slowly...

She turned.

Eleanor Blackwood stood in the doorway.

Elegant as always.

Silver hair perfectly arranged.

A cream-colored silk dress.

Pearl earrings.

To anyone else...

She looked like the picture of dignity.

Claire knew what lived beneath that mask.

"I didn't come to argue."

Claire said quietly.

"I'm taking my things."

"And leaving."

Eleanor stepped into the room.

"The child changes everything."

Claire instinctively wrapped one arm around her stomach.

"The child changes nothing."

"It changes the inheritance."

Claire's heartbeat quickened.

"There it is."

"The real reason."

Eleanor's eyes hardened.

"You should have listened."

"When?"

"When you offered me money?"

"When you told me to disappear?"

"When you called my baby..."

She stopped herself.

Even now...

The words hurt.

Eleanor folded her hands.

"I offered you an easy life."

"You offered me silence."

"I offered you protection."

"You offered me betrayal."

For a brief moment...

Neither woman spoke.

The room felt strangely small despite its high ceilings.

Outside...

Rain tapped softly against the windows.

Claire lifted her suitcase.

"I'm leaving now."

She walked toward the hallway.

Eleanor didn't move.

Until Claire passed.

Then...

Quietly...

She followed.

The upper balcony overlooked the grand foyer below.

Guests gathered for the annual Blackwood Foundation gala filled the marble entrance.

Champagne glasses sparkled beneath the chandeliers.

A string quartet played softly near the staircase.

No one looked up.

Not yet.

Claire walked toward the stairs.

She heard Eleanor's heels behind her.

Slow.

Measured.

Deliberate.

Then...

Eleanor spoke.

"If that baby is born..."

"...everything my husband built will belong to you."

Claire stopped.

Without turning around...

She answered.

"It will belong to the person Nathan wanted."

"You don't know what Nathan wanted."

"I know he loved this child."

Something changed in Eleanor's face.

Not anger.

Something colder.

More dangerous.

The careful restraint she'd worn for months finally disappeared.

"You should have taken the money."

Claire finally turned.

"And you should have loved your grandchild."

For one endless heartbeat...

Silence.

Then...

Eleanor raised both hands.

Claire barely had time to react.

A violent shove slammed into her shoulders.

She stumbled backward.

Her lower back struck the stone railing.

The old iron balustrade groaned.

Cracked.

Then broke.

The world disappeared beneath her feet.

Claire's body tipped into empty space.

The ceiling spun.

The chandelier blurred into thousands of dancing lights.

Someone screamed.

She didn't know if it was her.

Instinct took over.

Both arms wrapped tightly around her stomach.

Protect the baby.

Nothing else mattered.

Below...

Champagne glasses crashed against marble.

Guests scattered in every direction.

A violinist dropped his instrument.

One woman fainted.

Daniel, the butler, looked up just in time to see Claire falling.

"No!"

Across the foyer...

The front doors burst open.

A tall man in a charcoal overcoat stepped inside.

Adrian Blackwood.

He had landed from London less than an hour earlier.

Still carrying his travel bag.

Still unaware of the chaos waiting inside his family home.

He heard the scream before he saw the crowd.

Then...

He looked up.

Time seemed to stop.

A pregnant woman was falling from the second-floor balcony.

There wasn't time to think.

Only to move.

His suitcase hit the marble.

He sprinted forward.

Guests shouted at him to get back.

Someone yelled that it was impossible.

He ignored every voice.

Claire saw the floor rushing toward her.

She closed her eyes.

Not out of fear.

Out of prayer.

Please...

Let my baby live.

Adrian pushed through the crowd.

He calculated the angle instinctively.

Years earlier...

Before business school.

Before boardrooms.

Before becoming Blackwood Industries' international director...

He had trained in competitive gymnastics.

His body remembered movements his mind had forgotten.

One leap.

Another.

He launched himself toward the exact place Claire would land.

The impact stole the air from his lungs.

Claire crashed into his outstretched arms with tremendous force.

Momentum carried them both backward.

They slammed hard against the polished marble floor.

Adrian twisted instinctively, shielding Claire beneath him.

His shoulder struck first.

Then his back.

Pain exploded through his body.

But Claire's head never touched the floor.

Neither did her stomach.

The foyer fell completely silent.

For several seconds...

No one moved.

No one breathed.

Then...

Claire opened her eyes.

She was alive.

Her hands immediately searched her stomach.

Tears flooded her face.

The baby kicked.

A tiny movement.

Gentle.

Alive.

Adrian winced as he tried to sit up.

"You okay?"

Claire stared at him, unable to speak.

He repeated softly,

"Is the baby okay?"

She nodded through tears.

"I... I think so."

Above them...

A single voice shattered the silence.

"It was an accident!"

Every head turned upward.

Eleanor still stood on the broken balcony.

Her hands trembled.

Her face had gone pale.

"It was an accident!"

But no one answered.

Because standing halfway up the staircase...

Holding a silver serving tray he'd forgotten to put down...

Was sixteen-year-old Lucas, one of the junior footmen.

His face was white with shock.

His voice barely rose above a whisper.

"I saw her."

The room froze.

Lucas swallowed hard.

Then pointed directly at Eleanor.

"She..."

"...she pushed Miss Claire."

The words landed like thunder.

Across the silent foyer, Adrian slowly lifted his eyes to meet Eleanor's.

For the first time in his life...

He looked at the woman who had raised him...

And saw not a grieving grandmother.

Not the respected matriarch of the Blackwood family.

But the woman who had just tried to kill a pregnant mother.

And somewhere outside the mansion...

May you like

The distant sound of approaching police sirens began to echo through the rain.
