Chapter 8 – The Hospital Confession

Chapter 8 – The Hospital Confession
The maintenance worker never reached the laundry room.
Just as he rounded the corner...
A police officer stepped out of the security office.
"Excuse me."
The man looked up calmly.
"Yes?"
"I haven't seen you before."
"I was called to repair a broken pipe."
The officer frowned.
"We already shut maintenance down during the investigation."
For one brief second...
Neither man moved.
Then the maintenance worker dropped his toolbox.
Instead of wrenches...
Two loaded magazines spilled across the floor.
The officer reached for his radio.
"Gun!"
The hallway exploded into chaos.
The man turned and ran.
By the time officers reached the rear courtyard...
He was gone.
Only the abandoned toolbox remained.
Inside...
They found fake maintenance credentials.
Disposable gloves.
A burner phone.
And a folded photograph.
Maria Alvarez.
Someone hadn't come to repair anything.
Someone had come to silence the maid.
Officer Brooks stared at the photograph.
"They're cleaning up every witness."
Daniel lowered his head.
"They're running out of time."
"No."
Brooks answered quietly.
"They're running out of lies."
At Greenwich Memorial Hospital...
Claire still didn't know how close another witness had come to dying.
She sat quietly in her room, staring at Nathan's letter.
Her fingers traced the final line again.
If anything happens to Maria... you'll know she finally decided to tell the truth.
Nathan had known.
Months before his death.
He had known Maria carried a secret.
Adrian stood beside the window.
"I keep asking myself the same question."
Claire looked up.
"What question?"
"How much did Nathan discover before he died?"
Neither of them wanted to answer it.
A gentle knock interrupted the silence.
Dr. Helen Carter entered with an older man wearing a white lab coat.
"This is Dr. Leonard Hayes."
"Our chief of maternal medicine."
Claire smiled politely.
Dr. Hayes didn't smile back.
His expression was unusually serious.
"Miss Whitmore..."
"I need to discuss your medical records."
Claire's heart immediately began racing.
"Is something wrong with the baby?"
"No."
"The baby is healthy."
She released a breath.
"Then what is it?"
Dr. Hayes looked toward Officer Brooks.
"I think this concerns your investigation."
The room fell silent.
He placed a thick medical file on the table.
"I reviewed every prenatal appointment you've had."
Claire frowned.
"Why?"
"Because something didn't make sense."
He opened the file.
"According to these records..."
"You've changed obstetricians four times."
Claire nodded.
"Yes."
"They kept transferring me."
"No."
Dr. Hayes corrected gently.
"They didn't."
Claire blinked.
"What?"
"Someone altered your referrals."
Officer Brooks stepped forward.
"Can you explain?"
Dr. Hayes nodded.
"Every physician who examined Miss Whitmore recommended the same specialist."
"But before each appointment..."
"The paperwork was changed."
"By whom?"
"We don't know."
"But all four forged authorizations came from the same hospital administrator account."
Claire looked confused.
"Why would anyone do that?"
Dr. Hayes answered quietly.
"Because someone wanted to control who examined your pregnancy."
Adrian felt a knot tighten in his stomach.
"Could they have harmed the baby?"
Dr. Hayes hesitated.
"I honestly don't know."
"But..."
He paused.
"One prescription concerns me."
He removed a photocopy.
"This medication was supposedly prescribed six weeks ago."
Claire studied it.
"I've never taken that."
"You refused it?"
"I never even received it."
Dr. Hayes looked directly at Officer Brooks.
"The medication is contraindicated during pregnancy."
"What does that mean?"
"It significantly increases the risk of miscarriage."
The room became deathly quiet.
Claire slowly lowered the paper.
Someone...
Hadn't merely wanted to frighten her.
Someone had tried to end her pregnancy long before the balcony.
Just then...
A nurse entered hurriedly.
"Doctor..."
"The patient from Room 617 is awake."
Dr. Hayes nodded.
"I'll be right there."
Before leaving...
He turned back toward Claire.
"There's something else."
"What?"
"The physician who supposedly authorized that prescription..."
He paused.
"Died two months ago."
Silence.
"He couldn't have signed it."
As Dr. Hayes left...
Officer Brooks immediately picked up her phone.
"I want every medical record subpoenaed."
"Every administrator."
"Every prescription."
She ended the call.
Then looked at Claire.
"This conspiracy is bigger than we thought."
An hour later...
The hospital chaplain knocked softly on Claire's door.
"I'm sorry to interrupt."
"There's someone asking specifically for Detective Brooks."
"Who?"
"A patient."
"He says..."
The chaplain hesitated.
"...he has information about Eleanor Blackwood."
Officer Brooks followed him down the corridor.
Room 617.
Inside lay an elderly man connected to oxygen.
His skin was pale.
His breathing shallow.
A cardiac monitor beeped steadily beside him.
The nurse whispered,
"He insisted on speaking before surgery."
Officer Brooks approached the bed.
"I'm Detective Brooks."
The man nodded weakly.
"My name..."
He struggled for breath.
"...is Walter Briggs."
The name meant nothing to Brooks.
Until Adrian stepped into the room behind her.
His face changed instantly.
"Walter?"
The old man smiled faintly.
"You remember me."
Claire frowned.
"Who is he?"
Adrian answered quietly.
"He was our family chauffeur."
Walter had worked for the Blackwoods for thirty-five years.
He retired five years earlier after suffering a stroke.
According to everyone...
He had simply disappeared from public life.
Now...
He looked like a man carrying a burden too heavy to keep.
"I don't have much time."
Walter whispered.
"I should've spoken years ago."
Officer Brooks switched on her recorder.
"Tell us everything."
Walter closed his eyes.
"I drove Nathan the night before he died."
Claire leaned forward.
"He told me he was meeting his attorney."
Walter nodded.
"He never got there."
Adrian felt his pulse quicken.
"What happened?"
Walter swallowed painfully.
"Mrs. Blackwood called."
"She ordered me to turn around."
Claire stared at him.
"Nathan agreed?"
"No."
Walter's voice shook.
"They argued."
"He got out of the car."
"And?"
"He said he'd walk."
The room fell silent.
"I watched him disappear down Harbor Road."
Walter continued.
"Five minutes later..."
"I heard tires."
"A crash."
"And then..."
His eyes filled with tears.
"...an explosion."
Officer Brooks spoke carefully.
"Did you see another vehicle?"
Walter nodded.
"A black SUV."
"No license plate."
"It followed Nathan."
Adrian whispered,
"Why didn't you tell the police?"
Walter looked ashamed.
"Because she visited me that night."
"Eleanor."
Claire felt sick.
"What did she say?"
Walter closed his eyes.
"She handed me an envelope."
"Inside was enough money to pay for my wife's cancer treatment."
Tears rolled down his face.
"She said..."
"'Tell the police you drove home.'"
Officer Brooks asked quietly,
"And you did."
Walter nodded.
"My wife lived another eighteen months."
"I've hated myself every day since."
The room remained completely silent.
No one judged him.
No one spoke.
Because every person there understood the terrible choice he had faced.
Walter slowly reached beneath his hospital blanket.
He removed a small flash drive.
"I couldn't live with the lie."
"I copied something."
Officer Brooks accepted it carefully.
"What is this?"
"The dashboard camera."
Adrian's eyes widened.
"The car had a dashcam?"
Walter nodded.
"Mrs. Blackwood thought I'd erased it."
"I didn't."
Claire's breath caught.
"The crash..."
Walter looked directly at her.
"It's all on there."
Before anyone could say another word...
The cardiac monitor suddenly accelerated.
Walter gasped.
Doctors rushed into the room.
"He's crashing!"
"Nurse!"
"Clear the room!"
Officer Brooks slipped the flash drive into her pocket.
She and Adrian backed toward the door.
As they left...
Walter opened his eyes one final time.
He looked at Adrian.
Then at Claire.
With his last strength...
He whispered three words.
"Trust..."
"...your father."
The doors slammed shut.
Doctors fought to save him.
In the hallway...
Claire frowned.
"My father?"
"I don't understand."
Neither did Adrian.
Because Claire had always believed her father died when she was sixteen.
Officer Brooks slowly removed the flash drive from her pocket.
If Walter was telling the truth...
That tiny piece of plastic contained more than a traffic accident.
It might contain a murder.
And the answer to a mystery that had haunted the Blackwood family for decades.
Somewhere across town...
Eleanor Blackwood sat alone in her holding cell.
A guard approached.
"You have a visitor."
Eleanor looked up.
"Who?"
The guard hesitated.
"He refused to give his name."
Moments later...
A tall man in a dark coat entered the room.
Eleanor's calm expression finally cracked.
She whispered only one sentence.
"I thought you were dead."
The man smiled.
May you like
"So did everyone else."
