Chapter 6 – The Child They Feared

Chapter 6 – The Child They Feared
The blood inside Michael Harris's abandoned truck had barely dried when the investigation took a darker turn.
For Detective Samuel Ortiz...
It confirmed one thing.
Someone wasn't merely covering up a crime.
Someone was eliminating loose ends.
Blackwood Manor had become an active crime scene.
Police officers moved through every hallway.
Forensic photographers documented the hidden archive.
Boxes of files disappeared into evidence vans.
Reporters crowded behind the iron gates, shouting questions no one inside was prepared to answer.
Only one person wasn't there.
Claire.
From the maternity wing at Greenwich Memorial Hospital, she watched the news on a muted television.
The headlines flashed across the screen.
BLACKWOOD MATRIARCH UNDER INVESTIGATION
PREGNANT WOMAN SURVIVES FALL
HEIR RETURNS TO FAMILY SCANDAL
Claire switched the television off.
None of it mattered.
Not if her baby wasn't safe.
Dr. Helen Carter entered the room carrying the latest ultrasound report.
"Good news."
Claire immediately looked up.
"The baby's heartbeat is strong."
She released a breath she hadn't realized she was holding.
"And the bruising?"
"It's healing."
"But I want you to avoid stress."
Claire almost laughed.
Stress had become her entire life.
A soft knock interrupted them.
Officer Brooks stepped inside.
She wasn't alone.
Adrian followed quietly behind her.
His shoulder remained in a sling, but the color had returned to his face.
Dr. Carter excused herself, leaving the three of them alone.
Officer Brooks placed a thick envelope on the bedside table.
"We've identified why Eleanor wanted your baby gone."
Claire looked confused.
"I thought we already knew."
"We knew about the inheritance."
Brooks nodded.
"But that wasn't the whole story."
She opened the envelope.
Inside were copies of legal documents.
Old wills.
Trust agreements.
Family records dating back decades.
Adrian sat beside Claire.
"I read them this morning."
His voice sounded strangely distant.
"I wish I hadn't."
Officer Brooks slid one document toward Claire.
"This was your fiancé Nathan's original trust."
Claire recognized the signature immediately.
Nathan's.
Below it sat another signature.
Richard Blackwood.
Nathan's father.
"The trust states that Nathan's biological children become primary beneficiaries upon his death."
Claire nodded slowly.
"That's normal."
"It is."
Brooks agreed.
"Now read the next page."
Claire turned it over.
Halfway down...
Her breath caught.
In the absence of any direct descendants, voting control of Blackwood Industries shall remain under the Office of the Family Matriarch until the next lawful heir reaches adulthood.
She looked up.
"Eleanor."
Brooks nodded.
"Exactly."
"If your baby wasn't born..."
Adrian finished quietly.
"My grandmother remained in control."
Claire looked down at her stomach.
"So she wanted..."
Brooks answered for her.
"Your child wasn't simply an inconvenience."
"He—or she—stood between Eleanor and absolute power."
Silence settled over the room.
Claire suddenly felt very small.
She had believed she was fighting for custody.
For survival.
Instead...
Her unborn child had become the center of a war over one of the country's largest family fortunes.
Adrian looked toward the window.
"I spent years wondering why Grandmother pushed me toward Europe."
"Now I know."
Officer Brooks frowned.
"What do you mean?"
"If I stayed overseas..."
"Nathan remained the obvious successor."
"If Nathan died without children..."
"She controlled everything."
"And if I returned..."
Claire completed the thought.
"You would've challenged her."
He nodded.
"She never wanted either of us near that boardroom."
Before anyone could speak again...
A nurse hurried into the room.
"Miss Whitmore?"
"Yes?"
"There's someone downstairs insisting on seeing you."
Officer Brooks immediately stood.
"Name?"
The nurse checked the visitor log.
"Father Gabriel."
Claire blinked.
"I don't know a Father Gabriel."
Minutes later...
A silver-haired priest entered quietly.
He carried an old leather satchel.
His expression was calm but troubled.
"Miss Whitmore."
"I'm sorry to disturb your recovery."
Claire looked confused.
"Have we met?"
"No."
"But I knew Nathan."
Adrian's attention sharpened instantly.
"You knew my cousin?"
The priest nodded.
"He visited my parish three weeks before he died."
The room became completely silent.
Officer Brooks quietly switched on her recorder.
"What did he want?"
Father Gabriel opened his satchel.
"He asked me to keep something safe."
He removed a sealed envelope.
Across the front...
Nathan's handwriting.
To be opened only if anything happens to me.
Claire's hands trembled as she accepted it.
She carefully broke the seal.
Inside...
A handwritten letter.
Claire,
If you're reading this, then I was right to be afraid.
Someone inside my family has been watching us.
If anything happens to me, protect our child.
Don't trust anyone...
except Adrian.
Adrian froze.
His own name stared back at him.
Claire continued reading.
Adrian doesn't know what's happening.
That's exactly why he'll survive long enough to help you.
If my grandmother discovers this letter before you do...
Run.
Claire lowered the paper.
Tears filled her eyes.
"He knew."
She whispered.
"He knew he was in danger."
Father Gabriel nodded sadly.
"He came to confession."
"I cannot repeat what he confessed."
"But I can tell you this..."
"He was terrified."
Officer Brooks looked at the priest carefully.
"Did he mention Eleanor?"
Father Gabriel remained silent for several seconds.
Finally...
"He asked me one question."
"What was it?"
The priest closed his eyes.
"'Can evil wear the face of family?'"
Nobody spoke.
Because everyone in the room already knew the answer.
That afternoon...
Back at Blackwood Manor...
Forensic investigators continued searching the hidden archive.
Detective Ortiz discovered another locked cabinet.
This one required a key.
Thomas Reeves handed over a ring of keys recovered from Eleanor's office.
The third key fit.
Inside...
Were dozens of velvet boxes.
Jewelry?
No.
Baby bracelets.
Hospital identification tags.
Birth certificates.
Photographs.
Each belonging to children connected to the Blackwood family over the last forty years.
Officer Brooks frowned.
"Why would she keep these?"
Ortiz picked up the oldest file.
The name read:
Isabella Grace Blackwood
Date of birth:
Thirty-six years earlier.
Date of death:
Six months later.
Cause listed:
Respiratory illness.
But clipped to the back...
A private pathology report.
Different.
Very different.
Ortiz slowly read the final sentence aloud.
"'Evidence inconsistent with natural illness.'"
The room went completely still.
Another detective whispered,
"My God..."
Officer Brooks looked around the hidden room.
Every file belonged to a child.
Every child had either died...
Or disappeared from the family record.
One by one.
Across decades.
She suddenly understood something horrifying.
Claire's unborn baby wasn't the first child Eleanor had feared.
It was simply...
The latest.
At that exact moment...
Across town...
Eleanor sat alone in the attorney visitation room at the police station.
Her lawyer slid a newspaper across the table.
"They're reopening old investigations."
She barely reacted.
Instead...
She asked only one question.
"Have they found the letter?"
The attorney frowned.
"What letter?"
Eleanor looked away.
Then smiled faintly.
"So..."
"Nathan really did leave one."
The lawyer stared at her.
"You knew?"
"I suspected."
She leaned back calmly.
"Then they're finally looking in the wrong direction."
"What do you mean?"
Eleanor's smile widened just enough to send a chill through the room.
"They still believe this is about inheritance."
She looked toward the rain-covered window.
"It never was."
Late that evening...
Claire couldn't sleep.
Nathan's letter lay on the bedside table.
She read it again.
And again.
Each time, one sentence stood out more than all the others.
Protect our child.
She rested both hands over her stomach.
The baby kicked gently.
As though answering.
Claire smiled through her tears.
"No matter what they wanted..."
she whispered,
"...I'm going to meet you."
Outside her hospital room...
An officer stood guard.
Inside...
Adrian remained asleep in an uncomfortable chair, refusing to leave her alone.
Neither of them noticed the shadow at the end of the hallway.
A woman wearing a nurse's uniform quietly watched Room 412.
She wasn't carrying medication.
She wasn't on the hospital staff.
And hidden beneath her white coat...
May you like
Was a syringe.
