Chapter 4

The Woman Who Wanted the Empire

Power does strange things to people.

Some people use it to protect.

Some use it to build.

And some spend their entire lives chasing it because they believe owning everything will finally make them feel important.

Vanessa Cole was that kind of person.

She did not want love.

She wanted a throne.

And for years...

She had been preparing herself to sit on it.

Before Vanessa became the woman standing beneath the Moretti mansion's crystal chandeliers, she was nobody.

At least...

That was what the world believed.

She was not born into wealth.

She was not raised among politicians.

She did not inherit a famous name.

She built her entire identity carefully.

Beautiful.

Elegant.

Intelligent.

Perfect.

A woman who could enter any room and make people believe she belonged there.

But behind that perfect image was something much darker.

A hunger.

A need to prove that she was better than the people who once looked down on her.

Vanessa grew up watching powerful families from the outside.

The Morettis.

The Carters.

The Whitmores.

Families whose names opened doors before they even arrived.

She hated them.

Not because they had money.

Because they had something she never had.

Security.

Nobody questioned whether they belonged.

Nobody asked them where they came from.

Nobody treated them as temporary.

When Vanessa first met Alessandro Moretti, she understood immediately.

He was different from other wealthy men.

Most powerful men wanted admiration.

Alessandro wanted control.

He didn't chase attention.

Attention chased him.

That made him dangerous.

And valuable.

She spent months studying him.

His habits.

His weaknesses.

His fears.

And she found the one thing he secretly wanted.

A family.

The newspapers always focused on Alessandro's success.

The company.

The billions.

The influence.

But Vanessa noticed what others missed.

Every time he saw fathers with their children...

Something changed in his eyes.

Every year on the anniversary of his father's death...

He became quieter.

He wasn't searching for more power.

He was searching for something he had lost.

A home.

That was when Vanessa created her plan.

A child.

Not a real one.

A symbol.

The perfect chain.

She knew exactly what Alessandro would do.

He would marry her.

He would protect her.

He would announce an heir.

And once she became Mrs. Moretti...

The empire would belong to her.

But there was one thing she never expected.

Emma.

Inside her private apartment, Vanessa stared at the news reports.

Every screen showed the same image.

A small child standing in the Moretti mansion.

The maid's daughter.

The girl who destroyed everything.

Vanessa threw a glass against the wall.

"That little girl."

Her voice shook.

"She ruined everything."

Luca stood behind her.

Silent.

Watching.

Unlike Vanessa, Luca did not lose control easily.

That was why she hated him.

He was the only person who made her feel like she wasn't the smartest person in the room.

"You underestimated her."

Vanessa turned.

"I underestimated a child?"

"No."

Luca replied.

"You underestimated what she represents."

Vanessa frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Luca walked toward the window.

"Emma is proof."

"Proof of what?"

"That everything I was denied still exists."

Vanessa stared.

She still struggled to understand why Luca cared so much about a child.

Until he explained.

"The Moretti family erased me."

Luca's voice became colder.

"They told the world I was dead."

"They built Alessandro into the perfect heir."

"They turned me into a mistake."

He looked back at her.

"But blood remembers."

Vanessa understood.

Slowly.

Emma was not just a child.

She was Luca's connection to the family.

A claim.

A weapon.

"Then why don't you just take her?"

Luca smiled.

"Because Alessandro is protecting her now."

"And?"

"And Alessandro Moretti is far more dangerous when he has something to lose."

Vanessa remembered the man in the ballroom.

The calm expression.

The controlled anger.

She understood.

For years, Alessandro had been untouchable because nothing could reach him.

Now...

He had Emma.

"We need another way."

Vanessa said.

Luca nodded.

"We do."

Meanwhile, inside the Moretti mansion...

Alessandro's world was changing.

For the first time, he canceled meetings.

Not because of business.

Because Emma had a fever.

The same man who controlled companies worth billions was sitting beside a child's bed, reading a storybook.

It was a sight nobody would believe.

Emma looked up.

"Mr. Alessandro?"

"Yes?"

"Are you my uncle?"

The question made him pause.

Children had a way of asking the questions adults avoided.

"Who told you that?"

She shrugged.

"The lady downstairs."

"What lady?"

"The one who was crying."

Alessandro immediately became alert.

"What did she look like?"

Emma thought.

"Pretty."

"Blonde hair?"

Emma nodded.

"Vanessa."

Alessandro's expression darkened.

Vanessa had been inside the mansion before leaving.

She had been close enough to Emma.

Close enough to speak to her.

Close enough to know things.

He called security immediately.

"Review all camera footage from the last forty-eight hours."

Ten minutes later, the head of security entered.

"Sir..."

"What?"

"There is something unusual."

Alessandro looked up.

"Show me."

The footage showed Vanessa entering the east wing.

But she wasn't alone.

A man appeared briefly in the background.

His face was hidden.

But Alessandro recognized the way he walked.

The posture.

The confidence.

The scar visible for half a second.

Luca.

The man he thought was dead.

The brother who had returned.

The father of the little girl sleeping upstairs.

That night, Alessandro made a decision.

He would stop running from the past.

He would face it.

But before he could act...

Vanessa made her own move.

The next morning, every major news channel received an anonymous package.

Inside:

Photos of Clara.

Photos of Emma.

And a document claiming:

"Moretti heir secretly fathered a child with a servant."

The scandal exploded.

Again.

But this time...

The target wasn't Vanessa.

It was Clara.

The world that had celebrated Vanessa now attacked the woman who had told the truth.

Online comments appeared instantly.

"The maid trapped the Moretti family."

"She planned this from the beginning."

"The child is a weapon."

Clara read the headlines silently.

Then looked at Emma.

The fear she had carried for three years returned.

Because she finally understood Vanessa's plan.

Vanessa did not need to prove she was innocent.

She only needed to make everyone doubt Clara.

That evening, Alessandro found Clara sitting alone.

"You should have told me sooner."

She looked at him.

"I know."

"Why didn't you trust me?"

Her eyes filled with tears.

"Because every person who knew the truth before me ended up losing everything."

Alessandro became quiet.

Because he understood.

Clara wasn't protecting a secret.

She was protecting a child.

Then his phone rang.

A message.

One sentence.

From an unknown number.

Bring me my daughter, or you will learn what the Morettis are capable of.

Alessandro stared at the screen.

Then slowly looked toward Emma's room.

His expression hardened.

The game had changed.

This was no longer about Vanessa.

No longer about the empire.

No longer about inheritance.

Someone was coming for Emma.

May you like

And Alessandro Moretti was about to show the world why his enemies feared him.
