Chapter 5

Chapter 5
The Forgotten Heir
Every family has a story.
The version they tell the world.
The version written in expensive books.
The version displayed in portraits hanging on walls.
But powerful families have another story.
The one they bury.
The one they erase.
The one they hope nobody ever discovers.
For the Moretti family...
That story had a name.
Luca Moretti.
The forgotten heir.
The morning after the threat arrived, Alessandro Moretti changed.
Everyone in the mansion noticed.
The employees.
The security team.
Even the people who had worked for him for years.
Before, Alessandro had been controlled.
Cold.
Impossible to read.
But now...
There was something different.
Fear.
Not for himself.
For Emma.
He increased security around the mansion.
Two guards outside the main entrance.
Two near the east wing.
Cameras checked every hour.
Background checks were repeated on every employee.
Nobody entered without approval.
Nobody left without being questioned.
Some people thought it was excessive.
They didn't understand.
Alessandro had spent his entire life losing people.
His father.
His childhood.
His family.
He refused to lose Emma.
But while Alessandro prepared for a possible attack...
The person behind the attack was watching.
Across the city, inside a private penthouse overlooking Manhattan, Luca Moretti stared at old photographs.
A younger version of himself.
His father.
Alessandro.
The family that had erased him.
The family that had stolen his future.
"Twenty years."
His voice was calm.
"Twenty years, and they still speak his name."
Vanessa sat across from him.
She was no longer the confident woman from the ballroom.
The perfect image had cracked.
Without cameras.
Without supporters.
Without Alessandro's protection.
She looked smaller.
"We need to be careful."
Luca glanced at her.
"You sound afraid."
"I know what Alessandro is capable of."
A faint smile appeared on Luca's face.
"So do I."
That was the difference between them.
Vanessa feared Alessandro.
Luca hated him.
And hatred was far more dangerous.
"You still haven't told me everything."
Vanessa crossed her arms.
"About what?"
"Emma."
Her expression changed.
"You knew about her before the party."
Luca said nothing.
That silence answered everything.
Vanessa stood.
"You knew."
"I suspected."
"You used me."
"No."
Luca looked at her.
"I used your ambition."
The words hurt because they were true.
Vanessa had believed she was controlling the situation.
She thought she was using Luca's knowledge to destroy Alessandro.
But she had never realized something important.
Luca had been planning this long before she entered the picture.
Years ago...
Before Alessandro became the head of Moretti Holdings...
Before the world knew his name...
There were two brothers.
Two sons of Matteo Moretti.
The older son:
Luca.
The younger son:
Alessandro.
Luca was brilliant.
Everyone knew it.
He understood numbers before he was old enough to understand people.
He could read contracts.
Predict markets.
Manipulate negotiations.
His father once said:
"Luca was born to lead."
But there was one problem.
Luca wanted power more than responsibility.
As they grew older, Alessandro became the opposite.
He cared about people.
Employees.
Family.
The consequences of his choices.
Their father saw something in Alessandro that Luca never understood.
Leadership was not about controlling people.
It was about protecting them.
That was when the jealousy began.
Slowly.
Quietly.
Dangerously.
When Matteo Moretti prepared to name his successor, everyone expected Luca.
Including Luca himself.
But the announcement shocked the family.
The next leader of Moretti Holdings would be Alessandro.
Luca never forgave him.
The night Matteo died, everything changed.
The official story:
A random attacker.
A tragic assassination.
A son forced to inherit an empire too soon.
But the truth...
Was hidden.
Luca had been there.
Watching.
Waiting.
And Clara had seen him.
Back at the Moretti mansion, Alessandro sat in his father's old study.
The same room where he had found the hidden documents.
The same room where he discovered his family had lied.
Clara stood beside him.
"I should have told you years ago."
Alessandro looked at the old family portrait.
"Why didn't you?"
"Because your mother believed Luca would come back."
"She knew?"
Clara nodded.
"She knew he was alive."
Alessandro clenched his hand.
"My entire life..."
His voice became quiet.
"My entire life, everyone was protecting me from the truth."
Clara looked at him.
"Sometimes people hide things because they want to hurt you."
A pause.
"Sometimes they hide things because they love you."
Alessandro looked toward Emma's room.
"And what about you?"
"What?"
"Why did you stay?"
Clara didn't answer immediately.
Because the real answer was complicated.
She stayed because of a promise.
Because of guilt.
Because of Emma.
And because somewhere deep inside...
She had always hoped Alessandro would become the man his father believed he could be.
Before she could respond, security rushed into the room.
"Sir."
Alessandro turned.
"What happened?"
"We found something."
They followed him to the security office.
A file appeared on the screen.
A hidden camera from the east wing.
Recorded three years earlier.
The footage showed Clara leaving the mansion late at night.
Holding a newborn baby.
Emma.
Behind her...
A man stood in the shadows.
Luca.
Alessandro stared.
The video continued.
Luca approached Clara.
They argued.
Then he handed her something.
A small envelope.
"What is that?"
Alessandro whispered.
Clara's face went pale.
"I thought it was destroyed."
"What?"
She looked at the screen.
"The last letter."
"From who?"
She hesitated.
Then said:
"Your father."
The room froze.
The letter was recovered from the security archive.
Old.
Damaged.
But readable.
Inside was a message written by Matteo Moretti.
"To my son Alessandro,
If you are reading this, then Luca has returned.
I need you to understand something.
Your brother is not your enemy because he wants the empire.
He is your enemy because he believes the empire was stolen from him.
And the most dangerous person in this world is someone who believes they have nothing left to lose."
Alessandro finished reading.
His face was expressionless.
But Clara knew him.
She knew what that silence meant.
He had finally accepted the truth.
Luca was not returning to reclaim his place.
He was returning to destroy the person who took it.
Then another line at the bottom caught Alessandro's attention.
A line Matteo had added later.
A line that changed everything.
"And there is one more truth you must know.
Emma is not only Luca's daughter.
She carries the final proof of who should inherit Moretti."
Alessandro looked up.
"What does that mean?"
Nobody answered.
Because at that exact moment...
The mansion lights went out.
Every screen turned black.
The security alarms failed.
And somewhere inside the darkness...
A door opened.
A small voice cried out.
"Mama?"
Alessandro ran.
Faster than anyone had ever seen him move.
Emma's room was empty.
The window was open.
A small stuffed rabbit lay on the floor.
And on the bed...
A note.
Three words.
Written by hand.
COME FIND ME.
Alessandro stared at the message.
The forgotten heir had returned.
And he had taken the one person who connected the entire Moretti family together.
May you like
Emma.
