Chapter 2 – The Man Who Caught Her

Chapter 2 – The Man Who Caught Her
The first sound Claire heard wasn't the sirens.
It was a heartbeat.
Strong.
Steady.
Not hers.
For several seconds, she remained lying on the cold marble floor, her cheek pressed against the chest of the stranger who had broken her fall. Every breath he took reminded her of one impossible truth.
She was alive.
So was her baby.
"Don't move."
The man's voice was calm despite the pain etched across his face.
"You may have internal injuries."
Claire blinked, struggling to focus.
His blue eyes met hers.
Sharp.
Alert.
Filled not with panic...
But concern.
Not for himself.
For her.
"The baby..."
she whispered.
"My baby..."
His gaze dropped to the hand protecting her stomach.
"Can you feel movement?"
A tear rolled down her cheek.
She nodded.
"Yes."
A faint smile crossed his face.
"Good."
Only then did he allow himself to grimace.
His left shoulder hung at an unnatural angle.
Something had broken.
The silence inside the foyer finally shattered.
"Call an ambulance!"
"Someone help them!"
"Get a doctor!"
Guests rushed forward.
Daniel pushed through the crowd first.
"Miss Claire!"
He knelt beside her, his hands trembling.
"Are you hurt?"
Claire barely heard him.
She kept staring at the man beneath her.
"I..."
"I don't even know your name."
He gave a tired smile.
"Adrian."
Daniel's eyes widened.
"Master Adrian..."
"You've come home."
Several guests gasped.
Adrian Blackwood.
The eldest son of the Blackwood family.
The heir who had spent the past seven years building the company's European division in London.
The man who rarely returned home.
The man many believed would one day control the entire Blackwood empire.
He had arrived only minutes earlier.
And already...
Everything had changed.
Above them...
Eleanor gripped the broken balcony railing so tightly her knuckles turned white.
She looked down at Adrian.
Not with relief.
Not with gratitude.
With fear.
Real fear.
Because Adrian wasn't supposed to be here.
His flight had been scheduled to arrive after midnight.
Someone had changed the reservation.
Someone she hadn't expected.
"Move back."
A paramedic's voice cut through the crowd as emergency responders entered the mansion.
Within seconds they surrounded Claire and Adrian.
One paramedic examined Claire.
Another stabilized Adrian's shoulder.
"It looks dislocated."
the medic said.
Adrian barely acknowledged him.
He kept watching Claire.
"Check the baby first."
The paramedic smiled faintly.
"We're checking both of you."
Meanwhile...
Two police officers entered the foyer.
Officer Megan Brooks surveyed the broken railing.
The scattered marble dust.
The terrified guests.
Then she looked up.
"Who called 911?"
"I did."
Lucas stepped forward.
His voice shook.
"I saw everything."
Eleanor descended the staircase with surprising composure.
"It was an accident."
Officer Brooks turned toward her.
"You witnessed the fall?"
"I was speaking with Claire."
"She lost her balance."
Lucas interrupted immediately.
"No."
Everyone looked at the sixteen-year-old footman.
His face had gone pale.
"I saw Mrs. Blackwood shove her."
The room erupted into whispers.
Eleanor's expression remained calm.
"He's mistaken."
Lucas shook his head.
"I'm not."
"You pushed her."
Officer Brooks raised a hand.
"Enough."
She looked toward Adrian.
"Sir..."
"You were the one who caught her?"
He nodded.
"I didn't see the push."
"I only saw her falling."
The officer wrote something in her notebook.
"Understood."
Claire was carefully placed onto a stretcher.
Before the paramedics wheeled her away...
She reached for Adrian's hand.
"Thank you."
He squeezed her fingers gently.
"You don't owe me thanks."
"You saved two lives."
His expression softened.
"I only did what anyone should have done."
Claire looked around the silent foyer.
Not everyone had moved.
Not everyone would have.
She knew that.
So did he.
As the ambulance doors closed...
Adrian finally allowed himself to breathe.
The adrenaline faded.
Pain rushed in.
His shoulder throbbed.
His ribs burned.
The paramedic examined him again.
"We need to take you too."
"I'm fine."
"No."
"You really aren't."
The ride to Greenwich Memorial Hospital passed in silence.
Claire lay in one ambulance.
Adrian in another.
Neither knew the other's story.
Yet somehow...
Their lives had become connected forever.
An hour later...
The emergency department buzzed with activity.
Doctors rushed Claire into the maternity unit.
Ultrasounds.
Blood tests.
Heart monitors.
Minutes felt like hours.
Finally...
Dr. Helen Carter smiled.
"The baby is alive."
Claire burst into tears.
"And you?"
"I have bruising."
"A mild concussion."
"But no internal bleeding."
Claire closed her eyes.
For the first time since falling...
She truly believed she might survive.
Across the hallway...
Another doctor examined Adrian.
"Broken collarbone."
"Two cracked ribs."
"Severe bruising."
"You shouldn't have caught her."
Adrian smiled weakly.
"I know."
"You could have died."
"I know."
"Would you do it again?"
Without hesitation...
"Yes."
The doctor laughed softly.
"I thought you'd say that."
Later that evening...
Adrian sat alone with his arm in a sling.
A nurse entered carrying discharge papers.
"Someone wants to see you."
Claire appeared in the doorway.
She looked exhausted.
But she was standing.
"I'm sorry."
she said quietly.
"You got hurt because of me."
Adrian shook his head.
"No."
"I got hurt because someone pushed you."
There was a difference.
A very important one.
Claire sat across from him.
For several moments...
Neither spoke.
Finally she asked,
"Why did you run?"
He looked genuinely confused.
"What do you mean?"
"You didn't know me."
"You didn't hesitate."
"You just..."
"...ran."
Adrian stared out the hospital window.
"When I was twelve..."
he began softly,
"I had a younger sister."
Claire remained silent.
"Emily."
"She was six."
"She drowned."
Claire's breath caught.
"I couldn't reach her."
His voice remained calm.
Too calm.
"I've spent twenty-two years wondering what would have happened if I'd been faster."
He looked back at Claire.
"This time..."
"I was."
Claire felt tears welling again.
"I'm so sorry."
He smiled sadly.
"So am I."
A gentle knock interrupted them.
Officer Brooks entered holding a file.
"I'm sorry to disturb you."
"We've completed the initial interviews."
She looked directly at Claire.
"Miss Whitmore..."
"I need to ask you a few questions."
Claire nodded.
"Of course."
"Did Eleanor Blackwood threaten you before tonight?"
Claire hesitated.
Then answered honestly.
"Yes."
"How many times?"
"For almost a year."
"What kind of threats?"
Claire looked down at her stomach.
"She wanted me to lose the baby."
The room fell silent.
Officer Brooks slowly wrote down every word.
Then she turned toward Adrian.
"Mr. Blackwood..."
"I have another question."
He nodded.
"Did your mother know Miss Whitmore was pregnant?"
Adrian frowned.
"My mother died eleven years ago."
Officer Brooks blinked.
"I'm sorry."
"I meant Mrs. Eleanor Blackwood."
Adrian's expression darkened.
"My grandmother."
"Yes."
"She knew."
The officer closed her notebook.
"Then this case just became far more serious."
Back at Blackwood Manor...
The gala had ended abruptly.
Guests whispered as they left.
Servants quietly cleaned broken glass from the marble floor.
The shattered balcony railing remained untouched.
A crime scene.
Eleanor sat alone in her private sitting room.
For the first time in years...
Her hands wouldn't stop shaking.
She poured herself a glass of whiskey.
Then another.
Neither helped.
A knock came at the door.
"Come in."
Nathan entered.
Claire's former fiancé.
Eleanor's only grandson besides Adrian.
His face was pale.
"Grandmother..."
"Tell me it isn't true."
She looked at him steadily.
"What have they told you?"
"That you pushed Claire."
Silence.
Then...
Very quietly...
She answered,
"I did what had to be done."
Nathan staggered backward as though struck.
"What?"
"That child would destroy this family."
"No."
His voice cracked.
"You've already done that."
He turned and walked out without another word.
The door closed softly behind him.
Eleanor remained alone.
For the first time...
She realized she hadn't just lost control of Claire.
She might have lost her family as well.
And down the hospital corridor, unseen by anyone...
A man in an expensive suit stood watching Claire's room through the glass.
He made one brief phone call.
"I've found her."
A pause.
Then he added,
"The baby survived."
He ended the call and disappeared before anyone noticed he had ever been there.
Someone else had been searching for Claire.
May you like
And they weren't finished yet.
