Chapter 5 – A Mansion Built on Lies

Chapter 5 – A Mansion Built on Lies

The rain hadn't stopped.

It washed over the towering windows of Blackwood Manor like it was trying to erase the past.

Inside...

The mansion remained as elegant as ever.

Fresh flowers stood in crystal vases.

Silver candlesticks gleamed beneath the chandeliers.

Portraits of generations of Blackwoods watched silently from the walls.

To outsiders...

It looked like the home of a family blessed with wealth, tradition, and respect.

To Adrian...

It suddenly looked like a stage.

Every smile.

Every celebration.

Every photograph.

He wondered how much of it had been real.

The library was unusually quiet.

Detective Samuel Ortiz stood beside the fireplace, flipping through a stack of financial records officers had collected under a search warrant.

Officer Brooks examined family photographs lining the shelves.

Daniel, the elderly butler, waited silently near the doorway.

Only Eleanor remained composed.

She sat in a leather chair with perfect posture, reading a book as though police officers searching her home were nothing more than an inconvenience.

Adrian couldn't understand it.

How could someone remain so calm?

Unless...

She had spent years practicing.

"Mrs. Blackwood."

Officer Brooks finally broke the silence.

"We'll need access to your personal office."

Eleanor closed her book.

"You already have a warrant."

"We do."

"Then why ask?"

Brooks held her gaze.

"Because I'm curious whether you'll cooperate."

A faint smile crossed Eleanor's lips.

"You'll search regardless."

"Yes."

"Then save your curiosity."

Adrian watched the exchange carefully.

For the first time in his life...

He noticed something he had ignored as a child.

His grandmother never answered questions.

She redirected them.

Controlled them.

Forced everyone else to react while revealing almost nothing herself.

It was the same strategy she'd used at board meetings.

At family dinners.

At funerals.

Even at birthdays.

He suddenly realized...

She had always controlled every room she entered.

Daniel quietly approached Adrian.

"May I speak with you, sir?"

Adrian nodded.

The old butler led him into a small sitting room overlooking the gardens.

Once the door closed...

Daniel exhaled heavily.

"I've worked here forty-three years."

"I know."

"I've buried more secrets than I care to remember."

Adrian frowned.

"What do you mean?"

Daniel looked toward the window.

"I should have spoken sooner."

The words hung heavily between them.

"When your father died..."

Daniel began softly,

"Everyone believed it was a heart attack."

Adrian's chest tightened.

"It wasn't?"

Daniel hesitated.

"I don't know."

"But I know he and Mrs. Blackwood argued the night before."

"About what?"

"The company."

"And you."

Adrian stared at him.

"Me?"

Daniel nodded.

"Your father wanted you to become chairman someday."

"And Grandmother?"

"She wanted Nathan."

Silence filled the room.

Nathan.

His younger cousin.

The grandson Eleanor had always favored.

The grandson who had died three months earlier.

"I never understood why."

Daniel admitted.

"Until Claire became pregnant."

Adrian slowly pieced the puzzle together.

"If Nathan had no children..."

"The inheritance stayed under Eleanor's control."

Daniel nodded.

"But if Claire's baby survived..."

"The child inherited Nathan's share."

"And Eleanor lost everything."

Adrian felt sick.

Could it really be that simple?

Could decades of manipulation have been driven by money?

Or was there something even deeper?

Upstairs...

Detective Ortiz entered Eleanor's private office.

Everything was immaculate.

Neatly organized files.

Matching leather binders.

An antique mahogany desk.

Nothing appeared suspicious.

Too perfect.

Almost...

Prepared.

"She cleaned this room."

Officer Brooks muttered.

Ortiz agreed.

"Before we arrived."

He opened desk drawers one by one.

Nothing.

Tax records.

Charity donations.

Board minutes.

Perfectly legal.

Perfectly ordinary.

Almost deliberately ordinary.

Then...

Officer Brooks noticed something strange.

One bookshelf looked newer than the others.

The wood stain was slightly darker.

She ran her fingers along the edge.

A tiny click echoed.

The bookshelf shifted.

Behind it...

A hidden room.

Neither officer spoke.

They simply stared.

Shelves lined every wall.

Boxes.

Locked cabinets.

Old photo albums.

Stacks of documents dating back decades.

Eleanor appeared behind them unexpectedly.

"You found it."

Her voice carried neither surprise nor panic.

Only resignation.

"What is this room?"

Brooks asked.

"My husband's archive."

"Were you going to mention it?"

"You didn't ask."

Detective Ortiz opened the first cabinet.

Inside...

Dozens of folders.

Each labeled with a family member's name.

Adrian.

Nathan.

Richard.

Margaret.

Business partners.

Employees.

Even servants.

Officer Brooks pulled one at random.

Daniel Collins.

The butler.

Inside were handwritten notes.

Medical records.

Bank statements.

Photographs.

Performance reviews stretching back twenty years.

Daniel's face turned pale.

"She's been keeping files..."

"...on all of us."

Adrian found another folder.

His own.

He opened it slowly.

The first page read:

Subject: Adrian James Blackwood

Below...

Hundreds of observations.

Daily schedules.

Friends.

Relationships.

Business trips.

Personal habits.

One entry stopped him cold.

Age 19

"Shows increasing independence. Difficult to influence. Recommend overseas expansion after graduation."

His breathing slowed.

She hadn't suggested London because it was good for his career.

She had exiled him.

Claire's folder sat nearby.

Officer Brooks opened it carefully.

The first pages contained newspaper articles.

University transcripts.

Employment history.

Then...

Ultrasound appointment dates.

Doctor's addresses.

Copies of private medical insurance forms.

Claire's hands began trembling.

"She..."

"She followed me."

The detective turned another page.

Several photographs fell onto the floor.

Claire leaving her apartment.

Claire grocery shopping.

Claire entering prenatal appointments.

None of the pictures had been taken with permission.

Someone had been watching her for months.

Adrian's jaw tightened.

"This wasn't family."

"It was surveillance."

Officer Brooks continued searching.

Another folder caught her attention.

It was thicker than all the others.

Its label simply read:

Incidents.

She opened it.

Inside...

Newspaper clippings.

Insurance claims.

Accident reports.

Hospital records.

Some dated back nearly thirty years.

The first headline read:

BOARD MEMBER DIES IN BOATING ACCIDENT

The second:

FORMER EXECUTIVE KILLED IN HOUSE FIRE

The third:

HEIR DECLINES COMPANY POSITION, MOVES ABROAD

Each clipping carried handwritten notes in Eleanor's elegant script.

Problem resolved.

Risk eliminated.

No further action required.

Officer Brooks slowly lowered the folder.

"This..."

"...isn't coincidence anymore."

Even Detective Ortiz looked unsettled.

"These aren't keepsakes."

"They're trophies."

Adrian couldn't breathe.

Every "accident."

Every unexpected resignation.

Every sudden disappearance.

Had his grandmother orchestrated them?

Or merely benefited from them?

The question terrified him.

Because he no longer knew which answer was worse.

Just then...

Daniel quietly spoke from behind them.

"There was another child."

Everyone turned.

"What?"

Daniel looked toward an old family portrait hanging nearby.

"Before Nathan."

Silence.

"There was a baby girl."

Adrian frowned.

"I never knew Father had a sister."

"He didn't."

Daniel whispered.

"She was your grandfather's first granddaughter."

"What happened?"

Daniel closed his eyes.

"They said she died from pneumonia."

His voice cracked.

"But I remember..."

"I remember Mrs. Blackwood burning every photograph of her."

Officer Brooks looked at Eleanor.

"Who was the little girl?"

Eleanor remained silent.

For the first time...

The confidence in her eyes faltered.

Only for a second.

But Adrian saw it.

Fear.

Real fear.

Before anyone could ask another question...

A detective rushed into the room.

"Sir!"

Ortiz turned.

"What is it?"

"We found Michael Harris."

"The security technician?"

"Yes."

"Where?"

The detective hesitated.

"His truck was abandoned near Interstate 95."

"And Michael?"

Another pause.

Then quietly...

"He's gone."

"Gone?"

"There was blood inside the vehicle."

"But no body."

The room fell completely silent.

Someone had reached Michael before the police.

Someone who couldn't afford to let him talk.

Officer Brooks slowly closed the folder marked Incidents.

Then looked directly at Eleanor.

"You've spent years making people disappear."

Eleanor met her gaze without blinking.

"You'd better hope..."

she said softly,

"...you can prove that."

Outside...

Thunder rolled across the Connecticut sky.

Inside Blackwood Manor...

The walls that had protected generations of lies were finally beginning to crack.

But the mansion wasn't giving up its secrets without a fight.

And somewhere in the darkness...

Michael Harris was still alive.

May you like

Or someone desperately wanted the police to believe he wasn't.
