Chapter 9 – The Family Turns Against Eleanor

Chapter 9 – The Family Turns Against Eleanor
The words echoed through the holding cell long after the visitor closed the door.
"I thought you were dead."
"So did everyone else."
Outside, the security camera captured only the back of the man's dark coat as he entered.
His face remained hidden beneath the brim of a black felt hat.
The prison guard watched from the hallway.
He noticed one unusual detail.
Eleanor Blackwood...
The woman who had remained perfectly composed through police questioning, search warrants, and accusations of attempted murder...
Was trembling.
"What are you doing here?"
Eleanor asked quietly.
The man removed his gloves one finger at a time.
"You always said ghosts belonged in the past."
"I buried the past."
"No."
He smiled faintly.
"You buried people."
Silence.
The guard shifted uneasily outside the door.
He couldn't hear every word.
Only fragments.
Enough to know the conversation wasn't ordinary.
Inside...
The man placed an old silver pocket watch on the table.
Eleanor's face turned white.
"You kept it."
"I kept everything."
Her breathing became shallow.
"How did you survive?"
"You should've asked that question thirty years ago."
Before she could respond...
The visitor stood.
"I didn't come to threaten you."
"I came to warn you."
"About what?"
"They're reopening every file."
He leaned closer.
"And this time..."
"...I'm not protecting you."
Without another word, he walked away.
Leaving Eleanor alone.
For the first time in decades...
She looked afraid.
Across town...
Officer Brooks inserted Walter Briggs' flash drive into the evidence computer.
Adrian stood beside her.
Claire remained seated, one hand protectively over her stomach.
Detective Ortiz dimmed the lights.
The screen flickered.
Dashboard camera footage appeared.
Timestamp:
Three Months Earlier
Walter's sedan rolled quietly along Harbor Road.
Nathan sat in the back seat, speaking on his phone.
His voice was clear.
"I know."
"No, I'm not changing my mind."
Claire immediately recognized the conversation.
He was speaking to his attorney.
"I'll sign everything tomorrow morning."
Nathan continued.
"If anything happens to me before then..."
The sentence was interrupted.
His phone buzzed.
Caller ID:
Grandmother
Nathan sighed before answering.
"What now?"
The room fell silent as Eleanor's voice came through the speakers.
Even through compressed audio...
It sounded cold.
"You've made a mistake."
"No."
Nathan replied.
"I'm protecting my family."
"You are destroying this family."
"The baby is family."
"No."
Eleanor answered quietly.
"It is an obstacle."
Claire covered her mouth.
Tears filled her eyes.
The argument continued for nearly three minutes.
Then Nathan looked toward Walter.
"Pull over."
The car stopped.
Nathan stepped onto the empty roadside.
The dashboard camera continued recording.
Walter watched through the windshield.
Nathan began walking.
Exactly as Walter had described.
Then...
Headlights appeared.
A black SUV.
It turned slowly onto Harbor Road.
Following Nathan.
Officer Brooks paused the footage.
"Enhance."
The technician zoomed in.
The license plate had been removed.
But another detail became visible.
A small silver emblem on the driver's side mirror.
The Blackwood Industries executive fleet crest.
Adrian stared at the image.
"Those vehicles aren't sold publicly."
"Who had access?"
Ortiz asked.
Adrian answered quietly.
"Only six people."
The footage resumed.
The SUV accelerated.
Nathan turned.
Its headlights blinded him.
The camera captured only seconds of chaos.
Brakes screamed.
Metal twisted.
A violent impact.
Then...
Flames.
Claire burst into tears.
Adrian looked away.
He couldn't watch anymore.
Officer Brooks stopped the recording.
"No question."
"This wasn't an accident."
A forensic technician entered hurriedly.
"We identified the vehicle."
"Already?"
"The fleet maintenance logs."
He handed Ortiz a printed report.
"The SUV assigned to..."
He hesitated.
"...Eleanor Blackwood."
The room became completely silent.
Just then...
Adrian's phone rang.
Caller ID:
Richard Caldwell
His uncle.
Nathan's father.
Adrian answered.
"Uncle Richard?"
The voice on the other end sounded exhausted.
"I've seen the news."
There was a long pause.
"I need to tell the truth."
Two hours later...
Richard Caldwell arrived at the police station.
His hair had turned almost completely gray since Nathan's funeral.
His eyes carried the weight of months without sleep.
Claire stood slowly as he entered.
He embraced her without speaking.
Then...
He rested one hand gently against her stomach.
"I'm sorry."
His voice broke.
"I failed both of you."
Officer Brooks led everyone into the interview room.
Richard didn't wait for questions.
"I lied."
Silence.
"After Nathan died..."
"My mother told me the crash was an accident."
"I believed her."
He swallowed hard.
"Or perhaps..."
"I wanted to."
"What changed?"
Brooks asked.
Richard removed a thick envelope from his briefcase.
"I found these yesterday."
Inside...
Original board meeting minutes.
Corporate voting records.
Private letters.
One document immediately caught Adrian's attention.
A resignation letter.
Signed by his father.
Dated twenty years earlier.
"My father resigned?"
Adrian whispered.
Richard nodded.
"He didn't die of a heart attack."
Adrian looked up sharply.
"What?"
Richard closed his eyes.
"He discovered financial fraud."
"He wanted to report it."
"And?"
"Our mother convinced everyone he was unstable."
"He resigned."
"Three months later..."
Richard's voice cracked.
"He was dead."
The room fell silent once more.
"I spent twenty years believing my brother abandoned us."
Richard whispered.
"He didn't."
"He tried to stop her."
Claire suddenly remembered Walter's final words.
Trust your father.
She looked at Richard.
"My father died when I was sixteen."
Richard stared at her strangely.
"Claire..."
"Who told you that?"
"My mother."
Richard slowly shook his head.
"No."
"He disappeared."
"He never died."
Claire's face drained of color.
"What are you saying?"
"I'm saying..."
Richard took a deep breath.
"...someone wanted you to believe he was dead."
Before anyone could respond...
Officer Brooks' phone rang.
She answered immediately.
"What?"
Her expression changed.
"When?"
She looked toward Adrian.
"The visitor who met Eleanor..."
"He has been identified."
"Who is he?"
Ortiz asked.
Brooks slowly lowered the phone.
"You won't believe this."
She looked directly at Adrian.
"It was your father."
Silence.
Absolute silence.
The man Adrian had mourned since he was eighteen.
The man whose funeral he had attended.
The man whose grave he had visited every year.
Alive.
Adrian whispered,
"That's impossible."
Officer Brooks handed him the surveillance still.
The image wasn't perfect.
But the face was unmistakable.
Older.
Thinner.
Scarred.
Yet undeniably...
James Blackwood.
Richard slowly closed his eyes.
"I always hoped."
He whispered.
"I just never dared believe."
Across the city...
News of the investigation spread quickly.
Board members of Blackwood Industries began arriving at an emergency meeting.
Some had remained loyal to Eleanor for decades.
Others had feared her.
Now...
For the first time...
They questioned everything.
The chairman stood.
"I move for an immediate suspension of Eleanor Blackwood from all executive authority."
One by one...
Hands rose.
Not reluctantly.
Not cautiously.
Unanimously.
The woman who had ruled the family for thirty years...
Had just lost the empire she had spent a lifetime controlling.
Back at the detention center...
A guard unlocked Eleanor's cell.
"You have another visitor."
She looked up impatiently.
"I've already had one."
"This one is different."
"Who?"
The guard hesitated.
"A little girl."
Eleanor frowned.
"A child?"
"No."
The guard corrected softly.
"She's about to become the most important heir in the Blackwood family."
Claire, supported by Adrian and Officer Brooks, stepped into the visitation room.
She placed one hand over her unborn baby.
Looked Eleanor directly in the eyes.
And said the words Eleanor had feared for months.
"You tried to erase my child."
"But every lie you've ever told..."
"...has only made this child stronger."
Eleanor didn't answer.
For the first time in anyone's memory...
The woman who always had the last word...
May you like
Had none.
