Chapter 7 – The Maid Who Saw Everything

Chapter 7 – The Maid Who Saw Everything
The woman in the nurse's uniform never reached Room 412.
She had almost made it to Claire's door.
Almost.
A security officer noticed something strange.
Every hospital employee wore an electronic identification badge.
She didn't.
"Excuse me, ma'am."
The woman froze.
"Can I see your ID?"
She smiled politely.
"I left it downstairs."
The officer stepped closer.
"Which department do you work in?"
For a fraction of a second...
Her smile disappeared.
Then she turned and ran.
"Stop!"
The shout echoed through the maternity wing.
Patients looked up in alarm.
Doctors rushed into the hallway.
The woman sprinted toward the emergency stairwell, her white coat fluttering behind her.
Officer Brooks, who had just stepped out of the elevator, reacted instantly.
"Block the exits!"
Two officers raced toward the lobby.
Another headed for the parking garage.
The woman shoved open the stairwell door and disappeared.
Inside Claire's room...
The noise woke Adrian.
He stood immediately despite the pain shooting through his ribs.
Claire sat upright in bed.
"What happened?"
Adrian moved toward the door just as Officer Brooks entered.
"Stay inside."
"What is it?"
"Someone tried to reach your room disguised as a nurse."
Claire instinctively wrapped both arms around her stomach.
"My baby..."
"You're safe."
Brooks assured her.
"But whoever is behind this isn't finished."
An hour later...
Hospital security reviewed surveillance footage.
The disguised woman had entered through a service entrance.
She wore gloves.
A surgical mask.
A cap covering her hair.
Her face never appeared clearly on camera.
She left just as quickly.
But she had abandoned one thing during her escape.
The syringe.
A forensic technician carefully sealed it inside an evidence bag.
"No medication label."
Officer Brooks frowned.
"Can we identify what's inside?"
"We'll rush it to the lab."
"If this was intended for Claire..."
He didn't finish the sentence.
He didn't need to.
Meanwhile...
Back at Blackwood Manor...
The search continued.
Detective Ortiz stood inside the servants' quarters reviewing employment records.
Daniel approached quietly.
"There is someone..."
he began cautiously,
"...who keeps asking if the police are still here."
"Who?"
"Maria Alvarez."
"The housekeeper."
Ortiz looked up.
"Does she know something?"
Daniel hesitated.
"I believe she's terrified."
Maria had worked at Blackwood Manor for twenty-eight years.
She was fifty-six now.
Quiet.
Reliable.
Almost invisible.
She cleaned rooms no one noticed.
Served dinners no one remembered.
Like many longtime servants...
She had learned one rule.
See everything.
Say nothing.
Officer Brooks found Maria folding linens in the laundry room.
The older woman nearly dropped the towels when she saw the detective.
"I..."
"I've already given my statement."
"I know."
Brooks replied gently.
"But I think there's more."
Maria lowered her eyes.
"I don't know anything."
"You've worked here almost three decades."
"Yes."
"You've watched three generations grow up."
"...Yes."
"You know this house better than anyone."
Maria remained silent.
Officer Brooks softened her voice.
"Claire almost died."
"The baby almost died."
"If someone else gets hurt because we're missing one piece of the truth..."
She let the sentence hang unfinished.
Maria's hands began trembling.
Finally...
She whispered,
"Lock the door."
Officer Brooks did.
Maria looked around the empty laundry room before speaking again.
"I've been afraid of Mrs. Blackwood for a very long time."
The detective switched on her recorder.
"Tell me why."
Maria stared at the washing machines spinning quietly behind them.
"I wasn't in the foyer yesterday."
"I was upstairs."
"Changing flowers."
She swallowed hard.
"I heard voices."
Claire.
And Eleanor.
Arguing.
"I wasn't trying to listen."
Maria said quickly.
"I only stopped because Mrs. Blackwood sounded..."
She searched for the word.
"...different."
"Different how?"
"Cold."
Maria remembered every word.
"Take the money."
"No."
"Then you're leaving me no choice."
She heard footsteps.
Then...
A loud crack.
A scream.
Maria rushed toward the balcony.
She reached the hallway just in time to see Claire disappear over the broken railing.
But that wasn't what haunted her.
It was what she saw one second earlier.
"I saw Mrs. Blackwood's hands."
Maria whispered.
"They were still..."
"...pushing."
Officer Brooks felt a chill run through her.
"Are you certain?"
Maria looked directly into her eyes.
"I've replayed it every night."
"There is nothing uncertain about it."
"Why didn't you tell us yesterday?"
Tears filled Maria's eyes.
"Because I've seen this before."
Silence.
Officer Brooks slowly lowered her notebook.
"What do you mean..."
"...you've seen this before?"
Maria closed her eyes.
"It wasn't Claire."
"It was another woman."
"Twenty-two years ago."
The detective leaned forward.
"Who?"
"I never knew her name."
"She came to the house crying."
"She said she was carrying a Blackwood child."
Officer Brooks' heartbeat quickened.
"What happened?"
Maria's voice barely rose above a whisper.
"Mrs. Blackwood paid her to leave."
"The woman refused."
Just like Claire.
"The next morning..."
Maria paused.
"Everyone said she slipped on the garden stairs."
"You don't believe that."
"No."
"I found blood on the stone railing."
"And Mrs. Blackwood ordered me to scrub it away before the police arrived."
Officer Brooks stared at her.
"Did you tell anyone?"
Maria shook her head.
"I had two small sons."
"I needed my job."
"I convinced myself I hadn't really seen anything."
Her voice broke.
"I've regretted that every day since."
At that moment...
Daniel quietly entered the laundry room.
"I thought I'd find you here."
Maria looked ashamed.
"I'm sorry."
"For what?"
"For staying silent."
Daniel gently placed a hand on her shoulder.
"We were all silent."
His own voice trembled.
"I should have protected Master Adrian."
"I should have protected Nathan."
"I should have protected Claire."
"No."
Maria whispered.
"We should have protected every child."
Officer Brooks looked at both of them.
"Every child?"
Daniel nodded slowly.
"There were always children."
He looked toward the ceiling.
"The mansion loved celebrations."
"Birthdays."
"Christmas."
"Family reunions."
"But after every celebration..."
"There was always one child..."
"...who never came back."
The detective felt her stomach tighten.
The hidden room.
The baby bracelets.
The birth records.
Now...
The servants were telling the same story.
Independent.
Unprompted.
The pattern was becoming impossible to ignore.
Suddenly...
A young patrol officer burst into the laundry room.
"Detective!"
"What is it?"
"The lab just called."
"The syringe?"
"Yes."
Officer Brooks waited.
The young officer swallowed.
"It contained potassium chloride."
Silence.
Maria frowned.
"What does that mean?"
The detective answered quietly.
"It can stop a human heart."
Maria covered her mouth.
"My God..."
"It wasn't meant to sedate Claire."
Brooks continued.
"It was meant to kill her."
"And depending on the dose..."
"...her unborn baby too."
Back at the hospital...
Adrian stood beside Claire's bed reading Nathan's letter again.
Something caught his attention this time.
A sentence near the bottom.
Almost hidden.
Written much smaller than the rest.
If anything happens to Maria...
You'll know she finally decided to tell the truth.
Adrian froze.
His face drained of color.
"Officer."
The guard looked up.
"I need Detective Brooks."
"Right now."
At Blackwood Manor...
Maria was still sitting in the laundry room giving her statement.
She had finally chosen to speak after twenty-eight years.
She felt lighter than she had in decades.
For the first time...
She believed the truth might finally matter.
She never noticed the maintenance worker entering through the rear service hallway.
He wore a Blackwood Manor uniform.
He carried a toolbox.
No one questioned him.
After all...
Everyone thought he worked there.
He walked calmly toward the laundry room.
One hand remained inside his jacket pocket.
Wrapped tightly around the handle...
May you like
Of a silenced pistol.
