Chapter 4 – The Security Camera That Never Lied

Chapter 4 – The Security Camera That Never Lied
The hospital no longer felt like a place of healing.
It felt like a fortress.
A uniformed police officer stood outside Claire's room twenty-four hours a day.
Every visitor signed in.
Every hallway camera was monitored.
After Eleanor's unexpected appearance—and the nurse's disturbing testimony—Officer Megan Brooks wasn't taking chances.
If someone had tried to kill Claire once...
They might try again.
Claire stood beside the window, watching gray clouds gather over Greenwich.
One hand rested protectively on her stomach.
The baby moved gently beneath her palm.
A quiet reminder that she had something worth surviving for.
A soft knock interrupted her thoughts.
"Come in."
Adrian stepped inside.
His sling remained wrapped around his shoulder, but he looked stronger than the day before.
In his hand was a laptop.
"I think I found something."
Claire looked at him carefully.
"What is it?"
"The security cameras."
Officer Brooks looked up immediately.
"I thought the police already requested the footage."
"We did."
Adrian replied.
"But something doesn't make sense."
He placed the laptop on the bedside table.
"Blackwood Manor has thirty-eight security cameras."
Claire frowned.
"I've seen them."
"My grandmother insisted on installing them years ago."
He opened a digital floor plan of the mansion.
"Every entrance."
"Every hallway."
"The driveway."
"The gardens."
"The foyer."
He pointed toward the second floor.
"And..."
"The east balcony."
Claire's heart skipped a beat.
"The balcony?"
Adrian nodded.
"There was a camera facing the exact spot where you fell."
Silence filled the room.
Officer Brooks slowly stood.
"Then we have the assault on video."
"We should."
Adrian corrected quietly.
Forty-five minutes later...
Officer Brooks, Adrian, and Detective Samuel Ortiz arrived at Blackwood Manor.
Yellow police tape still surrounded the broken balcony.
The gala decorations had been removed.
The mansion felt strangely empty.
Daniel greeted them at the entrance.
"They're waiting in the library."
Eleanor sat beside her attorney.
Impeccably dressed.
Perfect posture.
As though yesterday had never happened.
She smiled politely.
"Detective."
Officer Brooks ignored the greeting.
"We're here for the surveillance recordings."
Eleanor folded her hands.
"Of course."
"I've already instructed our security director to cooperate."
The mansion's security office occupied a small room beneath the west wing.
Rows of monitors displayed every corner of the estate.
Security director Thomas Reeves looked nervous.
"Here's yesterday's archive."
He inserted a hard drive into the computer.
The footage began playing.
Driveway.
Kitchen.
Ballroom.
Garden.
Everything appeared normal.
Until...
The screen labeled Second Floor East Balcony appeared.
Static.
Nothing but gray interference.
Officer Brooks frowned.
"What happened?"
Thomas swallowed.
"I... I don't know."
Adrian stepped closer.
"What time does the interference begin?"
Thomas checked the timeline.
"6:42 p.m."
"What time did Claire fall?"
"6:44."
The detective looked directly at Thomas.
"So the only camera covering the crime scene failed..."
"...exactly two minutes before the assault."
Thomas couldn't answer.
Officer Brooks crossed her arms.
"When was the last maintenance check?"
"Last week."
"Any problems?"
"No."
"Any outages?"
"No."
The room grew very quiet.
Adrian stared at the monitor.
Then something caught his attention.
"Go back."
Thomas rewound the footage.
"There."
Adrian pointed.
"The hallway camera."
Everyone watched carefully.
At 6:41...
Eleanor walked toward the east balcony.
At 6:42...
She disappeared around the corner.
Exactly one second later...
The balcony camera went black.
Detective Ortiz leaned closer.
"Freeze that."
He enlarged the image.
A shadow appeared behind Eleanor.
Not another person.
A reflection.
Someone reaching toward the wall.
Officer Brooks frowned.
"Can you enhance it?"
Thomas tried.
The picture sharpened.
Barely.
Just enough to reveal a hand.
A man's hand.
Pulling open the maintenance panel beside the camera controls.
"Who has access to that panel?"
Officer Brooks asked.
Thomas answered immediately.
"Only security staff."
"And?"
"...Mrs. Blackwood."
The detective turned slowly toward Eleanor.
She remained perfectly calm.
"Interesting."
she said.
"But that proves nothing."
"It proves someone disabled the camera."
Officer Brooks replied.
"It doesn't prove I did."
Eleanor smiled.
"I wasn't near the control panel."
"No."
Adrian answered quietly.
"But someone working for you might have been."
Thomas suddenly looked pale.
"There was..."
He stopped.
"What?"
Officer Brooks demanded.
"There was one maintenance request yesterday."
"Who filed it?"
Thomas hesitated.
"...Mrs. Blackwood."
Silence.
"What kind of maintenance?"
Thomas opened the digital log.
"'Temporary camera recalibration.'"
Officer Brooks frowned.
"Who performed it?"
Thomas looked even more uncomfortable.
"I did."
Detective Ortiz stepped closer.
"Tell me exactly what happened."
Thomas wiped sweat from his forehead.
"Mrs. Blackwood told me the balcony camera had been flickering."
"So I shut it down for diagnostics."
"What time?"
"6:42."
"When did she ask?"
"...6:40."
Officer Brooks' eyes narrowed.
"So two minutes before Claire was pushed..."
"...the only camera capable of recording the assault was intentionally disabled."
Thomas whispered,
"Yes."
Eleanor finally spoke.
"I requested maintenance."
"That's hardly a crime."
"No."
Officer Brooks agreed.
"But timing matters."
Before anyone could continue...
Adrian noticed something strange.
"The hallway camera."
"What about it?"
"It isn't synchronized."
Everyone looked again.
The hallway timestamp read 6:41:18.
The ballroom camera read 6:40:51.
A twenty-seven second difference.
Detective Ortiz frowned.
"Why are the clocks different?"
Thomas looked confused.
"They shouldn't be."
Adrian's years in corporate investigations suddenly took over.
"Show me the raw server."
Thomas opened the system logs.
Thousands of lines of data scrolled across the screen.
Adrian read silently.
Then...
His expression changed.
"No."
Officer Brooks stepped closer.
"What?"
He pointed to one line.
Manual timestamp adjustment – Authorized User E.B.
Time adjustment: -27 seconds.
Executed at 6:39 p.m.
The room fell silent.
Officer Brooks looked directly at Eleanor.
"You changed the security clock."
Eleanor didn't answer.
Instead...
Her attorney finally spoke.
"My client has every legal right to manage her own security system."
"Perhaps."
The detective replied.
"But not to manipulate evidence."
Thomas suddenly remembered something.
"There may be another recording."
Every head turned.
"What?"
"The elevator."
He hurried to another monitor.
Unlike the balcony camera...
The elevator surveillance recorded continuously onto an independent backup server.
No manual override.
No timestamp editing.
No interruptions.
Thomas pressed play.
The elevator doors opened at 6:41 p.m.
Eleanor stepped out.
She walked toward the east hallway.
Exactly twelve seconds later...
A man in a security uniform emerged from a side corridor.
He looked around nervously.
Then opened the maintenance panel beside the balcony camera.
Within seconds...
The feed disappeared.
Officer Brooks paused the video.
"Who is he?"
Thomas stared at the screen.
His face turned white.
"Michael."
"Our night technician."
"Where is Michael now?"
Thomas checked the employee schedule.
"He..."
His fingers froze over the keyboard.
"He never came back after the gala."
Detective Ortiz immediately grabbed his phone.
"Dispatch."
"I need an APB."
"Security technician Michael Harris."
"Possible witness."
"Possible accomplice."
Across town...
A black pickup truck sped toward Interstate 95.
Michael Harris gripped the steering wheel so tightly his knuckles turned white.
His phone rang.
The caller ID displayed only one word.
Private.
He answered.
"They know."
A woman's calm voice responded.
"Then don't let them question you."
Michael's breathing quickened.
"I didn't push her."
"No."
the voice said coldly.
"But you erased the camera."
The line went silent for a moment.
Then came six chilling words.
"You know what happens to witnesses."
The call ended.
Michael looked into his rearview mirror.
Blue lights flashed in the distance.
Police.
He slammed his foot on the accelerator.
Back at Blackwood Manor...
Officer Brooks turned off the monitor.
She looked at Adrian.
"You were right."
"The camera never lied."
"It simply wasn't allowed to tell the truth."
Adrian looked toward the broken balcony above.
Somewhere inside that mansion...
Someone had spent years controlling every story.
Every secret.
Every person.
But now...
The lies were beginning to crack.
And somewhere on a rain-soaked highway...
The man who had helped hide the truth was running for his life.
He didn't realize...
May you like
He wasn't the only one being hunted.
